This place is legend in Greencastle. It's basically the place parents take their college kids when they're visiting them during the weekend. There is a very nice buffet with a large salad bar and many hot items as well. The dessert area is not to be missed either. There's a regular menu too, but I. Oh my goodness! I'm not in home for dinner tonight..... When I asked around for dinner suggestions, a few people recommended a pizza/wine bar. I did look it up online and it looked nice enough, but I'm not a real big fan of fancy pizza, and I don't do wine at all. I did some further searching and found The Putnam Inn. I walked there in less than 10 minutes and was absolutely dee-lighted!!! The buffet had great salad fixings including pickled beets (LOVE), coleslaw (LOVE), potato salad (LOVE)......all things I don't often have at home. Mashed potatoes, baked beans, Mac and cheese....oh, and I couldn't resist two fried chicken wings. A tiny square of cheesecake and about 1/4 cup of swirl ice cream (neither of which I finished) made for just-enough-food. I don't much care about 'ambiance' when I'm hungry. I was more impressed with the number of staff who kept cleaning up and replenishing each station than I would have been with dim lights and soft music! The hostess who seated me was wonderful. She even shared with me some of her favorite dishes (we both have a penchant for potatoes ) Amanda was my server and she was prompt and attentive without being at all overbearing. I went with my extended family For my cousins birthday. We had a great time because it was an adventure for us. We traveled from Kokomo to Green Castle. The staff were very welcoming. Honesty because we are African American We were a little unsure because some towns in Indiana can be unwelcoming and uncomfortable in 2025. The food was good. I ordered the Shrimp Poboy and it was very delicious. My favorite part was the sauce and the little piece of this thick and crispy bacon. Good American food buffet which is getting harder to find these days. Usually go Thursday nights. Always start with a nice little salad. Love the ranch dressing here. They have BBQ ribs, pulled pork, and brisket on this night, which I usually get some of. Fried chicken, fried fish and chicken noodles good too. I like their slider cheeseburgers as well. Large selection of hot veggies including mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, mixed veg, tomatoes & zucchini, mac & cheese, corn pudding, and several others that rotate around. Although many of them tasted as if they had been purchased from a store such as Walmart (which I don't have an issue with), the issue is they tasted as if they were purchased days prior; didn't taste fresh. We wanted to give it a try despite some negative things we have heard. I was a little leery about trying the seafood buffet that they have on Friday and Saturday nights . Most of the crab legs we have tried in Indiana have been lackluster to say the least. When I say this place blew us away, I am not kidding! It is a local restaurant in Greencastle. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and seated right away. There is plenty of room in the restaurant and it is clean. The staff is friendly and kept checking with us and refilling drinks and clearing plates. We did the Saturday night buffet. Even though it is a seafood buffet, there is a lot of things to choose from. The fried chicken is very good. There is a good salad bar. They have corn casserole, frog legs, ham, fish, popcorn shrimp, ribs, mashed potatoes and gravy, plus a lot more along with soups and they even have several desserts to choose from. All of it was very good and worth the 45 minute drive. It's a good thing we don't live close because I ate way too much! Our server was a little argumentative after they failed to put the discount on a check and not very interested in bringing napkins. I had to go get them ourselves multiple times. (I guess that's the nature of crab legs). All in all, it was nice enough. But pretty pricey for the overall objective, even with the discount. Terrible. Used to love this place! Definitely gone down hill. Fast! All the food on the buffet was either empty or real old. The dinner rolls were literally like rocks. The fried chicken, which used to be my favorite, was dried out and cold. The salad bar was wilted sour lettuce! Don't go in for an early supper, you are likely to get the cold left overs from lunch. Cold chicken, broccoli, rolls, veggies, everything that is suppose to be hot, is cold. Putnam Inn is one of those off the beaten path places that you don't mind spending 45 minutes to drive too. This place has been here for a long time and for good reason. The food here is comfort food with a few surprises on the menu. Everything is made from scratch and is done really well. I would assume most of these recipes have been in the family for a long time. First of all, the décor is inviting but nothing fancy. The place is large and can seat a lot of people. I believe they even have a banquet room. The service is great and even though it is mostly high school age kids, they are trained well and they know what they are suppose to do at all times. The food is the star of the show. Chicken, fish, BBQ, shrimp and pork chops are some of the dishes that I have tried. All done perfectly and seasoned well. The sides are great. Mashed potatoes and homemade gravy, mac and cheese....... You won't be disappointed. I have never had anything that I was disappointed with. The surprises on the menu would be some Italian offerings and Seafood. Even if you are not in the mood for comfort food, they may still have something that you might be interested in. As far as price and value. It is the $7.00 to $15.00 range which is fair. You are paying about the same as most chain sit down restaurants, but you are getting great value for the money you spend. Unlike chain restaurants that charge the same price but give you inferior food and poor value for the money you spend. I hope Putnam Inn is around for a long time. I enjoy my trips to this great little hidden secret. If you are bored of chain restaurants and think for yourself and are not manipulated by millions of dollars in TV commercials to make yourself believe you have to eat average to below average overpriced food at some chain restaurant, I am one of you. The breakfast buffet is superb, offering a wide variety of delectable breakfast items, like pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausage, custom made omelets, and biscuits and gravy. All for a reasonable price too. Their dinner buffet is standard and offers good choices as well. However, I have come across some bland items and that is really the only bad thing I have to say about it here. The staff is pleasant, and the dessert bar is small but tasty. I will say that they have great cuts of roast beef on weekends! Their bar is small but vintage, and their beer selection is weak. Alcohol prices are reasonable too. We stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Arrived at 8 and had the place to ourselves. The buffet they put out for breakfast is pretty good. Everything seemed fresh, including the large variety of fruit. They offer a made-to-order omelette station that turned out a pretty good omelette. They had about six different ways to prepare potatoes. The scrambled eggs were not great (go for the fresh made omelette or fried eggs). The sausage patties were small and thin and slightly over cooked. The sausage links we're good, but "maple" flavored (which I don't care for). They also have mini smokey links which my wife said were better. There are several different bread options, from cinnamon rolls to danish/donuts and breakfast breads. Also pancakes, french toast sticks and waffles. All in all it was worth a visit. For $11.95 each it's a good value and the variety is nice. read more
