Not really into the bar scene unless the food menu is banging. We sat at the corner of the counter seats because those are obviously the best seats in the house, unless you are in a group. I convinced him to check out this joint with me because I couldn't help to notice their fancy hot dogs and truffle popcorn. This is legit bar food - to me at least! He came here before without me and didn't recall how he felt about it but I'm sure he'll remember how great it was this time since I was there! I was debating between the kimchee or the banh mi and the bartender agreed to those two options being the most popular and his favorite. He ordered the kimchee and I had the banh mi veggie dog. Unfortunately, he ordered a meat dog so I didn't get to try the kimchee but it looked fabulously dressed. I'm not sure which brand of veggie dogs they use but it wasn't the ones that taste like cardboard. I also appreciated the warm, toasty hot dog buns. The banh mi sauce was a tad heavy on mayo but still great for bar food. Unless all bars have good food? I always assumed it was just frozen then deep fried or chips with dip. Seeing truffle on the menu was definitely bookmark worthy. I don't usually drink. It's quite rare that I drink but wow you must check out their drink selection! I was debating between the matcha, yeah I was surprised there was a matcha beverage in Knoxville, and a cool mix of sour beer, mint, ginger, raspberry and hibiscus. Doesn't that sound so different? Well, it was by far the best mixed drink I've had. Of course I had the Asian glow when I wasn't even halfway done but it was so good! I had to finish it and did. Is this why people go to dates at a bar? Mixed drinks like these are so yummy! I never thought I would appreciated alcohol. I've been missing out all these years! The music is low, there are tons of different types of seats ranging from tall tables to short coffee tables to outdoor patio seating. Places like the Peter Kern Library, Oliver Royale, PostModern Spirits, Central Depot, and The Public House are each doing their own take on elegant cocktails, and boy is it welcome. Before I update this review, let me just say that I still really like The Public House. I dig the crowd, the huge outdoor patio, and the chill vibe that this place is all about. What I don't dig as much is that the last couple of times that I've gone, the bartenders have been less than stellar. I know they get busy and I'm not looking for exceptional service...just good service. I hate going to places that make me feel like I'm an inconvenience to them just by being there. I certainly don't mind waiting my turn in line to order, but I hate being greeted with unwarranted snark (and not the good kind). The hasn't been good either the last couple of times. The popcorn has been overly salted. And the hot dogs have been stale. The pulled pork on my hot dog was so dry and flavorless. All of these make me really sad. I still like this spot, but it's for different reasons than it was a couple of years ago. The drink menu is still pretty decent, though I wish they had a few more styles of beer. I'm still going to keep coming back, but I mourn the loss of The Public House of a few years ago. read more

I visited recently for a work happy hour. This place is a little hard to get to for newbies. I know my GPS took me on a wild goose chase through some sketchy areas. However, the bar space is updated and cool. The patio is large and nice and quite private. The drink list is impressive, although the prices are as high as any larger city. My Manhattan was well-balanced and tasty. I tried someone's cheesy popcorn and it was good, but I didn't eat, so this is a boozy review only. Bravo though for offering all your hotdog options as veggie dogs The service was friendly, but pretty darned slow. I believe in watching TV on your own time in your own home. A TV in a public space is only a distraction from conversation!!! So, if you need a TV to entertain you, stay home or go to the billions of places already cable ready for you in this town. In addition to a full bar, The Public House also offers house made infused liquors using fruit, vegetables, and spices!! I LOVE the tequila infused with cucumber and jalapeno, served on the rocks with a squeeze of lime it's delicious!!! They also have vodka infused with Myers lemon and mint, or with kumquat and pepper. They have a great little bar menu which offers unusual bar food...like White Truffle Popcorn, Adobe Boiled Peanuts, Blue Cheese Dip, Smoked Trout Dip, Beet Pesto, as well as meats and cheeses. It is a cool space, but if you like a lot of variety in beer, especially local beer, it's probably not the place for you. Also, I love that I can always find parking here. If you're looking to accommodate a group, there are tables that can be pushed together. No one seems to mind. If you're looking for a date spot, it's a toss up. It's dimly lighted and feels cozy, but the noise level is high. Try the patio, though. Finally, if you're looking for a quick drink, this probably isn't the place (depending on the time of day). I have found that the wait time can be very slow. It's understandable, due to volume, but it's still noted. A final note: for ME, this is a destination and not a stop on an Old City bar crawl. Drinks are really tasty. IF anyone acknowledges you as a human who wants to order. There are always at least 4+ people behind that bar and I consistently get the worst possible service here. Literally stood at the bar last night, holding my wallet, for over 5 minutes while the bartenders dilly-dallied or acted like they were walking in our direction, only to turn around just as I thought they might care we wanted to order something. My favorite bar in Knoxville, TN. Such a low key place. Last time I was there a book club meeting was going on at one table, a crochet group at another & a group of middle age lawyers enjoying a pint at another table. You will run into all sorts of folk here. Most people are of the artistic genre and probably listen to great music but it doesn't create an intimidating aura. I love that there are no TVs and the motto of the bar is pretty much, "Let's be nice to each other and enjoy a drink." I have tried numerous cocktails on the menu and they are all tasty. I love the infused vodkas they make in house and my husband is always pleased with the tap selection which changes periodically to include lots of micro-brews and a few staples. I ordered a cocktail that called for fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and they were out so they went next door and got some for me! I was amazed, you know it's few and far between that you get great service anymore and Public House has fantastic service! It is a great place to get a flight of 3 bourbons, find favorite, get 3 more, that favorite and 2 others until you narrow it down to the best! No better way to find your "go to" bourbon. You have to try one or two of their gourmet hot dogs. Unusual toppings. Delicious. The gourmet popcorn is a great snack with your drinks but is very expensive for the amount you get. Small but flavorful and strong. $8- a little more than I would like to pay for the size but still a pretty good value for what you get. Nice atmosphere- long bar, some high top tables, multiple group bench seating areas and a nice looking patio (tables, twinkling lights). Not too busy on a Thursday night around 9. It had been a rainy day though- maybe that kept some of the college crowd home? I wish I had been hungry- the bar snacks looked awesome.. This is the type of place I look for in a bar. They've got good all-round drink selection with a handful of craft beers, decent wines, and 'classic' and 'signature' cocktails. The atmosphere is dimly-lit, modern, and not too loud (no live bands! Yay!). The building itself is spacious and clean. The best part, though, is the crowd. Because of its location off of Magnolia Ave a block or two from the Old City, it keeps out the extreme 'partiers' found wandering around the ever-increasing dance scene of Central Avenue in the Old City. What a great place!! I went here last night for a meeting and drinks and I don't have a single complaint. The place is gorgeous. Their bar is this AMAZING concrete that has pieces of beer glass embedded in it and then smoothed over. An owner(?) told me they saved the glass for a while to do that and it really looks incredible. It's a nice, modern, bougie hipster hang out near Tennessee Valley Bikes. There is ample parking just next to the building and they have an outdoor area which I did not check out. I didn't register than they don't have TVs until I read the other review, but it's an excellent point because it really makes a difference. I found this a great place to meet people from drinks and conversation. There is no live music, so you can just TALK. I hate going to a place to talk only to have a band overpower your conversation. They also have Wifi, which is handy because I needed my computer for our meeting. As far as booze and food, there was a great variety of beers and wines - you can get bottles and by the glass. Good variety of hipster beers. I myself had a Sweetwater Blue. Their snacks menu (no full meals) is distinct too. We had the trout dip with bread which was great - fresh, with big chunks of fish on rustic bread. They had really neat options - chips with blue cheese dip, meat and cheese plates and other choices. Some really good friends took me there and somehow i never made it back until recently. Great drinks, quick service, wonderful environment.
