Well here I am, back at Ballyhoos for some awesome food. You know I have been coming to Sal's…read moreBallyhoo's for so many years and finally decided to leave a review because quite honestly, this restaurant is awesome. I think it is one of the best seafood restaurants in Key Largo hands down. Not large but just right and a favorite for locals. I remember when they use to have the all you can eat Stone Crab, King Crab or Snow Crab for $75 per person. Those days are long gone but they are still firing on all cylinders. The menu is not enormous but it doesn't have to be as they stick to what they know best, mostly seafood with some burgers and sandwiches mixed in between. Can't go wrong with anything on their menu and they do have a Southern feel as a number of dishes have a little kick to them but do not fear, you can always ask them to leave the spicy seasoning off and you are good to go. On this occasion, I decided to go with their Black Bean Soup and the Grilled Mahi Mahi with Roasted Mushrooms. Both were awesome as expected and I really enjoyed the black bean soup; also, the mushrooms were amazing. Being Cuban you would think hey black beans are black beans but their recipe is bar none awesome. Service here is awesome and very laid back as we are in the Florida Key's . They really make you feel at home and are extremely courteous. Evenings are pretty busy and pretty packed so you may have to wait a bit to be seated but it is well worth the wait. Atmosphere is welcoming and you can hear the Jimmy Buffet tunes playing in the background to round out the Florida Key's feel. Feel like striking up a conversation well no problem, that is the norm and encouraged. Parking should not be a problem either but it can get a little packed in the evenings and on weekends. Overall it was a great experience but honestly I did not expect anything less. So if you are driving by mile marker 98.2 on the Overseas Highway, and are hungry for some good food, well keep your eyes peeled for the sign as you cannot miss it. Wishing you a great time in the keys. Enjoy and Bon Appétit m'es amis!

The tomato soup was great - it had pesto mixed in, making for an unexpected and appealing mix of flavors. The tuna sashimi was fine. The fried whole snapper was superb, and even perfectly plated (it looked like it was swimming on the plate). Marnie loved the sweet potato fries and the homemade ketchup with which they came for dipping. I devoured the sautéed green beans (with bacon salt). She loved the key lime crème brûlée - an unusual twist on a key lime pie, which would certainly work for someone who is gluten-free. And the lemon blueberry pie was sweet and tasty, although a little heavy.

The sampler comes with two conch fritters, two coconut shrimp, two bacon wrapped items (which we replaced), cracked conch, and lobster and conch ceviche. I have to say this while it's fresh in my mind. The moment I had the lobster and shrimp ceviche, I got chills. Just an incredible burst of flavor. Tiny bit of heat at the end but nothing overwhelming. Just really, really good. The conch fritters are solid too. Chewy, not over breaded, and served with two sauces. One is sweet and one is more of a mayo style. There's also something that eats like a conch curry puff situation. I liked the cracked conch better personally, but both are worth trying. The coconut shrimp is also really good. The sampler also comes with tortilla chips on the side. The lobster bisque is delicious. Great flavor with little chunks of what I'm pretty sure is lobster throughout. Nothing more to add really. It's just good. The mahi and avocado dish has a nice seared taste to it. Not flame broiled exactly, but that kind of grilled sear that you want on fish. The pico de gallo is similar to what came with the ceviche, and it works really well here. All in at $75.

Although the menu was heavy with seafoods, I ordered a club wrap with fries. My lunch partner ordered conch tacos with tortilla chips. The wrap itself was wheat based. It included ham, turkey, bacon, tomato, lettuce, cheese with an unknown sauce. It was good but the ham should've been sliced thinner rather than big chunks of ham. The fries were seasoned well. The conch tacos were good. The conch was fried and mixed with picol and red cabbage in a soft tortilla shell. The dish was accompanied by tortilla chips. All was tasty. The staff was knowledgeable. The prices were reasonable.

At the recommendation of friends, our Day 1 Supper was at Mrs. Mac's Kitchen II (also called Mrs…read more Mac's Kitchen (Big) on Google Maps). Having arrived at 4:30pm, we were immediately shown to a table and informed about the happy hour specials. Not normally ones to drink much on vacation, my wife and I instead opted to live in the moment and enjoy the island life, especially since it was 30 degrees when we left Ohio that morning. As such, we each ordered a rum punch (pictured), while my best friend ordered a Bulliet old fashioned and his wife a house margarita. With drink orders out of the way, Deja, our absolutely delightful waitress, took our food orders: sauteed seafood combo (for my wife), backyard BBQ burger with coleslaw (for me), burger and fries (for my BFF and his wife, who -unlike us- were smart enough to save room for dessert). While waiting for our meals, we took in the ambiance of the restaurant, and wow was there a lot to take in! First off, we loved how the old Pizza Hut building had been repurposed and transformed into the embodiment of the tropical island lifestyle. From the display tables showcasing seashells and historic Florida Keys photos, to the license plate light fixtures, to the ceiling-mounted blue sky and clouds panels, to the fish hanging in front of each distinctively Pizza Hut trapezoidal window, we loved it all! When our food arrived, it looked fantastic and tasted even better. My wife described her seafood combo as being excellent, with the Caribbean lobster "almost as good as the ones we get in Maine." Likewise, her fish was fresh and delicious, while the shrimp were succulent. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and was topped with expertly caramelized onions and bacon with just the right amount of crispness to it. My coleslaw side was also excellent, with the perfect balance of creaminess and zing. Our friends also said their burger and shoestring fries were fantastic. To round out our meal, each of the four of us ordered pieces of Key Lime Pie, which was some of the best I have ever had in my life (and I have eaten a lot of Key Lime Pies!)! Throughout our meal, Deja checked on us often without being overbearing, and kept the drinks flowing. All told, for 5 drinks, 3 entrées with sides, and 4 slices of Key Lime Pie, our bill before tax, tip, and credit card surcharge was $163.93. Considering the excellent food and outstanding service we received, the four of us universally agreed it was well worth the price! Pros: outstanding service, fantastic flavours, great atmosphere, and the 2-for-1 drinks during happy hour were a great deal! Cons: none! Overall we rate Mrs. Mac's Kitchen as being Excellent and cannot wait to go back!

Friendly, but talked a little too much and didn't write anything down, so kept forgetting things. The Ugly: Unsure about the entire restaurant, but our table was dirty. Like old dirty. Not like, they didn't wipe it down, but more like it had never seen a deep clean and stuff just kept accumulating. I had the shrimp and corn chowder. It was very watery. We enjoyed the desserts. I'm not sure if I would come back though. I'm just wondering if the whole restaurant is dirty like our table.

Not sure if it's because we are a large party 10 or more, or what? Our last visit was a Sunday evening in early July . We ate outside. Waiter was good at getting water out to everyone. But when it came to drink orders we must have waited 15-20 minutes for him to take our drink orders. I had to ask him to take my appetizer order. We had to ask several times for our drinks - soft drinks- not alcoholic. They were not good at cleaning our dirty appetizer plates away after delivering dinner leaving the table crowded. I think what I found most annoying was watching our server and another server standing around while we were waiting for drinks, for order taking, for refills, etc. There was just no attention being paid to us. Maybe the guy was new? Not sure. The restaurant wasn't very busy so that wasn't the excuse. I've heard it's difficult to get good help in the Keys. Cost a lot to live here. Most commute from Homestead. Anyway- good for the food - don't expect great service. Ironically I did over tip. I was a server in college so I try to be generous.
