4 Stars for a non Chain Hotel. Tired of Hilton's, Marriott's, and the like? Stay here! I found the pricing to be considerably better than anything else, and the size- for a DC hotel room? ENORMOUS! The bed was super comfy, air conditioning worked great (not my typical experience in DC) and the staff was something to write home about. Conveniently located close to 2 quick marts and a Trader Joes, you can easily pick up items to stock your kitchenette in no time. While not on a main drag (HEAVENLY for sleeping purposes), cabs hang out in front, I had no problems catching a ride whenever I needed. It is also in extremely close proximity to the Kennedy center, so you could easily walk. My only issue? Well, it is because of me! I tripped every single time I walked into my room, missing the step up. I also stubbed my toe on the ledge into the bathroom- about 15 times during my 4 day stay. I less than gracefully launched myself into the kitchenette every morning on my way to start the coffee pot. Just watch where you are walking- or remember that there are ledges. If you have any grace in movement you will be fine. Otherwise, if you are like me, well, you will wake up quicker! read more

Worst hotel ever and I didn't even stay there! So for business travel I generally choose a location close to the office I'm visiting. On this particular trip I really needed a refrigerator in my room so I chose the River Inn even though it's about 2 miles from the office. Here's what happened: 1. Booked my room several weeks in advance and got confirmation note 2. Day of check in I got an email from Kiley at the River asking me to confirm what time I'd be checking in and stating how excited they were to have me. I write back and confirm I'll be landing at 11pm 3. Land at Dulles at 11pm and then take the 40 min cab ride to the hotel 4. Their manager comes running out to meet my cab, calls me by the wrong name, then tells me I can't stay there I seriously thought it might be one of those what would you do shows 5. They ship me out to Comfort Inn in Fairfax- 30 min back in the direction I just came from So now I'm clearly not getting to bed until 1am, have meetings that start at 7am, but somehow need to find my way back to city on time with all of my luggage to again attempt to stay at the River tomorrow. So more horrible adventures with these cretins tomorrow! read more

OK, very nice hotel, close to Georgetown, in FOGGY BOTTOM/WEST END (that would be one of the more expensivo areas), on a quiet, tree-lined street, close enough to the action but not too close to GWU keggers. ALL for $100 a night, ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND. And they weren't miffed that all 5 of us squeezed into one room, which was comfortable and the bathroom stocked with AVEDA products. I got the fold-out, but passed out quite comfortably anyway. There was even a little kitchen which rivals many NYC kitchens in size. I would definitely stay here again, you know, if there's ever an occasion where I visit DC and forget to tell my parents I'm around..... We just spent 2 nights and 3 wonderful days staying at this hotel while in DC and before that, we spent a couple nights at the Hampton Inn by the convention center. Although we paid about the same for both hotels, there was absolutely no comparison, the River Inn is definitely in a class by itself. Liked: Spacious room and a good sized kitchenette with utensils, cookware, flatware Huge wall-spanning window Extremely comfortable bed and furnishings Separate powder area from the bathroom Great residential area Location allowing you to walk to groceries, restaurants, White House, and metro (we walked to Trader Joe's about 2 blocks) They even allowed us a late checkout at the last minute as well as allowed us to use their black car service instead of a taxi to the airport. The one concern I had was the lack of ventilation in the kitchen from cooking, but I could forgive that easily as it had a good sized separate kitchenette--not many hotels offer this. I want to reiterate that I loved this hotel because it didn't feel like a hotel, we were so comfortable within the room and the neighborhood that we truly felt at home. All in all, the room was clean and comfortable. We really just slept there anyway. It was close to the metro which was great. However, we certainly didn't appreciate the maid knocking on our door at 8:15 a.m. to clean our room! Also, I don't think it was necessary for them to charge $40 per night on top of the room rate for parking. I am not sure if the restaurant is part of the hotel or if it is leased to someone else, but our experience wasn't really the best. The bald headed guy who "seated" us by saying "third table on the left" and then coming over and saying "menu, menu, wine list" as he practically threw them on our table and walked away was quite rude. He then stood at the table in front of us and conversed with the couple there the entire time we were dining. We've stayed at The River Inn several times. It is just perfect for our needs. We usually get a suite with a kitchenette. Well worth it. The place is clean, tidy and quiet. The beds are to die for. We love extra firm mattresses, if you are not of this school, you may not rave as we do. Our only complaints are frugal choice regarding free cable, and weak to completely constipated wifi. Good hotel and friendly staff. The room was clean and the interior is modern. Public transportation within 5 minutes walk and 20 minutes by foot to Lincoln Memorial. Also there is a Trader Joe's around the corner and a playground. The hotel is located in a residential area in a nice neighborhood. The River Inn was selection based on a last minute decision to be within walking distance of all of DC's main attractions. I had no idea what to expect and after indulging on several Yelp reviews, I decided to take the plunge. Another reason why Yelp is the only way to go when trying to find something new that can be trusted. The prices were a bit steep ($140+ per night), but after learning it's location near George Washington University, I ended up being OK with the wallet emptying price. And seeing a bunch of hot girls in Lululemon never hurts either. Surprised no one ever said that. As a warning, parking is valet only, so it can be pricey. But it's central location within a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Lincoln Memorial and White House make it well worth the extra cash. Did I mention the hot college girls in Lululemon? I've only stayed in one hotel in DC, but I'm tempted to make this place the standard. I'll definitely be back. read more

The River Inn is a nice older hotel in DC. The room was comfortable and roomy. It even has a full kitchen with utensils. My only complaints are that parking is hard to find and the Wi-Fi blocks a lot of websites. My wife could not go to the Sims 3 site because it was blocked. read more

When you visit this hotels website you are greeted by a list of "5 reasons to stay here". Two of my major concerns with this hotel are on this list of reasons to stay! Can you say false advertisement? #1 complaint " free WiFi". Although the hotel does offer free WiFi it is pretty much inaccessible. They have some type of time or bandwidth restriction I just don't understand. When trying to sign in with the provided password a little box pops up to tell you, "you may begin accessing the internet in (x) hours. We would sign in around 7:30-8 am to check directions and etc. When we came back to the hotel between 8pm and midnight we would try to sign in and it would tell us we had to wait 6-12 hours!!!! So needless to say we used an excessive amount of mobile data sitting in our room " with free WiFi" #2 complaint; the hotel website and the website I used to book both say each suite has a "full kitchen". This is true except there is a counter mounted range top and no oven. We thought we would save some money one night and stopped at " Trader Joes" (just down the block) and picked up food. We felt a little lazy so we grabbed some frozen fries as a side. . . well again needless to say we were quite disappointed to get back to the room and have no way to bake them. Well if you have read through my complaints and aren't completely turned off, let me assure you that this hotel is in a great location. Its only a 5 minute walk to the metro. Ten minutes to Georgetown (the dining/shopping capital of downtown DC). And a 25 minute walk to the Lincoln monument and national mall. They are very well positioned on a quiet side street and so great for that quiet romantic feel, or for those with younglings. (I will warn you though that in this location you are absolutely surrounded by Greeks (frats and sorority's) and other college housing. The hotel is kept very clean (as are all Modus hotels) and front desk staff very friendly. So far as room service is concerned, this is definitely 3 star quality. After our first night we left early and came back to find the room looking exactly as it had when we first arrived, except for our stuff! The second day we came back to find the bed made, half of our dirty towels still there, and one set of fresh towels laid haphazardly outside of the bathroom. They couldn't even get the towels in the bathroom??? Never seen that before. One day they decided to clean all the rooms surfaces, we came back to the room to find the TV pushed up against the wall (almost off the stand it sits on). Half the pillows from the bed were thrown on the couch. And the little magazine stands glass tabletop shoved almost halfway off the table! I have stayed in a few Modus hotels in DC and would recommend "Avenue suites" as the more high end (and slightly more expensive) alternative. All things considered this is a great place to stay! We loved this hotel and have already recommended it to others. The employees at the front desk were super friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean a spacious enough for us. The space is tastefully decorated and beds are comfortable. We actually had 4 people in the room with the pull out couch. We did not spend much time at the hotel itself, but it was a perfect home base for us, for the weekend. You could not get a better location for a leisurely weekend. Georgetown is right over the bridge in one direction and the White House and Renwick are within walking distance in the other direction. The Foggy Bottom Metro is about 2 blocks away (as is GWU). This is an historic little residential neighborhood where alot of GWU and Georgetown students live. Very safe and well lit area. Lots of restaurants in every direction. Will stay here whenever we need a room in DC. read more

I was introduced to this place for a business place and stayed there twice. It's great because most of the mainline hotels in DC get booked up quickly. This is a lesser known place, but just a good quality. The rooms are good sized (especially if you get a corner room), decent views, furnishings are high quality - almost an art deco or contemporary theme. Only thing is the bathrooms though clean, aren't as updated as the rest of the room. The restaurant downstairs has a limited selection and it's menu is on the typical expensive side. It's conveniently located near a Metro and GWU, but there aren't very many restaurants closeby. read more

A heads-up: the River Inn no longer supplies Aveda products in their bathrooms (sadness!) - they're now providing Neutrogena. I was quite pleased with my room during my 2-night stay. The kitchenette was SUCH a useful part of the room! I was able to grind coffee beans with their coffee grinder for super-fresh coffee in the morning and stash a pint of sorbet and some beers from the Trader Joe's located a short walk away. Another plus: the room was quiet. I didn't hear much of any noise at all from the other rooms. Only once did I hear a (VERY VERY LOUD) garbage truck picking up a dumpster from the alley below me, but since I was already awake, I didn't care. This may be the most convenient hotel in the Foggy Bottom area, located within a nice tree lined neighborhood it is walking distance to the Metro, Trader Joes and Whole Foods. The restaurant/bar in the hotel is way above what you would expect for quality and the staff is truly top notch--hard to find this kind of care anywhere these day. I had a junior suite with the kitchenette--everything you need is included (except food), the housekeeping staff made not just the room but the kitchen spotless every day (was there for five days). They also have a free bike rental is you like--great view of the Watergate hotel--will stay here again. read more

The room was spacious, with kitchenette, a love seat, and a tv with free HBO. There was room enough to do yoga and it was ideal for watching the NCAA Final Four. Apples and flavored waters grace the lobby, and the front desk was quick with a tooth brush and toothpaste. Tia was really great when I explained upon check in that I was susceptable to remote contacts, about which I had had to report to previous hotels and in some cases the police. She checked on me soon after I was in my room. Later in the evening I started to experience disturbances, and the gentleman on that shift was not so smooth in his handling of my reporting to the front desk. I explained how it should be done, as across town a night earlier The Fairfax at Embassy Row did a great job with a similar complaint, likely seasoned by their hosting such notables as The Gores and the Bushes. It was the disturbances and the night clerk's reaction that turned an otherwise 4-star experience to a 2 star. read more

I stayed here for four nights on a family vacation with my older brother (17) and parents. We all really enjoyed this hotel for a number of reasons. The room was clean, if not a little plain (although, my mom liked the decor). It was originally an apartment building so the room came complete with a kitchen-ette. It had plenty of space for a bed (queen size?), a couch, two dressers, a small coffee table, and a desk big enough for two. There was plenty of space in the many night stands and drawers to not have stuff floating around the room. Included with every room is high-speed internet acces in the form of two ethernet jacks and complementary wifi in the lobby. The location was also great. The Foggy Bottom Metro station is situated nearby, and Georgetown is within walking distance. The neighborhood just feels different from anything I've experienced in New York or Chicago. I don't have much to say about the price, but I got the impression that it was pretty good. There were some little annoying bits. One of the two ethernet jacks didn't work (we had along two laptops, so one had to broadcast wirelessly to the other). I just felt that zome bits of the hotel were a bit unpolished, but on the whole it was a great stay. read more

The Staff is very friendly and helpful!!!! Great quaint location and could be a wonderful place. I think the staff and management are doing the best they can. However, in my brief stay due to "issues" I would say the owner/company needs to seriously invest some money into daily maintenance!!!!!ASAP!. The least of the problems I noticed was the black tape around the inside of my window, plus the window metal trim waa bent and the drapes could not be opened. I was supposed to stay a week and left after a night for "issues" the staff could not make right in an hour or two. I was thrilled when I arrived at the initial sight based on location and potential until a major issue arose. The hotel needs $$$ spent on it and that is nothing the staff can change or improve. Great location by the metro and walking distance to the national mall and really all of the DC tourist spots. Just came back after a brutally cold weekend (5 degrees with the windchill) so the local spots for food were must needed. 10 minutes on foot to Georgetown and 15 on foot to DuPont Circle. Service was great, they quickly responded to all of my requests and questions. Hot water wasn't nearly as hot enough but may be the exception not the rule. We are walking everywhere and love coming home to our great room with many restaurants nearby and a Trader Joe's and Whole Foods walking distance, a few blocks. So after hours of countless hotel searching, I finally settled on The River Inn for my DC adventure. Why? Great (safe) location and great price. I also really like the vibe that I got from the place from the pictures that I looked at online. I was not disappointed with this decision. Upon arrival the staff was extremely helpful in getting my guest and I settled into our room. We arrived on a Friday night, so street parking was free and lucky for us, we found a great spot on the same street as the hotel. The lobby of the hotel is unique and (to me) has that 'New York City' cultured and classy feel to it. When we got to our room I was pleasantly surprised with its size, with a huge king bed set in the center, a nice TV, a bathroom and a couch/sitting area. The room was extremely clean and had a huge window overlooking the street. That night we walked to all the monuments and walked to all the museums the next day, we never had to move the car and we were able to walk to everything we wanted to see from the hotel. Also, this hotel is located in the historic 'Foggy Bottom' area of DC, so the area has a ton of character. I would absolutely stay here again! read more

I stayed at the River Inn for 2 weeks while on tour with a show that was playing at the Kennedy Center. I have to say, on first glance, it doesn't seem like much, but after 2 weeks here, I came to absolutely love it. Location: Perfect. There are plenty of things within walking distance- restaurants, bars, a 7-11, a CVS, Trader Joes, Whole Foods. And if you feel like walking a little farther, all the shops and eateries of Georgetown. It's also a short car ride away (approx $8 uber) from all the touristy spots of DC (white house, capitol, museums). I walked to and from the Kennedy Center daily, and it was a nice walk (approx 8-10 min), in a safe neighborhood- I never felt unsafe walking after shows at night. Service: AWESOME. They welcome you back every time you walk in the door. Anything you need, they are there to help. Amenities: The amenities are what made this review a 4 star instead of a 5 star. Kitchenette was great to have (especially with 2 grocery stores within walking distance), but I wish more utensils had been provided (2 forks/knives/spoons, 1 frying pan, 1 pot, 1 cooking utensil). Room was a good size (though note: not all suites have a king bed), everything was very clean. The free bikes for guests that they advertise are not available in the winter time (we ended up using the Lime bikeshare system). There was only one washer and dryer at the hotel and it is coin operated (you can get change at the front desk). The restaurant on site was pretty good- but I would have liked the bar to stay open later. My entire cast/crew returned to the hotel each night at 10:40pm, and every night the bar was already closed, or in the process of shutting down. Had they been open when we got back, we would have been there every night with the business of at least 10 people. Despite the amenities, I still very much enjoyed my stay here and I would definitely stay again on my next trip to DC, work or not. read more

The rooms are mini-suites with a small seating area, a desk area and a kitchenette. Nothing helps me maintain my sanity on the road like a kitchenette. I've always been curious about the name though. They're three or four blocks from the Potomac River! One minor complaint. The WiFi is SLOW. It is FREE though. And worth every penny! read more

Liked everything about the place, lots of towels in the bath, comfortable bed, lots of dressers and storage, good all around, excellent attentive staff and VERY economical. Would definitely return. The biggest problem I had here is something that others have complained about.....very slow internet. I mean really, how can you run a large Inn like this and have third rate internet service? Earlier this year I stayed in a semi run down hotel in Costa Rica with better service than this! Two blocks from the Metro and a Whole Paychecks store and in a very quiet neighborhood. Me and my Junior year class (8 students and 3 adults... only part of the class went on this trip) in High School took a trip to Washington D.C (back in 2013) and we stayed in this River Inn for 6/7 days. I can't really give this an official review because I mostly forgot everything. But when we stayed here, there was no Wi-Fi... But there was a Ethernet port (I think) for your laptop. If there was Wi-Fi, then I didn't use it probably because it was slow and weak signal. The staff were friendly, the room was clean, and to top it off it had a small but decent kitchen to cook or make food like ramen noodles. But to add to this review so it won't be boring and informative, The River Inn is close to a Subway (not the subway metro, but the food Subway), Whole Foods, TGI Fridays, 7 Eleven, Market (to buy small goods and food) and a Metro only a few blocks away to hop on or off the subway. read more

This hotel is in the heart of Foggy bottom and next (walking distance) to Georgetown. I have stayed here two weekend in a row since Halloween weekend of 2009. I absolutely loved this hotel. The rooms are huge, it has a kitchen, a big Queen almost King bed, it has a sofa bed and a table, a desk for an office and a kitchen. YEs a kitchen.. It also has a big bathroom that comes with another side room for a vanity. While my boyfriend got ready I had the vanity all to myself. It's always great to have a mirror that big, especially for any girl/woman who likes to take her time getting prepped up... I will definetly make this hotel my place of stay in the near future. My room was $130 and it was soooo worth it.. FYI: Late night take out at Cafe Romeo's.. Their wings and their Gyros are mmmmmmmazing! read more

Great location, close to Metro, Whole Foods, etc. however be careful as they will try to have you sign up for infrequent room service (not daily). We were there four days with no room service. When I mentioned it at leAving they pointed out a 10 dollar credit. A 10 dollar credit for no room service for a 4 day stay? The bill was 1,100 dollars for four days. The deal was they were supposed to clean in day three, someone did show up at 4 pm. However we had just got in for the day and said please later. To the best of my knowledge never tried again. Have daily room service it is not worth 5 dollars. It is not saving environment but saving ownership money. read more

Location: Great! Easy walk to Foggy Bottom and Georgetown. But on a residential street, so no other restaurants next door. Service: Terrible! The front desk acts as though they are running an apartment building rather than a hotel. Very uncoordinated. They can't coordinate with the restaurant and didn't know how to get me a room service menu. Room size: Gigantic! I had a 10 day stay here, so wanted more than a bed. The suites have a tiny kitchen (that kind of smells bad) and a big living room area with a dining table. Food: Better than average. The restaurant and room service provide well-thought-out food, but your typical generic type. It's just frustrating that it's so uncoordinated. It's difficult to order breakfast two days in a row. I'm giving The River Inn 5 stars not because it's a 5-star hotel (the way the hotel industry rates itself), but because we really enjoyed our stay here in a 5-star kind of way. :) The room was very clean and comfortable. I checked for bed bugs and other vermin - there were none. The bed was comfy, and I especially liked that there wasn't one of those gross comforters that they never wash. I loved the setup - there was a bathroom, "dressing room," bedroom/living area/dining area, and kitchenette. There was lots of shelving and counter space, so you don't have to put your luggage on the floor. The kitchen was so fully stocked, it was awesome! They even had fresh coffee beans that you could grind yourself! And as others have mentioned, there's a Trader Joe's just a couple of blocks away, and there's a Whole Foods Market just a little farther in another direction. I liked the wide windows with plenty of natural light, and I liked the quiet rooms and the picturesque, quiet street. There are so many pros, they outweigh the few cons... - I wish the TV had more options for kids. They only had 1 kid-ish channel, TOON network, which isn't really even for kids. They just had adult cartoons like American Dad. They had a couple of kid's options on the pay channels, but we didn't want to spend $4 on Dora on principle. I know that visitors shouldn't come to Washington, D.C. to veg in front of the TV, but sometimes you need to distract your kid for a few minutes and PBS Kids would have been very much appreciated. - It would be nice to add a dish soap or hand soap dispenser in the kitchenette. - Our room was right next to the elevator, and we could hear it ding in the mornings sometimes. Maybe if they could add insulation around the room door, it would help. (Is "insulation" even the right word? Anyway, you know what I mean...) Overall, this place was very comfortable, a good value, and the housekeeping and front door staff were all very kind. We'd definitely stay again if we can find another good deal. read more

OK so here is the "real" deal, it has a nice lobby and after reading some of the reviews about the wear and tear, they were right... From the minute you step in the elevator, the carpet is riped and dirty... once you arrive to your room you notice that the wall paper is puckered and the carpet appears clean, until you take your shoes off and walk on it with your socks/bare feet and you realize, this carpet has not been shampooed for your arrival.... We are on the 7 th floor and the room is big, but noisy.... we were awaken to trash trucks at 7:30(fridays) and employees cursing below.... not a good end to a 4 day trip.. The location is close, but honestly, it is very noisy, with the truck sounds and the airplane noise and to top it off, the air conditioner in the bedroom is very loud....so unless you are a sound sleeper, the rotation will wake you... I had to wear ear plugs! The staff is great and polite and attentive and they alone deserve 5 stars! And there is no parking, you have to valet park and its not cheap. But think before you book....my next trip next month will be back to Virginia.... much quieter :) and cleaner. read more

I stayed here with my family over spring break to take in the sights. On the bright side, the staff was very helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean and the location was good for what we wanted. Foggy bottom metro is less than 10 minute walk. Waterside restaurants are a 15 minute walk. Trader Joe's is a 10 minute walk and there is a Whole Foods 2 minutes from the metro. On the down side, the furniture was old and uncomfortable, the building is old and worn and there was no air conditioning. Thankfully there was only one day where the air conditioning would have been nice. The remainder was cool enough that it wasn't a factor. If you want a reasonable place to stay, where you can prepare a few meals and you don't mind the old paint and fixtures, then this might do. Otherwise I would recommend you keep looking. read more

We just completed a 5-night stay at this hotel. The room was very large, the kitchen was clean and extrememly useful for such a long stay (especially when you have a child with you!). The rooms were clean, the staff helpful and friendly and the restaurant downstairs was fabulous (albeit expensive). The neighborhood is wonderful! Beautiful, tree lined streets, residential area and about a 5 minute walk (if that) to the Foggy Bottom Metro station which will get you anywhere you want to go in the District. The only drawback was the size of the bathroom. It's about as big as a closet and the shower seemed very small. It wasn't enough of a problem to change my overall opinion of the hotel though. The nightly rate is significantly lower than other hotels in the area which makes it a great value! read more

Older hotel, but overall nice. The rooms have updated furniture and TVs. Our TV in the main room didn't work with the remote, and the bedroom TV was mounted below the bed level. Biggest disappointment was the next to useless WiFi. It was either terribly slow or non functional. Lucky ATT and Verizon LTE work there (if you have a good tethering plan). Staff was 98% good. Nice Hotel with lots of History. I stayed here on my Honeymoon this past year. We stayed in a deluxe suite that could have easily accommodated 6 people. The River Inn is close distance to Foggy Bottom metro and George Washington University, so need to rent a car and pay all those extra parking fees. It is a short walk into historical Georgetown where there is plenty of restaurants and shopping. Service was very good and front desk personal very helpful. I was not disappointed at all with our stay at the River Inn. I would stay there again in the future. Prices were not too bad, around $240 per night and that is good for being in the nations Capital. read more

Came to this place for the weekend I loved everything about this place. Staff was friendly, comfortable beds, kitchen so you can save some money and make your meals, great location ( close to Whole Foods trade joes). I would recommend this to anyone. It's a 30 minute walk to the museums or a 8 dollar taxi trip. read more

Fantastic hotel. Just returned from our second stay @ The River Inn. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are CLEAN, very spacious, bright and inviting. Plenty of drawer and closet space. Efficiency kitchen with everything you need to prepare a meal. We were there celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and was surprised with a bottle of champagne and a personal note from the manager. Located on a quiet residential street. Very close to the Metro, restaurants, bars, grocery stores & GW University. Easy 10 minute walk to Georgetown. A bit longer walk to the White House, Lincoln & Washington monument area. We will be making reservations shortly @ The River Inn for our next trip to D.C. in August. read more

My husband and I were in Washingtoon, DC to see our son perform at The Kennedy Center and wanted a hotel near that venue. We prefer small hotels so were intrigued when we read about The River Inn. It didn't disappoint! It is in a lovely neighborhood and we were able to walk to the Kennedy Center which is about a half mile away. Our room, which had a small but full kitchen, was lovely. The ambiance of the hotel was great as was the service. There is a small restaurant in the hotel that is perfect for breakfast or a drink before heading out for the evening. My husband was able to easily walk to the Lincoln Memorial on his morning walk. Georgetown was just minutes away by car. There are numerous restaurants in the neighborhood. There is a convenient Metro stop as well. Staying at The River Inn was a great experience. We will definitely stay there again when we visit Washington, DC. read more
