I remember Tony from when he worked at Capitol Lounge, so after hearing he had opened his own place I had to check it out. I've been back about three times since then, and all my experiences have been positive. If you're lucky enough to catch Tony behind the bar, he's as great as I remember him being- maybe even funnier and surlier! He had a skilled younger guy named Paul working for him, but sadly I've learned that Paul is no longer working there. They have some unique beers in addition to your generic American staples, and the food is perfect and greasy- if they haven't run out! The cheeseballs are a nice touch. Keep in mind this is a small place, so it can be an ordeal to get your drinks if it is super crowded, but the bartenders will do their best to get to you. This place stands alone on H Street as the classic neighborhood joint. read more

I like Toki next door-they endorse this place and send their clients to wait for their tables since they share liquor license. I just got kicked out of here by Russel (the bartender) because I'm not drinking. First of all, the bar was empty and it's lunchtime. Secondly, I was sent here by the hostess at Toki after I told her I can't drink. She said it's OK, you can just order a soda or water. So I went anyways. Thirdly, I'm pregnant and cannot drink right now! I told Russel that too and he didn't care, he said I can't stay here. Wow, I'm still in disbelieve!!! 3.25 stars. I do like the boxing theme over at the Pug, but overall, is just does not fully grab my attention. Maybe that is part of the allure of this place; it works fine as a dive bar. But the drinks were a bit more expensive than I expected and the crowd was a bit less diverse than I hoped. I have only been a few times so maybe I just have gone on off nights. I would give it a few more tries, and it is certainly an acceptable bar to polish off a few beers after a show at either the Rock N Roll Hotel or Palace of Wonders or after a nice meal at Granville Moore's. read more

If you're looking for foofy drink or anything fancy, move on next door to Fruit Bat or Church and State. You go to the Pug for the beer or simple mixed drink. I love this little irish-ish pub A.-Because it reminds me of the bars in Boston when I was at BU and my professor would buy the first round and then we would get wasted on Alabama Slammas. And B- Because though they really only serve beer and whiskey they make some kind of girly drink for me and find a pretty glass and flirt and razz me while my husband gets wasted. We usually are the only black folk in there except for the neighborhood wino and my overly pretentious cousin-think Carlton. Because the bar keeps are so cool they set the tone. We drove all the way to pub from Wheaton to watch the game after reading positive reviews about this place. When we walked in there was a heavy set bartender that wasn't friendly from the beginning, he kept telling us most seats were taken whenever we tried to grab a seat even though the bar seemed not that crowded (maybe around 5 or 6 people there) finally we went across the other side where there were practically no one and before we sat down he asked us very rudely "are you going to be ordering drinks? If not you can't just sit in." Me and my fiancé are professional looking African Americans (but regardless of how we look, he has no right to ask us that), I normally don't like to associate any incident with race but I know for sure all the white people that were in there (which is pretty much every one there) weren't asked the same question that we were asked. My fiancé got furious and told him we haven't even been here 1 minute plus we didn't get a chance to properly sit down, he started saying "I'm sorry " when he saw how upset he got. To start with his apologies didn't seem genuine besides there was absolutely no way we would sit there after being treated like this. We left there and drove to virginia to our usual place "the champs" in Arlington, where we were welcome, very diverse crowd and enjoyed the game. I will never go back to this place even if you pay me! If you are looking for diverse crowd with good service I would not recommend the Pug. read more

This place does what it seems to set out to- be a friendly neighborhood bar. Nothing too special about it, just folks hangin out who live in the area grabbing a cheap beer and maybe playing some pool. I'm not saying the cheap beer is amazing or the theme isn't a little overdone, but it works just fine for what it is. And what it usually is for me is a place to grab a quick drink while I'm waiting for my table at the Brickyard which is practically next door. Wouldn't come out of my way to stop in at the Pug, but surely step in for a drink if you're in the area. read more

Conveniently located in the same building as Toki Underground, The Pug is a great place to go if you're waiting for a table at Toki and don't want to go far. It's a dive bar but with its own character and charm. Staff is friendly, plenty of beer, and decently priced, why else would you complain? I didn't try any food, since I was saving room for Toki. Definitely my type of place: good beers, good prices, good sandwiches and cheeseballs! I stopped here pre-wedding weekend and met up with a bunch of my friends from college; one of which who bartends here and the one who was getting married. The place is super mellow with an eclectic group of people. The sandwich took care of my drinking hunger while the cheesey poofs just added to it! But really, its a good place to grab a beer and tends to get more crowded later in the night so if you want to play pool, get a there a little early. Unfortunately, I don't know much about DC but this is definitely a cool spot. read more

On Sunday 8/28, after the non-apocalyptic Hurricane Irene, I had a hankering for Ramen. So I hit up H Street for Toki Underground. So of course that means I had to wait things out at the Pug.They had "Les Rials" as their white wine selection again. So Caldy T. and I went for it. And guess what. They let us buy the bottle! And they gave us an ol' pitcher of ice to keep it chillin'! But the negotiation process for the price of the bottle was Epic. It involved two BTs and a managerial type person. All of that manpower (yes, they were all men) to come up with the correct price for the whole bottle, which they've apparently never sold at once before. I love the Pug. read more

Finally wandered over to the H Street bars and restaraunts, and was so happy to find The Pug! It is so nice to find a place close to my house that actually feels neighborhoody. My personal favorite touch would be the cheeseballs on the counter and the random Slim Jims that were handed out throughout the night. This place reminds me a bit of Trusty's on Penn. Which isn't a bad thing, but that said, it means it doesn't really stand out. I went on Saturday night as part of a pub crawl. It was late and it just seemed to have a relaxed atmosphere of people who wanted to have a drink late on a Saturday night, without having to "go out". I would go back though but I can't say I'd recommend it over the other places I've been to on H Street. I will say I think they did say if you found the bar on yelp it probably wasn't for you. read more

The Pug haz cheeseballs. Buckets and buckets of Utz cheeseballs... The Pug is a bar for people who like bars, real bars, gritty neighborhood dive bars, and it plays all of these roles well. It is one of the original Atlas district bars, and thankfully remains one of the least pretentious and most unspoiled. It's a regular bar in every sense: it's kinda dirty, the crowd is fun and unpretentious, the bartenders are gruff but pleasant, the beer selection is adequate (and includes Schlitz in cans-always a plus!), the liquor selection is basic, its full but not sardine-packed, sports are playing on the television, and the seats are always just a little bit sticky. And they give out bowls of free cheeseballs (which would be the appetizer for my last meal on earth)! And they have a brunch, which I hear is good, but have never been to. I love the Pug. Aside from Palace of Wonders, which I go to for the entertainment and eye candy, the Pug is my favorite H St bar. I only hope the crowds that are beginning to take over H St don't decide to invade The Pug next. read more

I go a lot, and I will continue to do so, but 2 stars needs to be given. While I very much appreciate the Pug's concept, and H street basically has no other approachable, non-pretentious bars, the Pug's non-pretentiousness actually rises to a level of pretentiousness all on it's own. It's a little too cool for itself. For example, have a damn HH. Your beer prices aren't that cheap where you can forgo one. Also, and I know it's a dive bar, but it smells in there. Just mop the floors once a week with some bleach guys. This place could grow on me. It is pretty much a friendly neighborhood bar. The crowd is friendly and there's no cover. But I wish they would get a better selection of draft beers. They have crappy Budweiser and crappy attempts by Budweiser to convince people they can do craft brewing such as American Ale and Bare Knuckle Stout. The food is nothing special. The Pug was the center of my existence for a few months when I first moved to DC. The bartenders were my family, the boxing memorabilia my home dcor, and the beer and cheeseballs my fuel and food. The bartenders at the Pug are the best. Tony and Jim are like the uncles I never had, and they always make sure my beer is cold and my cheeseball bowl is full--and occasionally offer me some free shots/drinks. The Pug doesn't serve food (except for a couple choices of George Foreman paninis and Hot Dogs that are a bit over-priced). The beer selection is pretty good and the neighborhood regulars are great. The bar just started serving draft beer a couple months ago and they often run out after the weekend. It is a great place to go on a weeknight for a couple drinks. On the weekends it gets a bit busy and cramped and loses a lot of its appeal (in my opinion). In all, the Pug is THE neighborhood bar on H St. read more

This is a nice dive bar that sits below Toki Underground. It has a friendly staff that helps warm up the coziness of this place. My girlfriend and I waited here for our seats at Toki to be called. They even provided a generous portioned panini sandwich that we snacked on before going up. It tasted pretty good too. I've only ever been here for the brunch, but I have to say it's one of the best deals and yummiest brunches I've ever had in DC. They have $10 bottomless mimosas, bloody marys, or screw drivers. In addition to that, the food is INCREDIBLE! I always get the bourbon French toast, which is cooked up right in front of you on the makeshift kitchen on the bar. They also have fresh bourbon laced whipped cream that is to die for (yum!). Boyfriend usually gets the steak and eggs, or the American breakfast. Their homemade hash is delicious, with bits of sausage and hashbrowns. They make homemade white gravy too. I keep coming back here for brunch, even though it's forever away from where I live, and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap friendly place to nurse a hangover on a Sunday morning. read more

Not recommended. The waitress totally flipped a shit that my friend had a non-US license though. Probably the cheapest bar on H street. Stopped in to watch a world cup game. The beer selection was good, including about 6 or so taps and a bunch of cans and bottles. Even had tall boy Oberons which I didn't realize existed. Definitely a dive bar with all kinds of crap on the wall (mostly soccer stuff!!!!) but it was clean and welcoming. read more

The Pug was a good time. It is a hole in the wall with flair kind of place. Decorated with boxing memorabilia we sat in a comfy booth and read the trivia cards at the table. Location, location, location.....when I ended up here while waiting for a table at Toki Underground (conveniently located right above The Pug), I'm willing to bet at least 80%, if not more, people there were waiting on the same thing. The Pug is no frills, divey, cash only. There is an ATM inside. It kind of reminded me a bit of Jack's on East Carson Street in Pittsburgh but with better draft selections and less confrontational drunkards. The Ponzi IPA from Atlas I had was quite tasty. They also had several can options, including Bold Rock Cider. They have a vending machine selling everything from cell phone chargers (at $6 that's not a bad buy if you're in a pinch) to chickpea burritos (I might question that purchase though). There is some seating if you can snag a table, while the bar stools fill up quickly. Staff was friendly, prices were a-ok, and when our table at Toki was ready, all we had to do was walk up a flight of stairs. This is definitely not someplace I would return to on a regular basis, but it fit the bill as a place to play out the waiting game for our Toki table on a Friday night. read more

I need to come here a few more times before deciding if this is the right "dive" for me on H st... I've been here twice, once on a weekend where it's butt crowded with people and it's hot and stinky. Went here again on a Thurs night for late night drinks and it was surprisingly crowded. Not a fan of $7 dc brau on tap, but a fan of $5 dc brau cans.. They have great deals on your typical morning beer-sh*t brands: natty light, natty boh, PBR, etc... ($5 for tall boys). I wish we could sit at the bar b/c it's awkward to sit on the rando seats facing the bar. You end up staring at the booty of people's that are hovering by the bar... and trust me, it's not sexy booty. The crowd is diverse and bartenders are fast and efficient. Be aware that they are die hard MD fans, so if you wear any other team paraphernalia, be ready to trash talk/defend. read more

Five draft lines that include the aforementioned Afligem and Bare Knuckle Stout. Food is pretty much limited to panini sandwiches, but you don't really come here to eat (although they do have free cheese balls!) They also have Rock'em Sock'em robots!
