Not far from the freeway, although not much traffic wanders this way. A nice stop while driving up Old 99 for a burger and a drink. The day I was here the taps were out, so if you wanted a drink it had to be from the cooler. Plenty of good options including some local ciders. The burger was cooked a little more than I'd prefer, but still tasty. Crisp bacon makes everything better. Good tots! read more

My boyfriend wanted fried chicken, and since we were in the area and had read the rave reviews about the fried chicken, we decided to stop by. The fried chicken and Jojos were awful--chewy chicken and lackluster potatoes. The cordon Bleu balls were good. The iced tea is that garbage that comes out of the fountain. The only thing worse than the food was the service. Our server was rude and moved at the pace of a geriatric snail. She snapped at us when we waited to be seated, made a snarky comment when my boyfriend went up to the bar to order (he was hoping to move things along), and couldn't figure out whether to give us knives or just forks. The place is depressing as hell--dark and dank with horribly uncomfortable booths. On a brighter note, the women's bathroom was clean. read more

The food is always good here whether you're going for quick and easy fried food (the fried chicken is great!) or if you're ordering a meal. There is typically only one bartender and/or one server working so if the place is packed service can run a bit behind, but that happens everywhere, and at least they're always friendly at the Alger. read more

Hate to say anything bad about a place trying to survive during this COVID time, but the food is not good. It just didn't live up to the hype that we heard about. It is currently doing only to go orders food items from 4 to 8pm. We ordered hot wings, blue burger with bacon, and a side of their regular fries. Maybe the to go order made the food not as good if it had been for dining in. Here's my review on the food we ordered: Hot Wings -- not crispy--what you would find at any grocery store deli, no seasoning, and the lack heat and buffalo sauce Blue Cheese Burger- not fresh; taste like it a frozen patty meat that they heated up Fries-- standard frozen fries heated up Jalapeno Poppers- these were probably our least favorite Overall-- it's mainly a neighborhood bar..and so for that it fits the standard of "bar food." Just didn't live up to the hype that we were told from friends. It is the ONLY restaurant/dining option in Alger. Spoke with the lovely waitress who took our orders and was informed that the workers were volunteering to work so that the cost of maintaining the place would be still open. It is definitely a local joint and from what I can tell supported by the surround locals in Alger. For that it is a gem and should be supported. I just wish it had better food so that I would support it more. Maybe we'll have to try dining in once Covid allows, and we'll have to try it again. read more

On a good note, with all the strangeness in the world, this place is unchanged! Was here a number of years ago and exactly how remember it. Food is exactly how remember it too! Had the burger and it exceeded my expectations for a place like this. Very good. Fries are very crisp, tender on the inside, piping hot straight from fryer. If you're looking to hide in the booths deep dark , smoke out the back, drink good beer or cheap booze , eat some fantastic tater tots and share a decent club sandwich or burger while negotiating a super secret deal.... This is the place you want to be. Its been there for a billion years, great crossroads location and the only bar option for miles. Okay, this might be unfair as they are just opening post Covid, but the potato's tasted like they hadn't been washed and the burger was almost comically overdone. I live in Alger - this is home for us - and I've watched them struggle with take out since the Plandemic. Now, with reduced capacity, they are open for inside dining. I'm very happy to sit I see and not take my "to go" order home. There have been changes since their closure for indoor dining - inside are new table tops, new carpets, and an amazingly clean environment. The menu is reduced in size (not so much seafood :), but the Ooey Gooey burger is still off the chain good. My wife had the fish and chips and loved them. If you're driving between Seattle and Bellingham, get off of I-5 at exit 240, go east to the 4 way stop about a mile away. The Alger Bar and Grille is there, and it's worth the stop! read more

So ,I go in on a Sunday,probably post early rush,waitresses busy clearing tables and probably gearing up for Seahawks game,guessing six other people in place.Ordered Eggs Benedict with home fries.A waitress other than the one that took my order brought it to me,then took off.I know where they keep the Tobasco sauce so I got it myself.Had ordered home fries,got hashbrowns,eggs poached hard,English muffins not toasted,Hollandaise sauce a greasy mess.Waited patiently for my bill.If someone had asked me how my meal was,I wouldn't be writing this.I have had some very good meals here,so disappointed in this last experience ,I weigh whether to go back. read more

This place is kind of dingy, a lot worn, and somewhat of a hole in the wall. You can either accept that or you can't. For me, that's part of why I go. The people are salt-of-the-earth. The fried chicken is fantastic. I mean, legitimately great. I haven't hadd any better anywhere in the area, to include Bantam 46 in Bellingham (which is fried chicken by and for people who have only ever had fried chicken at a drive through). Alger has enough beer to keep you happy, good prices, and good service, and great chicken. If you only care about how it looks on Instagram, you'll be disappointed. read more

First visit to Alger Bar & Grill. Right in the center of town. This is the kind of bar/tavern that used to be found all over Western Washington...but this one is still here and doing well. This place has more windows than I would expect , there was quite a bit of natural light. We stopped during a fall ride. We ordered dinner entrees and beers. Service was good relatively quick, sufficient, unremarkable. I had fish and slaw, it was a dark beer batter fry with ok slaw, not the best I have ever had. The slaw was a little dry and mostly a mayonnaise flavor. The Fish was good, fresh, and a good size serving. The Alger wasn't busy and there were mostly folks there for an evening meal and a beer. Only one patron was at the bar. This is a decent bar in the country, with okay food and drink. I'll probably return in the future. read more

Here's the deal. It's a local tavern w/ cold beer (13+ drafts and more in bottles) and decent food. It's been here forever. Recently someone blew through the adjacent 4 way stop in their car and impaled their car into the side of the building. No problem, they just put a #12 sign over the hole and it's business as usual. No biggie. For those of us who live nearby it's a reliable option for food and conversation. We're nice, friendly and occasionally talkative but around here we aren't nosy. We were camping nearby and didn't feel like sitting out in the rain to cook lunch so we drove about 10 mins into Alger area and found this little Jem. Wasn't expecting much, but once we entered it was a nice big space with lots of seating a few couples having lunch and a couple of guys sitting at the bar.. I have to say I think the service is what made this visit so remarkable, my boyfriend and I were talking Bout how much we had enjoyed interacting with our server even after the camping trip! Lots of beers to choose from, several IPAs but we both ordered something from Elysian. We had the fish and chips, as well as a chicken slider special. The chicken was amazing, better than expected and my boyfriend said his fish was good as well. We will definitely be back, thanks for a great experience! read more

We are locals that love a local friendly bar. ABG has been remodeled since COVID hit. They are doing to go orders 4 to 8 PM daily. You are free to enjoy a cocktail while waiting for your order. I was shocked to see the previous reviews. The broasted chicken at this place has caused me to put them on speed dial when I am passing through from Seattle to Bellingham to pick up "to go" food. Nice place to grab a drink. But, the food is beyond terrible I would not recommend this place to anyone even those I hate. They get their food from the trucking company called Aramark who provide food for prisons. The place is extremely rundown from front to back. The last time it was there I ordered the chicken fried steak dinner and my dinner roll was so stale that I could skip it across a pond like a rock. When I asked for it to be replaced the waitress told me that the biscuits have been that way for days and they haven't gotten a new shipment in. The long time hang out for the local Alger resident, I first visited this place while still in the womb. My dad ran a small business out of this bar during the late 70's and early 80's. He also used to beat up Canadian tourists with Friends for fun back in the day. It hasn't changed much in the last 30 years. Cheap food and drink, pool tables and cheap beer. Sometimes live music. If you want to see some Mountain hill people this would be the place. Great for memories and nostalgia of Alger, the place of my birth. read more

We stopped in here Saturday evening on the way home from Bellingham after driving by the sign for it on I5 a hundred times. I always wondered what kind of place it was since it seems like the middle of no where. Well, it is pretty much what you'd think! We walked in, were greeted and sat down where we wanted. Our server was so sweet and friendly, and she helped me order a perfect dinner. Fried chicken and a garden salad. Sounds simple, and it was, but it was prepared perfectly! I was sad to read the other reviews here! I had to add my two cents. Non-Locals are unwelcome? How untrue is this? VERY! I spotted this establishment while I was out on my sidecar motorbike and ventured inside on a Saturday night. To me it seemed like only locals were present but I was welcomed in as one of their own. Age group ranged from 21 to eighty. The best part? NO MINORS ALLOWED (awesome!). The bartender and waitress were super nice and even chatted w/me for a few moments while I got settled. I struck up a conversation w/a bloke at the corner bar for directions and he was as polite as could be. My beer was cold, food was hot and delivered quickly (and it was very tasty). I will definitely stop back again when I'm in the area. I'd even go out of my way to being friends here. I would say this place holds true to all my expiations of a local drinking establishment. read more
