The refill shop is a business that I am so loyal to I make the trip from San Diego up to refill my oils (discount s given if you bring the empties back). The owner is passionate and genuinely cares about providing the highest quality in oils and everything else available to purchase in the store. I've only ever received outstanding customer service every time I've visited the shop. There is a wide variety of natural and locally made products for your hair body face etc. along with other charming and unique items like sweater stone (highly recommend) I can't say enough about how much I appreciate this small business. I live in the same neighborhood as this store and finally tried to check it out! I'm severely allergic to dogs/cats and one of the shopkeepers had her dog running around so I didn't stay for long. It wasn't the greatest first impression because I think it's pretty unprofessional to have any animal running around crazy in a business establishment. I found this shop after someone brought a linen spray from here to a gift exchange the week of Christmas. They sell an assortment of detergent, lotion, shampoo, dish-washing liquid, etc in bulk amounts by weight. You can bring in your own container or use one of theirs, then add an essential oil or fragrance. The spray someone gifted had the 1000 flowers fragrance and was LOVELY. Really cool concept! Stopped in downtown Ventura during a road trip in LA and happened to walk into this shop because the sign outside mentioned body care products! Once I was inside I was so surprised to find that this store lets you pick from a variety of base body/house hold products - some of which are vegan friendly (soap, hair serum, astringent, body oil, laundry detergent, etc.) and then allows you to create scents for the product using essential oils and fragrances! I bought the hair serum, rosewater toner (unscented) and an acne spot treatment (pre-packaged). The coolest part is you get to pick from a variety of fun bottles in all shapes and sizes ranging from plastic to glass and in between. WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! Let me start off by saying that I work in the cosmetics industry at a store similar to The Refill Shoppe, and I will continue to come back to this store every chance I have. From the moment I entered The Refill Shoppe, my friend and I were greeted with warmth and kindness by the beautiful store owner, Michelle. We simply picked up a J.R. Liggett's Shampoo Bar, and Michelle instantly joined our discussion on Sustainable Palm Oil. She was genuinely curious if the Palm Oil in the shampoo bar was sustainable, and she quickly went online to do research and get back to us with an answer within minutes (the website does not clarify if their Palm Oil is sustainable). WOW! No better customer care or service out there. Next, we meandered our way through the beautifully laid out refillable plastic and glass bottles as well as various other bathroom accessories, i.e. real pumice stones, soap sacks to exfoliate the skin, and even straight up beeswax to make your own cosmetics with at home. After meandering for awhile, I came across their Essential Oil Chart and looked up all of the essential oils that are suggested for the treatment of Acne. Though many cosmetics stores have tons of products that have various essential oils that are great for the natural treatment of Acne, The Refill Shoppe allows you to choose exactly the essential oils you would like in your product in order to get the desired effects you are looking for, whether it be for your hair, your skin, or your mind. The equally beautiful Alex was there to assist me, offered me the chance to read a beautiful book of essential oils that they keep at the shop, and discussed various essential oils that would be great in the Shower Gel I chose (with Michelle's assistance) in order to help decrease my inflamed skin and acne on my chest and back. She was extremely compassionate and caring about my situation (vital when discussing sensitive topics like acne), talking about the benefits of essential oils such as Carrot Seed, Tea Tree, and Lavender. I ended up putting all three of these oils in my Shower Gel, and I can't wait to see the results after using my Shower Gel for the next month or so. SO! You're in Ventura. Should you go to The Refill Shoppe? YES! YES! YEEEEESSSS!!!!!!!!!!! The good: I love the concept: Zero waste custom scented bulk refills for hard to find liquid bulk products. Think shampoo, Castille soap, beard oil, astringent ect. The products are actually quite nice, albeit expensive. I can tell the owner cares. The little things like being able to email receipts show the owner is comitted to zero waste and i appreciate that. The staff she hires however, are another story. I've never been in without a cashier getting in my face about me not being "level 5 vegan" enough (yes, it's a Simpson reference). The most recent time, I was refilling a plastic soap refill dispenser. The cashier refused to help me, telling me that they don't refill in plastic (not true) and had an attitude telling me that I needed to buy new glass jars, and how dare I not. It was so rude, and judgemental...and the oposite of zero waste. Considering the dial soap container originally cost around $5 with soap, and I'm paying an absurd premium for a refill (at over $30, but it is nice stuff), I think a little customer service...or at least not outright rudeness isn't a bit much to ask. The time before that, a similar experience. Cashier started helping me, decided I wasn't "level 5 vegan" enough or something and simply just walked away to help another customer midtransaction with no explanation. I'm zero waste. I'm local. This store should be my go to, and I'm never coming back because of the attitude and would recommend you dear reader similarly avoid. read more

Love this little shop which we understand just moved closer down to the main part of the shopping area on Main. We found amazing little gifts to use for our daughters' birthday/Christmas and some really swell natural products that we never expected to find. I was thrilled to see the refill concept in action, so that the empty bottle is now refilled and we are not imagining huge waste piles or landfills full of stuff like that. Glass nail files, loofahs, old fashioned non-laureth sulfate natural shampoos, and wrapping products to allow the gift to be given in fabric.. Why don't they have one of these in the Bay Area?? I found this place on acciden twhen I was downtown with my brother and cousin but I am so glad that I did. Basically, they have every bath or home product you can think of here. You purchase a bottle or you can bring your own and then you can fill it with shampoo, conditioner, lotion etc. they even have dog shampoo. After you pick a bottle and a solution, you can create your own scent. I bought body wash and body lotion and scented them with lavender oil. I love the smell and I will have to some back once I run out. The lotion is not as thick as I would like but it does the job. The most important part is that the lotions are paraben free and vegetarian, which is something I care about. They also have a baby section, pet section, household cleaners, deoderant, you name it. The girl who helped me with my purchase was very knowledgeable and mixed my lotions. She kept checking with me to see how strong or subtle I wanted the scent to be. Their products are fairly priced which is great because you are re-using your bottles and using products that are not harmful to your body. I wish I could order online. For now, I will just have to come visit my family more often. read more

I had been eyeing this place for about a year and wishing so badly that there was one nearby to where I lived. Lucky for me, my husband and I decided to make a day trip to Ventura and this was obviously one spot I had to go to. We were not disappointed. First, let me start by covering the surroundings. My husband had surprised me with this day trip so I did not have a bunch of empty jars with me. But there are literally a few thrift stores on the same block as this store. Just make your way to one of them, load up on how many jars you would think you would need, then head into this store. That's what we did. And I'm so glad we did. There were so many things I wanted! Since this store is a place I've always wanted to visit, I knew there were quite a few things I wanted to try. Good thing we limited ourselves to the number of bottles we brought in cause I can easily let myself go by getting a few ounces of each bulk item. When you enter the store, the first few things are items that you can buy to help reduce your waste (i.e. Stasher bags, Klean Kanteen, wool balls, shampoo bars, etc.). I ended up picking up an Ecobag soap holder thing that acts like a loofah. I had been wanting something that would help scrub my body but I didn't want to buy a loofah, and I had been looking for a great alternative for about a year now. So glad I ran into this solution cause I've used it a couple times already and I love it. Anyways, lets move on. At the back of the store is where you'll see the bulk items in glass containers. Where do I start??? It's everything I've wanted in a package-free shop. From borax to liquid shampoo to shaving cream to dog shampoo to baby items...I will metaphorically run out of breath as I try to list them all on here. Do you know how badly I've wanted things like this? And to make this store even MORE amazing, a few of their items that are unscented, you can add up to 6 essential oils to scent them to your liking! (!!!!!) Husband got a small mason jar of shaving cream which he scented with some help from the kind ladies behind the counter. He's used the shaving cream already and has loved it and claims it will last him awhile, especially compared to the ones we used to buy from conventional stores and online. I got some castille soap because it's a great base to many other house cleaning items I make at home. Everyone was so nice. I especially liked that they write the tare weight on a cute little chalkboard tag that they hang around your bottle. Okay, I need to stop writing because I am fan-girling and geeking out about this store. We drove from Orange County to visit the Refill Shoppe and we have already started talking about the next time we want to visit. Forewarning: Be prepared to be overwhelmed; even though they are a small store, they carry quite the selection. Pretty cool shop, or should I say shoppe, that lets you refill household and beauty products with essential oils. Essentially it's DIY because you can blend your own scents with the product of your choosing, be it hair serum or cleaning agents. My fave is the hair serum with happy blend; I find that the pure essentials oils are not only too pungent but also require far too much commitment. I love this place! Best place to get bath salts and have them scented the way you want. I love this place. I don't know why someone didn't think of this sooner. You can walk in, grab some mason jars, and go to the bath salts and scoop in as much as you want. They charge based on weight. You can get Himalayan (pink) bath salts, Dead Sea salts and the Epson bath salts. Pay for them, take them home, and enjoy. When you run out, bring the jars back and refill, and pay for the content inside. They also do hand soaps, so you can get the hand soap of your dreams (scents) for your guest bathrooms. Also they do lotions and shampoo and conditioner, and all kinds of every day things that you clean with, the difference is,... they're unscented and you chose the scents! The town has always seemed more like my home, rather than my actual hometown. However; I was getting bored of my same old shopping/eating/entertainment routine. That is when I came across this ingenious love affair while browsing Ventura's website. The Refill Shoppe? Adorable 70s eco-chic green deco? Vegan & Organic? Right up my alley. Added to my itinerary. Upon arrival, I believe there was an hour until closing. {The hours are extremely fitting and flexible - BTW} Immediately, I got the warmest greeting from the owner herself and her gorgeous dog Sophie. She explained the whole concept. I was so overwhelmed, and well, let's just put it this way; that may have been my first, but it sure wasn't my only trip. I ended up walking out with 'spray lotion' (w/added patchouli) and 'hand sanitizer' (w/added tea tree oil). I could not stop using them the first night! When I left, I made sure to complement on the music as that totally set the mood for me. I mean, Hendrix and "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash are undeniable. Overall, I think I spent more time talking than shopping. Her story is so inspiring and identical to most. I've been buying things here for about two years now and love it. I primarily get refills of my body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and laundry detergent. All of these items have cleaned just as well as name brands from stores. In addition, once you purchase the bottle, the price comes out to very similar prices as you would get from grocery stores. I also can't describe how much fun it is to experiment with all the different fragrances every time you refill. In the end, it feels great to know that you're not contributing to environmental waste anymore. Finally, the general environment of the store is always great. The workers are always happy to see more people and just seem to generally love life. We decided to visit The Refill Shoppe while we were dog sitting for friends. We live in Redondo Beach, so this shop isn't one we can frequent regularly but I wish we could. Love this place! I have lived in Ventura my entire life, and I am sad to say that I just discovered this delightful shop. They have so many wonderful, clean, organic products! I was looking for a face mask the first time I went in. The saleswoman was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all of the products. I have extremely sensitive skin so she recommended the mud mask, and oh my goodness is it amazing! I also purchased the body scrub which works wonders on dry, winter skin. I came here as I read the reviews and as I live in Ventura thought this would be a good go to place for my oils. Firstly I recommend bringing your own bottles, the ones they sell are super expensive. In fact all their equipment is on the pricey side. I bought four 0.25ml bottles with oil. The oils ranged from $3 to $8 - they were not even rare or hard to find oils - just Lemon, Rosemary, Lavender and Eucalyptus. It was a pretty big shock when the bill came to over $40!!! (Bearing in mind that I could get a set of 3 doterra 10ml oils for $30). I also found the Lemon very weak as well as the Lavender. I diffuse lemon in water in the bathroom. My usual lemon oil would still smell the next few days when not being diffused but the lemon from here lasted a few hours and I could smell nothing in the unlit diffuser after at all. The staff were very friendly though and seemed to be knowledgable. I don't think I will be returning as it is just too expensive and I am not really impressed with the quality of the oils. You should be able to ingest 100% EO's and the the girl who served me said that none of the oils are digestible. read more
