Fantastic night. The food was superb (even if we did order enough for a small army) and the atmosphere was gorgeous. It's happened a few times to me now that I've ended up in the Porter House pub when I should be in the Port House and vice versa. I have trouble with directions as it is and some bright sparks decided to put two places with absurdly similar names within five minutes walking distance of one another. My issues with the name aside, I think the Port House is great. The Tapas are gorgeous (try the calimari) and they do good wine at competitive prices. The atmosphere and decor are great, really intimate. The only downside is this leads to very little space. Which is a pain for someone who is 6'3 and inhumanly clumsy. read more

Nom. Nom. Nom. I've racked my brains for a more accurate review of this brilliant little spot, and that's all I can come up with. The food is beautifully presented and cooked to tasty perfection. Deep fried aubergene and goast cheese sandwich and the fois gras burger are particular favourites, followed at all times by churros, and washed down by a giant jug of sangria. Said sangria is always helpful when you are waiting to be seated, as there is invariably a wait to get a table here. The wait is always worth it however. The Port House is simply; cosy, intimate, candlelit, bliss. read more

The medieval cave feel to it with the lighted candles really makes it an excellent spot for an intimate date or a good catch up with a friend. I got the Spanish meat platter which was delicious and full of variety. For dessert I had the Portuguese custard pies, nicely sweet, perfect portions and went excellently with my coffee. I found the service attentive. I found the tables rather close but that comes in use when you run out of things to say and get to over hear divorce proceedings. read more

This place is SO ROMANTIC!!! I came here with a work colleague and it felt almost too intimate because it was so cosy and beautifully lit. It's really small, but in the best way possible. I wanted everything vegetarian off the menu. EVERYTHING. It was so difficult to choose what I wanted, but the beauty with tapas is that you can get several and not feel guilty! Sometimes things happen and you don't know that they've actually happened for a reason. But then, you think back and realize what you've lived. Conclusion : LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL ! The place was called The Port House... One star for the Spot ! Do you remember the Dublin City Soul Festival organized by Chris Maher and his amazing team ? Well, I do. I've heard of them through Facebook and bumped into Chris on the page for the festival. There was a contest. One had to post the poster of the festival as profile picture and would eventually win something. I had the great surprise and pleasure to win a voucher for The Port House. I say "surprise" because I usually never win anything, and I think I'm unfortunately getting used to it XD I called a friend of mine and we went to The Port House for a treat. The outside looked crowded but the entrance dark. Once in, your eyes need some time to get used to the darkness. Got myself wondering if we would see the food in our plate or just guess it... It didn't take me long to see candles all over the place and just candle. Sooooooo romantic, isn't it ? :) One star for the Ambiance ! The place was crowded inside out, mostly with groups of girls. I've read in some girly magasine that candle light gives a little "je-ne-sais-quoi", a glow that some other lighting don't. That's maybe why girls like this place !? Love the idea though :D I said to my friend : "Does the candle light give me a glow ?" He responded : "What the hell ?" I said : "You are such an insensitive... man ! Fine, let's order". The waiters are very nice and quite fast. The turnover was huge that night ! Two stars for the food ! When the food arrived, I was starving. Looking at other people eat what looked like tasty food made me salivate with... hunger ? Frustration ? I couldn't say. What I could say is that my friend became like a hunter, eyes light up when a waiter would come around and a grin on his face when the plates would go to some neighbouring tables. Once a waiter even put the plates on our table, though it wasn't our order. I think at that point my point we would have eaten the dish anyway if the waiter hadn't realized his mistake ;) Every single bite was delicious ! On top of that, there was plenty to eat. I could have left something in my plate, I could have... But I didn't. For food sake XD One final star for the Treat ! Went here on a lovely sunny summery Saturday evening and the restaurant instantly added to the holiday feel. There was a nice crowd of people, nothing too busy as it was relatively early. Absolutely loved the decor inside, some might say a bit too dark but I thought the candlelight just added to the rustic charm. Food wise, I had the aubergine and goats cheese sandwich in batter (Berenjena con queso de cabra rebozada). Loved the idea of it but for me it was slightly too salty. For the main, I chose the Galician mussels on with tomato sauce and Mahon cheese and they were very tasty. Despite the pick and mix options we had on the table, I definitely made the right choice (and thankfully, none of party were fans of mussels). As for the wine list, I went for a glass of white wine from Cataluña. It was so good that even my highly insensitive palate could taste the coconut flavour. Enter with a healthy appetite as the small-plate portions are quite generous! The prices are great and the ambiance is really nice and warm. It certainly gives you the feeling that you're in Spain! Recommendations: Cheesy Ham (Jamon) Croquettes are a must! Seafood (Mariscos) Paella is very nice. Spinach with Goat Cheese and Honey Salad (Ensalada) is delicious! And, the wine list is lovely as well. There are a couple spaces to eat; but, I prefer the street-level area as it feels like you're in a wine cave. There is a nice little semi-private nook for a small group of friends in the 'cave' and there are a couple romantic tables for two overlooking the street which seem very nice. Finally, on a 'fine day' (what's that?) grab a cafe table on the sidewalk and enjoy some sangria. Salud! read more

Yumyum and yum. Again I'm on about Tapas, in all my visits to the Port House and there have been many I have never been disappointed with the food here. They regularly update the menus, with a few staples that are always good (Chorizo al Vino is addictive as is their Gambas pil pil). The service is quick, and has gotten quicker without feeling rushed. Other food choices range from comfort tastes such as the Lamb Stew through to the ridiculously decadent Ferraro Roche cheesecake. There is pretty much something for everyone's taste. The space itself is really cool, dark and cave like in the ground floor and the first floor is a slightly more modern version. Their staff picks on the wine menu I have gone with a number of times and the only downside of that is ridiculously smooth wines that go down far to easily! The Port House continues to be one of my favourite restaurants in Dublin, long may it continue. read more

Anyone who says you can't eat well in Dublin hasn't been to this place. This underground restaurant, with its decidedly wine cellar feel and highly spanish menu is spot on for food quality and atmosphere. After sampling a hefty variety of dishes, it was difficult for me to find one that I didn't love. Let's look at the lineup 1/2 Charcuterie - oh hell yes, that jamon was beautiful 1/2 Queso - oh hell yes x2 Vegetable paella - just perfect and a nice value Almejas con jamon - imagine that jamon, with olive oil fried clams (you with me) Chorizo al vino - spicy, sweet, a bit smokey, delicious With all of these wonderful things to say, I must comment that the service was not the best I've experienced. Perhaps it was an off night but it seemed like there was just one server for all the tables (around 12) and a man in front seating people / running drinks. The place is not huge but there were points in our meal when we really wanted refills of water and we found them difficult to get. Also, toward the end of the meal, the man clearing our plates was moving very quickly and sloshed hot clam sauce all over our table and a touch hit my friend. Still I highly recommend this restaurant as the food here is really delicious. read more

Walked by this place all the time and never went in cos it looked like some dark, dingy old man's pub from the outside with the black sign and a name like The Port House (similar to the Pub Porterhouse) so never bothered to look in. Today decided to go in for tea and dessert and was pleasantly surprised not only does it have an incredibly romantic, candle-lit, exposed-stonewall interior, it has the best desserts! None of your average defrosted profiteroles, or humdrum apple pies and stale cakes you get in other restaurants but innovative desserts like the Ferrero Rocher cheesecake - was like tasting a cloud, soft and wispy unlike most rubbery/gummy cheesecakes you get in Dublin. I had the churros with the chocolate dipping sauce, so glad to finally see a place in Dublin doing churros! Reminds me of being at an American state fair where they wrap you a nice warm churro stick in paper - this however is a little more classy with 4 small churros curled and served with a choc sauce on the side. Amazing! will try the tapas next time! and if you want to bring a date, go here! the lighting, the buzzy atmosphere, the tapas sharing is perfectly romantic! read more

My friend and I came in here for a quick snack and to try the tapas. He has lived in Barcelona for a little while and wanted to know a little of what Ireland had to offer in the way of Spanish cuisine. The place is really cool looking, and I would 100% recommend it for a date-night because of the setting and it's focus on wines. They have a large wine list that takes up the entire table practically. The problem is that it's a bit too dark in here, and it's way too small. You're less than a foot from the tables on either side of you in many cases and feel like you're sharing a conversation which is annoying. Also, the staff was pretty rude to us. The food looked and sounded good, but it was pretty disappointing. The tapas are tiny and you'll have to order more than just a few to feed yourself, and they're bland and often not very authentic. If they improve the food then The Port House could really be something special, but for now it's just okay. read more

I could go the whole "He Said, She Said" route, but it just makes me angry again. The bottom line was we spoke to the wrong person when we arrived in. Not that we knew this. After 30 minutes patiently waiting for a table, a different person who was actually the hostess told us it would be a 30 minute wait and another group of five were in front of us. People who arrived in after us. So we left. We had to in order to make a gig in time. Their communication with customers is shambolic. Not that saying this will make a difference, the place was very busy. But I couldn't let my old five star review remain. There. It's off my chest. Onwards and upwards :-) read more

Chorizooo! That is officially my favourite sausage of all time, and I'm a gay man. Having just moved to Dublin 2 weeks ago, I wanted to find a lovely tapas bar and lo and behold, my mate invited me for dinner here. Lucky Timmy. It was a cold Tuesday evening but upon entering the darkened candle lit restaurant, it feels like you have stepped into a big wine cellar which has been cleared to accommodate for the 8-10 tables. Very rustic. We ordered 6 dishes - potato croquettes, manchego cheese, stuffed squid, goat cheese souffle and two types of chorizo(ooo). All yummilicious, washed down by a lovely bottle of Tempranillo. The tables were consistently busy and rightfully so, as it is the perfect meal and venue for a cold winter evening. I can imagine the alfresco dining area to be popular during the summer too! read more

I always seem to find myself going back to the Port House. There is a really big selection of tapas. I really like the steak, goats cheese salad and the patatas bravas. I love getting a little bit of a variety of foods so this restaurant is perfect for me. The service can be very hit and miss which is why i dropped a star. We recently travelled around Andalucia, Spain. Expecting superb food all round, we were suprised to realise that the food served at the Port House was actually better than most of what we got there. Dishes to try include the Patatas Bravas, Asparagus, lemon and garlic chicken and the Morcilla with Chickpeas. Tapas can be tricky in Dublin. Lots of places claim to have amazing dishes and some serve them exclusively, but this has to be one of the best. Great atmosphere, quiet but chatty, dark enough to be romantic but bright enough so you can actually see what you're eating. And small, but worth a look :-) If you like tapas, these guys are still doing some of the best locally in Dublin (if you get to Galway try out Cava - which I think may genuinely be the best tapas in Ireland today : http://www.cavarestaurant.ie/) Meanwhile - if you're in Dublin I think Port House and sister restaurant Bar Pinxto on Eustace Street. It's all good - but I tend to favour the fish dishes. We had the little pasadito frito (tiny fried whitebait), prawns, cod - all excellent. Plus some meat to keep us onside - chorizo in red wine being a favourite of mine, and some very good jamon. Last time I was with a Japanese colleague who, like all Japanese, knows his food and is fussy about quality. He loved it and is raring to go back. That's as good a sign as any. Place is ridiculously dark but your eyes adjust after 15 minutes and you can see the mix of tourists and locals packing out the place. Now that there's a full on recession it'll be easier to get a table :-) read more

Once you walk down into the restaurant, you automatically feel like you're no longer in Dublin - ah escapism. I love the lunch menu, very reasonable at €10 for 2 tapas and a glass of wine (or a fancy soft drink - I recommend the ginger beer or the pink lemonade!). It's also nice in the evenings, but you may have to wait for a while as they don't take reservations. The house wine is usually quite good, but a couple of times last year it was a tad 'fizzy', if you know what I mean, but it hasn't been like that since, and I've been back a good few times this year. Great paella, patatas bravas, grilled garlic mushrooms on brushetta, veg stew with manchego cheese....mmm. A good menu for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. read more

Good choice before the Ireland v England Rugby game one Saturday. I was there as part of a party of 11 and really enjoyed it. The portions are small but very filling so be warned before you start adding to your order when you see it arrive to the table ;-) We sat upstairs so didn't really get to experience much atmosphere (we were the only table there) - I enjoyed The Port House and would come back. As Yelp promised, The Port House sure was beautiful. It has that deep, dark, romantic beauty and was exactly what we were looking for. Unfortunately, it also had a 45 minute wait. We had a bottle of wine at the bar upstairs and were feeling pretty good by the time they led us to our table. But the shine started coming off quite quickly. The upstairs isn't as nice as downstairs, and our table in particular was poor. I spent the evening staring at a wall, twisting my head to see my date, and shuffling my chair to allow patrons and servers access the neighboring tables. Not exactly the romance we had hoped for. On the plus side, the food was excellent. Spanish tapas should be a delight, and these were. Mix in a bottle of crisp Crianza and you've got yourself an evening. I should also reiterate a point made by many reviewers: the wine list is extensive, and not a complete rip-off. In fact, the whole meal was well priced - definitely cheaper than I had expected. I wish I could comment on the desserts, but unfortunately our waitress forgot us. Forty minutes after we finished our food and wine we managed to flag her down and, not knowing whether we would have another chance, decided to get the cheque. read more

Had dinner here recently on vacation in Ireland. Walked in and they seated Abby and I right away. The staff was very friendly. At the end of the meal, we did have to go looking for our server, but I think he got busy with a table upstairs. We split a bottle of wine that was reasonably priced (excellent Rioja in the 30 euro range). The cheese platter was perfect. They had some of every cheese (all of which were delicious). It also came with some grapes and bread, etc. We got this with the Jamon, which made for a perfect little starter. Then we split the chicken paella, the meatballs, and the chicken skewers with the paprika and oregano. All three were delicious. That left us in a good position to split the chocolate cake dessert, which I can't recommend highly enough! We *loved* every dish we got. Nothing was "okay", it was all excellent. Lastly, the ambiance is worth a shout-out here. It's very romantic. The dining room is set in an old cellar with lots of exposed brick and candle-light. There's are wine bottles all over the place. Even though the tables are close together, the dim lighting makes the feel for the table intimate. I can't recommend this place highly enough if you like tapas. read more

Popped in to the PortHouse the other day while I was getting my phone fixed in FM Mobiles (Great Place also!!) and it was really good, albeit darker than a Hollister shop. The service was quick (the place was packed) and the food was also impressive (I've been to the one in Dundrum before which is also decent) Price wise it was also pretty good, and if you're looking for a quick, reliable and unique place then this is a perfect fit. The port house is one of my favourite resturants. Although I have been going to another Tapas place recently due to location. The Port house was my favourite resturant in Dublin for a long time. The location is very central and the actual resturant is very nice. Its all stone walls and close tables and is candle lit. The food is just delicous. I dont think I have had a bad dish from there. My favourites are the Potato Bravas, Meatballs and Beef stew. There is an excellent selection of wine as well. The only thing I will say is it can get quite busy and the tables are quite close together so although its a romantic setting there are maybe a few too many tables for comfort. Tasty Tapas! The candlelit atmosphere combined with the perfect bottle of wine at our table for tow was the perfect romantic setting for our first dinner in Ireland. The wine was Celeste Crianza 2007 Tempranillo. We shared many tapas dishes such as Tetilla, Txistorras, Tosta de salmon, Albondigas, Bravas, and Pintxos Morunos. Everything was great but my favorite was the Albondigas which are meatballs in a tomato sauce and Txistorras which is chargrilled chorizo. The service was grand. If you need something then all you have to do is let one of the staff know. They also kept our water filled. The thing I liked the most is being able to have a conversation without someone coming to the table every five minutes to ask us if we need anything. read more

This is definitely more of a 3.5 star but I couldn't justify a 4! Absolutely loved the interior and atmosphere in here. The place is really authentic. I don't know if I just ordered badly or not but only half of my tapas were nice! The paella was not fresh and one of the worse I've tasted and the scallops were also quite bad. On the other hand my gambas were delicious as was the ricotta stuffed courgette. A dessert of churros with hot chocolate dip was good but the churros could have been a lot sweeter. Overall it's good value but I would order more carefully next time. read more

I love this dark full of candles cellar (as much as it feels gothic) it is indeed tapas place! Lets start with foods: all I can tell you its good really good. I've been there couple times and I was never disappointed. You can select from good size menu and just enjoy yourself. Remember do share the food or you will be the only one who tried 1-3 things from their 50+ menu. Now the other stuff the bebidas! I've drunk there one of the nicest Riojas I've came around Ireland. Please experiment!!! (Keep eye on the last bottles specials... they are usually 20-30% cheaper and most of the time blast). It might be tight for group, due to being in the dungeon, but is definitely good spot for some casual 'tapasing' in Dublin! (This is as good as it gets in regards of tapas in Dublin... unfortunately I've been in Spain.. so 4* only). read more

I like the Port House because it works in so many ways... You can have a long dinner with a lot of food, nice wine, sit in the secluded area in the back - or you can just pop in for a quick bite with a friend, share 3 or 4 tasty small dishes sitting on the small outside tables and get up and continue your shopping filled with a bit of nice food. If anyone is reading this as part of my "cheap eats" list, this is the way I'm talking about this place then, you can spend considerably more if you have a proper dinner here - but if you're not hungry, you can get a quick,tasty,cheap bite here. Even cheaper if you're in time for the "Menu Rapido" during the week (two dishes and a glass of wine for 10 Euro) Now I wouldn't expect world-class from tapas places in Dublin and of course it is NOT exactly like in Spain, but the food was always very tasty when I was here. It has a slightly more extensive menu then other tapas places in Dublin, which makes it a bit easier for vegetarians or non-pork eaters to find something good as well. The wine list is extensive and they have quite a few wines by the glass. If I knew anything about wine I could tell more than that I can't recommend their house red - it's the first Rioja I didn't like. However the Mentoste Reserva was excellent when I tried it. They also sell wine to take away as an off-license. The place can get a little bit busy at times, so if you just want to pop in, better have a backup option ready if you don't want to wait. Dada Restaurant just down the road would be my choice if you want a bit of a larger dinner... read more

This place is a not-so-secret hideaway - it's cosy and intimate, they do incredible, authentic food - the chefs that work there have to go to Spain for a year to train on how to make tapas correctly! - and they do a great wine list. Was there pretty recently for an anniversary - was the venue for me and my boyfriend's first date so it's always got my vote no matter what :p It was busy, so started a delicious bottle of Albarino while we waited. But the food - wow - even better than I remembered....their patatos con huevos - basically egg and chips to the rest of us - was sooo good. Definitely a taste of a busy Barcelona tapas bar in the heart of Dublin....delightful read more

Another fab find in Dublin. Fantastic food and if I lived in Dublin, it would be a great date restaurant due to the dark, candle lit ambiance. Don't let this put you off as lots of non dating people go there for bloody good food! Extensive menu with tapas priced from about €3.95-€8.95. Portions are generous and 6 tapas and a shared dessert was enough for us. The tortilla could have done with a touch more seasoning but a small point. Gorgeously cooked squid with aioli, beautiful scallops, foie gras with apples on toast, chorizo and a beautiful aubergine dish were all fab. And if you are gluten free (coeliac/celiac) then come here as the majority of the dishes are gf and if they involve bread, flour or breadcrumbs then they are made with gf stuff!!! It is always good to say to the server that you are gf (this was noted on the bill but no issues for me & having gf bread was a nice touch!). Awesome and more special than special needs! The sangria was lovely. Filled with fruit & lovely and light, rather than overly sweet & heavy like some sangrias. So, when I'm back in Dublin, I'll be back here - service friendly and helpful. Reasonable too for two of us - medium carafe of sangria (3 glasses each), 6 tapas to share (2 of these the more expensive seafood one's) and a huge crema catalana (shared) brought our bill to €56 and we were stuffed! read more

The Port House is an atmospheric and intimate tapas bar. The rustic, redbrick and wood interior make it feel like a candle-lit wine cellar. It's romantic in the traditional sense but you don't have to be part of a love-sick couple to enjoy the ambiance! The menu 'rapido', including two dishes and a glass of wine for €10, guarantees to be delivery within 15 minutes or its free. The group menu offers an array of platters such as deep fried prawns, patatas and spicy sausages. This is typical tapas - plenty to choose from and ample opportunity to mix and match. Space is limited and, due to the excellent 'date potential' of The Port House, it's usually pretty busy so ring ahead! read more

Disclaimer: This is a tourist's review. Pretty average tapas restaurant in my opinion. Good atmosphere, cheap prices, friendly staff. Some of the food is very good, like the fried prawn, and the goat cheese salad. However, basic items like Patatas Bravas are awful and boring (without question the worst bravas I've ever had). Minimal cocktail list is disappointing as well. The few items we ordered seemed to take quite a while to come, and this was at 9 at night when it wasn't terribly busy. Overall, not a place I would visit again. It's not bad, but nothing to write home about. read more

A cosy little tapas restaurant that serves some great food. They have a dish with black pudding that is divine - I plan on selling my first born to get the recipe. Seating is a bit cramped, but that's part of the charm. The noise from people talking and laughing can get *very* loud - the last time I went with a friend we had to cut our dinner a little short because we couldn't hear each other across the table. For this reason I would recommend going here on a quieter weekday night. Prices are reasonable, and even though the dishes are small I guarantee you'll leave stuffed. They have a big wine list, and the waiters have made some great suggestions the last few times I was there. It's a nice place to have a leisurely lunch/dinner, and if they could do something about the noise levels it would be perfect. read more
