We absolutely loved our stay at The Plaza. Every single staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful and gracious. The private parking lot was super convenient, and at $15 a night was very reasonable. I immediately fell in love with the vibe and decor of the hotel. It reminded me of an old Parisian apartment building with its dark wood, leaded glass windows in the cafe, and ivy-covered walls. Our room was huge and well appointed, with a full kitchen and dishes, pots and pans, and ice in the freezer. There was a closet, some built in drawers, an iron and ironing board, an in-room safe, and day-to-night adjustable window shades. The bathroom had an old, classic feel but was updated with nice fixtures and some storage cubbies. For those looking to stay, note that there is no elevator and no central air conditioning. The hotel is dog-friendly. In the same building are residences. The cafe is only open for breakfast and lunch but there are many other places to eat within walking distance. The neighborhood was clean and very walkable. I would not hesitate to stay here again and definitely recommend it!

This hotel is 99 years old, the windows, stairs, floors, woodworks; etc are original and very well maintained; it was beautiful and cleaned. We went there for breakfast; the bacons were thick, crispy; the eggs were fluffy and delicious; the coffee was perfect! I didn't care for the pancakes because it was not as fluffy as I like and dense in the center.

PROS: This place has very nice design and is very picturesque. Your room key is literally a set of brass keys which adds to the overall throwback experience. Everything is old school but works well. Stayed here for NM ANNUAL MEETING and was pleased with my choice. It helped that Lime scooters are available - the trip to FISERV on a lime from here is fun and easy. The staff are nice and accommodating. I enjoyed my time there although there were some drawbacks. CONS: room 186 is right next to the dumpsters and stairs which means your hear EVERTHING. Trying to nap between GENERAL SESSION and breakout sessions can be a challenging since staff are hustling and bustling (cleaning staff didn't care about the noises they made). It is an OLD hotel so coming in with the expectation that nothing is modern, including insulation, will help you to come in with the right expectation. I would definitely stay here except insist on not being close to the stairwell or cleaning closet. The last thing that was weird was at around 10:00am on my day to checkout, I could hear the cleaning crew trying to enter my room even though I had the privacy door tag hung outside and checkout isn't until 11:00am....I let the front desk know but I'm curious is that has happened to anyone else. Seems odd.

The hotel itself was cute. Liked a lot of the little amenities - coffee pods, scent of shampoo/conditioner, etc. However, the vending machines are in the basement with the laundry so that was a little odd. They don't have a front parking space/reception area for check in so that was tough with traffic/lack of parking. We received inconsistent messaging on pricing for some of the add-on costs they administer. First, we weren't told about any early check in cost. Then, it was $30. Then, it became $25. Also, parking on-site is $15 per car/per room a day. It seemed they just kept making up figures to make more money off your stay. When we checked out, we were told we would just be charged the parking and room rate. But, when we received our belated bill (over a week later), it included a random charge meant as the early check in charge (~$22). Make up your mind and make it clear to customers. The misrepresentations were tough to keep up with. Not my favorite stay downtown.

Came here with my son and Chelsey after the Thanksgiving holiday for brunch. We were seated quickly, this hotel is underrated . The food was great we had a superb brunch date .The scenery puts you in the holiday spirit. Thank you to The Plaza Hotel for making the time spent with my loved ones memorable.

In A Nutshell: -The Plaza Hotel is a super nice place to stay while you are in MKE. -You can tell there is a lot of history in this building, it has the old bones, but the rooms are updated to modern amenities. -I rented a nice studio apartment, which had a comfortable king size bed, a full kitchen w/ stove, fridge, utensils, pot/pan, microwave. -There was a small bar w/ barstools to eat off of, plus a couple chairs to sit. -The bathroom was adequate. -I really like the private feel of staying here w/ separate rear building entrance/exit to the parking lot. -There are also coin-operated laundry machines which are always convenient. -The restaurant inside the hotel is very retro & the food is really good (i.e. their breakfast & burgers). -I also like the location of this hotel b/c there is the Metro Market grocery store right across the street to grab food & beverages. -The neighborhood is called Lower East Side & it's very quiet. -It's walking distance to a lot of places. Overall, if you decide to book a stay here, I highly suggest you book out as far in advance as possible b/c this place is very popular with travelers.

We LOVED our stay at the plaza hotel! Where do I begin?! The staff was friendly, helpful, accommodating, attentive. Their recommendations for things to do were spot on! The rooms were cute and cozy. I loved the decor and the mix of Art Deco and modern design. The room was spotless. We really enjoyed having the kitchenette. Saved money and liked the convenience. Along with all the accessories to use in the kitchen, such as, pots, pans, toaster, bottle opener, cutlery, plates, bowls, mugs, glasses. Above and beyond! The cast iron tub made for a lovely, deep soaking relaxing bath. Fluffy, clean white towels with all the typical bath accessories, including make up remover towelettes. A special treat was the beautiful courtyard garden to enjoy food, drink and music. The scallops were amazing!! I highly recommend a stay at this hotel. We will definitely be back!!

I loved this place when I stayed in Milwaukee and would totally stay in it again. When we first rolled into Milwaukee, having found this place in a travel guide we picked up at a rest stop, blindly picking a name from a list, I'll be honest as we rolled into town we were like... uh oh... I mean I've seen ghetto's but I ain't never seen dogfighting in a corner like I did in Milwaukee, but then we crossed the bridge and this place like popped out of no where. Beautiful! So old and vintage looking too. Beyond just the amazing appearance the location can't be beat. You can really walk anywhere you want to go from here, and hell the cost of the apartments was tempting as well. I almost didn't go home! The only slight downsides was the age did show at times, the bathrooms were pretty old school, in fact our bathroom door couldn't close completely. Not a big deal for a couple, but I could see that being "ick" in other pairings. It could probably use a slight renovation, but then part of the appeal of the place is it's age and history, and honestly you're way better spending a few extra to stay here then some crumby motel 6 in the ratty part of town.

The Plaza Cafe has gone upscale a notch or two but it's still a comfortable place to sit for breakfast by yourself or with a friend. The prices have gone up a notch as well, but the good thing is that the food has gone up two. A new thing on the menu since I last visited is the corned beef hash, and it is the the best I've ever eaten. I ordered it with poached eggs, which were prepared perfectly. Poached eggs are becoming a lost art. There is no better hangover cure in the world than good corned beef hash with poached eggs (besides more drinking, which you can do here as well). The Plaza Cafe is really now quite elegant, yet it is still a diner. If you know any crybabies who hate diners, take them here to shut them up. The coffee is strong and real. There is good music playing. There is no enormous flat-screen TV to ruin the atmosphere. And the men's room (which is actually off the lobby of the hotel) is the best men's in town. Take a newspaper and a smoke, there's a standing ashtray in the private toilet stall. I can't speak for the lady's lounge.

From the moment I walked in, the lobby was overwhelmed with a heavy, Axe body spray-like scent--so strong it felt like walking through a middle school locker room. I assumed it was temporary and that my room would be a relief, but unfortunately, it was worse. The room smelled musty, like a house that hasn't been aired out in years. To make matters worse, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls, which is unacceptable for a hotel at this level. Beyond that, the overall cleanliness of the hotel was lacking. For a boutique property, I expected a much higher standard, but the space felt worn and not well-maintained. The bed was hard and uncomfortable, and the towels were rough--far from the soft, high-end feel you'd expect. The most concerning part of my stay, though, was waking up at 1:45 AM struggling to breathe. It genuinely felt like a reaction to something in the room--possibly mold or poor air quality. I initially thought I was getting sick, but after spending a few hours away the next day, I felt completely normal again, which makes it hard to ignore the room as the cause. If you have any respiratory sensitivities, be cautious. I contacted the front desk to explain the situation and was told checking out early without being charged for another night wouldn't be an issue. I even offered to return around noon so they could turn the room, but was told not to worry since they weren't sold out. When I returned later that day, there was no note, and the staff refused to honor what I had been told, citing the late checkout time. While I understand policies, the inconsistency and lack of follow-through were frustrating. I also dined at the hotel restaurant, which didn't help the experience. The food was overpriced for the quality--my salad was warm, fries were room temperature, and clearly sat out too long. Dessert was equally disappointing; the lemon tart was buried under an excessive amount of powdered sugar, making it unpleasant to eat. It's honestly a sad day when I transferred to a basic airport hotel--Hyatt Place Milwaukee Airport--and had a significantly better experience. The bed was more comfortable, the towels were actually soft, and even the shampoo and conditioner were noticeably better quality. On top of that, the Hyatt was spotless, which only made the lack of cleanliness at Iron Horse stand out even more. Overall, this stay fell far below expectations. Between the condition of the room, air quality concerns, cleanliness issues, and poor service recovery, I won't be returning.

On to the hotel. Warm and comfortable is what it strikes you as. Lots of wooden beams, brick, and good lighting. We arrived and were provided with our room key. We got up to the room, and see the pictures. Nice room, comfortable bed, but some interesting issues. My wife was a little cold, so she set the heat up. We were in the room, it didn't get warmer, so I set the heat up to 75 (she had it at 72) and it STILL didn't get warmer. Well, I figured it would be good for snuggling. At night, it got warmer. We weren't moving to pick up the motion sensor, so I don't know what was going on. The room had a safe, a refrigerator, a nice flat screen TV with channels, a regular bed and a sofa-bed. We just used the regular bed. The blackout blinds were nice, some of the top clips were off, so you had to work to get them to black out the light, which on this fall day was BLASTING IN. Quiet location - we heard one siren, and no people compensating for something revving their engines. Double sinks in the bathroom made it easy for us to both get ready to go. We liked it. Not sure where these complaints are coming from - we didn't have any problems.

The bathroom was missing some basic amenities such as a soap dish, so I had to leave the bar soap on the counter. The shower's strong water pressure was really nice compared to the flow-restricted showers commonly found in California hotels. The staff experience was mixed. The night reception gentleman (working Monday through Thursday) provided outstanding customer service for his consistently warm and energetic greetings every time I passed. The night valet Martin also deserves special recognition for his outstanding service, sprinting to retrieve my car and showing remarkable attention to detail by noticing my night work schedule and trying to proactively have my car ready. However, the daytime valet service was disappointing. Two valets would unnecessarily retrieve my car together (Maybe one was shadowing the other). During these retrievals, one valet would sit on my belongings in the passenger seat (this happened multiple days). I later discovered after leaving Milwaukee that she damaged my glasses. Given the short distance to the garage, this practice seems unnecessary and showed a lack of respect for guest property. If they noticed stuff on the seat, they could've just walked back. For future improvement, I would suggest better attention to guests' personal belongings and a review of valet procedures.
