Real Deal West Roxbury has gone downhill. It used to be my go to place for sandwiches. The two sandwiches we just ordered were so smothered in sauce, it was inedible. The sandwiches were drenched and dripping in sauce (1 had bbq sauce and the other pesto sauce). I don't see myself ordering here again. read more

I called on a Tuesday to ask what the process was to order approximately 50 sandwiches and some salads for a party I was having that Saturday. I was told it was OK to come in on Friday afternoon and order the food in person and pay for it to be then delivered the next day. I went into the store on Friday, the young man at the counter started to tell me that the menu that I was looking at was no longer the current catering menu. The prices were higher than he said and the person who normally dealt with the catering portion of the restaurant was not there. I asked to speak to somebody in charge, but there was no one there and it was only 1 PM. The person who normally deals with catering aspects had left early and I asked them to call her and he was not able to. I was given bad information on Tuesday and this was very frustrating because I depended on buying this food for the next day. I do not suggest doing catering with this company, they don't seem dependable in my eyes, and the young man at the counter was pretty much clueless when it came to what I needed. Every time I asked him a question his answer was "I don't know". They are also extremely overpriced because I went up the street to the supermarket ordered the same exact food. I'm so disappointed in the West Roxbury Real Deal lately. I have been coming here every Friday for pizza for years, but lately I have had more bad experiences than good. They've messed up my order several times recently and the quality of the food has gone downhill. I've had to ask them to remake my pizza twice this month, either because it was wrong or because it came out looking terrible. The front of house staff is always nice about it but that only goes so far. I am going to take a break and find another pizza place for a while. Bummer. read more

Running errands all morning and we needed lunch. Ordered online 2 BLTs and 1 cheeseburger without onions or tomatoes. A fairly easy process. Drove up and the place was really busy, a good sign. The people that ordered the BLTs were signing high praises, they were perfect, the best, well done! The burger was cooked to medium, a little too pink, it also had onions and tomatoes which made a simple burger a simple disappointment and worse than McDonald's. Dry, salty, and Kalamata olives instead of black olives despite reiterating that it was black olives we wanted. Very disappointing. Won't be ordering any more pizza here. Now, if I was here to review the sandwiches I would have to say creative, tasty, and loaded, a Real Deal! (Perhaps I'll come back another time to post that review.) After sitting, we were the the only people at in the dining area at that moment, the staff ( The cashier, and the staff in the back, minus the one in the way back) started snickering and making funny remarks while looking in our direction. They also took pictures and they were passing around the phone while laughing at it. This made me feel extremely uncomfortably. I believe they were making fun of my friend, who is an elderly woman with multiple handicaps. My husband got up to look at my friends back only to see that her blouse had rode up and pants were down low on her back. It revealed her scar and crack. She is 80 years old and this is not funny nor acceptable. Question for management if it were you the owners mom or grandmother how would you feel? It was extremely messed up. The recipe for the pizza dough has evolved and now the crust is more hollow and pastie in a bland way (what happened to the dough?). This afternoon we stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner. Haven't been in a while but we love their food. My husband ordered The Beast burger medium rare. I ordered the chicken bacon ranch slice heated. Well, the pizza was perfection. Huge slice. Husband's burger was also perfection. The burger was cooked perfect and the brisket was like butter. This is my go to pizza place for slices. They have a lot of variety and the slices are large and combinations are tasty. Crust is thin and chewy and crisp, sauce is flavorful, cheese is quality. I go to the West Roxbury location because, who knows what you might find at their sister bakery, Sweet, next door--- great deal is the 1$ Fazenda coffee! First time eating their pizza and salad The pizzas were hot and good. Nice meaty cheeses without the extra grease that normally drip off fatty pizza. The slices averaged fro super large to large so there was just the right slice amount for everyone. I didn't like the crust on the buffalo chicken pizza. I did like the crust better on the pepperoni pizza. My salad was the disappointment. I'm not sure if it was how the order was placed but it was the most naked chicken Caesar salad I'd ever seen. She said the price had changed but they hadn't fixed the board yet; she still charged me the over $14.00 price. At the VA hospital, there's only two types of food. One with flavor and one without. I'd take the one without because the 'flavor' is usually that of paste. Not sure what people are bitching about in the negative reviews here, but I can only say wonderful things. I placed an order online at 6:17pm. The food arrived in the hospital room at 6:43pm! It was exactly how we ordered it. My husband was inpatient at the VA hospital and the food there is abhorrent! The nurse suggested Real Deal because they order all the time from them. We got salads and a sandwich with a side of tater tots. We thought about ordering a cardiac burger, since they had a defibrillator right next to him with a team of staff to do CPR if his arteries spontaneously occluded. But we decided on the salad as to not piss off the doctor who could place him on house arrest with the dreaded 'cardiac diet' and charge me with aiding and abetting. The three stars are a combination of visits- Most five or four stars and once a one star flop. The good- in my experience, the food is always fresh and generous and a good representation of classics. You want a club sandwich, a slice or an Italian sub, you'll be happy. The bad- my last visit was a phone order- the reason for three stars. They are often very busy, and mistakes happen and of course people make mistakes. The person taking the order didn't verify the order and so we were missing one person's meal. We also got a sandwich wrong. They were very apologetic when I called. Phone orders are necessary if you want a substitute on an order such as rye when white is the standard or you'd want mustard instead of Russian dressing. Probably the tastiest evolution of a dining establishment is The Real Deal, located in the old Hanley's space and cojoined with its bakery sibling Sugar. The Real Deal Deal serves up a monsterous selection of sandwiches in the style of the old Brookline Spa, along with enough pizza to rival any place between the Roslindale line and Dedham. Sandwiches are made in almost any combination a diner could dream of, and feature always fresh ingredients. Pizzas are as big as even DeNo's and rival Tony's for taste and texture. About the only criticism might be the prices, which are what you'd expect perhaps in the more expensive suburbs. For what you're served across the counter, however, The Real Deal can stand with any sandwich shop in the greater Boston area for taste, creativity and selection.
