I stopped in on "Black Friday" on my way to a medical appointment. The Porterhouse Pub was open and had a few tables occupied, so there was no problem getting seated. I noticed a bunch of slates with beer names and spotted a cider from Terramar advertising a Strawberry Rhubarb cider and decided I wanted to try that flavor combination. It was sweet with a little tart aftertaste. For my meal I opted for the Porterhouse Cheese Curds as an appetizer and the Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich with fries for my main dish. The cheese curds were nicely battered and fried and the housemade ranch was a nice accompaniment to the cheese curds. The spicy crispy chicken sandwich was only crispy on the outside where the batter was applied! The rest of the chicken was tender and juicy. So tasty . I didn't think the sandwich was all that spicy, but that would be my fault because I eat jalapeno like candy and routinely use habanero hot sauce on my food. Even though I didn't think it was all that spicy I did enjoy the flavor and crunch of the sandwich. There was a bunch of steak fries served with my sandwich. Excellent fries, but way too many for me to eat them all. I think I probably ate only 1/4 of them!! I was very tempted to order a slice of the chocolate cheesecake with housemade fudge for dessert, but I was stuffed by my appetizer and meal. read more

Stopped in here for a late afternoon snack with my daughter on Shop Small Saturday, and we had such a nice time. I had been here years ago, but not in quite awhile. The service was fast and friendly, and the prices were super affordable. I especially appreciated that they had one of my favorite seltzers, from Stemma Brewing, on tap! We enjoyed a couple of appetizers. The calamari was crispy and delicious, and served with a side of tasty aioli. Although not quite enough aioli, as we ran out about half way through the calamari and had to order more. (Tbh I was kinda surprised when I saw they had charged us for the "extra" aioli.) The hot artichoke dip was good, too, though the portion was pretty small for the price. I'd come back again, but maybe during happy hour as it might be a better value. read more

My husband and I were looking to have a nice casual dinner out and enjoy a couple craft beers. We had eaten here once before years ago and wanted to try them again but they are always closed Sundays. The evening we went, there were very few people there, for tulip season, which surprised us. Our waiter was great and staff were friendly. I wouldn't complain about a pub being run down as that often adds character, but I could feel the springs in the booth seat when we sat down. That made me wonder if they were struggling to stay in business. My two fish tacos and handful of tortilla chips were $21 and unfortunately, lacking in flavor. My husband's entree of garlic steak fries with steak strips on top was $28 and reportedly "ok" but the craft beer selection was great and waiter was attentive. We each had two beers. The bill of $90 came and we were floored at what we had received there versus what we could have had elsewhere for significantly less. We were so bummed to be down one future dinner option. I am more of a non micro beer person, however they have a ton of them.. The food was pretty good, but a bit pricey. My wife and i stopped in for a quick lunch and cold brew. Free parking can be found on the street as well in the community parking lot. Discover is an accepted form of payment. There was nothing quick about our lunch here. Severely understaffed with only one waitperson working the bar as well as the restaurant. We seated ourselves and waited 10 minutes for the table to be cleaned off. We waited another 10 minutes just for our brews to be served. We were seated for an hour before our lunch was finally set down in front of us. We each had a couple of local pints of brew for $5 each. Fair pricing. We shared the Porterhouse Cheeseburger for $12: cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and french fries. We had to cut our own burger to avoid having a split plate charge of $2. Overall the one waitperson was friendly, the brews tasty and the food decent. Hopefully the next time we stop in here, staffing will be sufficient. read more

First time here. Easy to find. The help is friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Wood floors (original), wood tables (rustic), plenty of seating options (tables, booths, bar, high table, half both with 2 chairs). Very comfortable place to meet, eat, or just have a drink and some conversation. The BBQ Brisket Sandwich was AWESOME. The brisket had a nice smokey flavor to it. The sauce was just right and it was topped off with fresh coleslaw. The fries were OK - full disclosure, I am not a fry guy. The wife thought they were really good. I would trust her judgement on that over mine. It was a 50 mile drive on a whim and we were very satisfied. I would actually come back for just lunch all on its own and drive straight back home. Certainly not a bad option in Downtown Mount Vernon, but it wouldn't be my first choice. The tap list is great, and service was friendly, but that's about where it stopped. My fish and chips were a little overbreaded, and on both the fish and chips and burger, they seemed to make up for the lack of food with extra fries. This isn't necessarily bad, but it was a bit skimpy on the fish/burger meat. Service, while friendly, was a bit slow, which didn't make much sense considering the place was a ghost town. For a Thursday night, it wasn't a bad meal, but after visiting once, I think I'd choose another location in the future. read more

This was a decent place to hang out during the happy hour, we sat by the big glass window and it was a nice sunnier day, so it felt good after a long walk in the tulip fields and in the farmer's market that was also on that day. The beer selection is awesome, lots of IPAs on draft, the wine selection is ok. Happy hour has some discounts, although the salad that I ordered is the same price on the regular menu. The fish tacos my friend ordered were just ok, although they looked good there was nothing too special. The crab corn chowder was good. And the salad was decent. Our waitress was accommodating and checked in on us, despite being the only server at that time. I would definitely go back for the decent beer selection, not so much for food. read more

I had the garlic and Brie burger. I really was stoked about getting it but super disappointed when I got it. It's a small and thin burger patty. Almost like it was from a pack of frozen patties purchased from Costco. The garlic and Brie and bun and other toppings and fries were all good, it just had a super sad beef patty. Two stars for the atmosphere. I really liked hanging out in the restaurant, but the burger was not great. They need significant work on their burger patty. I'm really surprised others have posted five stars on the burger. My buddy got the fish and chips. The fried fish was soggy. Maybe the fryer wasn't hot enough when they fried it. Great lil gem in mount Vernon that's in the cute down town waterfront area of the city. Never knew about this spot until a friend suggested it and I love it. Great feel and aesthetic right when you walk in. Loved the distressed tables and the flow of the restaurant. The food was great and surprising To be honest. My weeks work wrapped up early. This time, I headed towards Mount Vernon to explore. Let's just say the downtown has seen better times and the nearby mall and associated business strip wasn't all that interesting (except for maybe reacquainting myself with Fred Meyer and wandering into the Skagit Valley Food Co-op). What was more interesting and fun was watching the Halloween pageant of kids and their parents trick or treating the downtown businesses. Apparently in parts of Washington, house to house trick or treating is either illegal or discouraged. The downtown event and the family party afterward does seem like a safer alternative. Afterward, I wandered into the Porterhouse, which was recommended to me by a work colleague. It's actually a pub and not a steak house. A sustantial menu is available and they have an excellent selection of drafts from various Pacific Northwest breweries. I had an October fest which was very tasty. More excellent was the blue cheese burger, that was cooked just right and placed on an amazingly good roll. I was tired of fries and opted for vegetable soup, which was very tasty and more like minestrone. There's a lot of really good beer and pub grub places up here in the Pacific Northwest. It's too bad that I have run out of time to try any more on this trip! read more

Left the dwelling for a nice evening drive down here for some take-out. I pull up at the bar, last call, get a beer and look over the menu. I settle on the Pulled Pork sandwich with fries. My beer went down soo smoooth and speedy, I just smiled at myself. Mt Vernon downtown is a quiet and empty, yet charming, place late at night. Then you walk in here and it's a life of it's own. A locally owned, open and accepting establishment, that is quintessential Mt. Vernon! Wonderful, delicious, upscale, yet way reasonably priced pub grub keeps us coming back! Last couple of trips we've enjoyed the grilled fish tacos, grilled cheese sandwich w/ brie and prosciutto, and a stellar pub burger. Excellent variety of on tap brews and wine selection. After our meal we always enjoy a waterfront stroll which is steps away from the porterhouse. read more

We started with an appetizer but it was so good that we decided to order a sandwich just because we wanted to eat more. I try not to give 5 stars too often, but between the excellent beer selection and delectable food, it's completely warranted. A high 3 stars. They have an excellent list of beers on tap. I also like the setting and atmosphere. Unfortunately, I really don't think the food here is all that impressive. What really tipped the scale toward 3 stars is a specific pet peeve of mine, and it involves steakhouses naming a steak after themselves. They come with the implication that the piece of meat in question is somehow unique and amazing when they are mediocre. The culprit here is a 16oz "Certified Angus®" named "The Porterhouse (GF)," which was, admittedly, not the worst I've had, but certainly dry and bland enough to trigger me (#triggered). The mashed potatoes were kind of cold too and not very good. read more

A-OK ++. I really want to give it 3.5 stars, but, alas. The decor is cool. It's a seat-yourself situation, and there were plenty of tables when we arrived (a little after 6pm on a Saturday night). The service was a mixed bag. I think they may only have one waitress, which would kind of explain things. Everything was just very slow, though the waitress was very friendly. After we sat down, she came by and gave us menus, then a few minutes later came by and took our drink orders, then several minutes after that came back with the drinks, then several minutes after that took our meal orders. There was a VERY long delay before our appetizer (nachos with guac) arrived--maybe 25-30 minutes since we ordered it? We were hungry and grouchy. When it came, though, it was ENORMOUS (and for $12, you would really hope so). It was probably appropriately sized for four people to snack on before dinner (rather than two, which was what we had). It was generally tasty and well-spiced, though it may have just seemed that way because we were famished. The entrees arrived just after we finished the nachos, which was nice. My boyfriend enjoyed the fish and chips, and I had ordered the fire roasted tomato penne primavera. My pasta was super overcooked (like falling apart when I touched it with my fork overcooked), and the veggies varied in their degree of cooked-ness. There were no discernible flavors besides "tomato" and "somewhat spicy," which was disappointing. There was cheese on it, but it didn't seem to be fresh grated, and wasn't very flavorful. It did come with a hunk of tasty bread, which I enjoyed. Luckily I was super full from the nachos, so I was forgiving. Also, when the waitress came back (several minutes after my boyfriend had finished eating, and many minutes since I had finished), I explained that it had been overcooked but that I didn't require any more food, and she took it off the bill, which was nice. It also took her a long time after dropping off the bill to come back and pick it up, and then a while longer to come back with the credit card receipt to sign. All told we were there for over an hour and a half, which was longer than I would have liked. The service was friendly but slow. The atmosphere was cool. The nachos were good, my entree was pretty meh, but my boyfriend really enjoyed his fish and chips, and our drinks (1 beer and 1 cider) were tasty. So, A-OK++ overall. I would try something different next time I'm in Mount Vernon, but I was pretty satisfied with my experience at The Porterhouse. read more

Just not as good as it used to be. Stopped in for an early Happy Hour with the wife today. Ordered a number of Happy Hour selections and a small Caesar salad to split. I'll lead with the positive: Service was great! We shared the jalapeño/spinach dip and a pretzel. The jalapeño/spinach dip was pretty small, but it was OK. It was accompanied by some Tostitos. Seriously. The pretzel was actually two pretzel sticks, about an inch in diameter. There wasn't a drop of salt on either pretzel. It's almost as if whomever prepared the pretzels had never eaten one before. Our Caesar salad was good and a fair size for $5. We enjoyed it. My wife had the carnitas tacos, which looked like the value of the night! Plenty of meat, nice presentation. Until we tasted them - about as bland as you could imagine! This one really didn't make any sense. There was salsa verde and la cream sauce, but the tacos were still just bland. The meat wasn't fatty; it just wasn't seasoned at all. I had the 3 pulled pork sliders, which were OK. Nothing to write home about. All in all, it was a bit of a disappointment. We're still looking for a decent, consistent place for a good Happy Hour in Skagit County. The hunt shall continue... read more

My wife and I stopped over for a quick drink and bite after attending the annual Tulip Festival. The Porterhouse has a nice selection of beers, especially from the Pacific NW. I had the arugula salad with grilled chicken. It was just fine, although a handful less of the black olives would have lent a more balanced flavor. The wife had the fish and chips which were even better -- the fish had a nice beer-y batter and was not overly greasy, but I wish they used steak fries instead of the crinkle cut variety (my wife preferred the crinkle-cut, though -- so that's cool, I guess). To be frank, though, I wasn't expecting such a hip pub in a small town like Mount Vernon, so The Porterhouse was a pleasant surprise. This review is for the food alone, because it's terrible. We had the penne pasta and buffalo salmon sandwich with salad and fries. True, we probably ordered the wrong items, but if these are the worst on the menu, pull them. Both were made from low-quality food service ingredients. Not much different than eating at a cafeteria. The fries are the frozen crinkle cut kind, which are fine for Dennys, but not a pub that tries to pass itself off as trendy. Quality fries can define a good pub. And if you're vegetarian, don't bother. Also, the Yelp menu is way out of date so don't go by that. Here's what I recommend: Make your fries something people remember. You're in Skagit, the land of potatoes. Buy fresh, local potatoes and serve a thick wedge garlic cheese fry. Add a condiment that helps differentiate like chipotle aioli. Salads, go for mixed greens, not just romaine and house make some decent dressings. Add a signature high protein vegetarian favorite like a house made spicy bean burger or a creative tempeh sandwich. Something even meat eaters will order every once in awhile. Add a side of kimchi, Pleasant Valley kraut or something fermented and you'll start to hit some trends. Salmon, we're in the NW. Everyone has a signature salmon dish. A hunk of salmon on a baguette doesn't cut it. Spice it up. Smother it in a local blueberry glaze. Something, anything. Just not dry salmon on dry bread. read more
