Tonight on the way home from @PeddlersVillage , the @OldPubClub found another establishment, in #WhitehouseStation , that has been around longer than us. This building was built in 1845 and opened for business in 1846 as the Union Hotel when the Central Railroad of New Jersey first came to Readington. After the hotel closed, the building became a the home to several restaurants throughout the years. The location was called Flamingo's when the television show "Kitchen Nightmares" came in and rebranded the place and named it The Junction. Chef Gordon Ramsey helped revamp the restaurant. By calling it The Rail, they are honoring the railroad theme, being in this historic building, so close to the tracks. My family and I have been coming to The Rail before it was called the rail, but our last visit inspired me to finally share a review about why this place is so awesome. Even though my parents are locals, I had flown in late for the holiday and we were starving coming from the airport and looking forward to some good food and good atmosphere. It was a slow Sunday and we happened to get there right after the kitchen had closed. We were about to leave when they called us back and said they would keep the kitchen open to get us food. Though we were probably the only people there, Shawna and Jen took amazing care of us and made sure we had a good meal. This above and beyond service is one of the many reasons this restaurant is the best in the area. So why do we love The Rail so much? For anyone who hasn't been and looking for a great experience, this place has it all: live music and the best cover bands in NJ? Check. A solid menu with high quality food? Check. (Family disagreement on the best dish- I love the chicken zarro but the Rail burger is a fav). Genuine hospitality and staff who take care of you? Check. I can't say enough good things about this place. We've been here at least a half dozen times. After seeing they were listed as one of the best places to get corned beef in New Jersey ( https://nj1015.com/st-patricks-day-best-corned-beef-new-jersey/ ), I had to try it. We chose to go early (5:30pm) on a Friday night. The platters were out fairly quickly. The portion of corned beef was a good size. It came with 1/4 heads of cabbage, carrots, red skin potatoes, and Irish soda bread. Guinness draft pints were also on special. We will definitely be back every year for St. Patrick's Day. read more

We went to The Rail to celebrate the 90th birthday of my mother-in-law. Ten of us were given a table for our 1:30pm reservation. The server was very friendly and professional. We ordered different meals and everyone was beyond pleased. There are gluten free options available for each dish, even the French Onion Soup! We were also able to swap: french fries for broccoli, cheddar cheese for a burger, etc. You are also able to bring your own birthday cake, which meant so much to my mother-in-law, who loves ice cream cake. We weren't rushed and truly enjoyed a relaxed time. I bought gift cards on my way out so that my kids and their spouses can return and try something different. read more

This was a truly delightful experience; it's a locals bar that was super-welcoming to an obvious out-of-towner. The young woman at the bar and Carlo the server did fine work. I enjoyed the Rail Burger. The crispy bacon is so impressive one holds out the unlikely hope that The Rail will debut a breakfast menu. The fries are a strong point too. In a bitter irony for non-car owners, The Rail is steps away from the White House NJ Transit station, which has no service on weekends. Updating to downgrade my review... unfortunately. I have loved the Rail for a number of years after trying them out for being named the best burger in Hunterdon County. And yes, it is good. I have enjoyed it many times before being told by doctors that I can no longer have gluten. I recently ordered takeout asking for a gluten free bun for my burger, which you also pay extra for. Unfortunately when I got home I found it to be NOT a gluten free bun. I do not eat this way because its cool, or a fad, I do it for my health and when I have gluten or cross contaminated items, I get sick. We called the restaurant to confirm, the order and receipt were correct but this was a mistake on the part of the kitchen, strike 1. They did not offer a credit or any accommodation whatsoever, strike 2. When I order something (and pay extra for it to be prepared that way), I expect it to be cooked and prepared to those specifications. ESPECIALLY when it comes to allergies and gluten sensitivity. This is something that has to be taken very seriously. I removed the bun and ate the burger hoping for the best and got sick the following day from what I can only guess was the cross contamination. Yes, that's how sensitive some people are to this. Sorry Rail, you have got to get orders right. And when you don't, you need to make an attempt to make it up to the customer. read more

This is a new favorite for me! Highly Recommended by Ladies of Hunterdon County Facebook page, I booked a lunch with my friend on a summer Tuesday. We sat for 4 hours and chatted while we tried different things on the menu including coffee and dessert. The employees were incredibly lovely and fun to chat with. No complaints other than the Bar playing Fox "News" all afternoon. But I guess it's Hunterdon County. We were glad for the time together, and feeling like we weren't pressured to leave. I've been coming here for a long time to see bands. They get great musicians and bands here at the rail. This time I came here to meet up with friends who happen to live 2 1/2 hours away and were in the area and going to be having dinner with 2 other couples. I decided to meet up with my friend and have a drink and catch up for alittle while before I needed to be somewhere else later that evening. It's been 2 years since I saw her. Everything started out good. The waitress was very nice she took our order and it came out fairly quickly. I stayed 1 hour, then it was time to go. We went downstairs to the entrance and met up with our waitress who gave us the bill. My waitress told us she gave us a separate check which originally I thought was great. I had one drink, my BF had two drinks and fried calamari, and my friend had a martini and a tomato, basil, mozzarella salad. When we got the bill it came to $148. We immediately knew this was a big mistake and I brought it to our waitresses attention. I don't know if she was new or not, but what transpired next was just a nightmare. We tried to explain that the bill was wrong. She seemed overwhelmed and called the manager over. At first I didn't think it would be a problem, but after waiting 45 minutes I realized that neither one of them knew how to fix the bill. First off on the menu that they gave us fried calamari was listed as $10. We were charged $14. The manager said oh that's the wrong price on the menu but that's what it said so we had him adjust it. Then they tried to say we had more drinks which we did not. As a matter fact I didn't even finish my drink because It got spilled on me. My friend she ordered a martini. She never orders premium alcohol because she doesn't like grey goose. She got charged $15 for the small martini and when she questioned it they said they put three premium alcohols in it. They never mentioned anything about premium alcohol and prices, to her It was really strange. This is something she orders out frequently and has never had this problem or been charged $15. I just had a Tito's and club and they charged me $11. I also thought it was really strange that my boyfriend was charged $.50 for marinara sauce and $.50 for the spicy tomato sauce that supposed to come with the fried calamari. Anytime I've ever ordered fried calamari and we order it frequently the marinara sauce comes with it and you never get charged extra. It was taking so long to fix the bill that my girlfriend took a paper bag and wrote down everything we ordered and the prices. All they had to do was go in ring that up have us pay so we can get out of there and then go into the main bill which had our friends drinks and food on it and readjust it later on. No, that didn't happen and we were there for 45 minutes watching them trying to figure out how to fix our bill. Finally, after 45 minutes the bill was fixed and it came to $45 . that's a very big difference than $148. I don't know if it's because the staff is new, or the business is having a hard time but I feel that they really need to be more forthcoming with their prices or extra charges. If your menu is wrong fix it. Don't just charge a different price without letting the patrons know first. If something is an extra charge then tell the person who is ordering it. We're not mind readers. How many people were either charged wrong or billed extra without their knowledge? I do like this place the staff is always nice, but they need to do a better job. A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I came in to kill some time. There looked like only 2 women working and running around. We were acknowledged with a "hi. I'll be right with you, but we looked to our right and asked if it was ok to just go to the bar. So we sat at the bar and the woman that we found out was named Karen came behind the bar from the bar tables , smiled and blurted out, " hi. I'm Karen but I'm not a Karen" are you having lunch with me today? We ordered a soup that Karen recommended. Cream of mushroom. Excellent! We then ordered burgers. I got the horseradish that Karen said was her favorite, but she forgot to order sweet potato fries for me. My husband got the Rail? Anyway, the mistake was fixed very quickly and somehow it ended up to be a joke! The people at the bar were making fun of her ! She was laughing! I've a,ways enjoyed a lunch out with friends at The Rail! Today, I ordered a BLT ON RYE (3 slices of bacon) - not listed on the menu but the waitress assured me it was no problem. I was shocked to get a bill for $19!! Sandwiches on their menu are in the $14-$16 range -a Philly Cheesesteak with peppers, onions mushrooms and provolone is $20! Not sure how in the world you can justify the price I was charged but I will be enjoying lunch out with friends at another restaurant in the future! read more

Good food, good service, good portions. I had dinner here for the first time yesterday, and it won't be the last. The lobster bisque was creamy and flavorful, with discernible small bits of lobster. For my entree I had the "Chicken Zarro", which are two chicken cutlets topped with prosciutto, mozzarella, mushrooms, and ​Marsala sauce, served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. It was a generous portion that had just the right balance of flavors and was not overly salty, which dishes with Marsala and prosciutto can sometimes be. The entree included a side salad with a nice mix of greens (not the usual filler iceberg or romaine lettuce), with carrot and ripe juicy grape tomatoes, along with their house balsamic dressing which was tangy without being bitter or overpowering. My only slight disappointment was the very limited beer menu. This turned out to be a silver lining because I was introduced to the draft cider I decided to have instead, which was from Melick's Town Farm in nearby Oldwick; it was crisp and mostly dry but quite drinkable and refreshing. I arrived at just about 5pm on a Friday and was seated immediately. The service from Isabelle and the rest of the staff was quick, friendly, and attentive. In fact, my entree came out before I was done with my salad, but that was fine because I let it sit for a few minutes to cool off while I finished the greens. This was an accidental find for me: I was passing thru Whitehouse Station on my way to Peddler's Village outside New Hope, PA, where I was intending to have dinner, when I passed by the Rail. It looked like an interesting place, so I pulled over just down the road, checked out the online reviews, and doubled-back to have dinner, being very hungry and wanting to avoid the holiday shopping crowds at the Peddler's Village restaurants. The power went out at our house around dinnertime. We sat in the dark for awhile and then said "Why don't we go to The Rail"? So off we go .... Sat at the bar had a tasty Flemington Fog IPA from Lone Eagle Brewery and an order of Onion Rings. BF had a Manhattan and French Onion Soup. The order of onion rings was generous with a Guinness glaze. BF really enjoyed the French Onion Soup which was loaded with melty cheese. We met with Brian several times and planned our son and his fiance's wedding rehersal dinner at the Rail. We reserved the second floor which accommodated all of their guests (45). The room was arranged as we all planned, so no surprises there. We chose a family style dinner and what a great choice! Appetizer towers (these are a must, Sooo good) , wine and beer. Mixed veges, mashed potatoes, pasta primevera, Chicken marsala, French rib pork chops, all served hot and on time. What a spread! Our servers never missed a beat, taking care of everyone with a smile! They worked hard to be sure we were happy. And the guests were delighted and surprised that they received take away boxes to take leftovers home. You shouuld have seen the smiles on our guests faces! Quick thinking on the staff at the Rail for that move, and we still had leftovers to take home to our freezer. All this and a great desert table that Brian allowed us to set up and that we sourced seperately from Sweet Melissa's, a local patisserie . He worked with us to be sure we had what we needed. Our night started off when I ordered the lamb chop special at a burger place. Mistake number one. Calling the chops measly would be an understatement. Were they terrible? No. Still, they were pathetically small. In my opinion an oversized heap of mashed potatoes doesn't make up for the fact that the main part of the entree was incredibly undersized. One of my friends ordered a tuna dish over pasta, and instead got a completely different tuna appetizer that came out with our meals. When told of this, our waitress quickly apologized and proceeded to walk away. Another had water poured into his glass of sprite. When his meal came out, the bread of his meal was overcooked and somewhat burnt, and the fries tasted like the oil they were cooked in was incredibly old. At one point, I asked for a water refill. You can imagine my confusion when I heard "here's the coke you asked for". Yes, you read that right. The simplest request one could possibly make in any restaurant proved to be too much for the staff at the Rail. Three notable mishaps in one night is rarely a coincidence, so if you go don't expect much from the service. Nevertheless, the food didn't take overly long to get there, and the pretzel appetizer was impressive. I know I ordered the wrong thing, but in a table of four people, if only one person gives the night anything over a 2/5 for both the service and the meal, this place has some serious need for improvement. read more

Every time I'm in town I come here with my family. They often have live music playing, but we came too early this past time to hear it unfortunately. They have tons of live events (trivia, holiday specials, DJs, fundraisers, etc.) during the week and weekends. I LOVED my food - I ordered the harbor clams over pasta - but it had butter on it rather than olive oil which I wish I'd knew ahead of time (it was kind of heavy). We also ordered spinach & artichoke dip as an appetizer and asked for a side of marinara sauce with it, but instead of hot marinara we got cold salsa. Make sure they know what you're asking for - I think that was the problem! Besides that, the service was great. Servers are very friendly and quick with bringing the food out. Everyone at the table loved what they ordered. Their dinner rolls have a great flavor. I had to post a pic of my entree since it looked so good. We like the Rail. It is usually friendly and good food. They fell short on dessert. I ordered the "Fried Brownie Bite" with strawberry ice cream to go, we are less than 5 minutes away. When I got home the brownie was not fried (not even warm), it was very small, was a torn piece and horrible tasting. Owner or Chef should think about a different vendor. I received vanilla instead of strawberry ice cream. It was not worth the $12! Will never order again. My husband ordered the cheesecake which was also quite small. read more

We visit the Rail about once per week, and have since we moved to Whitehouse Station. Their burgers are delicious and always cooked as we order them. The fires are always fresh and and hot and their coleslaw is pretty good. The service is generally good and we like the local pub feel of the place. They have a good crowd of regulars. They also have entertainment on weekend nights. We really enjoy having a friendly local bar restaurant so close to home. read more
