We had them out for a consultation, discussed what we were looking for and hired them to give a landscape design. We loved the design so much that we decided to continue on with the process. been several yrs that this outfit did our yard. initially things looked good. But in time the plants got a bit into competing for space. appears that no judgement taken into consideration for growth. just too many plants were planted. plants were getting too big. bigger than described. the water irrigation flow had to be redone. a few months back had to drain my pool and discovered that the pvc pipe for discharged was damaged in two places causing water to build in in front yard. (they 'dug up' an old plant in that area.... and shame on me not testing that water flow for any issues....shame on me) . and just recently had to replace irrigation water valve due to making squealing noise. the noise been going on for a while. time for a replacement. well inspecting the old valve wiring, found that wire nut was damaged/ cracked open and they put some electrical tape around it to hold in place. can you believe that??? could not spend the time to replace a simple wire nut? and all that $$ spent. I have been asked many times, would you recommend.... my answer has been a big NO. do more research and investigate other outfits. why posting now?? i have been putting off as several yrs have passed. been doing lots to work to make things better. but this recent valve replacement thing, the cracked wire nut caused a wire to come loose and stop irrigation. the result was a loss of two plants. shame on me for not catching it sooner. good luck people. need to be vigilant. read more

I can't say enough good things about my Plant Nerd experience. Korina has brilliant ideas and is incredibly creative and easy to deal with. She is totally open to other ideas; I had some very specific things that I thought were important to me which she gladly incorporated into her design. However, it's clear to me now that she has way better ideas than I do! That's why she is the plant nerd! The whole experience from beginning to end was fun, from the creation of the design which was presented very clearly in a diagram with a key that explained every bit of the plan, to meeting in their really great office space and hanging out in the 'living room' to see a big screen presentation of the design, and then the nursery walk where you get to see the plants in person and pick exactly what you like. The crew was professional and knew exactly what they were doing. Every day they left things very neat and organized for the next day. They completed both my front and back yards in 3 days, including all landscaping, a drip watering system, and lighting. I regretted one plant choice I had made and Korina arranged to have those plants removed and replaced with something that fit better, no hassle at all! Anyway, I could not be happier with the way my yards have turned out, and I am so grateful to everyone at the Plant Nerd for their hard work making it happen! They will work with the budget you have in mind and it will still turn out great. We did both our front and backyard and worked with them over a year period (due to our own personal timing) but they made sure everything turned out perfect. I hired the Plant Nerd to redo my front yard, which they did in September 2018. While I was happy with the design, I am not happy with the result. I specifically asked them to do weed prevention because I was looking for something very low-maintenance. However, a few months after the installation, weeds started to appear. I contacted the company and was told that it was normal and to use Round-up. Things got even worse after the winter -- most of my old landscaping came back and started covering the new landscaping put in by the Plant Nerd. When I emailed them about this problem, I got this response from Korina: "We consider 'weeds' any plant that is coming up where it is unwanted. We did do a very thorough job with removals and these particular plants are coming up from root. When we did the removals, we removed as much of the root system as we could to help control future sprouting. But there is no preventative maintenance product that we can use or that is available to prevent plants from coming up from root. When we do a design and and installation, we provide information and also discuss with all of our clients what the first year weed abatement will entail. Any plants that are coming up from roots (grasses, cannas, etc.) need to be sprayed with Round up when they surface in order to take the poison down to the roots. Digging them up is one part of getting rid of them, but any small shred of root left in the soil has the potential to germinate. Eliminating these kinds of plants from a landscape is never a one shot deal. It is a process that requires a very small amount of maintenance when they surface. They need to be sprayed with round up. Had they been sprayed when they were discovered, they would have died off quickly not overtaken the new landscape. The other type of weeds that come up will be from seeds. We install Preen during the installation and this is to help kill off the weeds that germinate after we are gone. But Preen only has a 3-4 months life and needs to be used four times in the first year. Different seeds germinate at different times during the year so applying this three more times in the first year is very important. We do not provide this service but we do provide information about this in our design binder. I spoke to Chris and he told me he had come out to discuss weed abatement with you and provided you with a quote for a quarterly maintenance that would easily manage this. Most of our clients take care of this on their own but we offer this service for those that don't want to. Would you like to schedule a service call for us to come out and remove these weeds? At this point, we recommend just pulling them out since they are encroaching on the other plants. But you will need to keep round up on hand and spray these particular plants as they sprout. They will eventually stop coming up because the round up will kill off the roots." I don't agree with Korina's opinion because three years before the Plant Nerd redid my front yard, I hired an artificial turf company to remove plants from the center of the front yard (pretty much the same plants the Plant Nerd had to remove from the edge) and cover this area with stones. After they did that, until now I have not had any plants or weeds come up in this area. Obviously, it can be done. Many people who visit me are surprised that my old plants are back after I've paid thousands of dollars for new landscaping. I am also surprised that Korina suggested Roundup, which is very toxic and carcinogenic. It is banned in many countries and many SoCal cities stopped using it, including Irvine, Costa Mesa, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, etc. I am surprised that she is recommending this product, which is very bad for people and animals and for the Earth in general. I will have to take care of this problem myself (these plans are not easy to pull out and they are often very close to the cactuses planted by the Plant Nerd, which makes it even harder to remove them) or hire someone who can do it effectively in an environmentally-friendly manner. Needless to say, I am very disappointed in the the work done by the Plant Nerd. read more

I knew I wanted drip irrigation, drought resistant plantings, fruit trees, succulents and a container garden for my newly hardscaped patio, but I didn't have any idea how to put it all together. Then I saw The Plant Nerd on YouTube -- they had won the Roger's Gardens California Friendly Garden competition at least 3 times! Korina came up with a gorgeous landscape plan for my lower and upper garden that included lighting. She even found ways to relocate my existing succulents and oddly shaped stones into the new design. Chris' installation crew was friendly and professional. Installation was scheduled over a 2 day period, but they managed to complete the work in just 1 day and it all looks amazing. They were professional, had great ideas and suggestions, and took the time to listen to what we wanted and what we didn't want. Their plans were presented to us in a timely manner and they made each and every change we requested. When it came time to choose our plants, they spent two hours walking the nursery with us and helping us select our trees, shrubs and flowers. I chose this company based on their website and pictures. I was very happy with each phase and enjoyed working with their entire staff. Korina, the owner, showed up in a mask and listened carefully to our wishes, was familiar with the Cities "Lawn to Garden" requirements and developed a beautiful design for us that allowed us to get City reimbursements. She was always helpful with comments and changes and very knowledgeable. We decided to also go with this company for the total installation. The crews were cooperative and very ready to discuss anything that came up. They supplied all that had been promised, did careful, clean, work and when, at the end, I expressed a slight disappointment about the size of one tree and fewer than expected large rocks, Jay, the crew member who secured supplies fixed it beautifully. He even came back later with some extra supples to help us maintain our yard. Their 6 week follow up was thorough and helpful. From Korina's amazing designs for my front & back yards, to the most concise & complete design package presented in a notebook, to the awesome crew who did all of the work - I am beyond happy & completely satisfied! Korina asked me what I hoped the yards would be like & I explained that I wanted to use the hardscape I had, the glazed pottery I had & most importantly to utilize in some fashion a part of my giant liquid amber that needed to be removed from the front yard. I also explained that I wanted to be able to walk out of my back door & into my back yard & find a place that was peaceful & serene - & boy, did the Plant Nerd deliver! The tree was cut down (boo hoo!), but stepping stones were cut from the trunk & placed in my front yard! And how about that crew? They were professional, knowledgeable & fun to work with. i found this company to be very shallow in discusssing landscaping needs for my single family residence. i express what i did not want or desire and yet the poor plans presented to me were exactly what i indicated that i did not desire. rather than presenting me with a professional design by using a cad program, i was presented with a 3 ring binder with pictures of plants and a design that i did not appreciate. the design as presented reminded me of what a 10 year could do by going to the internet and downloading a bunch of meaningless items. overall the design was very poor and she was so presumptuous that i would go foward with such a poor presentation. my 8 year old could have done a better job. needless to say i thanked her and got and left the office. never again would i consider this company for my landscaping needs. i would hire someone from the local kinder garden school. i am sure their presentation would be more professional. if she comes to your domicile, run, run and savew your money. i gave this company a one star only because it does not allow for a negative rating. Love them. Paid over $36,000 to convert to drought tolerant and drip system and lighting for front and back yard. Many compliments from passers by. Then later had them do my quarterly maintenance to upkeep which was necessary. Seems they lost their receptionist and in the process I fell out of the schedule for maintenance. New gal, not so good, said I had to wait a month to get a new estimate for maintenance. Waited, and sticker shock to refresh. I just wanted my quarterly maintenance back. But then they decided not to provide maintenance service any longer. It's very difficult to find drought tolerant ongoing care. They had no recommendations on who can help. They were great, although expensive as heck, for the many years they have taken care of me. But feel abandoned now on upkeep. What I learned is drought tolerant requires more care than you might expect. Grass maintenance is much less money and easier to find someone for maintenance. read more

These people are geniuses. Their designs are beautiful, and their customer service is outstanding. I wish that all companies that I dealt with were this pleasant and productive. I did a complete reno of my front and large backyard. We basically started from scratch. I had four companies submit designs and Sarah was the only one that I felt really understood what I wanted and worked within my budget. She walked me through everything, answered all of my questions (quickly) and definitely knew everything that was important in design and characteristics of plants. They gave me the design on time and the materials to have other softscape installers quote, even though they provide that service too. I chose them for installation. We used the Plant Nerd to landscape our corner lot home in Costa Mesa. Before we hired them our front, side, and back yards were in really bad shape. Our grass had given way to weeds and our plants were either over grown or dying. We worked with them to give us a drought tolerant landscape with a fence, a front porch, water features front and back, a pergola in the back and plenty of new plants all around the house. Their design (Sarah did the design and it really showed her talent) was beautiful and they worked with us to make sure we were happy every step of the way. For the hardscape they gave us a few choices and based on their experiences, we chose The Garden Pros. It's been a year since the project was completed and it still looks wonderful. They are providing maintenance a few times a year to pull weeds, rake leaves and replace plants that died. Their attitude has always been positive and pleasant.
