We stopped into Ferndale's TOAST one weekday morning about 1030 am. Parking on the street was easy, though i think there's limited parking behind the eatery as well. The restaurant entrance dining area was nearly empty so we were invited to sit wherever we were comfortable. The place is beautifully decorated with toasters, art and flowers. Very clean too! I noticed the placement of noise-reducing, anechoic ceiling panels - very helpful when there's a full house of noisy patrons! The staff we interacted with were friendly, unobtrusive and knowledgeable about menu options. Another plus. I ordered a "hair of the dog" Breakfast Shot with accompanying OJ and bacon. It was delicious! My full order "Salmon Toast" loaded with lox, tomato, red onion, capers and cream cheese was HUGE, and tasted great! The toasted bread was warm and crusty too. Know that the other half of that sandwich came home with me for second meal. Price point is reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food and beverage options. This was my first time visiting Toast after hearing so many great things about the food. When we were seated, I noticed crumbs on the table and politely asked the waitress if she could wipe it down. She responded that she already had, but I pointed out that there were still crumbs there. She seemed irritated, so I even offered to wipe it myself if she gave me the towel. She then asked me to show her where the crumbs were and wiped them off. Unfortunately, her attitude throughout the interaction was very rude and unprofessional. My sister then asked to speak with a manager. When the manager came over, the other ladies in our group also mentioned the waitress's attitude. Instead of addressing our concerns professionally, the general manager became defensive and stated that the waitress did not have a nasty attitude. He then told us that if we wanted to leave, we could leave because he was not going to be bothered with us. I finally got to try Toast in Ferndale for brunch! The parking situation is a small lot behind the back and finding a spot on a weekend morning wasn't easy! We didn't have reservations so we did have to wait a while for a table. But, Toast made it manageable with an outdoor waiting area where you can order drinks from the bar. By the way, the outdoor area is not fully insulated, just sectioned off with clear tarp, so it can still feel a little chilly. However, it was nice having somewhere sit and mingle instead of just standing around by the door. Now to the good part: My table ordered the trashy hashy, toast egg sammy, and a muddled strawberry vanilla iced matcha. I started off with the iced matcha and ended with the egg sammy with a side of parmesan grits. The matcha was a little watery but good. The sandwich was super flavorful but very messy. I got the breakfast bruschetta as my meal with a side of bacon fried rice. The rice was flavorful, but not sure how I felt about eating that for breakfast. The balsamic glaze was too strong for my liking. Got the oatmeal raisin cookie hot chocolate, and asked for it half sweet. It was yummy, but even then, it was still sweet. The iced bee-stachio latte was good. Did think it was very expensive though - $9.50 for a latte!? Went around 11am on a weekday and got seated right away. It was pretty full for a weekday. An absolute must for me any time I am in Ferndale at breakfast time! The ambiance has a Greenwich Village vibe with unique and delicious food options. I've never had anything there that I didn't like, and the Dulce de Leche Grilled Cinnamon Roll is out of control! A few favorites for me are the Huevos Rancheros, Bacon Fried Rice, and the Parisian omelet (recommend you ask them to go light on the Chèvre tho ;)). Really cute restaurant that's been around for quite a while but I hadn't ventured out to this location for a long time. Today we walked in around noon and were seated immediately, although most of the restaurant was already full. Our server was very nice and explained the menu well. I felt the latte I got was quite expensive (9.50) but very very good. The classic eggs Benedict was also very good and plentiful. We also had the corned beef hash that was delicious. This was my second time at Toast. If you're in Birmingham this is a solid breakfast/brunch spot with a fun atmosphere. They get pretty crowded on weekends, but we were seated right away for our weekday brunch. The service was always great, and the waiters were very amicable. I really loved our waiters both times we were here. I got a strawberry cheesecake waffle today which was excellent. The cream cheese with the whipped cream, graham cracker dust, and fresh strawberries made for a very decadent breakfast meal that was surprisingly not as heavy as it looked, though I would not say it was light. I didn't use the syrup, but I could see how some people might want it for an extra dose of sugar. They also have homemade jam - last week was blueberry bourbon. Everyone ordered different things, and everyone had a great meal. First of all, I rarely post negative reviews. Unless something is terrible, I practice what my mom taught me and if I don't have anything positive to say, I don't say anything at all . But I took my daughter, two granddaughters (5 yrs old) and great grandson (2 yrs old) for brunch yesterday. Kids pancake meals x 3 with a side of sausage ($5 for 2 sausage links?), Fried green tomato Benedict, and the chicken breakfast enchilada (I specifically asked our waiter, whose "I'd rather be anywhere but here" attitude was VERY obvious, IF this dish was spicy because it had a pablano cream sauce and I cannot do spicy.) He assured me it wasn't spicy at all. It took longer than expected to get the food, but they were fairly busy, so not totally unexpected. But when I received mine, two bites into it and I had to call him back and let him know I couldn't eat it. It was very spicy. He apologized and I ordered the shrimp and grits instead, but there was no offer to substitute one for the other and I was still charged $19 for food I couldn't eat. Unfortunately the $20 shrimp and grits were a disappointment as well. To be fair, the shrimp (5) were seasoned and cooked well but the grits had absolutely no flavor. No salt, no other seasoning. As someone who works in the food service industry for the last 12 years and has been a savory/pastry chef for the last 7, I can only hope they get better in the future. When I received the bill and it was $115 because they ALSO automatically add a 20% gratuity for ANYONE dining in (and 10% for takeout!!!) that solidified that I will not go back or encourage anyone else to, either. If restaurants don't want to pay their workers a living wage, don't expect the customers to subsidize their salary. In most of my experience, places that do this almost always end up with employees who don't give a damn about giving decent service. I have all the respect for servers, I think it's one of the most frustrating and difficult jobs because you can work your ass off and not get anything from your customer. But as someone who 98% of the time over tips my servers, especially when the service is great, I did not appreciate having to give an $18 tip to someone who obviously would've preferred to be anywhere else than at work. Save your money and time and try somewhere else for brunch. This is not a place worth returning to. read more

The only reason I am giving two stars is for the portion sizes, but who wants to eat a plate loaded with food that tastes like absolutely nothing? The bacon fried rice, which was suggested by the waiter as well, tasted only of the oil they used and it had bacon. It should have some flavor! Everything was prepared great and looked wonderful, but everything was absolutely deceiving. Now the BILL... woah. They automatically added a 20% gratuity for DINING-IN! Not your parties amount, but just EATING. That's it! We had three extremely well behaved kids and two adults at a huge round table, the food tastes like a salt-shaker isn't even used once and I have to make a small down payment afterwards? The food was so good it's in a cool area and the parking is scarce but the ambiance and the food made up for what it took to get in. Went here for brunch with my family and had a nice experience. We were seated promptly and re-seated when we requested to be a little further from the door. Around the table we got chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy and I had the apples and cookies french toast. For drinks, I had the banana cold brew and my brother got the super mimosa. He said it was strong, but he's a one and done type of drinker. The cold brew was okay, but the banana flavor was too mild so I wouldn't get it again. The french toast was good, but pricey. I was torn between that and the pancakes, so I opted for a half order, thinking I'd have room leftover. The half order ($5 off the menu price) was ~$10 for *ONE* slice of bread cut in half. No one had any complaints about their food and the service was prompt, especially for them to have been so busy (on a Tuesday!) Everything came out nice and hot.
