Normally this place is awesome- We eat here every time we visit Boone This time around not as good as usual. Although the people at the desk were really nice the pizza was Not done with care- it was All dough- everything was pushed to the middle very little sauce- didn't taste like a deep dish pizza. They asked "what you want " when we entered and then we said trying to sit in and eat and they said that do you know the food you want or you need menus. The pizza place is awesome, we felt bad they are so short handed. We got a Margherita pizza, the cheese (no need to ask for extra) this pizza is loaded with cheese. The sauce was sweet and tasty, it also has tomato's and basil which added a nice bite to it. The salad we got could have feed 4 people. It was fresh not made yesterday or earlier in the day. First time here , wanted to try the place, walked in stood for a bit no one approached so assumed it was seat yourself , sat at a table for bit no one approached back to the front desk was told to order there. The person at the desk took my order said the beer I ordered was on the second shelf and gestured at the bar. So I grabbed my beer from the second shelf and sat down. The owner came to our table asked if I took the beers , I told him yes I was told they were on the second shelf . He called me a liar continued to curse at us. I tried to explain but he would not listen. He followed me out the door continued to curse and call us liars. I had left my hat and phone at the table he threw at my chest and said here is your stuff. Could have been handled as the misunderstanding it was. I really like the order system and freedom to refill personal drinks. Nothing much to say about service other than food coming out quick and how the staff was very welcoming. The pizzas are so terribly greasy. The garlic knots are dry. The knots were basically sitting in fake butter, but they were not baked properly and had zero moisture. For a family of four we paid over $70 and left most of our food there. My kids had stomach aches after and to be honest I don't feel that great either. First off there is no waitress service. Pizza is ordered as you come in the door. The place lacks any semblance of ambiance. Half the place Is cluttered with boxes and unused furniture and salad bar equipment. Had to pay for the pizza before we got it so we put a full tip on the bill. I graduated from App State in 2016 and had only heard amazing things about Capone's, but never got around to going. This past weekend while visiting Boone, my partner and I decided to go there for dinner, and I was super excited. The had a great selection of local beers on draft so I tried to order one. The waitress told me she's not familiar with out of state licenses (South Carolina) and wanted to show it to her manager, which I get because she just doing her job. The manager comes over and tells me that my license is fake, even though I'm 24 years old, and he then told me to "get a better fake." While my SC license normal gets a double take in Boone, I've never been accused of my license being fake, especially in such a condescending manner. Now, as a former restaurant manager, I understand you have to do your job, but there was no need to be make patrons feel uncomfortable. We stayed and ordered our food, which was good for the price. Our waitress was kind and helpful throughout the rest of our time there. While the food was okay, I don't think I would ever come back here based on the behavior of the manager on duty. So, if you have a baby face and an out of state license, I wouldn't try to order beer here, or you might be met with a condescending lecture about your "fake id." read more

I have been getting pizza from Capones for many years. I was always a fan of their hand tossed crust; it has a nice mix of crunch and chewiness. I have recently tried both the deep dish and thin crust options. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the deep dish. I was anticipating a more traditional Chicago deep dish, but what I experienced was essentially a hand tossed pizza with an extra tall, chewy crust. By no means was it bad, just not what I was expecting. The thin crust goes head to head for me with the hand tossed. It is not a thin, crispy cracker crust, but it provides a nice balance between crust and toppings. I have always loved a ricotta based, white pizza, and the 12 years on King Street doesn't disappoint. Ricotta, garlic, and just the right amount of basil! This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to one of our favorite pizza spots, Capone's Pizza in Boone. Formerly located in a small hole-in-the-wall store front in historic downtown Boone, recently they moved into a larger space in New Market Centre. Dora here. Capone's moved from a prime location on King Street, but that prime spot costs them in terms of customers due to lack of parking. Also, maybe, they squeezed twenty booths in that cramped space. In their new New (lol) Market Centre location, diners have room to spread out in here. Much nicer than their cramped King Street location. And parking galore! When we visit Capone's, we have two favorites, the Chicago Style Deep Dish and the Don Vito stuffed pizza. This time we went with the Chicago deep dish, meat supreme on my half and just pepperoni on Dora's. This pizza is outstanding, with a thick chewy crust (which I usually do not eat because I'd rather eat an extra slice), topped with pepperoni, hamburger, crumbled bacon, diced ham and sausage. The meat items are fresh and the pie has just the right amount of sauce. Dora here. Just a heads up. This isn't authentic Chicago style, but it works for us. Light on the marinara, not overly cheesy, and a ginormous thick and doughy crust. YUM! Every time we come, we say we're going to order something different because Capone's has a robust menu loaded with non-pizza options, but it never happens. We alternate between the Don Vito Stuffed Pizza and this Chicago style deep dish. One day we'll try their Stromboli or the Meatball Sub or...um, probably not. Went a while without eating at Capone's because I had just been disappointed. We decided to give it another go during the pandemic when things were closed and the pizzas were on point! I like the vibe and atmosphere of this place with all the cool gangster decor and feel of the restaurant. The service was excellent as we were taken care of from the moment we walked in and were given everything we needed while eating. The deep dish pizza was worth the wait and really hit the spot and was some the best deep dish pizza that I have had. This restaurant was very clean and well run. I left the place with a smile on my face and a good feeling. I am glad I was able to come here and enjoy the experience and now I know a really good pizza place that will be here when I return. read more
