GOOD coffee is an art. A science. If you are striving to produce something outside of the "fast food coffee" that is found on every corner (starbucks, caribou..etc) then you really need to know what you are doing. I am really enjoying this trend of good coffee places starting to pop up in and around the Detroit area. Pinwheel still serves a slimmed down selection of their yummy baked goods (this morning the case was full of scones, pull aparts, cookies, etc - I heard they will also serve sandwiches around lunch time and maybe even a selection of Bagels from Detroit Institute of Bagels***). And yes...that kind of sassy attitude is still present with the Pinwheel employees. Whatever...I am willing to accept it for a good cup of coffee and delish baked goods. The Red Hook is serving Stumptown Coffee**** (brewed, pour over drip and espresso). Apparently all their milk is from Guernsey Farms Dairy - which I really love and appreciate the local milk aspect. Wow. I am really chatty in this review. I guess you are wondering - Was the coffee good? I hate to say this...but....it was so/so. Like I said before GOOD coffee is an art. I am not really sure if the employees at the coffee bar were really "experts" in their art or if they just wanted to kind of capitalize on the ever growing interest in a good cup of coffee. I got hooked on Stumptown coffee when I was out visiting Portland a few years ago so I'd be happy to give The Red Hook the thumbs up on that alone. Luckily they also carry the Pinwheel goodies that I love and all at pretty reasonable prices for the quality. When I heard they would be renovating I was a little sad that the adorable decor of Pinwheel would be going away (what can I say, I love things that are twee and precious) but luckily they kept a lot of that charm while updating it to be a little more grown up friendly. The blue paint inside is soothing and perfect for creating an atmosphere worth spending time in and relaxing. They still have the little bench seating by the windows for the kiddos but now with more regular adult seating--perfect for sipping coffee and enjoying a treat. I also loved the current window displays--filled with birch branches, fluffy fake snow, and glass jars. Very DIY and beautiful. I'm so happy to have all these wonderful, unique coffee shops popping up around town and I'm thrilled to add Red Hook to the list. Especially if they keep that Stumptown coming! read more

The Red Hook may be small but don't let it fool you, it is packed with all the good stuff you look for in a coffee shop. Brewed coffee, pour over, lattes, cold drinks, etc. The baked goods section isn't even just muffins and bagels. There's every baked good you can imagine - and many of the options are vegan! I've had countless goodies from the counter, and while somewhat expensive, they are all delicious and I've never regretted my choice. The staff is also always extremely inviting and friendly. They keep the line moving (if there is one) but still will take the time to help you make a selection if you're trying to decide or don't know what to go with. For a busy Saturday, they were efficient and quick with service and our orders. The teas we got were tasty and the cake and bar were so delicious! My mom had the salted caramel chocolate cake! Yum!! I couldn't stop, and she had to away me away so she could enjoy it! I had the chai iced tea, which I forgot to ask for soy, but they were very happy to accommodate. Closest thing I've found to a Portland coffee shop since living in Michigan. I love that they rotate roasters (they had Stumptown and Water Ave for awhile, both of which I love). I've only had a couple of their pastries but they always look delicious. They have a few small tables and WiFi. The barista I had loves coffee and knows how to pull a shot correctly, which made the Cortado taste as good as the hairbender espresso blend can get. The Red Hook and Pinwheel bakery share the same space, which makes for delicious pastry options. I tried the egg, potato and basil inside a tasty butter flaky croissant type thing. Coffee is wonderful (Stumptown) and the pastries are great too! Pastries are from Pinwheel Bakery - there were savory and sweet choices (Macarons, cookies, etc) when I went. I had the open-faced veggie galette and it was out of this world - get it toasted, you won't regret it! The coffee shop is dedicated to being green too, which is a plus in my book. They use tableware when you're staying awhile, and have compostable cups for those on the go. One big downer is the internet is horrendous - it didn't even work in the hours I was there. Scones are the true testament to a bakery: few can do them light, crumbly and airy inside without also drying them out. I wasn't here when it was still just pinwheel, but i assume they've always been this delicious. Caramel whoopie pie: amazing. And the lemon coconut bar is melt in your mouth scary. The price is average, coffee is above average depending on what you get. All of it is good, though! The mocha is yummy. They make little designs in the foam for a unique experience. I really love this place. It's probably my favorite area coffee house. They have a great iced chai latte and iced matcha latte. And all of their baked goods and pastries are fresh, interesting, and delicious. They have a salted chocolate chip cookie that I get almost every time. And if they have the pistachio tea cake on offer; get it. The staff is usually incredibly friendly and personable, which is a nice change from the disaffected hipster attitude some of these places can have. There is a certain genuine warmth from the staff that I greatly appreciate. The only reason I'm not rating The Red Hook five stars is the lack of seating. I wish they could figure out a way to fit a few more tables and chairs in there, but it's an oddly shaped space. In the summer, there are extra tables outside, which helps. Friendly, engaging, patient, and helpful staff. We were in town visiting for the first time. The special was a beet root (powder) latte with cardamom and ginger. I ordered mine with coconut milk. It was delicious!! (The right amount of sweetness too.) The Superfood cookie was perfect. Not too sweet and with the right amount of ingredients. I live 2 miles south of Ferndale and was looking for a coffee spot other than Starbucks to do some quiet computer work. I found this quaint Spot by searching yelp and reading some great reviews. And they did not disappoint! . I'm very particular about chai tea since I was a barista in college at a family coffee/bagel place...and by far, this place did not disappoint and had just the amount of well frothed milk. I stayed for a little over an hour enjoying a small table and the hustle and bustle. There was always a line, but never a wait! Oh! I start almost every day with a walk to Red Hook. The coffee is excellent and it's fun to see what baked goods they will have that day; it's never the same day to day. I've heard people complain that the food is overpriced, but IMO, you are definitely getting what you pay for. These are special, beautifully made and presented baked goods, which taste as good as they look. On a day when things aren't going well, or I am in a general funk, I pop in for a quick treat, and my day is instantly better. The staff are courteous and very friendly. The Red Hook - didn't know till today that it took over the Pinwheel! A lovely place seems the same as Pinwheel. I was "checking in" and yelp telling me Pinwheel is closed ??? Huh? So the employee and my 6 year old pointed out to me that it's now "the red hook". Ahhhh. They have the coolest cash register I ever saw! The drawer is hidden below the counter and someone engineered a flip pad (so to say) that an iPad is mounted. All transactions are done on the iPad screen and the cashier simply flips/tilts the iPad in your direction for signatures and u use your finger to sign (if paying by card). read more

I've been to both the Red Hook in Ferndale as well as the Detroit one. I prefer the Detroit one as it's a bit bigger and more open. The baristas are also much friendlier. Some may consider it a bit pricey for coffee but you can definitely tell that the quality is top notch. Its not at all bitter tasting like Starbucks, which is about the same, price wise. I know the one in Ferndale has free wi-fi so I'm sure the one in Detroit does too. Both have delicious looking pasteries. I seriously want to try everything. They have brownies, biscuits, muffins and the best looking donuts and you can tell they are made fresh daily. Bonus: they make your coffee with a pretty flower design. Fabulous coffee / tea / pastry shop in Ferndale! Try their homemade syrups in your drink, you won't be disappointed. It's a small place - maybe 8 tables that each seat 2-4 people. In warmer months they have a few tables outside. It always smells good! They offer delicious pastries - both savory and sweet. I get their tea lattes with lavender syrup - they're delicious! I haven't ever tried any of the espresso drinks or the coffee but friends say they are good. It's a great place to meet a friend to catch up! Expect to wait for a table if they're busy - people love to work from here sometimes. Since red hook is right in the middle of Ferndale, there are plenty of benches nearby or you could walk through the surrounding shops. I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area. read more

I can't say enough about The Red Hook! On short notice I contacted The Red Hook about baking vegan desserts for my sister's wedding shower. This was 1 week before the shower and on the SAME DAY the bakery I originally had canceled on me. I needed all vegan desserts made for around 40 women for my sister's wedding shower. The Red Hook assured me that they could fulfill my order and have it fresh and done the morning of the shower. Not only did they have all the vegan desserts ready for me, but they also had the desserts nicely displayed in the container they gave me. They gave me a variety of vegan desserts! Most places I called only had one or two vegan desserts to choose from. (I believe about 7 different varieties of vegan desserts were in the container) The guests at the shower could not believe the desserts where all vegan and asked what high-end/expensive bakery I ordered them from!! I certainly could not beat the price, quality, taste and the amount received! I had more than enough desserts for everyone to have more than one. I even sent some home with a few guests and took some home myself. I looked all over the Metro Detroit area and it was very difficult to find a bakery who had vegan desserts. My sister is from Traverse City, where the wedding will be, and I offered to pay her cake maker/baker extra to make the desserts. However, the cake maker/baker said she would be unable to send down the vegan desserts to the Metro Detroit area. I will DEFINITELY order from The Red Hook again! Such an awesome feeling coffee shop. Cute little two top tables to sit and chat with a friend or people watch, whatever your into. They're coffee and tea selection is great and made to order. Also all they're homemade bakery treats are unique and so yummy. I had a homemade mini pizza called Gallate with a ton of veggies all over it, and a cardamom iced tea. I've been a Red Hook regular for a few months now and they do not disappoint. Their lavender latte is my favorite thing! Nitro cold brew, chai, and pour over are good too. I really appreciate that they have rotating housemade syrups... I've have orange, ginger molasses, and they all as a nice subtle flavor without being too sugary.
