Terrible gym. Incompetent and rude staff. First time I've been kicked off a machine in 30 years of working out in gyms across the world...literally while in the middle of my set by an employee unracking my weights and telling me to get off cause they are moving the exact machine I was currently using,.. I only had two sets left, mind you, and my sweater was on machine, I was getting ready to sit in it and use it, and the employee starts unracking my weights. I said "excuse me, I am using this and he said well we are moving it"! Never ever would this happen at 24 hour fitness or any other commercial big or small private gym. They know how to put their patrons first at those other places. IF he actually was taught to put members first, he would've let me finish the extra three minutes it would have taken me to complete my sets... never going back here. Or they could've put a sign to not use machine, like all other gyms in the world do. I have been a personal trainer all my life and never have I witnessed anything like what happened to me here today. If you're serious about your workouts and your time in the gym, don't bother with this incompetent staff that doesn't know how to put paying members first. What I experienced today is like eating at a restaurant and while you're in the middle of taking a bite of your half eaten burger, the waiter comes to your table and grabs your plate with your fries from underneath you. Who does that? LOL. But that is not the worst of it.. after the manager talks to me, the rude employee that kicked me off my machine (older man) comes over to where I am and rolls his eyes and tells me "get over it"!!! I've never been spoken to so poorly by a grown man. Shame on him for speaking to a lady that way. Zero respect, zero common sense, zero gym etiquette or know how. These people are running a joke of an establishment and their employees know nothing about serious training or why people actually go to the gym and yet they work at a gym. Canceled my family's membership and never going back to this dump. read more

Pretty awesome place. Appears super clean. Has a nice indoor water park with a few slides and a basketball hoops area. Also a small outdoor splash pad area. This is overall a great facility. A great value for Grapevine residents at (currently) only $75 per year. Some people pay that for an entire month at a fancy big box gym! They have pretty much anything you could want, including well set up weight room, indoor track, plenty of cardio equipment, and racquetball courts. They also have a pool although that membership costs extra and I do not have it. Plenty of accessories like kettlebells, stretch bands, and exercise balls. They do have classes, but in my view this is where the value is not there. It's over $30 for just one class. I was thinking of trying Zumba or yoga, but not for that price. However, it's not a big issue. They have wifi and also some quiet places to sit. I have at times gone up there and worked when my home wifi was out. It's a nice option to have. I have noticed sometimes their trainers hoard weight equipment, which I don't appreciate. Please, only take one set of dumbbells at a time; maybe two if you are doing a superset, then put them back so others can use them. I am at the REC usually about 3-4 times a week and often see a lot of the same people there, so they definitely have their regulars in the community. Pro tip, go right when they open on the weekend (7 a.m.) as that's the least crowded time. read more

The indoor pool, lazy river and slides are a hit with our youngest and her friends. My little niece and nephew loved the kiddie swim area and after equipping them with the complimentary life vests, they loved the lazy river. Plenty of lifeguards and seating. If you want to swim laps, there are a couple of designated laps. There's a lot of equipment available in the gym and my husband and I go regularly. If you live in Grapevine, this is a no-brainer. Great gym. Clean facility. Friendly staff. Lots of activity options. And most importantly, extremely cheap (only for those who live in Grapevine, otherwise, you will be paying more). The only thing I want to mention that's a negative is, the closing times. I love the rec center at Grapevine. It has something for everyone. The way they thought out and planned each of the spaces is pretty cool. However, I do think they should have more mirrors in the dumbbells/weight areas. The locker room is nice bc you don't need to bring change or your own lock. It's always clean too. The Rec of Grapevine is turning into an over-crowded jungle gym for teenagers to play around on. Way overcrowded, lack of equipment, too many underage children, too many girls wanting to video their butts versus actually working out and way too much phone usage while sitting on machines doing nothing. It gets worse on a daily basis. Someone is going to get hurt with all of the kids running around and playing. Groups of boys taking up equipment for hours so no one else can work out and nothing is done about it. read more

Great selection of machines and super helpful staff. The only thing I can suggest constructively is to have some treadmills in a better ventilated area because it gets so stuffy with the plexiglass between machines! It's hard to breathe! Other than that, beautiful facility. read more

So I write this review as a parent of children who have been invited to birthday parties. We've been to two here, and my oldest went on her own with her aunt on a separate third occasion. So most of my experience is with the swimming area, swimming party area and the little play area up front. Though I don't have much interaction with areas outside of that, interaction with staff or price points. The party room was nice, you have it for an hour and a half, so both parties we went to kids did the celebrating first while they had the room. Then the kids got to go swimming, which my understanding is you can swim past that hour and a half ... as long as the swimming area is open for the rest of the day. One party a staff member was pretty involved in, another they would check in every now and then but generally left us to our own devices. I get the impression that it is pretty self service/run your own party unless you specifically ask for an extra set of hands carrying stuff in which based on my observation they are happy to help. The swimming area is very nice and seems well kept. I've seen ping pong tables in the general lobby areas just outside the doors of the party rooms. A couple older siblings of kids at a party we went to played ping pong until it was officially time to move into the pool. The little play area is nice but I'm unsure if its something you can just pop in and use randomly or if you need to be a member to use, or pay for a day pass. The times we've used it was when the kids got generally done swimming or the pool was closed due to a clean up situation we just dried off the kids, changed them and went to the play area. One parent mentioned you can rent that as a party option but I'm not sure about that so don't hold me to it. I keep meaning to go on our own to check it out but I keep forgetting! Good neighborhood facility for the price. Very popular which leads to crowding and wait times for machines and track. Don't know about gym demands. This facility needs more interaction with members and guests to use equipment and areas correctly. Rules are posted in all areas but not necessarily enforced. Lots of "sitting on machines while texting" or "waiting for exercise class to begin". Track abuse by chatting groups walking together across multiple lanes. Loud boom as weights drop repeatedly. Underage kids in wrong areas. Entry area has confusing sitting area with coffee and cookie offerings. Area dominated by newspaper reading "regulars". Perhaps healthy juice, water and energy snack choices would speak exercise! Areas seem clean and staff is friendly. So popular it needs expansion One year later I see NO improvements. Well, yogurt is offered instead of cookies in the one downstairs area dominated by a select group of seniors every morning. I wonder if the Senior Citizen center had coffee if some non-exercising patrons would migrate there. After meeting with one person in charge last year; I see no changes. If staff can't and won't monitor areas and coach patrons to follow rules in weight room and on the track, then please take down the few poorly located "Rules" signs. The Rec is as popular and crowded as ever. Choose the few nonbusy times if your schedule permits. read more

My family enjoys the rec! I wish it was a bit larger and included a tennis court, but overall it is well worth the fee for membership. The gym is a decent size, kids enjoy the pools, and two basketball courts are nice (multiple nets). Only prob is the one court where they have the volleyball net is isually over run by basketball players or by a group who hogs the court. The rec should enforce 30 min max games so everyone can play. I waited 2 hrs one night to play. Other than that it is a great local place for the fam to stay active and beat the TX heat! read more

Just joined and got the family "dry" plan. We use it every day. What a nice community feel and a beautiful building. I don't know why I didn't join sooner! My mom came in to town and did some silver sneakers classes, she enjoyed herself. They have a great senior program as well. read more

This place is awesome -- especially if you're a kid. I've never seen an indoor pool like this and it's amazing. Kids of all ages are swimming--they have a huge wading pool, indoor slide, an indoor/outdoor slide and a lap pool. This place is like the DMV of workout facilities. I don't know if it's the management or the people that are hired, but there is a general malaise over the whole place. Employees barely give a shit about what's going on. They sit behind their counters only springing to action when one of their many rules is broken. "No kids on the track unsupervised even though you are 10 feet away", "no kids in the hot tub even though it's 95 degrees", "no kids on the indoor playground alone without buying a kids pass". I think they should have a big meeting where they all pull the sticks out of each other's ass. Maybe then they can talk about customer service. This is what happens when places that should be privately owned are ran by the government. Too many rules, not enough vision or passion. They can't even figure out how to cancel my damn membership....... End rant. read more

New building is beautiful but they need more space and better air flow for the workout area. They could have easily doubled the size and done away with some of the conference type areas. Really like the walking track and the gym portion is nice just not big enough during normal busy hours and a bit cramped. No open areas for stretch and cool downs. Great price for the services assuming it is not crowded. read more

My family joined this year and it has been a great place for our family to go. The child watch allows us to workout while the kids are well taken care of. Then we often utilize the pool area after the our workouts to have some fun play time with our kids. The gym is fine for cardio or your average weight training. It's real nice to have the indoor track to run on as well. One of the main things about this gym is the variety of activities it has. I have a crossfit gym to get my intense training done but I can come here to have a fun active time with my family. read more

We've been going to The Rec since they've opened and have been generally pleased with the facility. Pros: COST--at $120/year for the whole shebang, you're not going to get better pricing or amenities at ANY national gym chain. I've been a member at Gold's, Lifestyles, and a few privately owned gyms and you're going to spend $30/month min, so the pricing here for residents is awesome! Equipment--most of the equipment is new or fairly and it's rare that we come across something that doesn't work or is out of order. Sometimes the tv channels don't come in, but I don't go the gym to watch tv. Free towels--It's nice not having to bring one. Cons: Kids--specifically children on equipment like bikes, treadmills, or ellipticals. This shouldn't be allowed PERIOD. I don't care that it's a family oriented center, the kids are going to get hurt or worse. Plus at peak time I shouldn't have to wait for a 10 year-old to be done PLAYING to start my workout. Hopefully this will change when school starts. Ventilation--every time I get home, my lungs feel like I swam 3 miles even though I never enter the pool. The equipment room obviously needs better air flow if I'm breathing in so much chlorine. Family pricing--apparently Grapevine doesn't consider married couples a family, so we had to pay for two individual memberships even though we always go together. Small thing, but a break for two names on one account would be nice. Hours--Is it because the bible thumpers are in church until 3 on a Sunday, but why can't I work out before noon (when every other day is 5am or 7am)? Closing at 7pm on the weekends is odd also (especially Friday) and if it's a staffing issue, then I see PLENTY of staff not doing anything most of the time, so you probably could adjust your hours along with your staffing model. read more

I've been a member here for almost a year. That being said, as good as some of these reviews portray the REC, I feel like I need to make people aware of some facts that would have helped me in making my decision to pay for a membership here. 1. An employee mentioned to me last week that there are now 23,000 people who use this facility. Because of this, the small number of treadmills they have are typically always in use. They have plenty of room to add more but just haven't, so a lot of the time you're left waiting for one for over 30 minutes. There are 3x more bikes than treadmills. 2. They have 3 workout studios upstairs, but strangely 2 of them are "never open to the public". Most of the time those 2 are locked, empty and dark inside and when I ask if I can workout in one, the employees say that I can't. Yesterday there was a REC trainer using the ONLY room that "is open to the public" for I think a private training session and I was told nobody else was allowed in there while the session was happening. That's fine! I'll be flexible. So when I asked if I could go into one of the other studios that were locked and dark, the employee said no because the public can't use them. This makes no sense lol. It's happened several times. 3. The hours are really inconvenient. Closing at 10pm during the weekdays and 7pm on weekends is awful, and again, so inconvenient. Especially for people who work all day. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to get a workout in on a Friday or Sunday night but I can't because the gym is closed. 4. A guest pass for a friend visiting in town is $10 a day. I paid $70 for the entire year so this makes NO sense! 5. Don't go at busy times (AKA 4:00pm - 9pm) and expect to get on popular machines right away or lift weights under 20lbs in the weight area. You may get lucky. Maybe. 6. Wifi never works. Overall I guess I'm pretty frustrated. For $70 it's very much a "get what you pay for" kind of place. Sometimes a big waste of my time when I can't even get a run in because everything's so packed. There is not much more that you can ask for in a REC. It gives me a great sense of pride to be a resident of the city and to have the opportunity to take advantage of the Vine Pass. For $485 -which, by the way, my husband's company FULLY reimbursed us for, our entire family has access ALL amenities at the REC, a child watch pass for both children, we can visit any of Grapevine's outdoor pools as many times as we like, AND we will not have to pay for admissions to Lake Parks whereas others may have to pay a nominal admission fee. Additionally, we get discounted rental rates for REC and Grapevine facilities for family events. The best spa experience I have had was at the Westin Kierland Resort Spa in Scottsdale, AZ, this place really gives them a run for their money as the REC is family-oriented and encourages a consistently, daily active lifestyle. 1 Family Annual REC Vine Pass membership=1 day stay and 1 spa treatment at the Scottsdale Kierland Resort. The workout facility - They must read these reviews because now there are huge industrial fans throughout the workout area. People actually respect the 30 minute request for equipment, I have yet to see children in this area, and there are friendly people at the desk ready to help and guide you. I like the setup. It's nice to be able to watch the Food Network while burning calories. People are super respectful. Also, the view of the happy children and senior citizens at the pool below has made me smile on the inside many times. The pool area - The family changing room is very nice. Great quality shampoo, ALWAYS clean -never the weird smell, the lockers are huge, and it's thoughtful to have a machine that extracts water from the swim suits! 5 stars for sure, you won't find a better REC family changing room anywhere! These lifeguards are phenomenal. They watch every kids like a hawk and they will blow that whistle and get after the kids about safety:) What parent couldn't respect/appreciate this? They're also very friendly, but obviously, not overly friendly because their first concern is for the safety of all children. The slide is too wonderful for words. My kids love it! They are extremely attentive to the guest experience also. They genuinely make the membership fee worth the cost. Excellent job!!! My favorite thing is to watch the Senior Citizens in the lazy river exercising in the mornings, they prance around the pool like reindeer so joyful. The hot tub, while not for my children, is so relaxing and secluded almost. The Gyms, Racquetball courts, ping pong tables, computers, TVs for video games & cartoons for kids, the breakfast/lunch area, the COMFY library with fireplace, dance studios, community learning rooms with computers and floor-to-ceiling windows, new events rooms (gasp) with kitchen, this list could go on and on. Really it could. You will use your membership everyday. Whether your family pays $300 for the whole shebang, $200 for the aquatic only membership or $170 for the dry fitness membership, you will love it. Talk to Danielle, she registered our family and is the MOST friendly and engaging staff member there. She can hip you to everything you need to know. After reading The Blue Zones, I started to appreciate what the city is attempting to do. Great job. FYI - The author, Buettner, has led teams of researchers across the globe--from Costa Rica to Sardinia, Italy, to Okinawa, Japan and beyond--to uncover the secrets of Blue Zones - areas with the highest concentration of citizens that live long, long, long, long, long lives. This place is a HUGE improvement over the last place. HUGE, and I cannot emphasize that enough. It has an indoor track, multiple basketball courts, racquetball courts, workout studios, a water park type thing for kids and family, and a gym. There's so much that I'm probably missing something. That said, the gym is a little small and could use a little bit more space for mats, stretching, and core work. They have an area, but it fits two people (max), and the mat is really puffy. You can use two of the studios, when they're not hosting a class, but most the time (after 5) there is a class. There is no online schedule of classes, so that's an inconvenience. It's a nice facility, new, good equipment, very much a family type of place, and quite inexpensive. I would recommend joining. My only complaints are the seemingly large number of staff and their lack of oversight of the facilities. The only staff member who regularly enforces rules is an older man who works on the second floor sometimes. Kids often kick volleyballs and misuse equipment on the volleyball side and kids run wild on the track with no parental supervision, often the wrong way, but there are no staff enforcing rules and the kids at the desk just sit there on the computer or folding towels. This is almost a daily problem. Most staff seem to sit around. However, most of them are friendly. read more

This is a nice, low key gym to work out at. It's not glamorous, but has all the necessities for a great work out. Very family oriented!
