The Monroeville location at the mall hasn't disappointed in the freshness department. However, yesterday, we bought some for Valentine's Day, and half of it was crumbs and seeds. On a busy Saturday, there was a long line but fortunately it moved quickly. We got a bag each of the Wisconsin cheddar, salted caramel, and peanut butter. Ok. I did it. I made my first visit to the Pittsburgh Popcorn Company. The first thing I quickly learned, is that people can get really excited about popcorn. I am glad there was a line, and a bit of a wait. This allowed me to watch and listen to customers as they approached the counter to profess their love for their flavor of choice. No judgements. To each their own. Trust me, some of the flavor choices were so far out there. At one point, one patron was under so much pressure with making her choice, that the suggestion was made to combine the 2 flavors into the same bag. This seemed to ease her tension and line began to move once again. I opted for the Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese, and was very impressed with the taste and quality. I was even more impressed, and surprised, to see how much popcorn can be stuffed into the bag. It's great that they offer 3 different bag sizes and prices. I really enjoyed my first visit to the Pittsburgh Popcorn Company and need to add that I really think it was more about the experience itself. They pop it and season it right there, so it's always fresh. I really want to like the Pittsburgh Popcorn Company, but sadly I think it's overrated. I took my friends from out of town here as I had read so many good things about it. When we got there, it was 15 minutes before the store closed, and there was a long line. My friends and I bought the peanut butter and chocolate, cinnamon toast and kettle flavors, and everything was good. Not spectacular though. I may be a little harsh, as I was going in with very high expectations. Or maybe we were not here on a week with very good flavors of the week. They have several locations, but you can check out a monthly menu outlining the different flavors at each store for the week. This is convenient for me because I like to know I'm not going to miss any of my favorite flavors if they have them. A few of the flavors that I like the most are the mint chocolate cookie, smashed Oreo, hazelnut Nutella, peanut butter cup, and Rice Krispie treat. Don't get me wrong, the salty flavors are fantastic, too. Their basic Wisconsin cheddar mixed with the caramel corn is a combination to die for. It sounds strange but don't knock it until you try it! As a person who once didn't prefer popcorn besides during a movie, I'm now happily a huge fan. The Peanut Butter Chocolate was an excellent exercise in salty/sweet dynamics played atop some of the fluffiest popcorn one will ever munch on while watching "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" for the umpteenth time.
