The garden like setting with the twinkling lights and all the happy workers made us feel very happy to be there and that we chose the right place for our special occasion we each got the three-course meal which was plenty. My husband and I came for an anniversary dinner with a Groupon deal we got. We bought a Groupon for a 5 course meal plus a bottle of wine. It was such a great deal we couldn't pass up the chance to try this place. After looking at the reviews, I was so excited to go and see for myself. Great choice on the hubby's part. The ambience was amazing and the staff was so friendly. All of the tables are outdoor patio seating with lush green surroundings and a koi pond/ stream. We had Igor for our waiter and he was extremely helpful as this was our first time at the ranch house. He's also the bartender and the manager there too. He told us all about the events they have during the month. For example, they have tango nights every 3rd Sunday of the month. Now for the meals: Started off with a mini honey oat loaf with a onion and chive butter. Yummy!!! Hubby's meal - Roasted bone marrow-appetizer - roasted carrot salad - Moroccan lentil soup - braised lamb shank - cheesecake for dessert My meal- grilled shrimp-appetizer - roasted carrot salad - veggie purée soup - grilled filet mignon - flourless chocolate cake Although, I didn't get the chance to try my favorite creme brûlée, all the food was amazing and the service was beyond my expectations! Even in a downpour, a lovely space - and I wanted to be v into it - but the menu's a bit outdated and there was definitively a non-RN hair in my risotto, so I'm not completely enthralled. Emailed them a week in advance, got a reservation without issue. The crowd our weekend night was slightly geriatric, but it's also a prix-fixe in Ojai on a random weekend, so I wouldn't expect much different. You can do either three or five courses - we opted for three as our tums weren't that ready for a feast. I started with the artichoke toast (radish, egg), which was adequate but nothing mind blowing - in need of salt and intrigue - J went for the elk ragu, which he thoroughly enjoyed until he inhaled a bay leaf and I actually almost had to Heimlich him in heels. Moved onto a spinach/goat cheese salad, a bit of a waste as it wasn't anything that was different from Trader Joe's finest - I could have gone for the salsify "pasta" (carrot pesto, pumpkin sauce), crab cakes, or said eff it to 17+ years w/o meat and hit the beef poutine or house made pate, but I wasn't up for the possible fall out. Other tables seemed to love them. For mains I did a salmon, well cooked, on a bed of risotto, which was flavorless but done properly, minus the aforementioned hair. Plate needed some veggies. I feel like J did the filet mignon. While most of the dishes are old school (duck cassoulet, lamb shank), they do have a decent number of veg options and the GF crowd won't starve either. Dessert was flourless chocolate cake, adequate but felt a touch Sara Lee. Caramel sauce truly weak. Service is friendly and approachable. The "dining room" is all outdoors, covered, so even in the rain it was pleasant, heat-lamp heavy experience. Solid wine list, not shabby cocktails. Three courses for $50, five for $65, which given the amnt of food you receive, is a steal. I don't regret the experience, but it wasn't as yum as I expected given the strong reviews. Come for the ambiance. The food and service were both pretty good, but the spectacular property is what would keep me coming back for more. Had a lovely group dinner at The Ranch House while staying in Ojai and while I'm no local expert, this place feels like one of the more upscale options in town. Upon arrival we were promptly whisked through their pretty inside bar area to an outdoor table surrounded by bamboo trees and little ponds. You even get to walk over a bridge! Talk about magical. The Ranch House's menu is prix fixe with two options: either three courses for $50 or five courses for $60. You can mix and match your selection of soup, salad, app, entree, and dessert, getting all five with the latter option. I went with the three course and ordered the spinach goat cheese salad, pate, and filet mignon. Honestly a pretty good deal for $50, although none of my dishes were particularly noteworthy. Our servers were sweet and helpful, although I'll note that one seemed to know nothing about the menu (or maybe food in general, as he wasn't familiar with ciabatta bread). Pro tip: if you're planning on eating outside and it's not summertime, definitely dress warmly! They do have little propane heaters and blankets, but the heaters aren't super warm. All in all this place is gorgeous and I'd come back to split a bottle of red for date night, but might skip the food menu altogether. read more

We were so disappointed by our experience at The Ranch House. While the atmosphere is enchanting, it's really the only redeeming quality of this restaurant. The service and quality of food, along with the prices that they charge are very disappointing. The staff was not able to answer majority of our questions about the menu and options and most of our requests went unanswered/were forgotten. For example: -When the bread, which was stale, was delivered with an herb butter, we asked what flavors were infused to the butter. We were told "milk?" -My husband ordered his filet as chef's choice and it came out Medium Well, which the server told us is how the chef suggests, which we found difficult to believe. -When we asked for an additional wine glass for the wine we brought, the staff member (who may have been a busser) told us he was only 17 and couldn't bring us one. -The lobster bisque was nearly inedible due to it being extremely salty -The chocolate "lava cake" appeared to be a store bought brownie that was heated up We were very much looking forward to a special night out at the Ranch House and unfortunately will not be back, nor would we ever recommend to a friend. I have frequented this place sporadically over the last 30 years. When I first started coming, they were a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner with an amazing wine list and sometimes two sommeliers on staff at once. Today, they have a wine list that offers maybe two dozen ho-hum wines that will not impress any refined palate and is certainly not up to the level of the food. The food was tasty and the servers were quite attentive. The ambience is still quite nice making it a great date spot if wine is not your thing. I miss the Ranch House of yesteryear. Times change, owners change and now we have the pandemic. I hope they can up their game when the pandemic passes because there are few places that offer this charm. However, we probably won't be returning until the wine list improves. Note: Not all tables have good heaters. You may want to bring a small lap blanket as it can get cool on some nights. read more

Such a beautiful place! The Ranch House is extremely romantic and elegant. Dining tables are set amongst bamboo trees, wooden bridges, soothing streams and meditating fountains. This is where you bring your dates, soul mates, and brides. If you come here during a cold night, the heaters are lit along with candles. The endless wine list and exquisite menu are just a pleasure to explore. I can't tell you how much I appreciated the lamb rack I enjoyed. After looking at the overall rating I was super excited to try all the food. I went with two other people so we all tried to order different items to really taste everything. Starting with the appetizers: filet was over cooked, the lamb flatbread was bland, and if you're a crab cake lover, don't do it. Had to send back one of the salads because it was old. What sets a good restaurant from a great restaurant is the dining experience. Matt set our experience apart from others that we have had. Very professional, very polite, and very capable. I tend to try to be funny (according to my wife), and Matt did an awesome job of adapting to that. My wife and I went to a steakhouse in Santa Monica to celebrate the holidays and were not impressed. Expensive, food not great, service mediocre at best. The Ranch house superseded all of our expectations, and the service contributed the most to this. It was very tender and juicy, which is opposite to every other experience I've had with that cut of beef. The bean stew with beef was spicy but hearty. The duck confit dish provided only the duck leg, which kind of tasted like chicken honestly. There was this one interesting appetizer, though, called Beef Bone Marrow with onions and crostini. I cannot rate The Ranch House in Ojai high enough! I will simply say that both my wife and I found our first trip to this historic venue to be the best dining experience weve ever had, anywhere in the country, at any time. Fab-uuuuu-lous!! But when you step through the front door you realize you've entered into a secret tantric garden of respite and sustenance. Of friendship and fare. As soon as we came in we could tell they were extremely busy. Normally this place would only seat reservations, but Russ, the gentle giant former New Yorker, who was running the house tonight eagerly welcomed us to a table as though we were old friends. The serene environs include a full bamboo forest with a winding path that crosses bridges and streams, with a feng shui sense of decor. Succulents and flowers everywhere. Beautiful. It truly feels as though you're dining somewhere in the eastern part of the world and not the middle of the Ojai Valley. The food?? Spectaculary created, plated, delectable and savory. I had the 5 course meal which to my choosing included an appetizer of crab cakes with a sriracha aoli, a perfectly tempered chicken tortilla soup, a very fresh multi leafed salad that had burrata cheese with a perfect balance of acidic citrus. Delicious. My wife and I usually get different entrees but this time we both went for the filet mignon, and thank God we did!! Complete mouth orgasm with every bite, served with a luscious bearnaise that simply complimented this excellent cut of meat. We finished with a New York cheescake that wad divine. These people that own and operate The Ranch House most definitely know how to treat thier customers to a fine dining gourmet experience from beginning to end. Cold bread, tasteless appetizer, inedible salad (it almost seems impossible to make a bad salad but there was something wrong withe the lettuce) and overcooked main. I should have spoken up to the staff but we kept thinking the next item had to be better because of the reviews. 75 percent of meal was uneaten and our waitress waited until the end to ask how everything was (don't the barely eaten dishes tell you?) The destination is a little remote, but worth the drive to Ojai, which is beautiful route through Casitas and the back country. Upon arriving, the parking lot was already half full, and many dinners had some nice secluded tables among the bamboo forest, which has a sort of south Pacific feel. The Living Social Deal was a 5-course meal of anything on the menu for each category of appetizer, soup and salad, entree, and dessert, plus a bottle of wine. This time I took photos, and was glad we chose different dishes, just to see what the others tasted like. The wife enjoyed her lamb, and I was satisfied with my fish. However, the dessert was the deal sealer, and was both large and decadent. The evening is so romantic with the lighting and and small dining areas, which sets a romantic feel Steve McQueen had spoken of in his early reviews of this restaurant. It truly doesn't get any better than this! I started getting recommendations from friends on places to have my wedding reception in Ojai. After looking online at the Ranch House, I knew I wanted to go check it out. The pictures don't even do it justice- it is beyond magical here!! We decided early on that this would be the spot and Russ invited us to come by for a tour. Russ was so welcoming and fun to be around and instantly made us feel like this was the right choice for us. Leading up to the reception, we worked with both him and Angie on the details and pricing. They were very accommodating and we were able to create a custom package that worked really well for us! When Russ heard there was a slight chance of rain, he suggested we switch the location to under the patio area where there were heaters and plenty of space. Our wedding party headed to the Ranch House at 4pm and were able to have an incredible cocktail and hors d'oeuvres hour. Y'all... the appetizers were to die for! It was so beautiful inside that area and we had the place all to ourselves. Beautiful lighting, decor, and music playing in the background. We were able to do our first dance inside and it was beyond special for us. My day of coordinator went above and beyond and helped with design/decor for the patio area. IT WAS SO GORGEOUS. I truly couldn't believe it! Both my coordinator and The Ranch House had beautiful table linens, florals, candles, and decor that magnified the already beautiful surroundings. Now let me tell you... I'm a huge food lover and I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to dinner. WOW.... That's all I can say!!! Every single one of us felt like we had the best meal of our lives. I had the filet and also got to try the salmon and they both were incredible!!! Seriously, I'm so particular about my food and it was to die for! The soup, salad, and dessert were all amazing as well. I was so blown away by the amount of effort and care that the Ranch House provided for us. They truly made our day so special and I'd highly recommend coming here whether it's for a special night out or to have your wedding + reception. I would do it all over again in a heart beat! The quality of food fluctuates - from OK to very good. The setting is 5 stars. However, the wine selection ruins it all. It starts at over $70 per bottle (with tax&tip) and, at least the bottle we got, was of so low quality I can't think of anything comparable I drank in the recent past. Wine was not corked nor otherwise spoiled, but just so flat, acid and characterless. It's like they bought it for $4 a bottle and marked it up nearly 20 times. Will not return. read more

This time the place felt run down, the food was really bad (appetizer tasted of freezer burn, main course not good,) and certainly not worth the required $75 3-course fixed price. My parents had their anniversary at The Ranch House around 20 years ago and since then it has not dimmed or changed from its original beauty! The Ranch House is somewhat of a local legend for the natural beauty of the gardens, romantic atmosphere and great food. Which is why I was so honored to have had my wedding ceremony and reception there. The Ranch House staff and especially the manager Russ were beyond amazing for our wedding! Accommodating and easy to work with Angie and Russ went with every change with such grace. The rose garden and grounds of the ranch house made for easy decorations. We brought table decor and the rest was just natural beauty but really made the wedding look like a million bucks! Sure, with Ownership changes, Management changes AND Chef changes too close together - certainly the quality of this or any restaurant will go downhill quickly. When an Owner is in a place for so many years, they get old and tired, start passing decisions onto others who inherit things (not by choice), because it's their time to retire. We were quite hesitant, as a vacation dinner away from home should be special and spectacular, and their current reviews scared us off. On the Monday they are closed we nonetheless, drove by to peek at the property. We were excitedly greeted by the new General Manager Russ. He has that friendliness that makes you want to keep his company. His warm and inviting personality took us inside for a tour. After showing us the grounds and the new construction (for a lounge, and other neat features for dining like an outdoor Chef's Table), we cornered him, gently about their terrible reviews. Never get deterred by a bad review or two; but when there is a common theme in the reviews that say it's bad - just run! Clearly a restaurant has issues. He was quite aware of the reputation and vowed that they are turning this place around. The new Owner is quite experienced, and so is Russ, the General Manager. He encouraged us to make a reservation for dinner the next day and assured us of our satisfaction. Oh and by the way, NEW CHEF. I had a chance to rap with Chef Sean. Watch out for him - he brings in with him a secret weapon. That is, his cooking background should really shake things up here. Yes I agree some menu items are dated - get them off the menu please! But give them a chance for a slow transition as they are growing their products and others come from local farms. See the photo of the "Stuffed Avocado". Oh my, I seriously enjoyed this. I would normally order a protein dish - I was encouraged to try this. I was quite satiated. Quite. We visited the first week of August 2014 - and they are still getting used to the "new neighborhood". If they continue on the same path of improvement that I see them on, this place will once again be "the" place to dine. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous. See the many photos we took. There are cobblestone paths that lead you all around. There are many different private and open dining areas. Foliage and vegetation abound. We sat at table 18, next to the koi pond and friendship bridge. That was neat. This is an updated review based on our visit May 8, 2016. My past review stated we were disappointed with this place because, while under new ownership, they changed their Mother's Day menu from ordering off the menu to a buffet style brunch. When I called this year, I was happy to hear they went back to having a menu for Mother's Day. Let me start out by saying this review has two sides. The food was outstanding. Hats off to the cooks, great job! If I were to base this review off the food, I would come back without hesitation. The service on the other hand was horrible. Had to ask for water and ice tea refills. No ice was given with the refills so had to ask for that too. The menu stated children were half price. The menu was a preset menu with options of a three course meal ($45) or five course meal ($57). I made the sad mistake of assuming the waitress would consider a ten-year-old girl a child. Obviously I was wrong in my assumption and she was charged the full price. When we received our bill back after payment, I had another customers credit card and half of his receipts. I tried to flag down an employee but could not find one. I looked around and saw a couple leaving. I asked him if his name was the name on my credit card and luckily it was. He had my credit card in his wallet and half of my lunch receipts. Luckily we were able to straighten out this mess. We leave our table and walk to the parking lot. Once in the parking lot, my wife noticed we left our daughter's to-go bag at the table along with her $500 reading glasses. I walk back to the table, maybe two minutes had elapsed, an the busboy was busing the table. I didn't see my daughters boxed food or my wife's glasses. I asked the busboy if he found the food and glasses and his answer was, "Naw, I just got here." and he continued to bus the table. I told the busboy that I would finish busing the table if he could check on my missing items. After a few minutes he came back and told me that they threw our food away because they thought we had left. He also stated he didn't know anything about the glasses and went back to busing the table. I began to to check the area where we sat, the garden and every other place I could look for the glasses. Mind you this was without any help from the staff. I spoke to the manager and he asked around, checked the kitchen and said he would take my name and phone number. I asked him how could have the glasses disappeared on less then two minutes. Of course he had no answer. He did allow me to look in the trash and used napkin bin for the glasses but appeared a little perturbed allowing that. To make matters worse, while I was looking or the glasses on the patio area several minutes after looking in the napkin bin, the manger told the bartender in a sarcastic tone, "He's still looking for those glasses!" I did everything I could not to tell that manager what I was thinking at that time. Needless to say, we didn't find the glasses. I called to complain the next day and was told the owner of the restaurant would be notified of the incident. Well, I have yet to hear from anyone. I am so extremely disappointed with the Ranch House. I so wanted this to be a great experience and have a great reason to keep returning for years to come. Obviously that won't be happening. From the poor service, the "mysterious" disappearance of the glasses within two minutes of leaving the table and blundering of my credit cards. The totality of this experience has put a bad taste in my mouth and will NEVER be returning to this poorly run establishment again!! read more

This is .3 miles from our air bnb and we walked over for dinner last night. We were immediately enchanted by the lush plants, private bamboo, and garden setting of the restaurant. The maitre d was friendly and welcoming. He said thank you for coming before we even sat down. Igor was our server and did a great job. We both got extra dirty ketel one martinis, the 3 course pre fixe dinner, and had complimentary samples of the house made Limoncello courtesy of the new owner's wife. To start my husband got the pork belly which he really enjoyed, followed by the pork entree, and the dessert trio. I got the scallop in a shell with curry flavors over mashed potatoes, the mint and avocado soup (I forgot what else was in it but I didn't care for it), followed by the cedar plank infused salmon with green beans and nuts. Igor thoughtfully asked if I wanted anything else but I was actually full. I don't know how people do 5 or 7 or 9 course tastings. The ambiance was lovely, romantic, and the prices are very reasonable. We will be back next time we are in Ojai. The restaurant has over 7 decades of history and is the original 'farm to table' real deal. read more

My boyfriend made a reservation, and we were seated by the koi pond and little bridge. I thought it was just a perfect spot. Since the sun already the set, everything was beautiful lit. Forman Napa Valley Chardonnay 2007 (5 stars) - This is a great food wine, which was recommended by the sommelier the last time. It was so memorable that we had to ordered it this time around. It complemented the crab cakes and scallops perfectly. Mixed Green Salad (4 stars) - The salad was tossed in the perfect amount of the fig balsamic vinaigrette, which added a little sweetness. It complemented with the saltiness of the gorgonzola and prosciutto. Snow Crab Cakes (5 stars) - We love to order crab cakes anywhere we go. The crab cake itself tasted wonderful with a light outside crisp. What sets it apart from the rest is the lime zest cream. It's light with a balanced citrus flavor that I didn't miss the lemon wedge or sauce. Grilled Diver Sea Scallops (4 stars) - I ordered this last time. I love the curried corn sauce. It's doesn't over power the scallops, which were perfectly cooked. It was also accompanied with broccoli, mashed potatoes, and the scene stealing butternut squash puree. I'm actually not a big fan of butternut squash, but this puree was perfect. New Orleans Delight (3 stars) - I didn't want something chocolaty like the fudge pie or something usually on any dessert menu like creme brulee or tiramisu. I chose this dessert which included baked meringue, coffee ice cream, pecans, and caramel. The individual components were good but was too sweet all in one bite. So I tried focusing on the ice cream and caramel for a bit then switch to just the meringue. Service (5 stars) was wonderful once again. Our server was very nice and friendly. Since she knew we were celebrating a birthday and gave us a small bottle of cava to take home. The service was terrific! The manager greeted us upon arrival and we got a nice table. When the manager learned this was our first time, he shared the history of this lovely place. There was a nice young man who kept our water glasses filled which was very nice though I'm not a fan of cucumbers in my water. Our server was perky and attentive. Also, as everyone has said, the ambiance is wonderful! As For the food... 1) the menu on the outside in the glass should be updated. It showed most of the items that we had on the menu provided to us, but at higher prices. For example, it said the scallops were $28 but they were $31. 2) The bread was delicious! 3) For starters, we had the tomato tart on a bed of greens. Very nice. 4) Husband had the New York steak. He asked for it medium rare but it came medium. It was a good steak, just a bit over cooked. 5) I had the scallops. I love to order scallops! These were perfectly cooked but were smaller than I expected, especially for $31. Overall, it was a good experience, but a little pricey for the food we received. read more

Their New York Steak was fantastic !!! I had Chicken cordon bleu my friend had steak. We shared. We loved steak!! Crab Cake was good too. I found the place from groupon. They had good deal but when I made reservations I asked about deal. They said they have different deal in restaurant too. So next time when I go there I'll choose from the menu. Purchased a killer Groupon deal for the Ranch House and I planned a nice day walking around in Ojai ending with dinner here. (Check out my review of Topa Mountain Winery). Even without the Groupon it would've been a great deal! You can choose from a 3 course or 5 course meal at a fixed price, with many delicious options to choose from! The service is friendly, down to earth and prompt. The grounds are soo fun! In between courses we took our glasses of wine and walked around. I have been going to The Ranch House for at least 35 years. I go there probably 5-6 times each year. Went there recently to celebrate our 45 anniversary. The setting, of course is lovely, but .... the service was sub-par and the food was bland and tasteless!! Although, the original Pate was very good! The remainder of our meals was a great disappointment!!! I surely hope they step up their game!!! read more

We were in on Jan 12th 6 pm so it was already dark. There was a beautiful garden covered w lattice, vines, twinkle lights and heaters. The food was fabulas and everyone of our servers to include our primary Cora were very attentive. The manager Russ was very welcoming and pleasant. It seamed as thou they had some inside seating, and they featured Tango music and dance (Sun pm.) There also seamed to be garden grounds with bridges and decks, we can't wait to go back w friends as the days get longer and we can enjoy some light and some twilight. Thank you. read more
