    Mermaid Water

    Mermaid Water

Adam came by the house today to see what was causing our well water system to not operate…read morecorrectly. He checked the system out and it appears that a check valve and part of the pressure switch had gone bad. He replaced the parts and got us back up and running. Mermaid always gives 110% when it comes to taking care of their clients. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone that has water system needs. Thank you to all involved. Ritchie

I live in College Park, and I knew that my water (municipal water) was leaving gross scale on our…read morebathroom fixtures and was therefore hard water. I also noticed that our water smelled very heavily of chlorine. I wanted to hire a company to soften our water and install a reverse osmosis drinking water system, but I honestly didn't know where to start. Something like 20 years ago in a different state we had purchased a Culligan water softener system, so I started my quest to look into water softener companies by calling Culligan. I am a member of Costco, so I also called Costco's water treatment folks, who happen to be Carroll Water in my area (who sell EcoWater systems). Both the Culligan and the Carroll Water systems seemed nearly identical; both use electricity, have electric timers for their salt water washes that you have to pre-set and worry about re-setting if the electricity goes out, are rather large systems, etc. One was a bit more expensive than the other (it actually annoyed me to no end that EcoWater/Carroll Water/Costco have some kind of buy-a-water-system-get-a-HUGE-Costco-gift-card thing going on...just seems way too gimmicky). My father, an engineer with tons of patents, lives in another state and had purchased a Kinetico water softener system and loved it. He told me I really needed to try to find a Kinetico dealer in my area so I could take a look at them, also. So I found Mermaid Water. I was impressed that their system didn't use electricity and that the salt water backwash system kicked in because of usage and not because of electric programming. To me, this seemed much more efficient than having a system that just always backwashed on Sundays at 3 am or whatever. The Mermaid Water representative who came to my house initially (Ed Owens) was also very flexible about the installation process - far FAR more than the Culligan or Carroll Water folks. I also LOVED that the Kinetico system was so much smaller and had such a smaller footprint than the Culligan or EcoWater systems, for we were limited on space. Even though Kinetico/Mermaid was a bit more expensive than Culligan and Carroll Water, I chose them. I'm very glad I did, but I didn't really understand why until after I had the installation team come in with our new equipment. The Kinetico installation team was absolutely amazing. Truly. Brad King, the son of the owner, did the install, and he is absolutely a master plumber. No one could have done a better job. He came into my house, created phenomenal ways to get the job done while minimizing the footprint of the machines and maximizing the benefit to my house - I am so grateful to him. And as he did the install, I asked him a thousand questions and he was SO patient and answered them all. And it was during this time that I became much more educated about the equipment and so grateful that I had chosen to purchase it rather than anything else. For example, I watched while Brad set the clockwork discs/gears that tick down to when the softener enters a backwash cycle. Basically what happens is that as you use water, the machine slowly ticks down via a small clocklike gear until it's time to start a backwash cycle. Then one part of the machine backwashes while the other is still filtering your water. The cool thing is that the Kinetico equipment actually backwashes itself with treated water (the others don't), which lengthens the life of your equipment. And since only one side of the water softener (there are two sides - basically two water softener units that sit side by side) regenerates/backwashes at a time, the other side is always still filtering your water. Whereas with Culligan or EcoWater, their machines don't do this - the whole setup backwashes all at one time, leaving untreated water coming into your house. Also, because usage is measured via a mechanical clockwork gear and not an electrical panel in the Kinetico systems, there are less electrical parts that can fail in the future, and you don't need an electrical outlet nearby to plug the machines into (which made me happy - I didn't have to get an electrician out to run wiring for a new plug). The Kinetico system typically backwashes more frequently than the other systems, since it backwashes based on usage, leaving me to surmise that you could absolutely be put in a position with units that only do this based on timers where your system is gunky and needs to backwash but hasn't yet done so because the timer hasn't told it to. And the Kinetico system uses far, FAR less salt during backwashes, thus FAR less salt overall. I would much rather have equipment that backwashes when it knows it needs to based on its own usage than a system that backwashes once a week based on a timer. Their reverse osmosis system is also stellar; it has powerful water pressure - much better than other RO systems. We are THRILLED with our Kinetico equipment and THRILLED with Mermaid Water! The best brand of equipment out there.

Plumb Perfect Plumbing - Installation of garbage disposal and kitchen drain

We've lived in the area nearly 40 years and quite honestly had terrible experiences with many of the areas plumbing companies. That has never been the case with Plumb Perfect Plumbing. I removed the old one, and had the new one unpacked and all ready to go, I just needed the technician to install it. Before getting here I told the tech he would only have 15 minutes to do the install as I had an appt. that I had to get to. He assured me he thought he could do it. The new one was the same manufacturer, so it was a simple case of pretty much twisting the new one in. He did use some putty and replaced a small PVC pipe which he didn't really need to. Anyway, he did the install within 15-20 minutes. He gave me the estimate, which I thought was rather high, but with the sink torn up I was in no position to stop everything and try to get another plumber out and to see what everyone else was charging. He did give me a $75 discount because I had done some of the work. The total for 15-20 minutes was originally $437-$75=$362.00. I think this is an outrageous amount to charge, it was an easy install. I sent an email to the owner, and of course go no response. So, I called and spoke to the service manager. His reasoning was $437 was expensive, but it covers tech training, vehicles, insurance, office expenses etc. I have no problem with a business making a profit but this is an exorbitant amount to charge for 15-20 minutes of work. Apparently, they have Flat Fees for jobs, but won't give even a hint as to what these are over the phone, so you are in the dark until they arrive at your home, and in an emergency you certainly aren't going to send the tech away. So, while the tech was very nice, and apparently did a fine job this place is very, very expensive.

Juniors's seemed to receive good reviews. But if you call this number now for Junior's Plumbing,…read more540-412-8245, they will answer, "Precision Plumbing, formerly Junior's." And I deeply regret calling them. The week before Thanksgiving, I requested service on 3 toilets in my home to have the tank parts replaced. I was having family coming and wanted the work completed before they arrived. They sent Michael to my home. He provided a quote just under $1,300 for the repair, advising that there could possibly be damage if I chose to go this way, and they would not be responsible if that happened. He provided a quote of $$2,250 to replace all 3 toilets with an American Standard model, and said there would not be any damage. He said he could do it that day, so I reluctantly agreed to have them replaced. He said it would take 3 hours. His only business in my basement storage room was to turn off the main water valve. However, I should have paid more attention to his whereabouts. I thought it odd that he carried out a white canvas bag that appeared stuffed with something, and I wish I had stopped him to ask what was in the bag. I also wish I had gone into the basement and checked to see if anything was missing before he left. I thought it odd that he didn't depart after he finished working. Another Precision Plumbing van pulled up and parked in front of my house. I now wish I had gone outside. At a later date, I went down to the basement to get Christmas decorations and discovered many, many items, were missing from the storage room where the water main is located. I was very upset about this and called Precision Plumbing and left a voicemail for someone to call me. Candace, the former owner's sister now runs the company. She called me back and said she spoke with Michael and he denied taking the items and also denied there was another company vehicle at my home that night. However, after checking GPS, she confirmed with me that there was another company van at my home, just as I saw and described. I reported the theft to the county sheriff's office. They prepared a report and recommended I install cameras to watch service providers. I'm letting people know they should not be shy about watching over people working in their home. I advise having additional people on hand to watch with you. It's getting to where people know they can take from others and get away with it. I would not recommend using this company for this reason.

I honestly would have gone with them right after the presentation but I was told to look around a bit for other companies. I did...and I was unimpressed. The next company did a 23 minute "presentation" and quoted me double the price of VA Environmental Resources. I nodded and smiled and escorted him out of my house...Then promptly called Joshua and informed him I'd like to move forward with his services. The installation was scheduled for the following week. I was told the water may be off for 4 hours, but it was only off for 2. The gentlemen who showed up for the install were on time, efficient, and cleaned up after themselves. Joshua returned a week later to conduct a walk-through with me and show me how the machine worked and encouraged me to use the 24-hour phone number if anything happened and I needed them. I no longer have to use bottled water to fill my dogs' bowls, my skin feels better out of the shower, and I'm already using significantly less soap than before. I highly recommend this company and Joshua and April were amazing!
