So as a regular customer in the later evening onna Tuesday night... gather with friends after dart league play for a couple beverages, and commaraderie after a competitive league competition. Upon entering the establishment shortly after 12am, I had to excuse myself to get past two patrons loitering on the front door steps inhibiting the entrance to get in. "Excuse me I said ", the one gentleman stepped aside saying sorry, no worries I replied to him. Apparently when I opened the door to enter my backpack brushed the other gentleman in the chest. Didn't actually realize until I was through the entrance, looked back as he was clearly overreacting to the incidental contact upon myself entering. I entered the restaurant, dropped my knapsack and went back to apologize to the gentleman. Words were specifically, " sorry my backpack bumped you went i entered, i think you kind of overreacted. " The other gentleman who actually moved when i excused myself passing them, got all indignant, belligerent, and agitated followed me into the restaurant looking for a confrontation. I actually unaware of this as it was unfolding was caughg off guard as my friends intervened what was going to be a physical altercation. It was actually, said gentleman was physical with my friend who was having my back, continued to be aggressivd. Taunted me, still being aggressive...upon which time the bar staff asked 'ME' to leave... are you kidding me i said, I'm not the person loitering on the front step, blocking patron and then getting aggressive abd starting an altercation. Not at all pleased with how the staff dealt with this. Total bs. I've been attending the Poacher establishment for close to 40 years. They just lost a huge amount of respect in my eyes. I will be sharing this incident with many friends and potential customers. Discouraging supporting this establishment. Not happy one little bit. read more

I was out for a Friday night...place had a bit of a line outside...people in front of me were two women...both denied of access because one of them was African American. The bouncer made it very clear that this was about race, and it became very clear and obvious to many in the line what was going on. Two young women approximately early 30s MAYBE late 20s...he was speaking to these women with aggression and absolute disgust....not a good look for the place employing white trash like that. Best I can describe the way this guy looks is a Wal mart version of Dave Grohl with a backwards baseball cap. I wish I stepped up at the time, but didn't want to create a scene. Feel like a coward now for these women. :( read more

I will give it a solid 4. For the British authenticity and cheerfulness of the staff. Had steak & kidney pie with mushy peas and mashed potatoes. Friends had wings and club sandwich. All good, including the cask ale. Why go to a mundane chain pub when there are places like this ? Thank you Yelp, would not have found The Poacher otherwise. read more

My late husband and I frequented this pub 17 years before he passed on. Together we could never say enough wonderful things about the quaintness of the pub, the friendly staff, the great beer and the fantastic Liver dinner as well as the beef dip, onion soup and so much more. Over the years we have brought many friends from England, Scotland and everybody has been impressed. I would recommend this pub to anybody who wants to enjoy themselves, have a great meal, great atmosphere and the price is right. Lots and lots of variety. Great beer on tap as my husband always said. First off I should start by talking abooot the stereotypes we as Americans have towards Canadians eh. Not everyone in Canada has a Mullet, I know I was surprised. Not everyone in Canada is a hockey fan, some are curling fans! Lastly Canada does not have crappy food....well French Canada does, I don't get the poutine thing....sorry. Turns out Ontario Canada has a ton of great food and a HUGE variety of ethnic restaurants, cafes, and pubs. I was recently in Burlington, ON for work and was working near a place called The Poacher. One of the guys I was working with suggested it for a late snack. I had their home made cream of tomato soup and some bread. It was delicious, I also had an Ice cold Stella artois which as always was great. The next day I told the two guys I was working with I would treat to lunch so we ended up back at...you guessed it........ the Poacher. Again we were met with great service and I felt like I had been going there forever. I got a roast beef and Cheddar melt and it was delicious. I'm from the north shore and its hard to get ANYTHING roast beef and not be a snob about it. I think "beef three way" were my first words! Anyway this wrap had some of the best roast beef I have had in years and the sauce was delicious, like a tangy BBQ. Lastly, if you are into single malt whisky than the Poacher will certainly not disappoint, they have a HUGE selection of top shelf single malts. The Poacher is great and if you ever find yourself in Burlington Ontario you have to go there and get lunch and a beer. Dont worry Lake Ontario is right across the street, you can walk it off after! It was solid. It was just like a pub in Europe - not handicapped accessible (that I could see), lots of beer on tap with the various mugs, and bar food. By bar food, I don't mean crappy wing dings and soggy chips straight from Gordon Foods, but delicious open faced steak sandwiches with thick cut fries style bar food. 2 dollar signs is about right, just remember everything in Canada is expensive. read more

If you are in Burlington this is in my opinion the best bar there is. From the amazing staff who are always the best, to the amazing selection of music in both jukeboxes (upstairs and down), the selection of booze on hand and even snacks and let's not forget about the patio. The atmosphere is something every bar should aspire to. I dare you not to have a great time here. read more

The Poacher is a great classic English pub. The decor is very authentic, there are a lot of food options, and the staff is always friendly. This place has been in Burlington long enough that it's got its fair share of regulars, especially if you're stopping by late at night for a couple pints. There's also a basement with two billiards tables and darts upstairs. They have a jukebox that's got a good selection of albums in a variety of genres. It's in a great location downtown, just a couple minute's walk from the lake and they have a lovely, big patio that's perfect in the summer. read more

Nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. The steak and kidney pie was too salty for my taste. Some of the fries were overcooked and the rest were under-cooked. They had the nerve to charge 50 cents for a small container of mayo for my fries. They don't charge extra for ketchup. Our waitress was very good. read more

Great pub food! Tip: Steak and Kidney Pie, but get the chips and mushy peas instead of the normal sides. You won't be sorry. Good food and drinks. Just what you'd expect when walking into an "olde English pub." Relaxed atmosphere, nothing fancy, but the service was great and French onion soup was delicious. Had some deep fried pickles with parmesan dip which were yummy too! All in all, it satisfied our afternoon thirst and hunger. read more

Best little gem in burlington, want a good place that is exactly like Cheers than you found the right place. Everyone is so friendly and services is great, only time that is crazy is near last call. Two floors with bar basement has pool tables and "games room " as you will. Dart and pool league is also at this bar. With the amount of unwarranted disrespect I was treated with, I would never, ever go back. I made a complaint to be passed along to management and hope the issue has been rectified. read more
