ClassPass review: I've been really getting into Circuit Training / HIIT-style workouts lately, so The Phoenix Effect was a logical addition to my CP routine. Came for a 6am Thursday class. It was pretty packed (being 2 days before Halloween probably had something to do with that) but the class utilized the space really nicely and I never felt crowded. Our instructor did well to divide his attention evenly among everyone. I did feel a tad bit rushed as we transitioned from station to station, but only because I'm used to having a little longer than 15 seconds to get set up. Overall though, a great experience, and I'll definitely be back. read more

I've been going here for over 2 years now and never have I seen quite as drastic of a change as I have since joining TPE. Their FIRE, INFERNO, and RIPPED classes are my personal favorite. These HIIT classes are some of the best in LA, and the personal guidance and instruction you get from the coaches sets this studio apart from all of its competitors. I don't know if I'll ever leave. I've attended Phoenix Effect daily (and now twice daily) for the past 18 months. The coaches are highly knowledgeable and motivating, and will provide feedback on form, nutrition, and general health both in and outside of class. Every coach has a different character that makes each class unique and enjoyable. Exercise rotations are sensible and diverse; in fact, I have yet to attend any type of exercise or health establishment where a variety of exercises and equipment is utilized. The owners take pride in the gym as a space and are constantly making new additions to spice up the workouts and challenge us in new ways. Most importantly, this is an authentic community. If you are looking for friends, business associates, and just genuine support during your workout, this is the place you want to be. Charity events, nutrition challenges, personal training, social get togethers...I can't say enough about the intimacy, and how much that contributes to the results. All sessions are programmed by an expert coordinator, but all music playlists reflect the personality of the coaches and purpose of the workout. You'll hear anything from hip-hop to EDM to death metal to punk on any given day. Active social networkers and private pages and feeds where group and individual photos are posted so that you can track your results, ask questions, and just generally enjoy yourselves together outside of class. Amazing workout - the instructors are super friendly and really watch out for form when you do the various exercises. Time really does seem to fly by when doing the circuit. I have visited using class pass so I can't judge the longterm effect of these classes, imagine you'll be getting an awesome workout though going regularly. I can only recommend going! I didn't give the full 5 stars because there are a few little things that could be improved upon in terms of cleanliness (particularly between the different exercises, it would be great if someone could wipe the sweat off the surfaces). It would be advisable to substitute the wooden boxes with foam ones or at least padded ones as they really are a safety hazard and have left me with some scars (granted, my own clumsiness!). Another little thing is that personally, the intro talk at the beginning could be kept shorter - it's great to have the exercise explained in detail, but if it could be sped up a little it would be even better! read more

Got bored of my gym and decided to check out The Phoenix Effect after hearing about it from someone I know. Absolutely love it here! I drive out of my way to come here at 6 am and it's totally worth it. Awesome energy, amazing instructors, and fantastic classes with great variety. I always leave completely spent (in a good way, not the painful OMG-I-just-tore-something kind of way!). I've been to some other boot camp places around the city and they pale in comparison. I just wish they had a shower but honestly it's so great that I don't care that much. Check it out if you haven't already. You won't regret it! read more

This place is amazing. I had been doing Pilates six days a week for nine months prior. I'm fifty and I reached a plateau. Now I'm doing Phoenix five days a week and the results are noticeable and the change in my mood and energy levels is dramatic. All of the instructors are top-notch. They make it fun to burn and sweat. I look forward to every class and I feel high when I leave. Finally, let's talk about Andy. I called in because I lost a Cartier ring while working out. I've been a Phoenix Effect unlimited monthly member for 1.5 years now and I'm in the best shape of my life! The programming is effective and well rounded - each day of the week focuses on a different muscle group and/or movement type (ie. push vs. pull). I try to do 4-5 workouts there a week and it has truly paid off! The coaches are highly knowledgeable and push you to push yourself, while putting form and safety first. They never skimp on warm ups, and always offer regressions for exercises to accommodate newcomers and or anyone with injuries. The community is very welcoming to all types of people, at all fitness levels and even offers optional social events to get to know your classmates better. The Phoenix Effect is more than just a gym. It's an amazing community of coaches and athletes that come together to achieve their own individual goals in the gym as well as team goals outside of the gym which include Obstacle Course Race teams and fundraisers for many incredible organizations. This place has changed my life! I moved to LA one year ago and stumbled upon this gym while using Classpass. I was looking for a gym that mixes HIIT style workouts with heavy lifting as well. The Phoenix Effect does exactly that. Not only did I find the workouts to suit my needs, but this gym goes above and beyond. The community of people that attend are ACTUALLY friends with one another. They do social events on weekends that get the community out of the gym and intermingling with one another. They do nutrition challenges that help you learn about the diet you should be keeping along with your workouts. They do charity Spartan Races to raise money for different causes. It's really a full package deal. If you're curious about their formats, here's how I'd describe them: BURN - the typical HIIT workout. Roughly 10 stations of various exercises that you rotate between on intervals for under a minute or so. LIFT - a class more focused on building up your strength/form, less about ripping through exercises. Typically 4 stations, 10 minutes at each. 1-2 of those stations is a barbell movement (squats, bench press, deadlifts, power cleans, etc.). FIRE - similar to BURN but less stations, longer intervals, and more complex "crossfit-esque" movements (i.e. tire flips, rope climbs, sled pulls, etc.). You also run around the block every time they yell "FIRE." Keeps it interesting! INFERNO - shorter HIIT workout, but higher intensity. Usually you're trying to do as many rounds of the given exercises in the allotted time (maybe 20 minutes or so). BARBELL PARTY - the first half of class is spent teaching you an olympic lift and the second half is spent practicing it in a mini HIIT style workout. Hope this helps! Love this place! When the Phoenix effect opened Max did a wonderful job of creating a bootcamp unlike any other where people felt welcome as a family. Max's style of teaching was all about bringing people together and speaking from his spirit uplifting people making their spirits shine. All of my life, I thought that I was a "mushy" endomorph, doomed never to build visible muscle. Four months after attending The Phoenix Effect bootcamp, I had some random guy at Whole Foods compliment me on my "nice arms"! Not only is my body transforming before my eyes, but I look forward to every class. With competent (sticklers for proper form), knowledgable, fun, kind and energetic instructors, and nice, non-pretentious people to work out with, pumped up music, and varied, full body workouts, I always have a blast. This place if fantastic!!! Don't be discouraged by the person who gave it 1 star after arriving late and not even taking the class (that's an unfair review!). This is a bootcamp unlike any other... no egos, just hard workers, encouraging environment and excellent instruction. The class moves so fast, you'll feel the burn but thanks to the constantly rotating stations you don't get over worked in any particular area. This is great for a full body workout - do yourself a favor and give this a try! If you can, I would highly recommend taking CJ's class - he is encouraging, lots of energy, good music... and the best part, he dances throughout the hour and keeps the tone fun and upbeat. I love an instructor that has some swagger, and he certainly brought it! Staked parking in the back but only 6 spots so arrive early. Probably one of the best workouts out there. It is hard as heck, but nothing compares to the sense of accomplishment you achieve after finishing a session at Phoenix. What you get from The Phoenix Effect is not limited to a whole body, metabolic and conditioning work out, but an uplifting spiritual practice as well! I love Max Phoenix Effect! Ryan and Jovin are the best trainers, encouraging and high energy. These classes kick your booty. It's the best workout you can get around town. I can't get enough of these classes. Every class has difference workouts and you're constantly being challenged. There is never a dull moment and the time flies. The space is also very clean. I had the pleasure of checking this place out thanks to CLASSPASS, and I must admit it was definitely a wonderful experience. I tried the class called BURN, taught by coach Joe, and have been sore over the past 2 days (that's how every workout should be) It was a full body workout composed of shoulder press, push ups, sits, chest press, triceps lifts, hand stand, kettle bell squats, and couple of other things. I've been meaning to leave a review for this place forever. Absolutely love this gym! Fantastic trainers, super effective and fun workouts set to great music in a motivating team environment. Seth Browning is the bomb! He is super motivating, extremely attentive and does a great job explaining everything before class starts. He is also really good at knowing when to push you just enough and I always feel super accomplished after his class. All of the attentiveness of a personal trainer at a fraction of the cost. Parking can be a bit tricky on melrose but you can usually find a spot on la brea or valet out front for $3. read more

Phoenix Effect is the very best. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They are really motivational and encourage you throughout the workout. The training style is completely up my alley and I really hope to see some major changes in my body after sticking with the classes. I highly recommend coming in and trying a class. You can't really go wrong with any of the instructors (I haven't taken everyone and I have yet to have an instructor I didn't like) but Beth, Aaron, & Joe are amazing. That being said, I look forward to taking everyone's classes as I get the impression the standard of trainers in this studio is the extremely high. I love this place. I came to The Phoenix Effect specifically because I was looking for a Lifting class - so I haven't taken Burn or Fire or Fix, this is mostly a review for Phoenix Lift. I've had a surprisingly difficult time finding good lifting classes around. I'm so freaking tired of signing up for a "strength" class at some of these boutique fitness places thinking it's going to be actual strength training only to end up spending 75% of the class doing some stupid cardio BS and the remaining 25% barely lifting more than ten pounds. It's especially bad at women only gyms. Phoenix Lift is nothing like that. It's the real deal - no filler, heavy lifting. I LOVE Aaron - he is probably the best trainer I've ever worked with. Everyone who goes here is very welcoming. Even though I'm not nearly as ripped as some of the other lifters in class, I've never been made to feel inadequate or out of place there. I've gotten so much stronger and leaner since I started taking classes there and I credit a lot of that to Aaron. If you're looking for a REAL lifting class that offers real results, I highly recommend giving The Phoenix Effect a try. Oh and some of the other reviews have mentioned parking - I've personally never had a problem parking here, though I usually go on the weekends and during the day. There's usually plenty of street parking around. And I don't care that there's no showers. read more

There are a lot of studios in the city. You can pretty much get a good workout wherever you go. The things that sets a studio apart are the people. Beth and Kristin just flat out get it! I've only taken Kristin's class and she is best-in-class! I describe her as the Nicest Little Spitfire you ever want to meet. Great instructor and even better person. I expected this class to be challenging and it didn't disappoint! I booked with Open Sweat- super easy (great alternative to Class Pass, too!) and started off with the Phoenix Burn class. CJ, the instructor, was extremely nice and welcoming! He did a great job of explaining everything and creating a comfortable environment. The class was difficult and definitely kicked my butt (more specifically my butt and thigh muscles, along with the rest of my body). I can see how the workout would tone and strengthen over time and will definitely be going back!! read more

The Phoenix Effect: I have never had so much fun working this hard in my life. The coach's energy, support, and enthusiasm coupled with the patron's perseverance, inspiration, and motivation is the perfect storm for success. It makes working out fun. I have officially made the Phoenix effect my home, I have to say I'm even more impressed these past few months since posting this review, with how much the coaches are involved in your success. When I posted I was at 170lbs and now I'm at 155lbs which surpassed my main goal of hitting 160lbs. What I really love is that I'm now going for building muscle and they have classes for that and I've learned so much about form and properly doing my exercises. So glad I took a class there, because I now have a place to go and feel confident and get results. At first glance The Phoenix Effect is a fitness center. It's more than that, it's a game changer. I've been taking their Bootcamp classes for a little over 2 years and the quality of my life and health have skyrocketed with greatness. As a 49 year old diabetic man who wears an insulin pump, the Phoenix effect and their trainers and fitness programs, have helped me reduce my insulin intake by More than 30%, reduce my weight by 18-20 Lbs and accomplish the fitness level of someone 10 years younger than me.
