I think the bar's seating (indoors and outdoors) is inviting. I see lines for coffee in the morning. There's a sizeable residential neighborhood surrounding this place. Those folks are lucky ducks; they can just roll out and walk to Zeke's. Stopped in and got a cup of one of my favs: Tell Tale Dark. Plus, a ham & cheese croissant. Both are top notch. Decent spot in a prime location, but the beer can be a little forgettable compared to some of the other breweries in the city.

Beer you want to check out: Raised by Wolves - they call this a dry-hopped pale ale. It's not quite an IPA but in that ballpark. I would call this their flagship beer given the availability at retailers in the DMV. Great tropical/citrus flavors and nose and only 5% ABV. Håxan - a 7% ABV Scandinavian porter brewed with an assortment of roasted malts and oats. Super tasty with great coffee and dark chocolate notes. Service is excellent. Nice small tasting room vibe. Nice outdoor seating as well. Limited street parking is available. Note that they don't have food here like the Shaw Brewpub location. read more

Finally checked this place off my list, and it did not disappoint! Wandered in on a random Thursday and lucked out--it was locals' night with happy hour all day. Yes, please! Loved that all the prices already include tax and tip. So simple and convenient. Their beer list isn't huge, but everything's brewed on-site, which makes it feel super local and fresh. The bartender was awesome and let me sample a couple of IPAs before I ordered. Both were great but totally different, so I kinda wanted both! They've got wine and cocktails too. If you're into spicy drinks, try the margarita--it wasn't my things but it was super spicy AND strong. The vibe is super chill and cute, with fun art all over the place. My wife and I came here last Saturday as part of a beer crawl with her University of Washington alumni association. I was at the Shaw location which has more seating (at least inside) and serves food several years ago. This is the production site that only serves beer and is closed Monday through Thursday. The place is small and most seating is outside. The interior is quite cool and funky though. The beer is good and the Lil' Wit Hefeweizen and the Love Games Gose we're our favorites at 4.9 on Untappd. Only docking a star because none of the beer is a perfect 5 and some were in the lower 4s which is below average for craft beer for us. i was looking for the right proper brewery restaurant since they have the best burger, beer and fried cheese curds in the area. the problem here is the 920 Girard location isnt the restaurant. so confusing. i had to reroute to the restaurant some 12 minutes away. This was my first time at Right Proper Brewing. As my Uber dropped me off I got a very hipster vibe. Everyone was outside and seemed very chill. They had some picnic tables and other places to sit. The weather was perfect so we sat outside. Inside was very fun! The art on the walls grabbed my attention...very Insta-worthy. I also saw a sign that said they are fully solar powered which is very awesome and respectable. Around the corner from the bar was a back area which was reserved for a birthday party!! So they have event space as well. In the bathroom there was a piano...which is unique and cool. They offered tours at 3 different times. What I am trying to say is, the place had their shit together and their brand is on point. I loved it. I drank the beer "Diamonds, Fur Coat, and Champagne". I'm not a huge fan of their brewpub, I thought it was too much about the vibe and not enough about the beer. I never had the food there though. This place...This place is F******g magic. It literally is like the inverse of their Shaw location. Here the beer takes center stage because, well, that's all they have. Baron Corvo was delicious, so much so that I had it three times. They don't have food, but they have a menu book and we ended up eating there while drinking even more. Raised by Wolves? A delicious Pale ale that went well with greasy Chinese food, or a few minutes afterwards, shame. The Kodachrome Dream(ing) their version of the Radler was literally something that my wife drank multiple glasses of, because she's not a beer fan but the light, citrus-y flavor won her over. You know what else I love about this place? Everything is fun and tongue-in-cheek, Right Proper actually has some personality that I didn't really notice at their brewpub. The fried chicken sandwich. That's really all you need to know. Ok, maybe the fries, too. Oh, and the Brussels sprouts with chili sauce. And if the shishito peppers are on the menu, get those too. And that's just the food. Beers? Amazing. There is usually a rotation, and I go for the lighter lager style beers or the darker porters. Everything in between is amazing, too. After all, brewing beer is what these guys do. We've been regulars for years and recently went to get the beloved fried chicken sandwich and a light, crisp beer during these COVID times. Social distancing was fully observed, as well as full-time mask and glove wearing by the staff and contact tracing precautions. We were the only people there, and were able to sit on the patio which is set up with tents and ropes to protect from the sun and the public. I should note this was my first time back in a public space since March, so I was honestly super nervous but their abundance of caution and process explaining put me totally at ease. It was great. I love you, Right Proper. You keep doing your thing. Your fried chicken sandwich is just my absolute favorite and you are, too. read more

FINALLY. I moved to DC from Denver in 2012, and have been seriously missing good beer almost ever since. The DC beer scene that's emerging is really great, and Right Proper is at the forefront. Not only do they have a solid selection of beers, but this location has a totally different crowd and vibe than their Shaw brewpub location does. They have the same style of cool artwork (my personal favorite is a lion killing a dentist. RIP Cecil) and quirky details the Shaw location does (piano in the potty!) but maybe because it's a little farther out of the way, or because not as many people have heard of it yet, it's not as crowded which is AMAZING. The bartenders and tour leaders really know their stuff, and I loved hearing all about the thinking behind different beers and crafting techniques. It looked like they were gearing up to do a few events (yoga, a female brewers tap takeover) and I hope they continue to do so in the future! read more

Tasty beer, cool atmosphere, and in a low-key area of Brookland. I've been here twice this summer. There was live music once which was pretty cool. The decor of this place is awesome- I'm talking about meerkats on the wall and pianos in the bathroom. A very unique place. Very nice brewery. It's a little off the beaten path... Came here for a 30th birthday and definitely has a cool vibe. They have a nice outside sitting area, but it was also really cool to be in the back and see where all the beer is brewed.. among the kegs etc. I had the Astral Weeks which was actually really good! Also a great spot because you can bike to it and it's not far off the metropolitan branch trail (and they have a bike rack). The beers and service were great as well. They have rotating special beers in addition to the classic favs. There were 3 picnic tables in the shade on the porch along with a couple of barrels and stools for all of your social distanced outdoor gathering needs. I really enjoyed my afternoon at Right Proper because their beers are so exceptional. Made in massive, old-style (foeder) wooden fermentation vessels or tanks, that showcases wild yeasts, these beers demonstrate complexity and taste. All of the sours, were phenomenal - the Jammy Smears and Corn Rigs and Barley Rigs were standouts. The Coffee Haxan Porter was truly amazing. An added feature is the edgy artwork on the walls featuring animals feasting on humans. No kidding. Go and see for yourself. ...and where else can you go that has a piano in the bathroom. The brewery has an area for games and kids are welcome. The beer selections change frequently, so this is one of the few breweries that is worth a return trip real soon. The outdoor seating area, although minimal, was super cute and cozy. It's covered and has rocks as the surface with some picnic tables/benches. Excellent tap room, engaging and friendly staff, and a solid tour-not much can get better than the experience at Right Proper! Located in a residential area in Brookland, this spot is perfect to spend a few hours in before you ultimately get hungry and need food (unless one of the food trucks on Saturdays is there). There are infinitely more options than the Brew Pub in Shaw and dare I venture to say the staff here is friendlier and all about the beer (unlike my experience in Shaw). I decided to get a flight of four, and little did I know, since we ordered separately, my drinking buddy ordered the same exact flight! Next time I'll have to plan that better so I get to try more. I tried the Being There, White Bicycles, Diamonds/fur coat/champagne, and Hyperborea. The descriptions given on the menu were very acuarte in terms of flavor profiles. * Being There: Kellerbier, very grassy and crisp with a dry finsih, very balanced between malt and hops. I ended up getting a pint of this to take on the tour. *White Bicycles: Rustice Witbier, candied lime-very limey, leaning towards sour. Good in a taster but I couldn't do a whole pint. *Diamonds/Fur coats/champagne: Aromatized Berliner Weisse, VERY tart. This was only 3.8% ABV (Almost makes it at the 3-2 stores-you in Kansas know what I'm talking about!) but the most difficult to finish for me. I'm a trooper though and made it through the extreme sourness. *Hyperborea: Nordic farmhouse ale-VERY smokey, hints of fruit. I'm not big on smokey beers so while I enjoyed the taster, I wouldn't be able to drink a full glass. What I wanted to try and didn't get to: EVERYTHING else! Especially the Raised by Wolves, described as juicy, fruity, and hoppy. Tours are offered 2, 4, and 6pm Saturdays and Sundays. We went on the 6pm Saturday tour with Keyan (sp?) and he was also the one serving us up our tasters before hand. Very engaging and entertaining on the tour, and knowledgeable when it came to questions about the brewing process. Tours are free so if you're already there, why not? Although the tour was a nice bonus, the beers are clearly the reason to come here! Also, while we were there, Stella's PopKern popcorn was there and we were able to sample all the flavors that were not already sold out and bought a small spicy chipotle cheddar to snack on with our brews. The location is equidistant from RI Ave metro and Brookland, so pick your poison. Surprisingly, the walk wasn't too bad even on the cold evening we had this past Saturday. Fantastic tap room & beer! Seriously the tap room is large and beautiful. The staff are friendly and attentive and their beers are phenomenal. I tried all of the current brews on tap and my favorite is their porter...solid solid porter I took home a growler (the litmus test). What's probably even better than the great beer are the GREAT prices. 2$ per 4oz taster so you can try them all without breaking the bank. Also growler fills are extremely fair priced. I've never been to the shaw brewpub the the atmosphere of the Girad location is excellent. There's no food but, they usually have a scheduled food truck outside so you can get your munchies on! You can also bring SNACKS! The pups aren't allowed in the tap room but there is a nice outdoor area when the weather is fair. They also do trivia nights and have a host of other events that happen. read more

We really enjoyed the venue. The art is pretty memorable. Service was good too. The tap list was small.., and then some of the kegs had also blown before we arrived so there weren't many beers to sample that night. There was a pretty good porter, but nothing else that stood out. I'm so happy this location exists because it is so much more laid back than the Shaw Right Proper! First of all, there's actually parking available and the inside of the brewery wasn't crowded when I visited on a Sunday evening. There's a lot of cool decor throughout the space, and the bathroom is a must see (trust me on this!). They also do brewery tours here, so make sure to plan visits around that if a tour is of interest. The beer itself is really interesting! I'm more of a wine person, so I have my go to when it comes to beer, but I ordered a flight and enjoyed the various tastes rather than just the Hefeweizen which I generally prefer. When reviewing a brewery you really have to consider two things: the beer and the service. At this place I honestly couldn't complain about either; both were extremely good! I tried a few different beers with the coworkers of the decent variety they had and enjoyed them all. Some were too bitter for my tastes but that's a style thing and nothing against the establishment. I suppose the only reason I can't give this spot a 5/5 is simply because while I had a good time and good beer I wasn't wowed by anything (other than the piano in the restroom!). I've been to some spots that blew me away with either variety or quality, but this really just felt like a good time and nothing exceptional. Love that Right Proper has been able to expand! The production facility has only been open a short time, but it seems wildly popular. We came here for a private tour & tasting (something you can inquire about on their website). We arrived right when they opened and within about 15 minutes the small tasting room was packed. Our tour was awesome. We were lucky enough to be lead by their head brewer Nathan, who totally let us geek out. After our 30 minute tour, we did a tasting of one of their more popular options and 2 of their newer, different styles. The beer options are mostly the same as the brewpub (no guest taps though) and the staff is , of course, top notch. If youre a fan of the artwork at the Shaw location, definitely check this place out as all the artwork is new. Food trucks operate here on the weekends, and theyre talking about possibly building a patio. If you enjoy the original RP, check this place out. And dont forget to check out the bathroom. An odd statement, I know, but youll understand once you get there. read more

We live in the neighborhood and Right Proper is exactly the place you would want to have within walking distance - Brookland is very lucky to have them! The beers are delicious and the selection rotates often enough to give you variety, the atmosphere is perfect. If you're not a beer fan, they often have a special seasonal drink or two - part beer, part sweet mixer - that provides a nice alternative. My mother isn't a beer fan, so when I brought her to Right Proper she tried a flight and was able to find something she liked. If you would rather a night in, you can get different sizes of growlers of whatever beers they have on tap. And Captain Cookie is now across the street - fresh baked cookies are only a few steps away! Food is not prepared/served on site (per DC regulation), but they do sell flavored beef jerky (can't remember the brand name) over the counter. On most Saturday afternoons there is a food truck or restaurant selling food, and you can bring your own snacks or order delivery to the brewery. They do events, including trivia nights - check their Facebook page wall for the latest. Saturdays can be pretty busy. Early Sunday afternoons are perfect for sipping a beer and catching up on your reading. The wall mural is macabre and phenomenal - zoo animals breaking out and exacting their revenge. Every time I visit I notice some new detail, and our DC visitors always comment on it. Right Proper recently expanded their hours and installed picnic tables out front. Dogs are welcome on the patio (not inside) and you can ask at the bar for a bowl of water for your pup. I understand an awning for the lawn area is in the works too. There is enough street parking - if you can't find a space in the immediate vicinity on Girard Street, just head north on 9th or 10th St NE. The brewery is about 6 blocks walk south from the Brookland metro - very doable. Note that 9th Street NE doesn't have a sidewalk for about half the way and isn't well lit, so if that's a concern, walk on 10th instead. I've never had a problem with security in Brookland, but of course be sensible and take precautions. read more

Wheeeee! Another amazing brewery visited on vacation. So... we ended up trying everything on the menu (thankful for the flight pours option). Lots of farmhouse styles and tasty hoppy pale ales.. we came right when they opened and the bartender warned us that the crowdedness factor was a bit of a crapshoot. It could be a handful of regulars or a full tour bus could pull in the parking lot. While we were there, business was just steady, thankfully so we could chat with the bartender about the business, the neighborhood, and D.C. in general. I am not a beer drinker... usually. Right Proper beer changes that. This gorgeous little gem is tucked away in my new neighborhood and I am THRILLED. This is a small little brewery, with a great open inside space that's pleasantly decorated, and lovely semi-shaded little outside area with picnic tables. The vibe here is always relaxed and friendly. Dogs are welcome and it seems kids are too. Normally, the kid factor would make me balk, but of the three times I have been here, every single child has been as relaxed as the adults, playful but supervised and adorably engaging. Now to the important stuff-- the beer! Diamonds Fur Coats Champagne is without a doubt one of my favs. It's light, tart and has a great citrus flavor. The cider is drier and less sweet than many others, so perfectly refreshing (AND you can drink more than 1 in a single sitting!). My IPA loving friends really enjoy Ravaged by Wolves. One of my favorite breweries. Their take on fermented beers is so enjoyable. You can really chew on so many of their beers. The last time I went I had the Jammy Smears, which was a berliner weisse with cherry puree. Absolutely incredible. The best sour I've ever had and I've had dozens. The standards are great too, Raised by Wolves, White Bicycles and Baron Corvo are not to be missed. We held a volunteer appreciation Happy Hour here a couple of weeks ago and it was a perfect location. The beer selection is diverse and available in half-pours, allowing you to taste a good variety. They also allow you to order in outside food, which perfectly suited our limited budget. (Dominos pizza!) The wall art is very unique and provides a fun atmosphere. Though, I'm not sure how I feel about the piano in the bathroom. Will definitely be back here for future events, particularly when it's warm enough to enjoy the patio. read more
