This local restaurant is awesome!! Their burgers are local raised beef and are so tender. If you like blue cheese, they make it fresh and is out of this world. Their salads are also amazing! Our server, Brie was excellent and super knowledgeable and friendly. My husband had the coffee rubbed filet and it was delicious. Our college student daughter had the champagne chicken florentine and she ate every bite. And I had the low country salmon which had a good flavor except that it was overly salty. Food was absolutely delicious, as always!! Tonight we ordered the artichoke dip (we have never come here without getting it) which was delicious, as always!! Definitely the best artichoke dip I've had! I ordered the Champagne Chicken Florentine and substituted rice for the potatoes; absolutely DELICIOUS! The vegetable of the day was a medley of roasted Brussel sprouts with onions, (either sun dried or roasted) tomatoes and topped with a balsamic vinegar reduction and goat cheese. Oh my gosh. It was AMAZING!!! Some of the best Brussel sprouts we've ever had! My boyfriend got the Mediterranean Tilapia which was also remarkable!! The flavor combination was so great! Both meals were super light and wonderful! We finished the meal with the Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream Pie. We were both so very glad that we didn't skip dessert! Staying in the area and chose to eat here since they had online ordering and I was feeling ill and planned to eat in the hotel room. A friend who attended ASU confirmed it was a good choice. Unfortunately the restaurant didn't get the online order, so we had to wait for our food to be prepared. A+ on the wait staff who were apologetic and friendly, part of the meal was comped, and the waiter seemed genuinely surprised to be given a tip. Black bean and pesto lasagna and Cajun chicken pasta were both very good. High marks from me for several vegetarian options. High marks from my dining partner for compostable take out containers. I had the BBQ Bacon Pub burger, was delish. My wife got the wedge salad and it was huge. Couldn't finish all of it. Service was good. Not very busy for a Friday night but we did at 5. Food is good. Prices are a little high. Service is not always the best. Called on my birthday as we were driving toward the restaurant to see if there was a wait and if there were tables available for a party of 5. I literally was just 1 block from the restaurant and was told there is no wait. When we arrived we were told we needed reservations because there are no seats. I explained that I called and was told there is no wait and there were tables available. The server (a guy with long blonde hair in a ponytail and glasses) told me they got busy since I called. I find that unlikely since I was 1 block away when I called. Another server was embarrassed at his behavior and sat us. The pony tail guy was irritated that we got a seat and rushed us out. We used to go to the restaurant once a week. Since that incident we have not been back and have no intention of ever returning. read more

I loved it. Nice restaurant and good service, Bruce was great, as was the rest of the staff. We came here while waiting for the mechanic across the street to finish up our car. I got the All In Burger with the sautéed vegetables instead of fries (because I didn't want to eat too badly) and I immediately regretted not getting fries. When my food arrived, however, I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious the vegetables were. The burger was good too, although it was relatively average. There definitely wasn't anything bad about it, but also nothing memorable. We came in at 2:30 on a Friday so nobody was out for lunch and we were seated immediately. The service was friendly and very accommodating for requests. Our food came out quick and my drinks were never empty. Next time I'm in Boone I would come back in a heartbeat and bring my friends. read more

Red Onion Cafe is a great local place for a light lunch or a family supper. The service is customer focused and the food can be prepared to individual preferences. This place is mediocre at best. My wife and I ordered salads to start. The dressing tasted like it was from a bottle. Entrees came a couple minutes after the salad like we were expected to eat both at the same time versus having the entree served shortly after we finished the salad. My wife ordered the veggie burger and fries. The burger was good, but the fries tasted like they were store bought versus hand cut. I ordered the lasagna which tasted like it was made a month ago and put in the freezer. The noodles were hard. Summary: both the food and service were mediocre at best. Not recommended. read more

Meh! Took my daughter, her roommate, and my son there for lunch. We only needed a table for four. No one else was waiting for a table and we seen that some were free. However, we were asked to wait for a table. We waited long enough that another employee asked if we needed to be seated. We said we are waiting for a table. Shortly there after we were seated. We we're just handed the menu, no explanations to anything, specials weren't brought to our attention, nothing, and then she walked off, left no opportunity to inquire. I looked to my right and saw their sign that said please try our sister location Gaijin. Good grief! We just ate there and it was horrible. Please read that review. I wanted to leave but chose not too. We ordered the soup of the day- shrimp and corn. A meatball sub, a corn beef Ruben, and an order of onion rings. Nothing spectacular about this meal. The cup of soup was a whopping $5 and it was about a ladle full at best. It also tasted like it came out of a can which there is no doubt in my mind that it did. The reuban was okay, a little on the greasy side but not bad. The onion rings that are supposed to be their specialty: I'm lucky I don't need dental work after trying to eat them. They have a corn flour coating which is fried until it's over done and extremely crispy. They lacked in flavor. They do not come with a dipping sauce or anything. They were $7. Our bill was $40 for 3 of us for lunch. The food was fresh from the freezer or from a can. The service was dull and lacking. I realize that they hire starving college students, but at least hire someone with personality. I did leave a tip, however it should be earned and not expected. read more

Great food and a great menu! I wish I lived closer so I could try more of it! I recently went there with a buddy for dinner after a long day of hiking. I was very hopeful about this place, but was quite disappointed. The raved about onion rings are ok at best. French dip sandwich and spinach-artichoke quesedillas were... meh. My wife and I had the runs afterwards, probably from the french onion soup, which had grit in it... either poorly washed onions, or something was dropped on the floor and then placed in the soup without rinsing. First time in Boone and the first place we decided to dine. The staff was friendly and service was prompt. Choice to dine inside or outside under a covered dining area. The All the way Burger was tasty and the fries were hot. Also sampled was the Caesar chicken salad was good as well. The chicken spinach quesadilla was the favorite of the table. This restaurant has horrible customer service when it comes to takeout food. Placed an order and was told that my food would be ready in 15 minutes. I showed up to pick up my food, in a rush, and it was never even put into the system. The young host in a blue PFG is to blame for this. He was very unprofessional and slumped over the host desk as I walked in, and the young lady who was the hostess said the order was lost because of how busy it was. It was 8 o clock when I walked in and there were maybe 10 people in the restaurant. You have lost me as a customer, hire some kids who want to make your business better not hurt it. read more

Have been visiting for 6 days and went here for dinner twice. Great portions, yummy food and very friendly service. I never order anything straight off the menu & they were patient and accommodating. I highly recommend! The Cajun chicken pasta was great and not too spicy. The wraps are yummy- I ordered the portobello wrap and added chicken- delish! My dad has lived in Blowing Rock for 7 years and hadn't ever been until we brought him tonight. He and his wife will be back for sure. The chicken pesto pizza was great and a huge portion for one. The low country salmon was also great- yummy polenta! My boys inhaled their kids' pizza. We will definitely go back on our next trip! read more

We had the pimento cheese for an appetizer. Could have been a meal. We had the Orange glazed salmon and mushroom lasagna for the main courses. Salmon was perfectly cooked and the sides were excellent. The lasagna at first appeared to be a small portion. However about half way through it was evident the dish is extremely rich. I wanted to love this place, since I have family members that worked here 10+ years ago and love the place. Unfortunately they have not updated with the times. Their prices compared with food quality represents a VERY poor value. The pimento cheese appetizer came with very cheap tasteless bread, as did my 'french onion soup' which also featured stringy chunks of non caramelized onion. The burger was fine, however the service was TERRIBLE and ruined the whole experience. The restaurant was dead but our waitress was slow, forgetful and put in my order wrong and I had to wait while the rest of my party finished their meals. Then she didn't remove it from my check! She let us sit with empty glasses and dirty plates for awhile too. Ugh. Would not go back. read more

Ate here for the first time on Friday. It was amazing. I had the cheese quesadilla with chicken and spinach. I plan on going back today and it's only Saturday! My wife and I used a Restaurant dot com gift certificate the other day at Red Onion. Normally service is pretty good but this particular night they were understaffed and ran out of many menu items. My wife's tuna was very overcooked (she had asked for med. rare and received well done). They redid the tuna only after we complained twice and then the register receipt I received already had the tip figured in but had a blank place for the tip and so I tipped twice. On a recommendation we went to Red Onion Cafe for lunch and we were not disappointed. On a cold rainy day we were searchng for a nice warm meal. Our choices as follows. .. a good cheese burger and sweet potato fries..... a very good shrimp corn chowder soup and a fair reuben sandwich... a good blackened chicken breast platter... and an OK French Onion soup with a very good quiche. Overall we had a good meal and very pleasant service experience. The gluten free options are just...don't order bread or pasta but there is enough options on the nice menu to make it work. We needed a good restaurant for post-graduation dinner and The Red Onion had solid reviews so we gave it a shot. We were very pleased with our choice! All of the food was great, reasonably priced, and they do have a full bar which isn't entirely clear from their website. No draught beers, but lots and lots of bottle selections to choose from. We made a reservation for 7 almost a month in advance online and they had us all set up! The staff was great. As for the food, we had chicken pasta, the ribeye, a french dip, lobster bisque, a club sandwich, and a cheeseburger and everyone was happy with their meal. Ate here with my daughter and brother over Memorial Day weekend. The food was great! The drinks were great! Casey, our server was beyond fantastic, above and beyond. She recommended food, drinks (which she made expertly) and sat and answered our unending questions on the area (we were her only table at the time as we had come in at an odd time). I can not say enough good things about this cafe, we plan to make another trip down there from New York in the next few months and you can bet this place will be a must eat for us, it may end up being our only restaurant while there. I just hope Casey will be our server again as she was truly outstanding. I hope the owners of the Red Onion are aware of what an asset she is to their establishment : ) read more
