This place was walking distance from Tremont and I noticed it did not have the appearance of a typical Galveston joint. For a second, I thought I was in a swank art gallery, but then the owner welcomed us in and treated us like old friends. Beer selection is perfect with a little bit of everything. The prices were reasonable considering most places have gone up on craft beers. My group did not partake in wine but I did see there were options. The highlight of this place is definitely the atmosphere and the hospitality of the owner. I enjoyed viewing the art for sale in the bar and did not miss the tacky sea decor of most Galveston bars. As we were leaving, my friends and I thought it would be worth a weekend trip back to Galveston just to hang out at this place. Check it out even if it's for one drink! read more

I counted @ 73 different beers, from all over the US & Europe, on the menu, and they frequently add new ones to the list. Categories include: Pale Ale, IPA, Wheat & Bitter Ale, European Ale (incl. Saison, Farmhouse, Belgian, Scottish, etc.), American Ale, Stout/Porter, Lager & Spiced/Fruit/Vegetable Beers. I am happily working my way through the list. read more

When on the Island don't think you have to limit yourself to the seawall. Check out some of the newer, less sandy spots around town. This is one of those spots. We had tickets for a show at the Grand Opera House and were a bit early. So we popped in here for a beer. They have beer and wine. This is not a full bar place. There is art on the walls from some of the resident artists who live in the lofts and studios in the building where the bar is located. It's a nice space with mostly regulars at the bar. Looks like they have live music occasionally. There's a happy hour. They don't open until 4pm. Scattered tables and a couple stools at the bar. The space is minimal and industrial and - when we were there and it wasn't too packed - not too noisy. Their beer selection is very nice...lots of local beers from this part of Texas. The wine was more limited. The bathrooms are out the door and down the hall. But they were clean and you didn't feel unsafe leaving the bar to go. The bartender was a very sweet young gal. She was patient with me while I chose a beer. This may be a go to place for us when we do shows at the Opera House. Nice to start locating places off the tourist path. read more

Love the space. Very casual and friendly. I went in one day for lunch because I heard they started serving Mama Theresa's pizza. I have been hoping for a place downtown to grab a slice! Upside: pizza comes in 3 "flavors," plain cheese, pepperoni or margherita. It was yummy. You get 2 slices per order for 6.95 . Downside: they can only heat one order at a time! They need a bigger oven. And they had no to go boxes. The bartender/barista did the best she could. These were minor inconveniences, so I'll be back for more! read more

Classy but down-to-earth art gallery art-mosphere (sorry) using nearly 100% reclaimed material for tables, chairs, bar counter, etc. Chris is bartender at time of this review and has been friendly, helpful, and professional. Visiting Galveston, I had a couple of hours to kill, and this place looked too cool not to check out. The bar had an apothecary type vibe with the coziness of a coffee shop. I could totally envision doing some computer work here while sipping a beer. Proletariat has a great rotating selection of local draft beers as well as a variety of bottled beer, wine, and espresso drinks. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to make suggestions and offer samples. Overall, this experience has me looking forward to paying another visit to the Proletariat if I'm ever back in town. read more

Kind of a goofy little place, but I really liked it. It's like an art gallery, coffee shop, and craft beer bar all rolled into one. I was pretty impressed with their rotating taps too - some really solid options. Service was only okay, but they were wildly understaffed when I was there so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that one. The only food they were serving was extremely mediocre greasy pizza. Honestly the pizza did more to detract from the experience than anything. If they improved their food options I'd probably give it 5 stars. read more

On the real, y'all- this place is too legit to quit. Not only do they the gangster-est selection of beers and ciders and everything else you could want (except for the hard stuff, but you don't need that), but the artwork there is off the chain, the artists are hella cool, the bands/performers are original beyond compare, and the bartenders are the bee's knees. In addition, I have worked with the Proletariat on several projects since their inception, including a variety of charity events and fundraisers. The owners and staff are enlightening, precise, and motivated. Their energy, professionalism, and passion is awe-inspiring.
