Just so there is no misunderstanding Riverstone is not a heath food restaurant. It is a family-friendly country restaurant that serves up delicious comfort food prepared on the premises. My wife and I always look forward to the friend green tomatoes when we visit the Smokies. They are cooked up in the kitchen using fresh green tomatoes purchased from a local vendor. My wife ordered a BLT with extra lettuce and tomato. It arrived at the table exactly as she specified. Delicious ! I had the BBQ pork sandwich which was much better than what you get at most BBQ specialty restaurants. Service was excellent thanks to our friendly server Brooke. We couldn't even get seated!! Lots of available tables & at least one table in addition that had not been cleaned. I don't really think it was a staffing issue as at one time there were 3 employees talking at the checkout counter. There was another couple ahead of us that also gave up & left. We waited about 10 minutes & if a restaurant is full it's not an issue, we would have gladly waited for a table in that instance. They may have great food but we'll never know! read more

Terrible experience. We waited for over one half an hour after ordering a cheese burger with fries and found that others who had arrived after us were being served but our rather simple order was not yet completed. We eventually paid for our coffee and left to dine elsewhere. Upon returning to our home in Oak Ridge, TN, we learned that our son, on a previous occasion, visited this same restaurant last fall and had a similarly unacceptable experience. I ordered catfish with 2 sides which I chose "seasoned" green beans and Mac and cheese. Nothing is fresh. It's either frozen and deep fried or from a can. It was great! Good atmosphere a little loud but it's because they have a lot of customers. The lady with the silver hair and gauges is really cool. The catfish plate comes with 2 sides and hush puppies, there are so many options that you will find something great. Came here for an evening dinner with my family, was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service. Country fried steak, mashed potatoes, and turnip greens were all perfect. I've been coming to Townsend twice a year for 15 years. First time coming here was last weekend, we went twice. Breakfast the first morning was great, our waitress was really kind and food was wonderful. On the menu, it says breakfast plates come with hash browns and a biscuit or toast and we were both charged additional but honestly- food was good enough we didn't mind much and didn't say anything. The next day the rest of our friends joined us and we did a quick hike and were super hungry, but wanted to have dinner at the cabin so we came in to grab burgers to go. We had talked the place up to our friends so they we'd excited! Super simple orders- 4 burgers (one of us wasn't eating). Want to preface by saying I worked in restaurants for 4 years so I absolutely understand difficult customers but this just wasn't the case. The wait staff was EXCEPTIONALLY rude. We had to ask 3 different people to have our orders taken and they acted like they didn't see 5 girls standing in a 20-table restaurant. Acted exasperated by our orders and just overall frustrated. I asked a question about BBQ sauce and you would've thought I asked for something insane. They were super nice to everyone around us- guess it's because they were locals? We all tipped over 20% anyway. One girl all but threw my friends meal down, after announcing what it was my friend said "oh that's mine" and she replied "I don't know whose it is." And then loudly said to her friend she needed to walk outside bc she "needed a break".... the manager (I'm assuming) stood in a circle with the three girls talking in hushed tones and motioning our way while we waited for our food. I genuinely don't know what we did to upset them so badly. Our burgers tasted good, though! Fries were yummy. Food was fine for both visits. None of the orders were actually right as far as no onions or add Mayo, but that was fine too. Just don't think we deserved to be treated w such disdain for being patrons and ordering food in a... restaurant. But we won't go again on our future trips. The next morning we went to the snoring bear diner down the road and they were so so kind, would definitely recommend them over this place unless you're a local! read more

Food was ok, nothing special or great....We had the chips & queso, chicken strips, and sides (okra, pinto beans, cole slaw). Maybe other dishes are better, these were just ok. Also kept having to swat away the flies that were inside, which I know can't be helped sometimes, but other restaurants we ate at didn't seem to have a fly problem. read more

My wife and I were staying at the river stone lodge for a wedding, so we figured we'd try their on premises restaurant. When we walked in, we felt like we walked into a quaint southern universe, a million miles away from our yankee norms. Everything in the joint was made of wood, including "chandeliers" made from 2x4's and sturdy branch walking sticks for sale. The place was packed, everyone looked to be 6'5 and 250 pounds, which I can only assume I would be too if I ate here more regularly. I got the impression that if you ask for a skim decaf cappuccino or rice milk whole grain cereal, someone wearing Bubba named overalls will mutter "You must not be from around here" and hurl you out. The menu featured all the creamy, buttery, bacony comfort foods the south is deliciously known for. We got the grits, biscuits and white pepper gravy, sausage and ham. I love grits and biscuits and gravy and Riverstone offers the absolute best that I, or my wife had ever had. The prices are cheap and the portions are massive. We came hungry and still had enough left over for another meal! As amazing and comprehensive as the breakfast menu was, the lunch menu looked even better. After a 12 mile hike at Cades Cove, this place hit the spot! Two tired, starving and near dehydrated hikers absolutely loved the food and service! Atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Food portions are huge and very good! The pot roast is fantastic as is the rainbow trout. I really liked the fried green tomatoes...not greasy at all and very crispy. And the fried okra was made from FRESH okra! Will be a regular stop for us!! Oh!! And the drinks never stopped refilling! Even accommodated and made a batch of 1/2 sweet and 1/2 unsweetened tea just for us:) great southern comfort dinner!! read more

We waited quite a while to get our food, probably due to the sudden large downpour of rain, but the catfish, okra, sweet tea, rolls and fries were EXCELLENT. They were well worth the 20 minute wait (and the waitress gave us some buttered rolls while we waited.) This place had hands down the best southern food I've had yet. If I weren't mistaken, I'd say this place is actually an old house converted into a restaurant. 100% honest to goodness a southern restaurant, and a lot of local folk from what it seems. Also, a friend of the restaurant owners came around and assisted us. I've never seen community like this before. Also, most people were drinking out of mason jars. I think they may have run out of clean ones by the time we showed up though. This was a great find for us on our last cabin trip. I'm so glad that we stopped at Riverstone Family Restaurant on our way back from Cades Cove. Love the food & service. The restaurant seems very warm & cozy. Parking lot is located in the back of the restaurant. We have camped and hiked in the Smokies for years, and have stopped at this restaurant 2-3 times a year. Breakfast is NOT what it used to be. The French Toast was not made the same and not good. The cheese omelet was not tasty or well made, and none of the people there were any of the people I recognized for years. The ladies there are wonderful. We were in there tonight and there was a man being rude. He was correct in what he was saying but his presentation was horrible. You never know what someone else is going through, (unless you pay attention). So just always try to be nice. The customer may always be right but they are not always kind.
