The food at Pipers was excellent. We enjoyed the outdoor seating as my friend and I each had a small dog with us. When we walked up to the deck, the sign read ask hostess to seat you on the deck. No one was there and we didn't want to go inside with the dogs, so we asked a waitress who was walking back inside, could she get the hostess? The waitress did not respond, and just walked inside. When she came back out (not acknowledging us), my friend said "so was that a yes, or a no?" She responded, she'll be right out. The hostess asked us High Top or regular table, and then seated us. The waiter came, got our drinks, but we hadn't looked at the menu yet. He finally came back, once we closed the menus, and he took our orders. We noticed that he brought a bowl of water out for another dog, but didn't ask us if our dogs wanted water. Once our food came out, he didn't ask if we needed anything else (my friend needed Catsup for her fries) and I had asked for mayo which he had said they would put on the side, but they didn't. We just felt like we were invisible. The staff seemed unfriendly. There was no "how was your meal, would you like dessert?" We were exploring Raleigh with the thought of moving there. Our First time back at Piper's in over a year. We arrived at 1:00 on Wednesday. Twenty or so eating, but not crowded. We were seated at a booth quickly, but it took 10 minutes for the waitress to get to us. She seemed to have the majority of patrons so I'll give her that. We ordered the fish and chips with fries and my partner order the stuffed flounder with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. The Mac and cheese has an up charge of $3 if you want it as a side. The meals came within 15 and were huge. The portions seemed to have increased as well as the prices. They were for the most part excellent with the exception of the sauce under the stuffed flounder. I think mistakingly the chef put too much black pepper in it as it would burn your throat. It was so much food that we took home half. The only downside to our lunch was that the waitress never came back by, asked if everything was good, but she did come by with the check when she noticed we were finished. If service was better, my review would be a 5. We will be returning as lots of menu choices. read more

We recently went to Piper's Tavern for a family birthday and enjoyed it quite a bit. The restaurant has a classic family-owned feel to it. The menu was thick, with several pages in one of those classic leather-bound casings. The staff all wore t-shirts with the name of the restaurant on the front. The place is well taken care of, feeling nice and clean. Though the style is a bit like that of a restaurant that I grew up going to in Indiana in the 90's. That's not necessarily bad, it feels very nostalgic. The staff all seemed very kind, and there is a laid back feeling to the place. The menu's offerings are extensive as well. The sandwiches and entrees are all the types of foods that have a comforting feeling to them. I ended up having a Chicken Parmesan sandwich which was very tasty. I saw a server walk by with the fish and chips though, and was having food envy. It was a LARGE plate. I get the sense that all of the portions here are generous, and none of the dishes will disappoint. It's an easy recommendation if you're in the area. I'd be happy to go again. It's more cozy lunch vibes than fancy date night, but you'll walk away full-bellied and satisfied by delicious food. read more

I met 4 friends June 25, 2026 for dinner at Piper's and we were seated at the high tops along the back wall. Our waitress seemed to have that whole section and yet she kept up with all her tables m. One of the guys had the prime rib special, which is always amazing. I wanted something less heavy and ordered the shrimp and grits. I have had shrimp and grits in Memphis, New Orleans, and Charleston SC and Piper's version of shrimp and grits was the best. Just Plain Good Piper's feels good - like an old shoe or old pair of jeans. Laid back atmosphere, great service, eclectic menu and delicious food. We have eaten here many times over the years, but a recent visit with our family prompted this review. We made a reservation during a busy time. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were seated immediately. The waiter was there with menus and water as soon as we sat down. He helped us with the menu, made some recommendation and took our orders. A few minutes the food began to arrive, We all shared a giant plate of Nachos - delicious. The grandsons loved the Chicken Tenders, Cheeseburgers and Mac & Cheese. I dug into a Shepherd's Pie. Other adult options included Cajun BBQ Shrimp, Meatloaf, Cuban Sandwich and a small Bacon-Cheddar Burger Pizza. Everything was spot on. Great service, friendly and quick. We had the fish and chips, already noted as very good, although I prefer thinner fries but it wasn't my meal. The dish I ordered was so good!! The beef and broccoli with a ginger sauce, so good! It is a large dish, I took half home and it was still a lot but so good. Stopped in for lunch, we ate here about 10+ years ago and had a very average meal. We hoped today might be different... The pros - drinks and food served fast! Staff very friendly. Restrooms clean. The crab dip was delicious, house made potato chips very good! Cons - the southwest salad was just average, husband said wouldn't order it again. My shrimp and grits was very odd tasting. When I think of shrimp and grits, I figure the typical Southern white grits, cheddar on top, grilled shrimp and bacon with scallions. This was not it. Very different than what I expected. New to North Raleigh area and stubbled across this tavern. The staff is very inviting and the ambiance is very casual which is great! They have plenty of drinks from drafts, bottles, and liquors. They have different events that go on nightly. The food is pretty tasty. We have tried the pizza, quesadilla, and the smothered pork chop. This place would've gotten 5 stars if it wasn't for the pork chops. The gravy had no taste, the pork chops were tough, and the green beans needed some seasoning. I've only ordered takeout from this location twice and I got fish & chips both times. Both times they left out the tartar sauce which completely takes away from the meal. I sent them two messages and they refused to answer although the system shows the message was read. The customer service is just as bad as the takeout service and the food was cold. I will say the portion size of the fish is generous which is why it was terrible to have no sauce with it! Someone else picked up the order both times but just check your order before leaving. read more

Had a cooler night so we decided to ait outside! Cute atmosphere. Very laid back and chill. We tried three different appetizers and they did not disappoint! The Bavarian, pretzel sticks came out soft and hot, with the cheese dip with a little cake. These were definitely my favorite dish of the night. We also got the stuffed puppies. Basically a pork eggroll with a creamy coleslaw. Outside was super crunchy and paired. Well with the coleslaw. Last one we got was the chicken quesadilla. After living in Raleigh for five years, I finally ate here for the first time today. The service was excellent! Our waitress was very attentive and on top of things. We went at 12:30 p.m. and it was much less crowded and busy than I expected it to be. The restaurant was clean and not too noisy. There were plenty of televisions showing different games. I had the holiday mule drink and let me tell you it took everything in me not to keep ordering it lol! It was sooooo good, but I had to drive home and didn't want to risk getting a DUI lol. I also had the nachos with chicken. They were okay, but kind of dry and difficult to swallow. Some salsa would have been nice. I dined at Piper's Tavern in a large group. they have an elevated seating area and that worked well for the group. Service was friendly. I went with the fish and chips. The portion was large but the arrangement on the plate made the chips soggy with the fish on top of the chips. I'd order something else if I return. The fish was good as were the chips not under the fish. It is too bad they weren't put to the side of the plate. We were all shocked when the checks arrived with the extra 3.5% charge for using a credit card. So what happened in most cases is that was taken from the tip to the server. read more

I think this may become a pre-Christmas Eve dinner spot for me and my wife and we may make this a traditional thing. After a semi-hectic week of hosting the book club - neighbor Christmas party, traveling, shopping and prepping the house again for the family Christmas Eve extravaganza, a Friday night dinner at Piper's Tavern was in order. We have been there before, mostly just for drinks in the past. But, we haven't visited since pre Covid. It was busy and festive last night. What I like about the layout and atmosphere is it reminds me of a place you would find back on Staten Island where we are from. The menu is mostly bar type entrees and appetizers. We sat at the end of the bar near where the food was being brought out. Everything looked so good and the portions were huge! I was eyeing the Chicken Franchaise and the Meatloaf but, the plates and servings were so big I knew leftovers were coming home. I decided to go with the Shepherds Pie, my wife, the Patty Melt and kettle chips. The pie was delicious and just like one you would get "up north." My wife enjoyed the melt but the chips were a little bland. Not a big deal. At this age you need to curb the salt a bit lol. She had a glass of Prosecco, I went with a dirty Martini. It was dirty but, they were out of the blue cheese stuffed olives. The drink itself was good! We don't live far from here and we need to visit more often just for drinks, appetizers or dinner. We have eaten at Pipers before and had great experience. However, after our experience tonight we will not be returning. I understand that service can lack a bit when a restaurant is busy but my husband and I felt unwelcome tonight. Not because we were the only African Americans in the entire place. That has been the case before with no issues. Tonight we arrived about 730 pm and were told that we were the first in the waiting list and should be seated in about 15 minutes. They took our phone number and said they would text, so we went and sat in the car. After about 30 minutes, with no text, we walked in to find other patrons being seated. The hostess apologized and told us we would be seated next. She also told us to tell our server that our appetizer would be complementary. We ordered two entrees and an order of buffalo wings as an appetizer. We didn't tell the server that they were to be comped because we didn't feel that was our place. We were just willing to pay for the entire meal as planned. Well, our appetizer never arrived. So we told the food runner just to cancel them since our meal had arrived. We received no apology, just ok. The server never refilled our drinks and came to the table only once other than to bring the check. Long story we felt very unwelcome at Pipers and will never return. Maybe this is not a place for everyone and definitely not for us. read more

Nearly $80 with tip for two sodas, appetizer, burger with mac and cheese and chicken tenders with fries. $.50 charge for a bbq sauce and $5 upcharge for subbing mac and cheese as a side. The "medium well" burger was dry and overcooked, but well seasoned. Mac and cheese was excellent! Tenders and fries were average. You can get the same quality food for half the price at half a dozen other sports bars in Raleigh. Skip this one. read more

I can only do so much fried at one time, so to be able to get mashed taters and green beans with it makes me super happy. Most recent visit, I had the stuffed flounder, which was still really good despite being just a tad overcooked. Would have loved a bit more of the sauce. Husband usually gets pizza or sandwiches and has never been disappointed. Yes prices have risen here recently, but they have everywhere. At least here, portions are very generous. I always get two meals out of what I get. Service can be a bit iffy, just because they are always so busy! It's a popular place, for good reason. I went to Piper's to celebrate and have a good meal. I got the smothered pork chops and kind felt like I'd be better off microwaving a frozen meal from the supermarket. The pork chops were rather dry and tasted reheated, maybe microwaved. The gravy on them had no flavor and tasted like something that came premade in a can. The mashed potatoes weren't made from real potatoes and were probably some instant mashed potatoes. The green beans were the best part but were likely frozen as well. I ate lunch at Pipers last Tuesday with a group of friends. The restaurant was crowded. We were seated and placed our order. My chicken quesadilla was not the quality I was expecting - it consisted of dried out chicken and a few vegetables. I felt like it was leftover chicken which sat for a few days, I did not want anyone else to be served this chicken. Since I was with a group I didn't want to inconvenience them to have to wait until I ordered something else. I decided to take it home and feed it to my dog. I did mention this to the hostess and she said she would advise the chef and I would be contacted. I never heard from the chef even after contacting the restaurant two days later. I am disappointed in your restaurant and needless to say I will not be visiting your restaurant again.
