I decided to eat a good breakfast while getting some major admin work done and went to Chicken Run. I ordered the Hiker's Benedict since I was specifically craving Eggs Benedict. But being neurosparkly has its challenges that show up in the weirdest ways. While I have a very open palate and can be a total foodie, I can get very weirded out by textures. So when my meal came with all of the toppings chopped up into small cubes, I simply couldn't enjoy it. The waitress asked about it, and I told her it's my own weirdness and not to worry about it. They still took the meal off even though I fully planned to pay. I don't share this so that people will abuse their kindness, but so that people will know that this is a business with heart. At a time when I'm feeling like especially sensitive about being too much, this little thing meant so much to me. I will absolutely return here. Thank you, Chicken Run - Lubbock. I can't even explain how good this place is, the kind of spot that makes you excited to tell everyone you know. The moment you walk in, the smell of fresh tortillas, melted cheese, and slow-cooked meat hits you, and you already know you're in for something amazing. I ordered the birria tacos, and wow... easily some of the best I've ever had. The meat was juicy and flavorful, the tortillas were perfectly crispy, and that consommé was rich and full of depth. Every bite had that perfect mix of crunch, spice, and comfort. The rice and beans on the side were just as delicious you can tell everything here is made with care. The staff was super friendly and made the whole experience even better. The atmosphere is fun and colorful upbeat music, great energy, and that welcoming family vibe you only get at real Mexican restaurants. We come here at least once a week and every time we go we are never disappointed. It's by far the best Mexican food in town. My favorite is camarones ala Diabla but there caldo and fajitas are also amazing. The waitresses are always so nice and helpful and it's always clean. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit.
