This is one of my most visited restaurants in Boone, whether I am with friends, family, visitors, or just alone! The location is perfect for anybody in the area. The service is professional yet comforting; I have never had staff that didn't know the menu like the back of their hand. On top of all that, the food is amazing. I lean towards their pizzas which are always delicious. The fish tacos are also popular for good reason. My dad gets the French dip, something he is very particular about. It was pretty good. Atmosphere was lacking a bit-looks a little antiquated but it's clean. Sometimes you might have to ask to put on music. Maybe it's because it's a cafe? Baked linguine was hot and delicious. The meatballs were good and I think they're worth the extra cost. My boyfriend and I had a BOGO entree coupon. We both agreed that the baked linguine is good but overpriced for it to be pasta and cheese and sauce, where you have to pay extra for meatballs. The pizza was good, but my boyfriend said he wished he ordered something else. He just didn't feel like it was worth the price-something we often see in Boone. I like the food at Red Onion better than Proper, but pasta with cheese and sauce shouldn't be as expensive as it is. Mind you, we ARE college students! Service was great. Always has been. Notably so. If you like simple, tasty food that everyone in the family can agree on, with a great convenient location right across campus, and atmosphere isn't important to you-this right here is your place. If you're looking for a more romantic date with similar prices and want comfort food with a twist-go to Proper. Also the blonde brownie is worth it. I have always given my business to red onion since I started as a student at app state. I will never make that mistake again. My father who is disable and has an issue with keeping warm due to his thin blood came here on a day trip with my mom today while i was at work today. While there my father ventured out on the patio area, on a bench, not a table to eat. A waiter came out on the patio and told my sick disable father who had traveled 1 hour and a half just to eat at this restraunt that he would have to move because people were trying to eat! My father let him know he was waiting on a table in the warm to which the waiter responded you can't sit out here sir! My dad is a good natured man and a better person than me so he agreed to move. After saying to the waiter I'm gonna go sir outside at the front until the tables ready the waiter replied yes, that's the best place for you sir . My father dosnt dress well he's a sick dying man who don't have that much longer to live he looks a little rough sometimes as we all do but no one deserves to be treated that way esp a long time customer. We contacted the manger who said my father and i w Quote misunderstood what the waiter was saying and they didn't want my father to get trapped in the outside patio area anyone who has been here knows there are a ton of exits it's not a cage then when my mother pointed out there were exits she said she heard the conversation when she wasn't anywhere around the manager said this instead of apologizing and trying to fix this she blamed the customer I have been going here every year on my birthday since I started app and about ever day for 4 years before I graduated but I will never ever step foot in the red onion again I would never buy food from someone who would treat anyone like this and if you keep treating your customers this way soon your gonna be out of business severely disappointed read more

I loved this restaurant in college. This was where I wanted to go every chance I got. The lasagna was always hot and don't even get me started on the French Onion soup. I was in love with it. Still am in my memories. Went back yesterday for the first time in 18 years and was so let down I am still upset. The French onion soup was cold then on the redirection the onions weren't even cooked all the way and the broth tasted like water. The food is average at best. The food was so boring that everyone on our party got the hamburger, there were 7 in our party. We arrived around 2 and had to wait 45 minutes when we were told there was a 20 minute wait. The best part of our experience was our waitress she was attentive and on top of our beverages. read more

Been eating at the Red Onion for 21 years now. Live out of town and go to App State football games. The menu is always updated to match todays trends. In all these years have never had a bad meal and always something new to try. Just had the Cajun salmon with grids. OMG to die for. Everything made from scratch and I believe that is what makes the difference and makes the food outstanding. The servers are always friendly and smiling. Love the covered open-air patio. Given some reviews, I was expecting trouble getting a table prime time on a Friday night (especially with the Highland Games going on). Called ahead, had a table ready when we got there, and had a great experience. Service was friendly and efficient. After a pimento cheese appetizer, my wife had the champagne chicken and I tried the bourbon glazed ribeye. Both dishes (and the app) were excellent. Chicken was flavorful, juicy, and tender, as was the steak. Only thing even close to negative was the baked potato was a tad underdone. Extremely disappointing and overpriced. My boyfriend and I, who are not very picky, ate lunch there and left without having barely touched anything. His French Onion Soup tasted like super bland fart-water (which required half a shaker of salt to make it tolerable) and the dip was not 'dip' at all but like a tossing together of artichokes out of a can. Just ate there tonight. When we walked in, never having been before the host looked annoyed that we didn't have a reservation. We were sat in the corner like a step child. Our waitress came over, never introduced herself and demanded our drink order. She seemed annoyed that we didn't know what we wanted to order right away. We never got our bread that I saw the other tables around us receive. We were in there for over an hour mostly waiting for our food. She came by once to see if we were ok. I had to ask for more water. We asked for a box and waited 15 minutes and still never saw the waitress or the box before deciding to get up and leave without it. This place is a great find! We were placed at a table within seconds and they also have the choice of indoor or outside seating. My brother and I split our meals so we could have the best of both worlds. He got the grilled cheese combo which consisted of the sandwich and Caesar salad. While I got a chicken breast sandwich soaked in teriyaki sauce and a side of fries. My brother finished his salad like he was a starving man. He said it was excellent and that he liked that the croutons were seasoned. The grilled cheese was bigger than expected but was really good! Crunchy crusts and nice and soft in the middle. The chicken sandwich was also really good too! It came with a brioche bun which was nice and soft. The chicken was flavored and cooked very well. The fries were also fantastic! I actually finished off all the fries on my plate which never happens with me! They wears my anything special about them. Really good. My family and I visited for a vacation. We couldn't decide where to eat so I was looking at all the reviews and thought it looked like a nice place. We had 6 adults and 4 kids. I was in town visiting and saw and ad for this place at the blowing rock tourist site. We took our two kids with us. First off, when we were placing the drink order, the seven year old shouted out, "I want the cheese pizza!" I didn't think anything of it, but the server brought out JUST the childs food a few minutes later! The appetizer hadn't even gotten to the table and only ONE person in our party was already eating. Second, I ordered the burbon glazed ribeye, the second most expensive dish on the menu, and it was cold. The glaze and the meat. Another person in my group ordered the fish tacos and they came out smelling like they were left out in the sun for a month, why would you bring that stinky rotten food to the table? We had to re-order for sending the rotten fish back and by the time that meal came out, we had already finished our meal and were ready to leave. They acted like they did us a favor by not charging us for the rotten fish tacos that we sent back. How nice of you. Still ended up spending WAY too much for this poor food and service. Great local place! We went in with a party of 12 for lunch and they quickly accommodated us. They have great lunch combos that are reasonably priced. The French onion soup is great! Cute location, pretty outdoor dining area. Chose this on Yelp reviews and was sorely disappointed. Took almost 10 minutes to get our drink order after we were seated. Other tables got complimentary bread, but we were never offered any. The nachos were terrible; chips were burned, and sliced cheese was put in the middle where it melted in a huge glob. No salsa, no sour cream, just burnt chips, cheese, and lettuce. I had the Chinese chicken salad, which was actually really tasty. Not overly sweet, well cooked chicken. Kid had salmon, which was overcooked, on a soggy polenta cake and runny, tasteless sauce. Hubs had the baked linguini, which was dry pasta with tons of cheese and minimal sauce. Over rated . The food was meh at best. Just wasn't feeling it. My chicken caesar was not good. It basically had what appeared to be re-heated chicken nuggets on it. My wife's steak was supposed to be a spicy jerk but it tasted more like instant coffee (which could have been part of the rub but it wasn't mentioned on the menu). I was not impressed. The salads and sandwiches all were excellent however the fish entrees were a bit pricey for what they are. It was fine. Went for dinner with a group of 5 total and none of us were that impressed. Three of us got the fillet, one got the ribeye, and the other got the chicken florentine. The steaks all came out cooked to the same temperature despite us ordering them at different temperatures. They weren't really seasoned other than the Gorgonzola topping. The potatoes were cooked really well. This is one of the only restaurants I've been to where they cooked the potato the whole way through.
