For an American-Chinese chain, this is my go-to and hits the spot every time. I've never dined in, but I DoorDash. I have tried so many dishes - general tso chicken or tofu, chow fun noodles with beef or tofu, chongqing, baby back ribs , salt and pepper tofu, pan fried pork dumplings, garlic eggplant, fried rice, and chicken egg rolls. What rises to the top for me is the general tso tofu, chow fun which tastes similar to pad see ew, pork dumplings, fried rice and chicken egg rolls. The garlic eggplant was a little too saucy and didn't quite taste like garlic but more like the sweet and sour sauce for chicken. It was ok, but I think it would be better with the same brown sauce as either the general tso or chow fun. I like that you can switch out many of the meat options for veggies and other protein. I like spicy and have had medium spicy once on the chow fun noodles. It was good for me. I usually order mild and add red chili flakes to my liking. They serve large portions good for a few people or make small meals to take to work. Prices for some dishes are higher than others in comparison to places like Cooking Girl. Since I DoorDash and live near two of their locations, the food is always delivered hot and packaged well in takeout plastic containers for the main entree. This place is so cool!! It's so high tech and I feel like I just walked into a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan. The food is really good and just even the chicken fried rice itself is very good. I will say that The portions are very large so they are definitely splittable. The first time we went, we got our own entrées and then the next time we went, we just split one and that was more than enough for both me and my boyfriend. Service was really fast. I have been looking for a place to get quality Chinese food since my favorite spot closed. I was wanting take out and had heard about the Rice Box before so I decided to give it a try. I loved the colorful decor outside and thought a bit standard on the inside. Decent amount of seating if coming in when it's not busy. I usually start with a basic entree to test how good a new Chinese food spot may be, as not all are created equal. The basic entree I went with was Fried Rice. The Rice Box delivered big time on this one! Ordering online for pickup, I added Chicken and Shrimp to my fried rice, and really appreciated having the option to add broccoli to it as well. With fried rice orders you also have a choice of egg rolls. I chose Chicken, again. For a price of about $16 I got plenty of food to take back home. The rice was cooked perfectly, with the chicken and shrimp being tender, flavorful, and delicious. The egg rolls on the other hand was average - I've had better. Nonetheless, the test was passed with flying colors, so it is safe to say I will be returning to try other entrees. Receiving my order for pick up was pretty quick which was a plus. Rice Box is kind of a fancier, more aesthetic Panda Express. The selling point is that they give decent sized portions, about 1-3 meals, depending on your appetite. I ordered the Mongolian Chicken, and it was a saucy, stir fried chicken with snow peas, carrots, and onions. It tasted like those individual ingredients were thrown together in a wok, which is to say tasted fine, but not mind blowing. Their two spice level is medium and extra spicy, which makes no sense lol. I got extra spicy and it was barely spicy nor were the peppers very spicy. The rice was also overly dry and crumbly, which made it really difficult to eat with chopsticks. The meal also comes with an egg roll with chicken or vegetable as options. In total it was about $15 for the meal. Pretty good value, especially if you can make it stretch over 2 meals. I also tried the chow fun, which I really enjoyed the flavor of. Will definitely be getting that next time. I really do see this place's main competitor as Panda Express. I would argue that PE will get you your food faster, albeit slightly less fresh, but with roughly equivalent value and flavor. I'm sure I'll eat here again because my friends enjoyed their food, so I'll update my review when I get something better next time. I will say that I found it hard to focus on the menu on the wall because there were so many moving parts on it, but that might just be a me problem. I much preferred looking at the menu on my phone. There was a pretty long wait even though there weren't a lot of people eating there, but I think they get a lot of takeout orders so maybe that's why. TL; DR Good ambience, okay-ish food, okay service I like how the place looks- very futuristic looking with all the neon and open structure. Especially love the digital menu board. The food has great portions but tastes mediocre, in my opinion. Ordered the following: 1. Sesame chicken 3/5 - no real flavor in the sauce but the chicken was alright. Extra spicy had a nice amount of heat but I didn't feel it was extra spicy for me. Came with a chicken egg roll on the side which was good & hot. 2. House fried rice with chicken 4/5 good wok hei on the rice and very good chicken to rice ratio. Also came with a chicken egg roll. 3. Scallion pancake 3.5/5 tastes as you'd expect a scallion pancake to taste. However there was an odor on the oil used that refused to leave my hands after eating. Service: it seems they have attempted a mix of fast food & table service (like chick fil-a in some locations). We were sitting on the patio outside and wanted the heaters turned on. I waited several minutes for someone to come turn them on (since there was an explicit sign on them to not touch) but the restaurant was very busy. After waiting a while I figured I'd try turning it on myself when one of the staff members came over and tried turning it on. However both their patio heaters had no fuel in the tank and we ended up sitting outside without heat since our food had already arrived. The rice box brick n mortar greatly exceeded our expectations. This space ship looking Chinese spot had quick service and HUGE portions. We ordered their general tso's chicken, sesame chicken, garlic eggplant, and beef chow fun noodles. We didn't realize each order also comes with a giant side of white rice, brown rice, fried rice, le mein noodles, or broccoli, plus an egg roll. When I tell you the portions are big, I mean we had enough food for lunch, dinner, and the next 3 meals honestly. All the food tasted fresh and was made to order. The general tso's chicken was honestly some of the best I've had in awhile. It beats your "local Chinese takeout" spot for sure. The real favorite though was their garlic eggplant. This is such an underrated dish. Even if you don't like eggplant, order this and I think it will change your mind. The chewy texture of their beef chow fun noodles is a must as well. Love the rice box. It's one of the few places I can get super good tofu that is nice and firm!!! Every one of their sauces pairs Greta with it! I especially like the sesame tofu or the orange tofu! The house fried rice is great but I'd recommend the yang chow fried rice as it has delicious sweet Chinese sausage in it! The chow fun had a good amount of spice and was full of flavor. They are generous with the amount of shrimp, but they use the mini ones. I had a bite of my boyfriend's Mongolian chicken and it was pretty good. Some rooms for improvement: The rice was a bit dry, bathrooms were dirty, and my fortune cookie had no fortune.
