There was a private party upstairs but the organizer (I assumed) welcomed our group upstairs to look around. Thank you! I ordered the Vodka Rigatoni with short rib and sorry to say, I was not pleased. It was cold and the short rib was dry. I did not make a fuss about it at the time which I'm sure would be corrected, however, why would this dish leave your kitchen. Do better! I want this restaurant to prosper! The Prewitt is exactly what Plainfield needed--an upscale dining experience that is classy but not pretentious. And it is a stellar use of a historic downtown building that had been vacant for years. The management does a great job paying homage to the space's movie theater history, from the cocktails to the chef's treat to dessert. The menu is creative and changes just frequently enough. We've been there for dinner, live entertainment, drinks at the bar, and brunch and all were top notch. The staff has always been attentive, professional, and personable. We haven't had a chance to dine upstairs yet, so we're looking forward to that and to enjoying the outdoor roof space this summer. read more

Everything from the popcorn crisps with truffle butter & the Wagyu corn dogs to the service and ambiance was excellent! I had the Half Roasted Chicken which came with mashed potatoes, and the entire dish was out of this world! It's also not badly priced for the quality of food that you receive. This is an AMAZING Venue! The atmosphere is top-notch, everything one would want. Sadly, I can't say as much for the food, or the prices. Maybe I'm just not cultured enough but I really dislike having to look up every word in a description of a meal. Plain English would be good, and food that a "normal" person would eat would also be good. I get trying to be "upscale" but the venue itself has it. if you just had "great food", at a reasonable price, it would booked full every night. 3 stars because it the most expensive meal I have ever finished and yet left STILL hungry. I had reservations for my birthday and have to say, my experience at the Prewitt was maybe the worst in 43 years of life. Upon arriving, there was one couple seated. The restaurant was empty. The room temperature was so cold that I had to go back to the car and get more coats. It was 68 degrees outside, but freezing inside. The server went over specials, discussed soup of the day. I inquired about oysters. About 10 to 15 min later, "Chef' doesn't make accommodations regarding the oysters. Also, the soup is not available. We only serve it during lunch." I had only wanted the oysters to eat bc I eat them in honor of my late father every year on my birthday and his. I accepted this was not happening and my son wasn't going to get soup. A good amount of time later, we order. I order the swordfish. I am told that they have had an inventory issue and there is no swordfish. I let others order. I settled on a salad. My son ordered buttered noodles. The other person also ordered a salad. We were told that "chef" had us for dessert though. About an hour later, our food arrived. It was AWFUL. The salad was chewy and could only be cut w a steak knife. We didn't eat the salads. The buttered noodles were peppered, so that was a no go for my son. No one asked if we were good. I had to raise my hand for service. After 2 hours, I left. I didn't even wait on dessert. I had to get my son home to bed. The server said that "Chef is Gordon Ramsay, only worse and does not do accommodations." I can understand this if they were slammed or had a very particular menu, like Valentine's Day, but that was not the case. I don't know what the bill was bc my mother was paying, but I know I would never go back to this place. I tried contacting them to no avail. I posted on fb to be deleted. We were excited to try this great new spot in Plainfield--the Prewitt. It is built in the old theater with the menus themed to that effect. Food and drinks were unique and delicious. We peaked our head in the upstairs bar and outside patio which will be so fantastic in the spring and summer. I'm so glad to have a non-chain fine dining option so close! Went to The Prewitt for their grand opening lunch today. Finally.... a nice, upscale restaurant on the West side! The menu is a nice play on a movie script, given the history of The Prewitt, it's perfect. We started with a "preview" of steak and mushrooms, I had a lovely cocktail, S.B.N.T.S. (sweet but not too sweet) and my husband had a craft beer called White Rascal. For lunch I had the Fall Noodle Bowl and he had the CBR sandwich. Both were delicious. Our only criticisms are that the winter squash in the bowl was a little al dente and my husband would've preferred if the chicken breast had been a little thinner. Otherwise, the flavors were on point! The atmosphere was very welcoming. I like how they kept some of the old movie theater ties. There were three restrooms that I saw on the main floor and one that I saw upstairs. Bonus points for carrying feminine products in the bathroom! We can't wait to return! read more

Our family of 6 went there last night and the food was abysmal. We had a reservation and were seated promptly but then were left at the table with no menus and no water for 20 minutes. From the time we were seated to the time we received our food was a little over an hour and a half. The food was all cold (not warm, cold) upon arrival. I had the mushroom pasta which had no sauce and literally 3 slices of a mushroom. It felt like they ran out of ingredients and had to scrape together my dish. Another one of the dishes was the stuffed chicken which again was cold and so tough it was practically inedible. Again it felt like they had run out of ingredients and had to thaw a piece of chicken real fast which contributed to the texture. It also did not look like the other tables stuffed chicken dishes. The hamburger was overcooked and tasteless but we all could agree that the fries were good. Also, the fried chicken sandwich we ordered came grilled so they did remake that and it arrived so late everyone else had finished picking at their cold entrees. The chicken sandwich was the only thing we received hot. One of the meals we got was part of the Devour menu and by the time they brought the dessert we were over it and told them to keep it because we had already been there so long. Everything was extremely overpriced for the quality of the ingredients and the preparation. We did speak to a manager before leaving to let her know about the issues and she took off our two appetizers from our bill (which was funny because those were the only two items we liked out of the whole meal). I'm really disappointed we paid for any of it because the whole experience was so bad. I understand Devour was going on and things may have been busier, but instead of it attracting new customers, it ensured we'll not be back. I'll start with the positive. I loved the atmosphere. We walked into "Philadelphia Story" on the big screen and ended with "An American in Paris". Now, for the not so positive... Food-artistry over taste. Nothing phenomenal and exceptionally overpriced for what was offered. Service-Odd. Our server kept throwing chef under the bus...but we weren't complaining about anything. Very strange. They kept talking about the chef like he was a tyrant...to add to the oddity with the server when we first came in we let them know about our reservation and we were seated. We told them we were waiting on two more people. The other half of our party had been seated under our name at a different table...we didn't know that for about 10 minutes . The piece de resistance for the evening was a bat flying around which led to the outside door being propped open for about 30 minutes. All in all I don't recommend ordering a meal here. Drinks? Maybe. They're $15-$16 each. Appetizers looked okay. This could be a very cool place, but I would revisit the menu and go with some solid American fare and move away from the very overpriced artsy menu. I wanted to love it as did the rest of my party, but it won't be a place we revisit anytime soon. read more

Was excited to try the Prewitt for our anniversary this weekend, what a disappointment! Ceviche app was ok, but wait time was long. About 20 mins after ordering, our server said they were out of the short rib I ordered, no apology or anything. I picked the special instead, NY strip. After another 30mins we got our dishes. NY strip was overcooked, fat not rendered, no seasoning and it was on top of the worst thin sliced potatoes I've ever had. Literally had to spit out the first bite. Chewy and also no seasoning. Wife's salmon was overcooked, not terrible but no where near $40, on top of undercooked, bland risotto. My wife ate about 1/2 of hers but I just asked them to take mine off because the wait time was so long and mine was inedible. Server was somewhat apologetic but seemed like it was a pretty common occurrence. Ended up going home and cooking my own steak properly instead. Lesson learned! I honestly think the good reviews are from people who had a few more cocktails than us. read more

I order a New York strip and It was super thin to the point I thought I was a tiny pork chop. The steak was unseasoned, I ordered the brown butter but I couldn't tell. The steak was dry and unappetizing. I got the 101 old fashion and it was delicious. The poutine with short rib was to die for. Steak was not good though. Service was good and ambiance was amazing. We had a reservation at 7:15 and didn't end up getting seated until 7:45. There were several guests that came in after us but were seated before us because they bullied the hostess into seating them. read more

We've been to the Prewitt twice since it opened once for brunch and once for dinner. The brunch was very good especially my expresso martini. The service we received from Stafan was 5 star!!! We went back on Friday night for Date night and unfortunately did not enjoy our experience. We were given a table for two which was fine except that it was next to a hightop table of 6 which blocked our view of the stage and the entertainment. On the other side of us was a table for four. It wasn't the romantic date night we expected. We felt pinned in between the two tables. The tables were very close together. We not only could not see the stage and entertainment but it was very loud and noisy with 10 people sitting on top of us. We couldn't even hear each other talk. My recommendation to the management would be to move the small table for two to the middle of the floor instead of behind a high top table of six so the couple can actually see the stage. I also think the high top tables would be better in the back of the room rather than in the front of the room to block everyone's view or possibly move down to the lower section. We felt like we paid a lot of money to feel like we were sitting in a corner and not able to enjoy the experience of the restaurant and the entertainment. read more

The atmosphere and space is beautiful and lovely and I will go back and give it another try. I have been concerned, the space would be cold and drafty, but was happy that the dining area was warm and comfortable. Met a friend there. We were directed to the bar, and not offered seats in the dining area. We had to ask to be seated in the dining area. We had come for Sunday brunch. Lots of seating available and were given the uncomfortable ones. Wanting to select from the brunch menu to try it for the first time, I was sad when one of two vegetarian offerings was completely unavailable. I ordered the pancake. It came out burnt. The waitress should not have served it. I don't send food back!!. I ate what was edible. I saw the same menu item arrive at another table so I know what it should have looked like. Sunday kitchen staff needs to be consistent. It was very sad. I was able to remove a topping, but was not able to add a topping. Of course, the chef should have several spicy citrusy offerings to accent his menu item. Only able to remove an item and not add one was very sad. This was told to me by the waitress. I asked for what looked like a delicious lavender biscuit on the side and was told I could not order a side that was not on the side menu. That is very sad also. Being a vegetarian, the menu didn't offer me much. I will try again, because I know it takes a while to get new restaurant venues in place. I was excited about this upscale offering. read more

The space itself is wonderful. It's fun to have a black and white movie playing in the background. Cocktails were fabulous. They only had a choice of a few desserts, and two were mason jar types. What a wonderful experience. The Prewitt is a lovely venue and they have done a wonderful job restoring and improving her. The cocktails were to die for, not a miss in the bunch of specialty cocktails we ordered. The Waygu corn dogs were really amazing and while I think the kitchen has some work to do in perfecting the entrees, all the meals were enjoyable and a good value. Bread pudding for dessert was delicious and the right amount of bread to liquid ratio. The highlight of the evening by far was our server Joe. Dined at The Prewitt for the first time on Friday evening and it was a strong showing from start to finish! We began with the shrimp cocktail which featured five large prawns with a delightfully crisp texture and lightly salty fresh taste. Accompanied by a spicy but not overpowering cocktail sauce, a cream sauce, and microgreens. This combo nicely complemented the shrimp without distracting from the flavor of the shrimp. We each had a glass of Prosecco, whose light sweetness contrasted nicely with the salty/spicy appetizer. For our mains, we split the duck breast porchetta and lamb shank. Duck was nicely done, tender and moist with a wonderful accompanying sauce and vegetables. While the duck breast is the star of the dish, it could have benefited from a bit more of the veggies. Lamb shank was falling off the bone and succulent. Here the flavor of the lamb is really what speaks rather than herbs or spices - if you like the flavor of lamb, you will be delighted with this! We had a glass of Pinot noir with the duck, which was medium bodied and fruity and paired nicely. We had a glass of Merlot with the lamb, which was more workmanlike. Not bad, but I think there are better offerings in this price range. In fairness, they do offer an old vines zin which probably would have been a better choice. We had the fried biscuits for dessert, which were also very good, though I think could have done with more cream and less apple butter, but that's likely a personal preference thing. Service was friendly and generally very good despite being at the height of the dinner time rush. Lovely and leisurely paced meal, with three courses over about 90 minutes. Ambiance is interesting in this long narrow space (former movie hall) with exposed brick and arched ceiling. Live music was being performed by a solo accounting guitarist/singer. Look forward to returning soon, a very welcomed and long overdue addition to the Plainfield area! read more

I am genuinely surprised at all of the good reviews. I have been a handful of times ranging from when they first opened last year to now and I have not liked my food at any of my visits, along with everyone else at my table. But what's worse than the food is the extremely slow service. A couple months back we went and spent 3 hours there and certainly not by choice. We waited for everything and eventually even gave up on waiting for the dessert before we left. Tonight we waited 20 minutes for two basic cocktails. Our server was incredibly nice and apologetic, he was the highlight of the trip. But seriously. I get the feeling that they are trying too hard to be unique and fancy, so much so that there is no "normal" food for the average person to enjoy. The service needs serious work and the food is so overpriced. The ambience and cocktails are good though-- my advice is to go enjoy the vibe, get a drink, listen to music. That's it. read more

The food is good but the service is bad. First, the reception took us to the top of the restaurant, but that area was closed. Then she took us back downstairs to the main room with (the one with a movie screen) and she gave us a table. We saw the menu and ordered the food, but there was no silverware or napkins. They brought us the appetizers and we couldn't eat because we didn't have any silverware. We had to ask for the utensils to eat, and it should be noted that the service was very slow. Then they brought the food and it was excellent. That being said, they only had one type of dessert despite there being 3 on the menu. After finishing the movie, the lights turned on and many people left. At this time, the workers began to clear the tables and sweep the floors even though we were still eating, which seems rude to me and demonstrates a lack of customer service. Finally, they charged 2 extra desserts that I didn't order. At the time I wrote this review, they had not returned the money charged extra for the desserts.
