MY COMFORT PLACE!! So affordable with plentiful belay options. Auto belay is my preferred climbing type, so this place is the perfect for me. It does get hot, so wear light. They have those big industrial fans to help with the heat, so feel free to sit near those when you rest. Bouldering is limited, but enough to satisfy the passion. I usually go on weekday afternoons, so it's not crowded at all. I can't speak for weekends and evenings, though. They're closed at the moment due to an unexpected rooftop fire, so I hope they open soon (safely) so we can continue and support this amazing gym. read more

Had an incredibly fun, SAFE and exhilarating time at DYNO ROCK today. As you park, don't get discouraged by the external part of the building. You're there to climb, not host a wedding. The entrance is located on the other side of their private parking lot adjacent to Front Street. Upon entering the facility, we were immediately welcomed by Josh, who helped us with filling out the safety disclosure stuff. We were put into our harnesses and whisked away to safety training. He scaffolded the instructions so well, a dummy could do it. Before he let us off on our own, he had to observe me and my friend get up the wall correctly climbing and belaying the correct way. Once we passed the test, we started choosing different walls to climb. Neither of us had ever climbed before, but we were fit enough to get to the top of a few rookie walls which boosted our egos to try the more challenging walls. Big mistake. Lol. Good for beginner climbers, not so much for experienced climbers. If you're wanting to visit during the summer months, be aware that the air conditioning in this facility is fairly weak, I estimate the temperature inside was probably from 80°F to 85°F. Bring your own water bottles, because as of the time of me writing this review (6/17/2020), COVID-19 has shut down their water fountains. For beginner climbers, this facility will be plenty of fun since there are about 25 different ropes set up as well as bouldering downstairs and upstairs. This location has 8 auto-belays (machines that allow you to climb without needing a partner), which I saw a lot of kids enjoy using. For experienced climbers, I recommend going to Summit or Oso. I barely saw any routes rated 5.10 or higher, and their routes seemed to never be updated. Maybe it's due to Coronavirus, but from looking at the labels for when all the routes were set, the most recent I could find was early March. There were a bunch of routes from November 2019 that were still up (I'm writing this review in mid June 2020). The routes are also marked by colored tape extending from holds, rather than the holds themselves being colored. This was not a problem to me, but it could be unusual to some climbers. There were plenty of auto-belays, but all but one route were levels 5.9 or lower, which probably is below the skill levels of many experienced climbers. I also did notice that many people wore tennis shoes while climbing instead of climbing shoes. Wash your hands frequently lol. Would I return? Yeah, but probably because other people initiated it. There's nothing wrong with Dyno-Rock per se, I just live nearer to other climbing gyms and like their set-ups better. read more

I bought a Groupon to try out this place and I'm glad I did. My boyfriend and I went around 7pm on Saturday. It wasn't very busy which made it great for our first time. The staff was very helpful and explained everything thoroughly. I was nervous and she was very patient in helping. The rock climbing choices are various ones for different levels so there's something for everyone. The only reason I give 4 stars is because there were several self auto belay that were not working. read more

I was in town for a few days and there was no way I was going to miss having a chance to try out a climbing gym in Texas! So I thought I'd check out the Dyno-Rock Climbing Center. The prices aren't bad either. A day pass cost $12 and shoes cost $5, and the whole package (day pass, shoes, chalk, and harness) cost $20 dollars. That is a good deal if you plan on top-roping and if you need chalk. It is a decent sized gym with both a top roping area and a Bouldering area. They also have auto belay so you don't always need someone there, plus it's fun. Definitely give it a try! Staff were very friendly and helpful ever since I first stepped to the register. The guy that helped us knew that it was our first time there, so every once in awhile, he came over to see how we're doing. What was also so nice about it was that they provided water with tiny little cups near the sitting area. The gym in general was only okay. I wasn't "wowed" by it, but it definitely was not a bad gym. I just didn't like it as much if I were to compare it to the other gyms that I have been to including my own. But this gym would not be at the bottom of my list. The routes at the time of my visit, was a bit on the softer side. I was able to easily do some of their routes that were labeled "V4," when usually, I would have such a hard time with it at other gyms. Don't get me wrong, it's not super easy, just easier than the ones that I tried at other places. It was still a lot of fun. One thing though is that it was so hot in there! I felt like there was absolutely no ventilation or something. I'm not sure how it is in the winter, but I came in the summer and it was just so hot. However, I would still recommend this gym to anyone that wants to try indoor rock climbing. And you should definitely try it. It's something fun and different. Good times for those daring and or wondering about climbing. Great place for beginners to indoor climbs. Fees are decent. All costs included it's about $20 per person / day.. One needs a harness, shoes, hand chalk and something else.. (I forgot already) Check their website, the details are out there. Also have a look at Yelp photos. The building is nondescript. Pulling up, I wasn't sure what we were looking for and without a GPS we wouldn't have found this place unless calling for directions first. Parents can join in the fun or strap on a harness and assist as a "climber helper". (Assisting as a helper hasn't any cost. But requires some instruction. Helpers also have to be at least 14 years of age or older. Some climbs require helpers, some don't and others have a weighted system so that children and others can work alone.) Depending on the weight of your child or climbing mate, you'll get a nice workout on those "guns." Well, decent anyway. It's the holidays and the kids were restless. Days upon days spent playing Minecraft.. (I don't get the fascination.) An activity was needed and this popped up as a local option. Score! Uncle time - go! After a couple hours of climbing, the kids were ready for a meal and then home. read more

So much fun! I love this place for rock climbing, It's definitely a must for an active date night. It's the best excuse to stare at your date's butt while you're belaying them. It's not the biggest facility but it's definitely big enough to keep you busy for a few hours. 2 serious issues: I'm an experienced indoor climber (climbing in the Upper 5.11 to 5.12- range based on the 8 or so gyms I've climbed at) and a newer outdoor climber who's very particular about safety and best practices, and also someone who enjoys a legit challenge. Here's my beef with this gym. 1. If you want to learn how NOT to belay someone on top rope (keep your climber from falling), then don't climb here. Every top rope station has a tether to the floor (fine but not needed), and a Grigri (belay device that stops a fall with an auto-locking mechanism). The issue is, they teach you to use it UPSIDE DOWN or sideways against the manufactures instructions. Literally pulling the rope directly up and over your shoulder. What?? Then, when your climber descends, they tell you to simply pull the brake release lever without holding the rope. The issue is, the Grigri is a BACK UP device. You still should be in the brake position at all times unless you are pulling rope with the Grigri brake closed away from you. And when you lower, the rope should be to the right and running directly over the metal plate to create the correct friction for the device to work properly. The staffer said "the Grigri does all the work." No, it does not. Not using it correctly creates all sorts of safety issues, one being that as you pull slack in incorrectly, the rope could get caught in the brake lever and keep it in the open position, therefore not arresting a fall, and since anyone trained here only relies on the Grigri, they wouldn't even know how to stop the fall. 2. The routes are pretty bad for anyone who's climbed more than 3 months. Every route I climbed was set within the last 30 days by the same route setter (JC) and every route rated below 5.11 had a MASSIVE dyno or double dyno move somewhere in the route (and most in places that didn't make sense and weren't fun and didn't line up with the grade). The rest of the route was way below the grade (like beginner level). Most of their holds are the same or similar and the gym just showed a comple lack of creativity and simply fun in climbing which is what climbing is all about. All the other reviews are right too. Very dirty, odd entrance that looks like you are coming into an industrial work plant, and uneducated staff that clearly doesn't take climbing seriously. Overall I didn't have any fun climbing here, and I love climbing. I would never come back unless they changed management. read more

Do yourself a favor and not bring your excited kids here! I bought a groupon pass and was told they won't take it unless you book the reservation in advance. I understood the policy, however they Did Not have to be RUDE about it and could have be more professional. It seemed as if we were wasting their precious time (when the place look vacant) and they only have two walls to climb on. They were very rude, unprofessional, and unapologetic about their fine print. Better management, empathy, and better communication skill should be enforced to this little hole in the wall place. With today's technology and rating system a small place like this should be excited about there new customers. Yet they get a poor review. We had canceled our group and got a refund due the poor service. And would never come back. My kids were very disappointed and sadden about the situation so I took them to Summit rock climbing and it was amazing experience. read more

They had really terrible service. I was in town visiting, and when we arrived they said they were very busy and required reservations. I had reviewed the FAQs on their website, and their was no mention of reservations. Moreover, the website didn't have an online booking system to make a reservation ahead of time. My husband and I went to Dyno-Rock for about six months because we got a 10-visit punch card. We enjoyed our time while we were there but were ready to try other climbing gyms. The staff members are really nice and I am really thankful that they were watchful and monitoring us while were climbing because I didn't realize I was belaying incorrectly and could have gotten my husband hurt. The 3 stars is more for the facility itself as it's really dingy and unclean feeling. The routes are not changed that often, aren't well-maintained (we've come across lose holds while climbing), and are not always well marked. Dyno-Rock and I go way back- after I first caught the climbing bug in Yosemite at age eight or so, it was my first surrogate back home. That isn't to say that Dyno remotely compares to Yosemite.... haha. No. But as far as accessibility for practice goes... five stars. It's what I'll have to be satisfied with in DFW. However, they do need to check their routes more often. Marking tape is often rubbing off, forcing your friends and yourself to wonder if you actually conquered the route or if you partially free-footed it. And every time I've been here (over twenty, at least) there's been a loose handhold. Not good. Every time I find one it gives me a momentary panic attack and almost lose my eight-year-old-optimism about the place. If they'd just screw things in a little better I'd be happy camper (or climber). Their auto-belay routes are super fun to race up! read more

If you are just getting into Bouldering this is not the place for you. There are many routes to the top but only few that are V1. I did not see any V2 routes marked on any of the walls. There are multiple V3 and higher difficulty routes to try. But as a beginner you will just frustrate yourself with these. I would recommend Summit Climbing in Denton for a great place to start a beginner into bouldering. At least on the bouldering side this is a great place for highly experienced climbers. Also make sure to bring your own chalk as none was offered with the equipment. read more

Okay, it hurts me to do this, but I have to seriously downgrade this place because the people running things seem to have stopped caring about...well, everything. -The last few times I've come here, the courses weren't marked very well, and there were spinners all over the place. - They seem to have issues with the A/C regularly. -Also, they got rid of the auto belaying devices because they were too costly to maintain. This is a bummer, but I won't hold it against them. -The one nice thing I can say is: I found out that if you're a member, they'll let you buy climbing shoes through them at a pretty good discount -- better than any prices I've seen online or at any sporting goods stores. -I'll return those stars when they start to make an effort! I bought tickets for this place on groupon for my sister and I and we had a great time attempting to climb up the walls. It was awsomely adventrous to try something new and the staff was able to explain everything pretty easily. I am utterly soar but we will definitely do it again. My only so called complaint is I wish they had more auto belayers except one wall. An unfortunate situation arised where we had our drinks on the table and a another family's kids came and drank our drinks. I comfronted the "adult/mom" in the group and she started callin me a lier and cussing me out even though she was right there with her kids letting them drink it. Yeah great mother eh. I told management and they made them leave and gave us new drinks so they handled that situation well but apparently the ghetto mexican family had caused other trouble too. So zero stars to them but awesome stars for management for handling unruly people. read more

Bought a groupon to go rock climbing. The staff was nice and helpful. After signing the waiver, there was a short course about how to belay. Went rocking climbing with 3 adults and 2 kids. We had a blast! There are several different stations to climb catering to different skill levels. At times, there was a short wait before a climb. This is a great gym. The staff working there now is a helpful, friendly and fun group. Most of the time you can go to climb alone and will be able to find someone who will be more than happy to help you out and belay for you. They also have some auto belays just in case. There setters are probably some of the best around, but be weary after a comp, sometimes it can take a while to reset a wall. Also, as it's pretty common everywhere so I don't really sweat it, but some holds my be loose so be careful. If you alert the staff they will take care of it immediately. If your not so keen on sharing a gym with the younger ones I would avoid this place Tuesday and Thursday night because that's when the team practices, other than that, this place ROCKS! read more

I came here with Tiffany D. and we had a blast. The workers were knowledgeable, friendly and offered help without being annoying. There are certain areas (upper level and cross fit/weights) that are reserved only for members. The rest of the gym is open to everyone. I do like how water is offered because Dyno Rock was humid and hot even with three large fans blowing. The walls offered (16,000 sq ft) varying difficulty with plenty of choices that I wasn't bored after two hours. I've only been to 1 other rock gym and that's back in Gainesville, FL which offered more free climbing area. read more

Typically it takes a lot for me to leave a 1 star review because I know how much it can affect a business. This place is poorly managed. We bought a Groupon and when we arrived to the near empty facility we were told we needed to make a reservation. They said that's because they needed to be sure there was someone to train us.... even though the building only had 4 other people. Of course they said we could climb if we paid full price... which didn't make any sense at all. When my husband asked to talk to the manager it got worse. She had zero business sense and said the reason she couldn't make an exception was because "it's business". She had a teenage like attitude and was very rude. read more

We just tried to go today, February 2018, and we were turned away because reservations are now required to use a Groupon. Very disappointing. This place is awesome! It was my first time climbing rocks, and because it was our first time here, we had to go through the mandatory safety course. We had a cool trainer. I had a great time! Prices were reasonable and there were enough places for a weenie like me to climb, while allowing more experienced climbers to have fun, too. Small restroom. I have been here many times and generally have had good experiences. Today I came and planned to use my Groupon which I have done in the past. Apparently they have recently changed their policy on Groupon and now require that you schedule an appointment 24 hours in advance. They explained that they did this to prevent lack of availability and I understand and agree that t the policy makes sense. My point of contention is that last time I used a Groupon here this was not the policy. We arrived at 5:30 and they close at 7:00 so there was only an hour and a half left to climb. They were by no means packed as there we only 5-6 other climbers here. I asked if they could make an exception and they refused so I had to pay full price to keep my commitment to my 14 year old daughter and her friend. They could have easily made an exception and I would have been aware of the new policy for future visits and gladly abided by that policy but they chose to give very poor customer service. I will be seeking other venues in the future due to their lack of willingness to work with me. So heads up, be sure you plan at least 24 hours in advance if you come here. Very disappointing for the family event. I took my family and kids here to have a fun afternoon. When we approached the counter we immediately got rejected and was told to read the fine print on Groupon. Instead of scheduling us for the following day the rude personnel didn't seem to want our business and moved on to the next person. I wanted further information regarding their policy, again they were short with me and told me to read the fine print. My kids were very disappointed and started crying. We decided to go to Summit Climbing instead and they greeted us with open arms and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. I was a member here for 4 months. The best way to describe this place is as a crossfit gym with a very old climbing wall. It has been taken over by crossfit people who don't even notice that you are climbing. There is one nice guy (Josh) who sets routes, not nearly often enough. The other people who work here were pretty consistently ambivalent/rude to us- even as members. This place is way, way too hot in the summer. I shiver to think what it is like in the winter- as the only climate control that I can see is 3 industrial fans. What eventually made us leave, aside from finding Summit in Grapevinve (a longer drive but a MUCH better gym), was that the ropes in this place look about 15 years old. They ALL have flat spots- and I just feel like this place is dangerous. Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport, but your gym should try to minimize this risk, not maximize it. Bottom line: Climb at your own risk! read more

First time in a gym, I've done multi pitch trad climbing for years in OK and SoCal, but am now in Arlington. Not a bad place all in all; seems like most of the holds were worn out and could use a good washing or replacing. Holds and walls need re-texturing as well. I'll go back since the closest real stone is in Oklahoma. Went the afternoon of 8/19 and it did not seem that hot. Gym climbing is a different animal than real rock, that is for sure. I'm used to climbing vertical rock or less; cracks, slabs or face. Over-hanging climbs burn me out quickly. Staff seemed decent; the people I was with go there frequenty as it is near their home, so we did not need a lot of attention. read more

My family and I went here tonight. This place is awesome. My daughter hates sports but this place changed her mind. She found a new love for rock climbing. With the help of her dad building her confidence, she was able to reach the top and smile. From there she kept challenging herself. She wants to come back again. We will definitely be there. I'm by no means a professional climber but I have been climbing for over 25 years and I know my way around multiple belay devices and how to safely and appropriately use them in the way that the manufacturer has designed them to be used. That being said, I was very concerned today when I went to this facility and saw multiple people using the facility's belay device of choice, the Petzl Grigri 2, incorrectly and unsafely. I saw a dad belaying his daughter and he repeatedly took both hand off the rope to reach up and pull the rope down and then would let go again and then use both hands leap frog style to pull the rope from the belay side of the grigri, I saw a lady have her grigri backwards as though she were left-handed but wasn't and was constantly struggling with the device because she was trying to belay as though she were right handed, I saw a lady shoving the rope through the grigri trying to lower her partner to the ground and I saw a guy belaying with the rope over his shoulder holding the belay end of the rope straight up in the air. These are just a few of the unsafe things I noticed today. After watching the dad belay his daughter in a very sketchy fashion I asked one of the employees to watch him belay for a minute because it didn't look right. The conversation happened as such, E: "He just went through a belay course, but it probably looks weird to you because we don't teach them how to belay correctly." Me: "Excuse me?" E: "We teach them how the owner told us because it's easier and we were having incidents with people trying to do it the right way." Me: "But that's not how that device is designed to be used by the manufacturer and it's not safe." E: "Well, we haven't had any accidents yet with how we're teaching them, we don't get real climbers in here, we get Groupon people who are never going to go outside and really climb so it's ok" Me: "No, that's not ok, you're knowingly and admittingly teaching people an incorrect and unsafe way to belay." E: "I don't have much experience out of the gym I've only been in the industry for a couple of years now so this is what I know, I can understand your concern to an extent but we don't have real climbers here so we don't really see a problem with what we are doing." I then walked away because I couldn't believe the insanity of the conversation!! I asked for contact information for the owner at the front desk and while one guy went to find it the other guy asked if there was a problem and I told him that I had made some observations that I wanted to share about safety and he asked what they were and I shared them with him and he reiterated the previous employees statements. The other employee came back stating that he couldn't find the contact information I needed. I find it rather odd that the employees couldn't provide me with the name or a number for the owner of the gym but suggested I email the general info email on the website. I'm not normally a person to leave a review or make a fuss, but this situation was ridiculous and potentially life-threatening and that's not ok. read more

Went to this place and was really disappointed with the way that it looked. It was shady and dirty. My sister and I brought our own gear but they didn't have anymore waivers...or so they say. I walked around to take a look and everything looked as if it was not kept up, the routes set looked like they didn't know what they were doing, the way the top ropes were hung on a pipe in the ceiling and not on a proper top rope device and the rope wasn't wrapped around twice which adds safety to the climber. If they even have the waivers, we wouldn't have climbed anyways since it looked so bad. I believe that the employee saw us with our bags and didn't want us there because maybe we looked like we knew how to properly belay and climb. I'm just taking a wild guess due to reading the bad reviews about how they are improperly teaching the beginners how to belay correctly. I didn't waste my time to try and figure that part out bc I had made up my mind that I'm never going to this place. read more
