I've had the Public House on my radar for a while now. With as many different beers as are listed on its website, who wouldn't? With its prime location in the former Canvas spot, who wouldn't? ATMOSPHERE and SERVICE: The atmosphere at the Public House is an immediate win. Regarding the nighttime aesthetic in particular, it cultivates all of the attributes that so color so many of the West Village spots I so enjoyed visiting in my early 20's. Dark, snug, sultry, smoky (sans any actual cigarette smoke). Fellow denizens exhibited more laid back and less boisterous attitudes than I've come to expect from Buffalo bars. The bar staff, at least this night, wasn't in the least bit talkative, helpful, or et cetera. It was difficult to flag one down but easy to order. My change arrived exactly. Thereafter I was on my own. No real cause for celebration here but no glaring concerns. DRINKS: What are glaring concerns are the actual drinks. It's one thing to boast X number of beers. It's another thing to simply have X number of beers. The Public House merely HAS beers. Despite the wide variation in available drafts, they all come in the same standard pint glass. My companion this evening ordered a bottled beer (The Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat, I believe) that should never be consumed directly from the bottle and had to request a glass. The draft Blue Moon I ordered arrived flat, arrived underfilled, arrived utterly without head, arrived with a raggedy orange wedge floating on its surface like some kind of carcass. Ugh. EN FIN: As of this review, I cannot speak to the quality of the food. I can't tell you about their special events. But right now, I can't find much special at all. Saturday evening a friend and I wanted to try the new "THE PUBLIC HOUSE OF BUFFALO, INC." at 1206 Hertel Ave. The place was kinda casual, kind of minimal but comfortable enough. -- We were disappointed with the menu - a small selection of salads, a couple sandwiches and maybe 1 or 2 burgers. They had a HUGE Selection of Beers - which doesn't interest me in the least. = = = I opted for the Beer Cheese Soup, which was tasty - nice fresh scallions on top and good flavor. Sadly, they had no crackers -I asked and they didn't have any. Im used to having some kind of crackers available for soup. -- I also had the Grilled Romaine Caesar Salad. It was just a big hunk of Romaine - with the inedible core still on it, a few warm bacon pieces and a tiny bit of Caesar dressing. The Romaine was even a bit tough. [pretty much a "Wedge Salad" without describing it that way]. = = = My companion had a Turkey Reuben: Turkey, Sauerkraut, and Thousand Island Dressing. There were nice layers of - - oh wait - - no layers of anything. Tiny bit of Turkey, Kraut and Dressing shoved into a wafer-thin piece of grilled bread. It was very skimpy and disappointing. The Turkey Reuben did come with fries, which were fresh and nicely seasoned, but they didn't make up for a disappointing sandwich. [We are used-to Reubens piled-high with layers of meat and other ingredients].. A disappointing experience. I don't think I'll be returning there for dinner. The bar seemed nice, and I'd grab a drink there sometime. read more

I just stopped in here with some friends and "meh" about sums it up for me. They do have a large beer selection, so if you're into brews you'll probably like this place. What I didn't like: the restaurant was so. noisy. My friends and I couldn't even hear each other and we were sitting across the table from each other. It was also a little toasty as some other people have said. The service was so-so. My sandwich order got messed up so my food didn't arrive until everyone else at the table was done eating. Also I would not recommend this place as gluten free. My friend has a severe sensitivity and when she requested a GF menu they brought one out, but it had the "seven grain salad" marked as gluten free. ...definitely incorrect. She opted out of eating because she didn't want to get sick. That being said, this place us pretty new, so hopefully they iron out the kinks-especially the noise, because it's hard to enjoy a meal with friends when you can't have a conversation. read more

Went to Public House for exclusively drinks as a group of five. We were "greeted" by a bartender who asked what we wanted. When I inquired if we could sit in any of the nearly 20 open tables without getting food, the bartender said we could sit at the bar. However, there were no seats at the bar, so we stood. When we got to the bar, the bartender gruffly demanded identification for my entire group before serving me, which is understandable because we're all between 22 and 24, but then intensely stared at me until I ascertained that he was prompting me for an order, almost as though he was angry that we were there. He could use a bit of communication skills. He also stared at us for nearly the entire time, even after we tipped the expected amount, which was odd, unfriendly, and off-putting. The drinks were reasonably priced. That gets them a star. On a strip crowded with bars, Public House doesn't really distinguish itself in any meaningful way. read more

So this bar/restaurant is down the street from my house and people kept telling me "OMG You have to go here it is so good". So one night me and some friends were day drinking on Hertel and decided well lets walk down and give it a shot. There was about 5 or 6 of us and our server was the best. she kept the drinks coming and the food came out in reasonable amount of time. If you like grilled cheese this is a good place to go and they have some amazing apps. I had a blacked chicken mac and cheese and it was really good. The food came out hot despite it being busy for a Sunday Funday. This is also a really good place to stop in for a drink. They have a wide selection of beer and they also will make pretty much any mixed drink you would like as well. read more

As teachers, it's nice to find a place that is open at 2:35 PM on Friday. Public House on Hertel (there is also one in Hamburg) is right near our school, so a bunch of us started coming here on a whim. We kept coming back for the fantastic food and Happy Hour specials. I really loved this place. The first thing you notice upon walking in is how amazing the space is--very open and quaint. The menu is simple and nothing short of FREAKING AWESOME! My gf and I each ordered a pour over & a raspberry muffin. The coffee was fantastic--rich and velvety, everything I love in a cup of coffee. And the muffin was to die for, as in, it seems like they had just came out of your grandma's oven & were served fresh. YUM! There is a lot of seating and there's also wi-fi, which is great. The only thing I didn't love was that it was a bit on the cold side, so I left my coat on the entire time I was there which was fine, but I wouldn't have wanted to stay any longer than I did (an hour maybe) because of that. Or maybe that's a tactic they employ so you don't stay super long, in which case is brilliant. All kidding aside, this place is great and I will definitely be back! read more

Walked here with my husband for dinner this week. We had tried The Public House in Hamburg previous and were not that impressed, but the location on Hertel was phenomenal. Our waitress was kind, sweet and attentive. The beer selection was extensive, and the food was delicious. Definitely get the warm goat cheese to start, served with toasted bread, honey, and sliced almonds it's a phenomenal combo. For my entree I had the Jamaican jerk chicken rice bowl and my husband had the BLT. His sandwich was massive so he took a lot home, mine was so delicious that I finished almost the whole thing. Went here with a bunch of girlfriends for dinner and drinks on a Thursday night. This place was great! Everyone got something that they wanted to drink. We were able to get a table and stay at the table for awhile without anyone bothering us. (We did ask if they needed the table. They said no!) The food menu was minimal but what they did have the cooked really well. I had the seven grain salad that I opted to add steak on top. OMG SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD! I was full and satisfied with all the delicious tastes and textures. I also had the gazpacho soup, soo tasty! The spiciness and chilled nature of the soup just hit the spot for a summer night. First, this is a very loud space. It's hard to hear what people across your table are saying when the restaurant is busy. The vibe is great, though. Friendly people both serving and dining. The food ranks with most of the other go-to burger bars in town. It's a streamlined version of Coles, Colter Bay or Bullfeathers; smaller restaurant, smaller menu, lots of beers (the current trend). Three entrees: burger; chicken wrap; grilled cheese. All came with pretty good fries. All fine bar food, and decently priced. The beer selection is plentiful but nothing really called my name. They have oysters and mussels on the menu. I love shellfish but I am just not confident enough to order that stuff in a bar. So, it's a Hertel Ave version of Elmwood standards. A friend and I went to Public House for dinner before catching a movie at the North Park Theater and we were looking for a fairly quick meal and a couple drinks. The atmosphere is nice; I can definitely see myself going there for drinks after work for happy hour. The food was rather... disappointing. I ordered a cup of the beer cheese soup, which had beef and mushrooms in it as the daily special, along with the grilled cheese sandwich. My soup came out barely lukewarm, so I asked for it to be heated up. When it came back, it was barely warmer and the bowl was very messy. My grilled cheese was burnt and, despite being a "three cheese" sandwich, it had barely any cheese on it. Thankfully my friend's chicken wrap was very yummy and the fries were also extremely tasty. All in all, it was an underwhelming experience. I probably won't eat there again, but I will definitely go back for drinks. read more

Assuming they were busy due to the soccer game we waited a bit for our drinks, and even longer for our food...but it was worth the wait. If you haven't tried the public house you're surely missing out. Beer on tap is always cold and the staff is always pleasant. The bartenders are always willing to give you a sample of any beer on tap that you have never tried before but are curious about. The tap is constantly changing but not in a rapid manner To where you go in a second time and the beer you tried last time is gone. The specials and what is on tap is always posted on a giant chalkboard written out and vibrant colors. The food is typical barfood you eat with your hands, I highly suggest trying the fries. I have gotten the pub burger which is always phenomenal, I have gotten the pub burger which is always phenomenal, I've gotten the steak burger but make sure you order it I'll level below how you like it cooked as it typically is a little over done due to the cut of meat. Let me start by saying that they offer take out- but the food is much much better when eaten in house. That being said, came in for a late dinner last night with some friends. Almost every table was full which is always a good sign for me, and the bar area was packed. I get a vibe from here that this is just a chill local bar, and with it being where it is on Hertel, it makes good sense because people can actually walk there (I have done it when the wind chill is not -20). They have a page of daily specials attached to the impressive drink/beer list at every table. I ordered the banana pepper beer cheese soup and the bacon guacamole grilled cheese from the specials. My friends got the French onion soup (some of the best in the city, in our opinion) and the chicken avocado wrap. Both sandwiches come with delicious fresh cut fries. My husband and I stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon. We were the only ones in there so we decided to take a seat at the bar. The owner Frank introduced himself, was very friendly and got us our drinks and some menu's. My husband had a draft beer, which he loves his IPA's, and they had plenty of him to choose from, I had a house made Bloody Mary. The only thing I didn't love about the Bloody Mary was the liquid smoke they use in it, so next time I would ask for it without. The menu is small but with nice options. We both decided to go with the Reuben's, I had the turkey and he had the pastrami, both were also served with hand cut fries. Both our meals were great. We are really looking forward to going back and trying more things on the menu. The prices were also very reasonable. My 2nd one star review. Dined there tonight and besides the place being clean, was not impressed. Many of the beers listed not avail. The one star is for having a cider I liked. We ordered 2 French Onion Soups (which never made it to the table) the waitress realized this as she was bringing out our order she forgot them. We ordered the Brisket with Slaw and fries and the Chicken Fritters. Well the Brisket was OK. but the Chicken Fritters were garbage. I asked when they were made, because they were hard as a rock and obviously re heated. The waitress response...TODAY? like when noon?I have worked in restaurants for years and have blogged food and I have served food. I have the patience of a saint when it comes to service and food. She did offer something else, but there was no way I was going to pay for something else. Also on the Fritters they cost me $9.95. No fries, no blue cheese. Total bill ($35.00) for 2 beers, sandwich and fries and the worst chicken i had in my life. For the first time in twenty years in the industry I left pissed off. I live in the neighborhood and will never return. Also they allow ppl dining on the patio smoke at the table, while your eating. Tried this place for the first time tonight with my man , and we both loved it . Extensive beer menu . The garlic parmesan wings were ordered on a whim , and they were so delicious that blue cheese was not even considered . The beer cheese soup, a seemingly simple soup, was packed with flavor and spicy!!! We never order stuffed peppers, because we make them so delicious at home , but oh my goodness these were a cheesy treat! This was a horrible experience!!. Loud, limited seating inside, poor food. We went on a Saturday night. We had reservations for 630pm for 6. We were seated right away, Right in front of the bar which was 3 deep. You couldn't hear your own thoughts. They have a restaurant in Hamburg. No going. I am afraid because of this experience. French onion soup was a big bowl with all broth with 6 pieces of onion 2 slices of bread and lots of cheese. To make up for no onions. Stuffed banana peppers were stuffing only. No peppers. We sent it back, but not taken off the bill because supposedly more than 50% was eaten. Kept thinking there has to be a pepper somewhere. There was not. Chicken wings are priced as market price. Who does That? More than $1 per wing and they were terrible. Hamburger was home made. Yup. Lots of grizzle and other chewy things that I am not sure what it was. Went to the bar to watch college football. Cool set up was perfect to watch a great game. Unfortunately, the game (channel) wasn't on. Apparently, changing the channel was a big issue cause the bartender said someone else was watching what was on. However, we were the only ones at the bar. We moved seats to the next closest tv. Asked to change that channel. It was like pulling teeth. Needless to say, we missed the entire game that we intended to watch. This experience was a very pleasant surprise. By the name of it, it just sounds like your typical dive bar. My date opted to have dinner and drinks at Public House, so I figured I'd give it a try. When I walked in, most of the tables were filled as it was the middle of dinner time (say about 6:30) and you had a mix of groups of friends and families eating there, while others were sitting at the bar. I was glad it wasn't that loud of a venue, but perhaps it can get pretty loud and crowded during later hours. The drink and dinner menus have fairly wide selection. I opted for the grilled cheese entree, which ended up being super good! Kudos to the cook for not making it greasy either. The fries are also delicious and have the right amount of seasoning. Drinks - I really enjoyed my moscow mule (okay, I had 3 of them!) and my date was happy with her corona. Most importantly, our waitress was very attentive throughout the experience. She regularly checked up on us to make sure we were being well taken care of. I will definitely pay another visit, either for a low-key dinner or to grab drinks with a few friends! :D read more
