I hired Jeff for a major plumbing project at my home in Norridge. The project included: installing an ejector pump with two new area drains, supplying and installing all new copper hot/cold water lines (for kitchen, utility sink, water heater, laundry feeds), supplying and installing a new drain/overflow for the tub including a p-trap to new wye fitting at the main stack, fixing existing drains, excavating 25 feet of my rear yard to accommodate a new 4" PVC drain that terminates at a pop-up, descaling a cast iron sewer pipe; installing new Moen faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as a posi-temp kit for the tub; and more. I spent almost two months speaking with 8-10 plumbers and getting quotes. The estimate process was extensive because many of the plumbers were suggesting different solutions - and it got incredibly confusing, and sometimes frustrating. When it comes to my home - I want people to do the kind of work they would do for their own home. I don't want to cut corners. I don't want to skip out on permits, or approve something that isn't the best possible solution for the long term. Jeff earned the bid because he seemed to have the best understanding of what was needed to bring my home up to current codes - and to protect my home from future issues. Jeff was thorough and careful. He was able to smoothly manage the permit process, and be persistent with the Village about the required signatures and inspections to complete the project. I am also remote because I am taking care of my mom - communication is especially critical because I can't see things as clearly when I'm stopping by the house a couple days a month vs. being there every day! They replaced a wax seal on a Toto Neorest toilet. This is a little more complicated than a normal toilet but does not take much longer. I was surprised when the repairman said the charge is 495 for the job; it's not by the hour. I paid 200 last year for the seal on a Neorest in another bathroom; that plumber works for my general contractor but he was working out of town and Jose was already here and I gave the go ahead. He started the work then found a bolt that needed to be drilled out. Another $100. That annoyed me. This was to be by the job without mention of extra charges for minor problems. Jose was here an hour. $600 per man hour seems awfully expensive - understood that there is travel, insurance and equipment. Jeff is a nice guy and helped me trouble shoot over the phone, his men are good but his pricing is high. I don't like to negotiate and everyone has the right to set their price but I am not sure what I will do the next time I need some help. read more

If you have a difficult plumbing job, and I'm not talking about fixing a toilet, although I am sure they are great at small jobs too, this is the best plumbing company in Chicago. Bar none. I had ridiculous sewer issues in my house, persisting over several years, that no fewer than 4 previous plumbers looked at and failed to fix. One of those companies I am about to pursue in Court because I spent thousands of dollars on their "repairs" and they just made my problems worse, including leading to rodents entering my basement. I am so thankful that I was introduced to The Plumbing Dept through my exterminator. Never underestimate the value of a great referral. From day one, Jose and Ed were incredible. Jose took my problem almost personally. You could tell he was determined to solve it, no matter how much effort it took. It took the better part of a week, but solve it, they did. I no longer have the horrible sewer smell in my house, nor do I have rats lounging in my basement cabinetry. There was such an unbelievable contrast between the way the Plumbing Dept conducted itself and the bad plumber I had unfortunately used previously. The knowledge + expertise that they have to diagnose and correct the problem, and the way they communicate, the way they test their work repeatedly to make sure it's done correctly, and how you deal with the same 2 guys for your entire job rather than different crews, even the clean up was immaculate. The honesty, the integrity is just on another plane from competition. So I say to you- Hire the Plumbing Dept and do not think twice about it. If I could give these guys 40 stars I would do it. I reached out to Jeff regarding some water pressure issues at my house in Wicker Park. He replied quickly and we scheduled a time to review the issue in person. After evaluating water pressure loss at various fixtures he determined that the issue was most likely the valve at the main inlet to my home or one of the valves from the city at curbside. He changed the valve at the main inlet and determined it wasn't completely open. We don't know 100% that this is the issue, but we have to start somewhere. There was no charge despite Jeff spending 20 - 30 minutes troubleshooting our issue, which I very much appreciated. It's nearly impossible to find servicemen now a days who don't try to rip you off, especially here in the city. However, if you have any plumbing needs - Jeff is your guy! We called on a Saturday morning when I noticed it started raining in our kitchen while my husband was in the shower - water was dripping right through the ceiling. I asked Jeff if he could come out on Monday and he was here by 10am Monday morning. After he inspected the shower a little, he told me that it in fact wasn't a plumbing issue at all - however it was an issue with the tile in our bathroom as water was pooling on the tile and the seams had opened up. He told me to call a tile guy to regrout the tile, in addition to calling a shower door guy to make sure no more water would leak out of the shower. After making sure I understood, Jeff began his way out the door as I asked him what I owed him for his visit - and he told me absolutely nothing! Unheard of... He was extremely professional and knew exactly what he was talking about. He could have easily ripped open our ceiling to manufacture some plumbing costs but instead charged me nothing and gave me next steps to fix our problem. This is a 2-part review. I agree with all the reviews as to professionalism, response, etc. Jeff did some valve work for me a couple of years ago and it was fine - expensive but fine. And, all the positive attributes were present. 2 weeks ago I asked for a quote to hook up my new sink, which is 2 inches deeper than the previous. I sent the schema for the new sink, a diagram of present hookup, measurements and pics of all. Folks, I got an $850 quote! $850 is exorbitant for this work, plus a time quote of 1/2 day. I got several other quotes, around $250 + 1 hour. I wrote Jeff to make sure that he was clear on the work required, given that his quote was 3x more than others. In the end I got the work done for $250 + 1 hour. In my experience, I get overpriced quotes due to several factors including my gender and my zip code. But, this quote was ridiculous. While I agree as stated above that there are many positives, I certainly was not willing to spend almost $1K to have fairly standard and frankly, work I could have done myself if I'd had time, done. Just be aware and if the positives are worth spending 3x at a premium, then terrific. read more

Jeff and team were nothing short of phenomenal! After the 2019 Polar Vortex in Chicago, our condo association experienced a burst pipe at 8:30 am on a Saturday morning. Jeff was upfront about scope of work and cost when I explained the issue. They were very quick in locating the burst pipe, and although they had to cut into our wall, they displayed great care in making the least impact possible. The entire scope of work entailed finding the burst pipe, cutting into drywall, removing and replacing the pipe, and testing water pressure and water temperature prior to their departure. They also cleaned up debris generated from the project. This team is courteous, friendly, and professional. I've worked with Jeff before when he worked for another plumbing company. He did great work then and he does excellent work now on his own. My sump pump gave out in the spring when all the snow we had suddenly melted. This flooded my basement and while I was able to pump out the water myself I didn't know what I was going to do to get the pump replaced. I have an elderly parent at home and the pandemic was still in full force. In a pinch I called Jeff as I remembered how respectful and courteous he was from our past experience and he personally came out on the next business day. We felt comfortable allowing him inside and he respectfully wore a mask without us asking. He replaced our sump pump with a similar model of the same brand and explained why the pump failed and what he would need to do to replace the pump properly. He completed the work in a few hours and there were no issues with the install. It's been nearly half a year and I am happy to report that the pump has been working fine. Jeff is a life saver! In February, we used this company to replace a hot water heater. Their pricing was very competitive, customer service attentive and response time very reasonable. We are in the process of selling our condo and yesterday the buyer had their inspection. During the inspection they noticed a small draining issue from my air conditioner that is unrelated to the recently replaced hot water heater. I called The Plumbing Department immediately, explained the situation and they had Al over to my unit within 90 minutes. Shortly thereafter the owner, Jeff, called me and explained the issue and the course of action. As planned, the issue was fixed by the following morning (a Saturday morning over Memorial Day weekend, nonetheless) by Jeff himself. Not surprised one bit to see all the rave reviews here. A few years ago, I was driving my kids home from school, where a plumbing emergency was waiting for me when I got home. I can't remember what the problem was since we had so many plumbing issues (125-year-old house). At a stoplight on Ashland, I pulled up behind a plumbing company truck and called their number out of desperation. Probably the first time I'd ever called up a contractor without obsessively reading reviews on Angie's List, Yelp etc. But we had tried several plumbing companies over the years with mixed results, so I figured why not. Very luckily for me, the truck belonged to The Plumbing Department. Since we were so close to my house, Jeff stopped by right then and did the repair. His work was excellent and he's super professional and friendly, so from that point on, we've only used the Plumbing Department. Last year we moved into a new construction house. The builder's plumbing company could have done the work for free since the house was under warranty, but we ended up working with the Plumbing Department anyway. You just can't go back after working with these guys. For example, there was a problem with one of the toilet handles during our inspection. It wouldn't flush. The builder's plumber wanted to replace it with a handle that didn't really match the rest of the bathroom hardware. They said it was the best that could be done if we wanted a functional toilet. And it still didn't even flush all that well. The Plumbing Department came out right away, was able to track down a perfect match for us, problem solved. They're just soooo easy to work with. I only wish I could find other tradespeople and contractors who are this reliable. Highly recommend!! read more

After a very frigid Sunday night, we found that we had no hot water on Monday morning. Turns out, the water froze in the tankless water heater and busted the pipes. I called The Plumbing Department and after explaining what happened, Danielle set me up with an appointment for Tuesday morning and promised that Jeff would call me back. Jeff called back and after listening to my story, he explained that my only option would be to replace the broken the system, which did not come as a total shock. Jeff took the time to answer my questions and give me a estimate. Jose and Al called about 20 minutes before arriving Tuesday morning as promised. Both were very polite, friendly, clean, and neat. Even though there were a couple tricky parts to the installation, I did not pay more than what Jeff and I agreed on. Found The Plumbing Dept on Angies List after my regular plumbers told me I would have to wait several days (over the New Years weekend) before they could send someone to look at a leaking toilet. Jose came out the next day (on time), diagnosed the problem right away (leaking gasket), quoted the price, and got to work. He not only did a fine job with the repair, he also discovered an icy buildup in the copper pipe that led from the toilet (due to icy cold weather and poorly heated common area in condo building where pipe led) and had to clear that with many many pots of hot water, and then, on top of everything, he noticed that my flapper was pretty worn out so he replaced that!! On May 1, after several days of heavy rain, my 100+ year old dry(?) basement flooded with 3-4 inches of water. My son-in-law recommended The Plumbing Department Inc. Two very nice plumbers, Jeff and Jose, arrived quickly and on time. They reported good news, the sump pump was working and bad news, tree roots were blocking the sewer line. They augered and drained the basement and (based on my info) installed a second cleanout near the front of the house to lengthen viewable/augerable pipe all the way to the city main line. The water heater had been flooded out but Jeff saved it by directing a fan overnight. They cleaned up and removed their debris. These plumbers are knowledgeable, efficient and honest, no pitch to sell me a new water heater or sump pump. Jeff, the owner, worked side by side with his team every visit. Everyone followed Covid-19 safety practices. I was reminded to write my Yelp today by the very heavy storms yesterday through this morning. Yippee! My basement is dry!
