We walked in and we went straight to the dogs to look at them, me and my boyfriend were looking to purchase a golden retriever and we saw one, then we asked to play with the dog and to see if it was a right fit. The woman immediately said no and that the dogs are reserved for people who want to buy them, It felt ageist and homophobic, her tone was extremely aggressive aswell she practically yelled at us. Yet after we explained we were looking to make a purchase she ignored and went straight to the back at 3:30pm 4/27/2026 I feel very bad for the people and dogs that are refused to meet because the employees refuse to let a bond happen, Im sure hundreds of people didn't get to meet their dream dog because of the horrible employees that work here. I recently called to check in on a puppy I saw in their instagram page. When I called, a lady picked up. She seemed to be in a hurry or something. I didn't feel too much openness with her to ask her questions, so we ended the call even though I wanted to ask more. Don't know if it was a busy shift but I feel customer service lacked in that talk with her. I come here and read that their staff can be a bit rude and after speaking with the lady I wouldn't be surprised. Rudeness, impatience and lack of high quality customer service will eventually run you out of business. Please be kinder, more patient and be a safe space with the customers. It builds trust and they will want to do business with you. If the ladies energy and tone, would have been more open, kinder and maybe encouraging that I do ask as many questions as needed, it would have prompted me to actually go visit them. So, I'll be the first to say that I never thought I'd be in the position to write a review for a pet store. I believe in rescue and prior to some eye opening experiences I was 100% rescue only. But, like anything else- extremes are not good, not all rescues are regulated, and everyone's situation is different. It's a lengthy review, but please read it to fully understand my perspective. To start with, this is a business, not a rescue, not a breeder. This business sells puppies that they purchase from USDA licensed breeders. The USDA is the same section of government that regulates livestock, farms, etc. You can look up the name of the kennel that the puppies in the store are from and view inspection reports on the USDA website. Infractions can be major or minor. In the worst case scenarios these involve lack of medical care, rusty cages, etc... everything negative about "puppy mills." The Pet Shoppe states that their breeders do not have violations in the last few years. I can say that for my dog this was the case when I searched the kennel name. My point here is be an educated consumer. My experience with the Pet Shoppe was good. We were given ample time to interact with our puppy as a family in a larger space. We did not impulsively choose the first cute puppy. The NJ laws were clearly explained. We were given a cell number to contact. The puppy was on a schedule with feeding and we were given the appropriate food and directions and information on common illnesses. She did come with giardiasis which is NOT uncommon- our personal vet said so herself and it did not merit an "unfit for sale" certificate. I also liked the fact that the dogs are in open spaces (sort of cubicles) with toys, another pup to play with if space allows, a litter box, and time out of the space to run around. If you choose to rescue, please rescue from a shelter or rescue working with local dogs. Be aware that rescues are supposed to follow USDA regulations as well especially when traveling between states. Not all rescues are created equal. Lastly - be aware that there is a chance that your pup will not have had the specific extensive socialization that a small scale breeder may provide especially with regard to sounds, textures, flooring, smells, etc. This will take a little extra work on your part but is not inconceivable by any means. My pup seems to have a phobia of confined spaces and is more hesitant around new things than may be expected of a 12 week old. She also has a lower tolerance for frustration than may be expected (probably did not have extensive time with her mother to set boundaries etc). That being said, her health and overall temperament is very good. For us, the pros of being able to go in person as a family and look at a variety of puppies to know what was right outweighed the cons, even knowing that the pups were from larger kennels. As I said, the staff was friendly, not pushy, and set us up with all that we needed to start up with success. They also provided follow up calls. And we now have a sweet puppy who loves our kids and with some behavior modification I'm confident will become a well adjusted dog. I visited several places in the area. If you're going to go somewhere in town, I recommend this place. I'm providing 4 instead of 5 stars because there was one form that they did not review with me, which was waived of vet exam if a pup had an initial exam prior to 3 days of purchase. Although they do have a vet that gives free exams, we would have been responsible for the cost of medications administered. Not "deal breaking" by any means but keep a lookout for the form. I also feel that the prices are quite high, and are more than the initial investment you'd make at a private breeder. read more

My husband and I had been searching for a Biewer Terrier for some time and came across one at The Pet Shoppe in Middletown in December of 2022. I FaceTimed my husband from the store and we agreed that I was going to bring her home and we named her Elvira. Well, Elvira is a spirited puppy with three older sisters, all different breeds. She fit right in as the baby. We noticed around July 2023 that she was favoring her right hind leg. Through pathology with the vet we determined that she had a congenital issue called Leggs-Calves-Perthes syndrome and she had to have a femoral head ostectomy. I contacted Dana, the owner of The Pet Shoppe to explain the situation. Dana, immediately offered to help financially. Please know that she was not legally obligated to do so. The "Lemon Law" for pets expires once they hit 6 months of age and I believe only applies to pets purchased at a licensed pet store. Regardless, Dana, stepped up, she explained that she stands by her dogs and that she would assist us with the medical bills, which were adding up. Needless to say Elvira made a full recovery and uses her leg superbly now. I can't recommend Dana and The Pet Shoppe enough. They are licensed and regulated by the State of New Jersey, other "stores" in the area are actually kennels and are not regulated by the State nor do you have the same coverage as a consumer. That all said, buy from a reputable licensed pet store like The Pet Shoppe, NOT an unregulated kennel. read more

The other day, I was feeling under the weather secondary to having surgery several weeks ago. I stopped into the Pet Shoppe, Route 35 in Middletown, NJ just to see the puppies and to provide myself with some animal psychological therapy. We were greeted by Tara, who encouraged us to spend time with a puppy that stole my heart. Tara was extremely patient with our questions, and very knowledgeable in regards to puppy responsibility. She did not rush us, she was not pushy about making a sale that day. We left without the puppy. I went home to make a pro and con list of owning a dog. The following day, I called Dana the owner of the Pet Shoppe, to ask additional questions and request information regarding the cost of the puppy. My daughter had been asking for a puppy for months. I researched on where to purchase a puppy and read to steer clear of pet shops. One night my husband asked the kids and I if we wanted to take a ride to a few local shops to see puppies and what breeds we gravitated to. We came to the Pet Shoppe first. I was very hesitant bc of all the terrible reviews, but we had no intention in purchasing a puppy that day. We were greeted by Tracey, very nice lady. Told us to not touch the puppies, to avoid passing on any germs. I thought that was great. Immediately, I fell in love with a little Havanese male puppy. The other puppies were cute, but not like him. I liked how they all had a blanket to snuggle on and were well kept. Tracey told us we could hold the pup in a separate space, after we sanitized our hands. Also liked that. We fell in love with the little guy even more. We ended up leaving and visiting another local pet shop. It was crowded, had great reviews, but the puppies all looked so sad and were all standing on crates, with no floors/blankets. Didn't feel a connection with any. The next day we decided that we wanted the Havanese. Couldn't stop thinking about him. We called the Pet Shoppe and spoke with Dana. She explained a $500 deposit would hold the puppy and that we could pay by cash, credit, or financing. We put down a deposit and she congratulated us, telling us we could visit him anytime, until pick up. A few of the puppies had colds, so she wanted to get him checked and cleared by the vet before we took him home. Upon pickup, our Bentley boy was all cleared and ready to take home. She recommended getting a bag of his current food and slowly weaning him onto a different puppy food of our choice. Seamless transaction. The vet they recommended has also been excellent. This place is a scam. I went here with my children to pick out a dog and found one that I like. They told me I could not bring it home that day because they needed a veterinarian to see it the next day. In order to hold it until the next day, I had to put down $100. The next day, I went out and bought all of the supplies for the dog. I called the next day to see if the veterinarian had been in yet. They returned my call to tell me that the veterinarian had come and they had to hold the dog for another week because it had a cough. In order for them to keep the dog for me, I would have to put down another $400. I asked if it wouldn't be better for the dog to come home where it wouldn't be around other dogs who could catch whatever it had/catch more from new puppies. So now, on top of the original $2500.00 I was paying, I was now going to have to give them another $500.00. I am certainly not a veterinarian, but I am an BSN, RN, CMSRN and I personally feel this is a scam. Recently, we lost our beloved Corgi, and we were looking to add a new member to our family. We first stopped at a puppy store down the street, after being told they were receiving a 'big shipment' of beagle pups. When we got there, not only were we disappointed by the fact that there were no beagles, but also that the conditions these puppies were living were less than acceptable. We knew of the Pet Shoppe down the street and decided to give them a try. When we entered the store, it was so clean. The puppies were not kept in cages, but in very room 'pens'. We looked over the puppies and, even though, we were looking for a beagle, we found a Red Labrador who totally won over our hearts. She was lively, and very well kept. Our Rhoda is such a good day, that she was housebroken within one day. We are very happy with our puppy, and now our house is a home again. Thank you for everything, Pet Shoppe! read more
