Look--I rarely eat at the same restaurant twice. Life's too short. But whether it's the proximity to the Sandy dollar theater and the temptation to make it a cheap eats/cheap entertainment night, or whether there's something that gets into my system, I do not know. But what I do know is that I'm here every few months, usually by myself, usually wolfing down a sandwich, and indulging in what has become my own dirty, guilty pleasure. Even if fancy hired a bunch of scientists, developed a space program, and left Earth to go on a manned mission to Mars, it would still not be as far away from you as it is when you go to The Philadelphian. This place still has that smell of not being very sanitary. Smoke coming off of the fryer, the grill black as coal with unused old portions of food off to the side. It has been years since I have been here. Way back in the day I used to go to this place when it was off of 9400 South. Anyhow, the food isn't very good, the meat looks to be precooked, very little cheese and the thick stale bread was disgusting. Not really sure on this one. I give em a 3 cuz it's better and cheaper than their moochy competitor. Couple of things... The Cheesesteak (Peppersteak according to the menu) was really good. Not great, and not as full of beef as others suggest (maybe they were running low, maybe they didn't like my name, i dunno, it just wasn't all that much meat) the cheese was provolone, which is good, but not the cheese for a proper cheesesteak The onion rings - what's up with these? They were DOUGHY! Not crumb/panko, or batter/tempura, but DOUGH... or at least it seemed like dough. Not really my thing. We shared an order and each only had a couple, then pushed them aside for the chips. The chips...yum. Not as good as the old english chips the Piccadilly and DQ used to serve, but they were way better than any fries anywhere else in town (except of course for McDonalds, but it's really not fair to compare anyone's fries to McDonald's now is it) Atmosphere? meh.. who cares, it's a cheesesteak place for chrissake! As far as I can tell, it seems this place has given up on a few fundamental aspects of the restaurant, and Philly steak experience. But, let's go over the positives, first. 1. Good bread 2. Efficient ordering and food delivery 3. Decent cheese and onions. 4. Plenty of napkins at the table 5. Plenty of fry sauce and condiments 6. Low prices/large portions, for those who love a good value I hate this part, but here are the negatives. 1. Dry/tough flavorless meat. I had to commit a cardinal sin by dousing the Philly with fry sauce, just to aid my salivary glands in their role of breaking down food. If I had had the presence of mind to bring it up with the owner, I'm sure this review would have ended differently. But I didn't, and that's my bad. So take this review with a grain of salt. Pun intended. 2. Flavorless breaded/fried English-style potatoes. I dipped them in fry sauce, but even that didn't do much for the flavor, for me. 3. Greasy ambience 4. Stale air When you've had Fat Boy Phillies, and to a certain extent, Moochie's, I wouldn't even consider this place, after my experience, unless they made some fundamental changes to the quality and flavor of the meat, and injected some type of flavor into the breading of the English-style potatoes. I love this place. Its just like eating in Philly. Is it clean? No. It's the staff fast? No. Are the sandwiches huge and tasty? Yes. This is one of the better hole in the wall sandwich places in the area. To be fair, hole in the wall might be generous. Do not take a first date here. Do not bring your in-laws. Do not bring your fancy wife unless you put a blind fold on her. There are only two sandwiches to order, the Philadelphian or the peppersteak. Get a small fry to go with it. It will be enough to share for at least 3. If you want fancy, go somewhere else. If you want a great cheese steak, get on a plane to Philly, get punched in the face then get on the return flight back home and come here. You won't be disappointed. Go RSL! One of the best the food is always fast and hot and made to order, fries are a generous portion not always consistent but that is do to where the potatoes are delivered from as they are darn fresh and very in "species" is that the right word. First off let me say the portions are huge so if you like this kind of food this should be a good spot. The food is somewhat bland I ordered the Philadelphian paid my 10 bucks and got plenty of food for that price. My caution is the onion rings were inedible really just a bunch of raw dough around a slice of onion. I asked if they could re fry them so they are crispy and he said that's the way they come. I had to throw the entire order of rings in the trash so long 4 bucks bye bye! This is for sure a dive spot it doesn't look like it has been cleaned in a decade but that is also the charm of that is your thing. For the price I think they could do better for sure. read more

I've driven by this place numerous times, but never around lunch time when I wasn't in a hurry, so never had a chance to check it out. From the outside, real talk, it looks a bit grimy and I had some doubts when I opened the door. Instead, I found what appears to be a nifty little neighborhood sandwich joint and one of the friendliest places I've been. It has an interesting feel to it that's a little hard to describe, but it's a cool place to grab a sandwich and chill out and where everyone seems to know you, whether you've met or not. It's perhaps, in a way, like the Cheers bar, if that was a sandwich place. I went with the signature sandwich, which is cleverly named to echo, but not directly approximate, the Philly cheesesteak. There are numerous differences, naturally, starting with the bun and going on to the ingredients, but as a cheese steak sandwich, I had no complaints. They are wise, I think, not to directly claim the Philly, but even the slight appeal to the idea made me miss Moochie's, whom I'm convinced has spoiled me forever. This could definitely do with that jalapeno sauce, though. The bun is very soft and a bit overly bready for me, but you wind up getting a ton of food. The small English chips was about twice what I could manage, though it was also quite good. The 6" sandwich I got was probably more than enough by itself, if I'm being honest. The insides of that were excellent, but the bread... Drink selection is a total wash. Staff is uniformly pleasant and friendly, which was also nice to see. I will probably stop in there again, at some point, to drift through some of the other sandwich selections, but I really wish they had a better selection of fountain drinks. Pressed to the glass there was a row of "golden girls" all waiting on 1 order. They were butted up tightly with a party that was eating their food. Not much for a waiting area. A large party with several kids was at the register. Took them about 5 mins to place their order, with screaming, running, clawing children. The next lady ordered. Now it's my turn. I over hear him tell her it is a 25 min wait for food. I order a French dip with mushrooms, a Philly cheesesteak, and 2 orders of English chips. I got the 12inch sandwiches which was a mistake. It was soooo much food. I was already dreading a 25 min wait... Only it happened to be 35 mins. 35 mins in which I was slapped by a bad kid from the big party ordering when I got there. Pressed up against the window. The air in there was thick with grease and they should really get rid of the carpet in there. We took the short drive home. I opened the sandwiches and it didn't appear to have any difference between the two sandwiches, and we were shorted a English chips which I didn't really mind because it was a lot of food other than the fact I paid for 2.... The staff is super friendly, always greeted upon entering and leaving! Prices are super reasonable and the food is great! My one complaint about the sandwich, although I wasn't really thinking about it while eating that philly cheese steak goodness, was that I wish the ingredients were a little better quality. This is a small mom and pop place in a strip mall. The staff was very friendly, and the prices were very good. This is a good place to sit down on a Sunday to watch the game and grab a bite. The adjectives that describe the cheesesteak sandwiches are fresh, juicy, cheesy, and very salty. The bread for some reason doesn't fit the rest of the sandwich but its worth a try, although it doesn't taste very authentic. I also tried the fried mushrooms. I am not sure what went wrong but it tasted like a very oversalted and extremely tough doughnut hole. If you made beef jerky out of dough, this likely would be it. The fryer was probably too hot as it was incredibly brown on the outside, and overly doughy on the inside. The staff here is horrendous. They are rude and unsanitary. They do not ever answer the phone, the one time they did answer me the employee answered with "Hello, FBI" and then hung up. I went in a few minutes later in person to confirm they were open, they were. I called the number once more to confirm it was correct while waiting for my food. It rang and when I hung up a moment later an employee began openly mocking the caller (me) that they "finally got the hint". The really stupid part is that I was trying to call ahead (about 20 minutes until they closed) because gps told me I would be arriving within less than 5 mins of closing, I was trying to make it easier on them. However, the batter was really thick and it didn't cook all the way through. You can see what we pulled off so we could get a decent breading to product ratio.
