This is for real one of the coolest bar concepts I've ever had the pleasure to walk into and I'm not even a huge Harry Potter fan. A server at a restaurant recommended Press Room to my spouse and I, so we went there into the trendy-flowery mirrored lobby into what felt like a secretive entrance. The wizard at the host stand indicated that we couldn't be seated but that we could stand at a small high-top to which we replied hell yea because we were only there for one quick drink on the way to a scheduled event. The bartender was so cool and I would've loved more time to chat with her, and look at all of the amazing HP details that they worked into every inch of the small space. If I'm in Greenville again I won't hesitate to have a drink at this place, regardless of what the theme is. (I suggest Princess Bride or Clue!)

TLDR: go to Swordfish or Exile if you want your trendy, downtown socks knocked off. I created the entry for The Press Room here on Yelp! just to write this review, so I'm not certain if they'll actually see it. (The views expressed in this review are my personal opinions. I understand that simply because an environment does not suit my tastes, that it still can be enjoyable for others. I'm not in the business of telling anyone what they should do with their bar or restaurant. This review is to shed a little light on what The Press Room is trying to hide from us. Perhaps, I also have too much time on my hands this evening.) We visited the highly-anticipated, most buzzworthy cocktail bar in downtown Greenville last week. While our visit was accommodated by a kind hostess, a knowledgeable & funny server, and a friendly bartender, we were quite disappointed with the overall experience of this ploddingly esoteric bar. Firstly, none of the employees were wearing masks. The information online is incorrect (we see 3 Moody Street, as well as addresses for Broad Street and Main Street); the website is non-existent; and the articles written about it are inflated with compliments and praise. Even the Instagram account and Facebook page (that declares it as a restaurant -- there's no food) are cryptic. "For reservations, visit resy.com" Withholding information in hopes of encouraging a mysterious reputation does not a speakeasy make. The "exclusivity" factor, frankly, comes off as elitist and is alienating. Having a door code and that wonderful! secret entrance was really thrilling at first, but that feeling eventually faded once we were in the door and seated in the room, where we were able to absorb what appeared to be a hotel bar or Sky Lounge. The music throughout the evening was off-putting. A bizarre mix of a classical, jazzy, emotional soundtrack which kept our group from enjoying a conversation ... instead commenting on the irksome sounds which weren't coherent with the sights. The drinks are all grossly expensive at $18-26 on the cocktail menu. Gouging unsuspecting guests to pay the high rent is not mysterious & cool. Greenville is not ready nor yet big enough for those price tags. The menu contains no recipe too imaginative. The best drink at our table was Seeing Bowties: perfectly balanced, with a notable amount of booze, served in a glass vessel resembling my grandfather's pipe. The other drinks were watered down and unmemorable, with bits of ice still floating in their pale colors, yet also served in beautifully shaped, delicate coupe-style glassware. As one of my friends put it, we have "the sense of The Press Room not meeting the requirements set by its price." All across this wonderful city are more enthralling atmospheres that serve wild (and mild) drinks without insulting you. I encourage you to visit them.

Let me get to the issue first. We were a table of 6 and any party of 6 or more is required to do the tasting menu at $85 per person. We were there to celebrate my daughter's birthday, so it was not an issue, but this really should be stated up front when taking reservations, when confirming reservations and upon arrival. I'm sure this has resulted in some awkward exchanges for those not prepared. That being said, The Anchorage deserves the accolades it has been given. Every dish was spectacular, from the beet salad to start the meal to the apple pie to finish. We had crispy arancini that was the nights favorite, and the short ribs melted in our mouths. The portions are modest, yet we all left satisfied. There were three vegetable forward dishes, the beet salad, an Asian leaning cabbage dish and a carrot dish with a delicious sauce. In all we sampled 8 dishes and three desserts, as well as a bread service that came with an unctuous bourbon liver mousse. You will have a magnificent meal and experience there.
