I don't want to dissuade anyone from going. I just want to encourage the Putney Diner to up their game. Positives: 1. The space is great. Exposed beams. What you'd hope for in an updated rustic old Vermont building. 2. The service has been excellent on both visits, with the caveat that breakfast is busy and the food took a long time to arrive. 3. Breakfast was solid. Not transcendent but solid eggs and toast and home fries and coffee and everybody seemed happy. Room for improvement 1. For Putney Vermont - get some decent vegan and vegetarian options. 2. The veggie burger was bean based, mushie old-school 70's style. Fell apart as soon as you picked it up. 3. The cheeseburger was good. It's just that for $18 you could show a little more attention to detail. A greenish slice of winter tomato. A single leaf of iceberg lettuce. 2 ringlets off an onion slice. And no pickle. 4. The fries that came with it had to be sent back to be cooked longer. And there was a big puddle of oil on the plate once I slid the par-cooked fries onto a side dish. The server was lovely about it and they came back fast and cooked through. But my guess is the oil wasn't hot enough hence the grease puddle. 5. The chicken orzo soup was meh. I don't try it. Brought it home for sick family member. And sorry but my personal pet peeve - the pre-calculated tip options were 20,22,25% and all calculated on top of the sales tax. Understand that it has gotten VERY expensive to go out for a burger for your average local. So putting a little more attention into it would be greatly appreciated. I was on a girls trip to VT and we stopped at the Putney for lunch. Really the food is 4 but the overall experience was a 3 . We pulled into the parking area and asked the workers we saw outside where the handicap entrance was and the kid looked at me like I was crazy. He said I don't know. I asked if he worked there and he said yes. ok is there a ramp? He asked another worker who told us to go to the other side of the building. One in our party is in a wheel chair and this place just squeaks by as being accessible. The ramp is old and feels very unsafe and when we got to the top there was no signage and there are no safety handles. It's scary. Once inside we had a wonderful experience. There is ample seating and it's rustic and cute. Our server was very nice Now the food: I got a Patty melt on rye with sweet potato fries (adding a side of maple syrup to dip those fries is a must) the burger was ok but was much too small for the bun. Friend 1 got a juicy mushroom burger with fries. It was very good. Fries are homemade and delicious. Friend 2 got a chicken wrap that tasted very fresh and was delicious. Side of sweet potato fries as well. Over all food is really good but not very wheelchair friendly read more

Besides being in a gorgeous town, The Putney Inn has superb food and service in a quaint historical building in the heart of Putney village, Vermont. We came here after attending a meeting in a town south of it and on the way to Woodstock VT. What better place to have breakfast. Our party devoured the pancakes, perfectly cooked eggs, tasty and crispy hash browns, all accompanied by superb coffee. Wait service was equally outstanding. so me and my girlfriend are on a road trip and we decided to stop by this place seemed pretty interesting when arriving the ambience was very nice. I started off my meal with two mimosas and a mocha Arigato or something like that and it was very good when the food came. That's where my concern started because I paid four dollars for some avocado and only got four digital slices of avocado, supermarket, avocados, and cost me three dollars. I understand you have to make some profit at least give me half of an avocado you just gave me four slice The food was OK. I had to put some salt on it for some taste and the waffle was pretty whack the waffle so you can't really do much. I definitely have better waffles. Me and my partner ended up paying about 140 so it was pretty pricey. My partner enjoyed their meal. They got a simple eggs, bacon, a bagel, but we both agree on the pancake that we shared from the waffle it's pretty disappointing overall I don't know if you wanna come come. the food also took a while to get to us compared to others. read more

This review is for lunch only since their breakfast is amazing even if everyone runs around totally stressed. Went there for lunch today with my family. I ordered fish and chips for myself and onion rings for the table. Just awfull.both were a half burned greasy mess. i had to scrape and cut out as much batter as possible and put the fish back in the sandwich.Onion rings were the same.definetly old and over used oil. Rest of the meals were not as bad but not worth the money. As far as service,i gave up on trying to get a cup of tea and no one came to check on how the food was or if we needed anything. Will go back for breakfast but never for lunch read more

First, this is not a handicap accessible restaurant. There is very limited street parking, but you can probably use the lot across the street. I thought there was parking behind the building, but it was all gravel and appeared to be a construction site. There are a few steps to get into the restaurant, and then 2 doors, which makes it difficult for someone using a walker, even with the assistance of their family. Definitely not wheelchair accessible. Inside the restaurant, we were seated promptly, the table was clean and roomy enough for 5 people. Our waitress was quick to take our order, and we were all satisfied with the food. I loved the little carafe of maple syrup, and the French fries were some of the best I've had in a while. They were very thin and crispy without being burnt. It was a little unsettling when we all got our food and my son's burger hadn't been served to him yet. I glanced around and our waitress was at another table taking an order. She hadn't mentioned it would be out shortly, and I began to wonder if he'd been forgotten. We couldn't catch her attention as she walked past us looking the other way. After another minute or 2, she finally brought his food. When it came time to pay, we were presented with the order slip, and a credit card reader. She placed it on the table and walked away. I had wanted to pay with cash, but it didn't appear to be an option. On the card reader, I opted for an emailed receipt. My receipt just says the total, nothing was itemized, so I have no idea if we were charged correctly. With its Twin Peaks vibe this is a good place for breakfast, great for dinner. The leek potato soup was a standout. We had the fish and chips, also very good. I ordered the chicken Marsala but my dish tasted more like a chicken piccata. Piccata has lemon, Marsala usually does not. Someone needs to check the ingredients and either correct the Marsala dish or change the menu to reflect what is being served. The food was okay but not overly enjoyable. We did come during a very busy time so it was crowded and cramped as well as loud. Good for the business but unfortunately hard to enjoy an expensive meal. Wanted to love it as I do diners in general, but too many things to complain about to go back. Granted it was 10:30 on a Sunday so we fully expected a wait. After 10 min, we noticed counter stools and since no one on line in front of us wanted them, we took a seat. It went downhill from there. Despite 3 people behind the counter moving slowly and doing very little, we had a hard time getting anyone's attention to get coffee and menus (not kept at counter???) It was at least 15 min before we got one of the not busy girls to find someone to take our order (they can only serve coffee???) Once we ordered, the food didn't take long to arrive. It was OK. Nothing special or noteworthy. Last comment- because we were at the counter, it got very cold when the door was held open by others waiting for a seat. A simple sign saying "please keep door closed" would have helped a lot. Instead, I had to turn and ask people 3 times to close the door. One time, it was an employee holding it open! There may not be a lot of choices in the area, but I can't abide by poor service and won't return. read more

Very welcoming for my first experience. We tried some passion fruit mimosas which were sooo good, and pictured were our order of classic eggs, bacon, hash brown and toast plate, and my friend got a peaches and cream french toast. Everything was well flavored, not too sweet and not too salty. It was a calm vibe which was perfect for the beautiful day out. We love this place! I recently had a birthday and decided to host a celebratory brunch at the Putney Diner. I phoned ahead to warn them we were a large group of 9. We were seated immediately, and as my guests trickled in were attended to. The place was very busy and I felt everything was expedited beautifully. One of my guests became prickly when her latte was either forgotten or the coffee bar became "weeded," and I was embarrassed by her surliness. Kudos to the waitstaff and food runners who let it roll off and brought the missing drinks asap. As a former server, I know all too well how it feels when a guest is unhappy, so big thanks to everyone. And my boyfriend told me he tipped extra. read more

Whoa! I was very surprised when I went to your former kitchen saw the sign then looked across the street and there is the Putney Diner! Huge move across the street from the tiny location to a much larger and beautiful building. The inside is spacious and immaculate. Impressive! OK. Now for the food. I ordered a veggie type omelette like I have done when I visited the former loc, with homefries and coffee. My omelette looked like a large ravioli square puffed up in the center with an empty head and tail of lightly fried egg. Also, the plate that the omelette was on was quite smaller than the plates at the former; about the size of a salad plate. It was very tasty for what there was of it. Service was friendly and efficient as always. I do understand increased overhead must be costly. Please, do not take this out on your customers. Give me (us) the same quality and quantity as we have been experiencing before the move. If you need to increase the price, let it happen but keep the size and expectation the same. I absolutely will be back. Maybe next time I will have one of those handsome looking muffins. Or maybe I will give that omelette another try. Let's see what happens. read more

Out of this world hole in the wall diner in Putney!! The food was phenomenal. We had the green mountain special (two eggs, two pancakes, meat and home fries) and a veggie omelette. The pancakes came with real maple syrup, portioned out from a steaming cauldron of it, and was absolutely delicious. Also got some cranberry pecan toast that was magic!! Sweet staff was working their butts off, so impressed with the ladies running this place. Great road trip find, will be back!! read more

One of the best diners I've ever been to in Vermont. The food is GREAT! Service is good! Coffee and hot chocolate is served in giant mugs! Specials are available on the wall each week. The pancakes are to die for.. So delicious! You will always see a line out the door on the weekends. You can't make a reservation. It's first come, first serve. So get there early or go late morning. Parking can be tricky if the side of the road in front of the diner is full..just take your time driving around and finding a spot. I wouldn't go here with a large group but 4-5 people is ok! Large wooden booths and individual seating is available. I definitely recommend going here if you're hungry and in the area. read more

The place is adorable. Farm country chic. I was surprised by how many tables this place has without feeling cramped. One booth could probably even seat up to six. The service is friendly with a smile. I was expecting a longer wait for food but it came pretty darn quick. The food was good. My husband said it was the best western omelette he's ever had. My son also seemed to enjoy his veggie omelette. He cleaned his plate. My green mountain breakfast was good, nothing exceptional but it was exactly what I was craving. I wish I had been able to try the maple latte. The specialty coffee drinks that the other guest ordered looked amazing. If you're staying in Putney you definitely need to try this place for breakfast! My eggs over easy were fresh and thick. The bacon was crispy and delicious. The hash browns were well-seasoned and tasty. Even the toast was fresh. I literally cleaned my dish! The bottomless coffee (and I'm not a big coffee drinker) with some milk was delicious! I have no idea what it is about the coffee but I loved it. If I am ever in the area again I will definitely be stopping by here again. The place is small but sweet. I was there on a light day and service was fast and waitress attentive. She was not the warmest person, but she was the only one working in front and I have no idea how long or how much she has been doing helping in back and front, and took that into account. There's also a windowsill full of coloring books and small activities for children (or adults too why not!). I found an old quiz booklet I used to love as a child. Brought good memories. Let me start off by saying this is the first review I have ever written, but I thought it was important enough . The food was excellent ,my wife and I went for breakfast. We were seated quickly and asked if we wanted a beverage. We ordered coffee and said we were ready to order our meal. The person said he would send someone over to take our order. No one came so I asked him again if he would send someone over. It took quite a while for someone to come and when she did she was unfriendly to us. The food came out and like I said it was excellent. No one came to check on how we were doing and if everything was ok. We finished our meal. Someone came by and cleared off the table as we were still waiting for our check. With our coats on and about 15 minutes later we tried to get her attention but she didn't even acknowledge us. I finally decided to get up and go find her to get our check. She was also very rude to me at that time, I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had this problem and I know you guys are busy but a smile goes a long way! This is the first time I've been in your new location and we went because I have heard great reviews from people. I've been in your old location several times. We showed up at around 11:30 on a Wednesday. The place was busy but there were open tables. Our first time visit. The 3 of us ordered omelets, 2 with home fries and one with hash browns. I got a latte which was excellent. 2 of us ordered the omelet that contained corned beef hash, and we were asked if we wanted the home-made hash for an extra $1 or the "standard". I didn't want to ask what the "standard" was, and we both opted for the home-made. It all seemed strange. Just charge the dollar more on the menu and just have home-made, but I digress. It took pretty darned close to a half an hour to get our food, and we never saw our waitress in that time. Overall the service was just that...very basic and minimal. Nothing bad about it, just a bit cold and slow. The food came as ordered. The hash was so well done as to have hard bits in it, almost burnt, and honestly had no taste, maybe because it was so dry and overdone. The same for the home fries. We all like our home fries crisp, but maybe not necessarily a lot of blackened pieces indicating they both sat on the grill too long, neglected, without it being stirred. I didn't ask the 3rd eater about her hash browns, except to say, she took one taste, and left the rest. Maybe she just wasn't hungry. When our waitress came by after our meals were consumed, and we were winding up, I asked for a bit more water. She said ok and then plunked down and electronic pay pad for me to put my cc info in and leave the tip. She never sort of said "thanks, here's the bill" so that was just a bit odd. But no worries. We had not seen her earlier in case we wanted coffee or anything or no one came by to ask how our meals were once we dug in. Again, not bad service, just not good service. She did come back wiht the water, but after we had finished, I had paid, and we were getting up to leave. Seems obvious that when we visited, the kitchen was perhaps short staffed, what with the long wait and neglected food that was over done. As far as the service, I dunno. The place was steady but not slammed, but maybe they were short a waitstaff too. The reviews here are generally excellent, so I'll likely come back again to try it. Maybe I just hit it on a bad day, and working in a diner isn't the easiest either. I like the feel of the place inside, so I would like to like it. Maybe next time. read more
