I am from a small town in North Georgia and we are always getting rave reviews about our BBQ. We eat it at-least once a week!! In my travels across the state I look for a couple types of food, Chili Dogs and BBQ. Frankly I've been a bit disappointed as of late. Coming into Anderson today I wasn't sure what to expect food wise. I've seen the sign for the The Pompous Pig as I passed before. Today was the day I gave it a shot! I ordered the 1/2lb pulled pork plate with mac n cheese and sweet potato casserole. The pork definitely had that smoked flavor while being juicy, plenty of smoke ring, and goodness it was delicious! The Mac is the old school egg custard base type that Mom made for me growing up! It was delicious as well! I'm usually reluctant to order any sweet potato dish, but I decided to take a chance today. It was delicious without being too sweet, smooth without lots of chunks, and AGAIN...delicious! Thank y'all for my lunch! I look forward to coming back here the next time I'm in town! read more

Came to Pompous Pig on a Saturday night with a big party (~35 people). They did a great job handling our group! This fact alone is what gives them the 3 stars in my book. Food came out quickly and service was prompt! To a critical eye, this place is a 2.5. I had pulled pork plate, collards, okra, with cornbread. I also tried their Brunswick stew. The portions were solid, however I paid nearly $18 for my meal ( I had water to drink which was .25 and I tipped). The pork was fine, sauces were exciting (there were 4-5 on the table), okra was good. The collards were not chopped and kind of sweet, not what I'm use to but I made a hoppin John sort of situation with my cornbread afterwards that was stellar. The stew was not to my liking AT ALL. It was watered down, lacked in any smokey/meaty flavor and the tomato acidity was overwhelming. The real disappointment was when I went to the bathroom. There is only one and it was pretty sub par. Next to the restroom there was a rack of huge Sysco cans of veggies. I have to admit that it seriously turned me off. We all know that institutional food is a part of our reality but no body wants to see that nearly every veggie you use is straight from a can. To recap, average food ( except for the stew), disappointing value proposition and disappointing behind the scenes stuff, but great service and very accommodating for large groups! read more

Wow! Everything was so good. The chicken was nicely smoked, flavorful and very juicy. The fried okra was outstanding, bust I've ever had. They must hand cut and bread fresh okra right here in house? Good brisket, collard greens were pretty good but got way better when I splashed some of their vinegar sauce on top! The cornbread, what usually seems to be an afterthought at most BBQ spots this one was outstanding! I meant to ask for butter but as it turned out it did not need anything else on it. Moist, buttery and delicious! Every single person that works here was genuinely nice, not that nice because it's my job nice. This is solid barbecue! My wife and I visited on a weekday at lunch and we were lucky enough not to have to wait. She had a pulled pork sandwich and I had a combo brisket and chopped pork plate. Mac n Cheese was also very good (clearly made from scratch). This was our first visit but is now definitely on our list of places to go. The location was clean, bright, and the staff was friendly. Nice music too. Side note: not important to most people but I really appreciate when establishments have a soda button on their fountain machine. The Pompous Pig is bursting with quality menu items and character. The fantastic customer service is just what every customer wants. (fast, friendly, great food). Location: This fine restaurant is located conveniently off Interstate 85 only about 20 miles into South Carolina coming from Georgia. You then drive about a couple miles and its on the left hidden from direct view from road. There's a big yellow sign that informs people that a BBQ restaurant is in this area. Pull in and drive to the back and it's located on the left. Advertising: I saw a billboard sign advertising this restaurant out on the Interstate about 2 hours North East of Atlanta. So I looked it up on Yelp and book marked it because I wanted to try a new Bar B Q and what better than a BBQ from South Carolina. menu items ordered: Bar B Q pork sandwich on a hamburger bun, slaw on the side, French fries, and a coke. This bar b q was great as I wished there was one close by where I live. There was just the right amount of pulled pork. The Unique Pompous BBQ sauces: Now it is the simple truth: this restaurant has up 6 or 7 sauces to choose from depending on what table you decide to sit at. The sauces to choose from are; sweet, regular, mustard and vinegar. These were the only sauces available at my table. However, I saw later that they have hot BBQ, Hot vinegar, and Alabama White. I tasted 3 of these sauces all of which were great. I really personally liked the sweet BBQ. Next best was the regular. The vinegar was ok but I had to "top it off" with sweet sauce. Final thoughts and happenings: Well they have reasonable prices on all their food no matter what you get. The chef or owner actually came out and talked to me. He knew I was a tourists and recommended some places for me to see. While I did not get around to seeing his recommends, it is the thought that counts. Menu standouts; from looking at the pictures, the sausage plate that comes with turnip greens looked mouthwatering. If I had to come here a second time, I would definitely get that. All of the reviews are correct - this is likely the best BBQ in SC! I ordered the pulled pork plate with broccoli raisin salad, fried okra and yellow cornbread, which also comes with a sweet little sample of slaw. The pulled pork literally melted in my mouth, and the cornbread was so moist and sweet. Everything else was equally delicious. I just savored that meal and barely touched my tea! My hub tried the brisket with collards, baked beans and Texas toast. The brisket was so tender he didn't need a knife to cut it, and the baked beans were sweet and savory made with with bits of onion and pepper. I won't touch collards, but hub said they were "just like home". And even though you walk in and order at the counter, they do bring your plates out and also come by regularly to see if you need anything else. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Their prices are higher (probably 30%) than Henry's in Greenville, but it's worth it to try the very best. read more

I was really craving brisket so I stopped in on a Wed as other BBQ places were closed. Only had chopped brisket available. I had 1/2lb brisket sandwich and it was dry. I needed to bathe it in sauce to be decent. Mac and cheese was pretty good. I won't get brisket here again. read more

OMG! Best BBQ restaurant in Anderson, SC! This place is so much better than a lot of the big BBQ food chains. My brisket was cooked perfectly. The ribs are to die for and the sides were the right amount. Their sweet potato casserole is really good. The owners are really nice too. Every time we go there, we always buy their rubs and BBQ sauce. You can also order their sauce online. I believe they cater too. You can't go wrong with this establishment. This is a wonderful barbecue restaurant. I usually eat here once a week and today I met the owner. His name is Chet. This place has the absolute best baked beans of any restaurant I've ever eaten at. I am from Memphis originally and we had a multitude of barbecue restaurant available. The Pompous Pig is as good as any I have had. We wanted good BBQ, so we found the Pompous Pig with good reviews. I paid 30 dollars for a two meat combo, the brisket and ribs, a drink, and an extra cornbread. It was a long wait, the people who arrived after me got their food before us. When I went to see where my food was, I saw a table called the waitress over and told her they had found something in her food. I couldn't tell what it was, but after the waitress came back from the kitchen, she told them it shouldn't have been in her food and offered to comp their entire meal. When I finally got my food, the entire meal was cold, the mac n cheese was not seasoned at all, and the corn bread was dry. Disappointed I just left trying to eat eating this bad meal. If you go to the front to ask questions, they see you and ignore you. All in all, this is no more than an NO STAR restaurant. You have to put something. read more

Great little BBQ place which serves up very generous portions of delicious food. Pulled pork sandwiches were nicely grilled buns stuffed to overflow with tasty pork. A small side of coleslaw comes with the sandwich along with a choice of side. Highly recommend the broccoli apple salad with raisins and almonds. Wow! What an amazing place! We are from Texas and are of course in love with BBQ...but this place will give Texas a run for its money. We tried just about everything. The dry rub ribs are the best we have EVER had!! The pulled pork was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. Nothing beats true Carolina pulled pork! The brisket was so moist and flavorful we fell in love! Now for the sides...amazing Mac n cheese, green beans are to die for!, slaw was so fresh, broccoli apple salad had so much flavor, the sweet potato mash was wonderful and so was the mashed potato bake. Bland. The ribs, slaw, fried okra, and even the corn bread lacked flavor. I am not referring to heat. I am referring to spices and basic salt and pepper. The exterior layer of the ribs had good taste but the flavor did not penetrate into the meat. The smoke also did not penetrate into the meat. I will be less picky on tenderness as long as the ribs arent dry since most restaurants cannot replicate the process used at bbq competitions. However if the ribs are also lacking flavor and there is limited smoke penetration it is a big disappointment. Even the breading used for the okra was bland! read more

My fries were hot and really crispy. It's a fast casual concept, so you order at the counter and then take a seat --- they bring the food out. The food looked pretty good all around. So we ride past Anderson a lot we are truckers we have noticed this place and have wanted to go here for about 6 month and finally came through while they were open. I wish we had kept driving. The brisket had an odd taste. It was like it was reheated or something the potato salad was dry an looked like it just had mustard in it. Just not worth the stop in our opinion. I am a serious critic of smoked chicken and have eaten it all over SC, NC, and GA. Most of the time it is dry and tough. But, not tonight. Oh, my goodness was this the BEST chicken I have ever had, with the possible exception of some I had out in west Texas 25 years ago. Point is, this was sooo good! The smoked pork was solid, fried okra was on point, mac and cheese delivered, and the sweet potato fries were money. And, the beer I had while waiting was cold and delicious. Good BBQ... I always say that BBQ preference is a personal thing. Given that, there are a few objective things that I can say. The pulled pork was lean meat, well cooked, not very smokey, not very spicy. I that appeals to you, then you are in for a treat. I prefer more smoke and more rub on the pork. It was not as juicy as I like - a bit dry - but not bad. It absorbed the sauce well... No serious complaints from me. Sauces - they have four - that is a plus... The regular is great in my opinion - red sauce good flavor - not hot. (My favorite) There is a sweet sauce with lots of hickory smoke flavor - also good. The NC vinegar base sauce was not as flavorful as I prefer, but again this is a very subjective thing, nothing wrong here. The mustard based SC style sauce was rather plain. If you like to taste the mustard, you are in for a pleasurable experience. If you like it spicy, well... The pork covered in the regular sauce was a treat for me... I tried their beans - spicy - not too much, but some bite. I like that. I also had their potato salad, which was mustard based and good. They serve some great cornbread. Excellent.... Pompous Pig is always my go-to BBQ place when I'm in town. The best brisket quesadilla I've had.

I live in California and travel to Clemson once or twice a year for football/basketball games. We normally drive from Atlanta and through Anderson, and after several years I finally stumbled upon The Pompous Pig the day before going to Clemson-Georgia Tech. The restaurant is off the beaten path (speaking of the interstate) and I'm guessing because it's not a chain doesn't have money to promote as heavily as some Southern competitors so it is often overlooked. But, don't let that spook you. The Pompous Pig can rival most of the great Southern BBQ chains- and I've been to them all. This place isn't fancy, but when looking for a quick, inexpensive BBQ lunch or dinner you won't be disappointed. We order far more than we could handle, but choose to do so simply to compare it to what we had eaten in previous days (sorry Rib Country, you don't compare). I chose the pork and brisket with cornbread, sweet potato casserole and stewed okra and tomatoes. No, I wasn't able to finish it, but all of it was incredible. There was zero fat on the brisket and it was so tender it literally melted in your mouth. My buddy had the ribs and chicken and to this day swears it's the best he's ever had (and before you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, I've been to every BBQ spot on the Travel Channel top 10). The service here is good and they staff goes out of their way to make sure you are satisfied. I bought 30 bottles of BBQ sauce and had them shipped back to CA and will return here next time I put on my orange and watch Clemson.
