Tried it and will not return. Went for lunch with my spouse. Decor fine but place was empty on a Friday, so sat at bar. Bar mistress had demeanor of a prison guard , odd choice of country music blasting. Looking for light meal so ordered sandwiches. My bifana was good but was hit with a $5.0 surcharge for onions and peppers ( twice what I would expect anywhere else). My wife got fish sandwich. Latter was tiny and tasteless. First time here. In an area with competitive Portuguese cuisine this restaurant is just ok. Parking lot is small but there is street parking. Decor is cute. Wine list is extensive. My glass of water had an ice cube with a foreign body in it. Looked like some sort of paper. I had the marinated pork with potatoes and clams. Clams were chewy and some looked under cooked. Dad had the shrimp Mozambique. Slice potatoes were not very flavorful. Mom had pork with potatoes. I did love the marinade on the meats. The paper in my water threw me off. Service was just ok. We tried the Roasted Pig based on a recommendations for their "dinner for 2" special. We're so glad we went! The service and food were both excellent. The meal started with soft bread, toasted bread, and olives. I had the fish & chips with broccoli instead of rice. The fish was very lightly coated in an egg batter and flour, which I loved. The fries and fish weren't greasy at all. My son's shrimp Mozambique was a great sized portion with big shrimp. What a great experience! We celebrated our friend's birthday at The Roasted Pig and everything was incredible. I would highly recommend the spicy wings - wow! My husband and I fell upon this restaurant on a road trip home to CT after a hospital visit to a dear friend. We were in need of both alimentary and spiritual nourishment and received both. The voice on the phone when we called from the road with our ETA was welcoming and Lucy, our waitress, made us feel like honored guests. Her menu selections were spot on and her attention was attentive without being intrusive. The food was delicious, with different sauces and types of potato preparation depending on the item - nothing felt generic. The portions were ample so we're bringing some home, but we left room to share a flan. It was not too sweet. We left feeling comfort for our friend and optimistic about humanity in general. The Roasted Pig is a balm in a troubled world. Although not the closest Portuguese restaurant to I-195, it was well worth the slight detour. read more

"The Roasted Pig" is a restaurant in New Bedford that honors the prototypical "old world" Portuguese dining menu of Southeastern Massachusetts while also implementing some small but very effective changes that move the experience forward for more contemporary and sophisticated diners. For one, the service is provided by a wait-staff who really understand and are enthusiastic about the food they're serving, which is surprisingly rare in New Bedford's Portuguese restaurants, often somber places with frowning faces that radiate a depressing vibe. Here, the ambience is bright, the energy is high, and the staff is awesome. I could nit-pick about the restaurant's "Top 40" soundtrack during lunch service, but it was at a non-distracting volume. Great value can be had at "Roasted Pig" for lunch -- their special is 2 entrées and a pitcher of sangria for $25.95. That's a tremendous deal, and my party took advantage of it. Before that, we ordered some starters. The "Portuguese Soup of the Day" was Portuguese Kale Soup - a good rendition of this leafy soup that immediately brought me back to my childhood as I sipped the meaty broth while the green kale and tender cabbage dissolved on my tongue. Before kale became a national "super food" phenomenon, we New Bedford-ites grew up on this stuff! This is a lighter Portuguese Kale Soup in that there are no chunks of linguiça in it, even if its essence can be savored throughout. I also ordered the "Chouriço à Bombeiro," a flambé of Portuguese sausage, doused in rum and flame-grilled in an Assador de Barro. Anyone from New Bedford knows that this dish is marvelous regardless of where you get it. Having grown up in New Bedford with Portuguese family members, I've had this dish a thousand times at different places. However, what they're doing with it at the "Roasted Pig" may make this version my favorite -- they've managed a beautiful char and crackly skin on the chouriço without it getting too dry inside. I suspect they're cheating somehow (e.g. injecting it with a liquid agent that is keeping the inside temperature down while the outside gets "crispy" brown), but I'm just speculating on that. For my entrée, I ordered the "Camarão à Moçambique," which features sautéed shrimp in a lip-smacking sauce accompanied by rice pilaf and green beans. This is another regional favorite that "The Roasted Pig" nails. Shrimp Mozambique (aka Camarão à Moçambique) is the iconic dish that has made me miss New Bedford the most since moving away. This is not fancy food, it exists to satisfy the hunger of Portuguese fishermen. The sauce is a combination of beer, garlic, lemon, butter, azafrán, and some hot sauce -- so simple, yet so delicious. Here, it is taken to the next level with the addition of an assertive woody spice or herb I couldn't quite completely discern that rounds it out without changing it fundamentally. Another new twist on an old favorite. Bravo! I was brought here by two of my high school friends, Katie and Paul of Fairhaven's "The Nook," two restaurant owners who know New Bedford's dining scene and food options as well as anyone. The staff at this establishment is extremely rude. I waited 15 minutes before someone even acknowledged me standing at the door waiting for a table. They all looked at me, but never said anything. When the lady finally came over (after I had to question other customers, about who I should speak to) the lady asked what I wanted. I told her I would like to put my name in for a table. The website said they close at 10PM. It was 7:30PM. She asked me how many & I said 2 adults and a toddler. She told me they didn't have time for that, that they close at 9PM. Mind you two tables were open with no people at them. I wouldn't have minded waiting, but to tell me you don't have time for me, when supposedly you close in an hour and a half is rude & ridiculous. Oh, how we used to love The Roasted Pig! My husband and I went there tonight for dinner with our daughter. We were excited to try it again as we haven't been in quite sometime. We actually had found an old gift card which is what prompted us to return. When we walked in, the hostess (manager) greeted us, asked how many and then responded with a blunt "do you have a reservation?" I was taken back by the way it was asked especially as I looked around and saw multiple open tables. She then seated us anyway. There was a duo playing who were very talented. It was a great touch for the night. Good job on the entertainment! Our server came over awhile later with bread and olives. We gave her our drink and dinner orders since we had plenty of time to decide. She brought our drinks but never brought my requested water. The table to the side of us received their appetizers well after we placed our order and then received their entrees. We just sat there with empty drinks ignored by everyone around us. Finally (seriously at least 15 minutes later), our server appears and we place another drink order. She told us our food would be right out. She brought the drinks right over but we still sat waiting for our meals. The food eventually showed up and was excellent. Our meals were even better than what I remembered from our last visit. It's a shame that the back of the house is so poorly represented. The quality of the food deserves so much better service. Once again, we sat around waiting for our server who disappeared again once our food was delivered. Our dishes were mostly empty except we needed one takeout box. Eventually another server came over and asked if I needed a box. She quickly brought one. I pulled out my gift certificate and credit card as a sign that we wanted to leave. A few minutes later a different server came over and said she would clear our dishes for us in a minute. She went to her own table and then came over as promised. I told her I just wanted to cash out and gave her our payment. This is where our next issue arises. She sees it and says they probably can't accept it since it's from the previous ownership. She also points out it is from 2014. I said the restaurant has the same name and honoring it is the right thing to do. She said she would check with the manager. In the meantime our server comes by to clear dishes and ask if we want dessert. I told her the other server already had our card to pay. She seemed surprised to hear that. The other server returns saying the manager said they can't take it since it's from when Fernando owned the restaurant. I paid the bill and we were on our way. On our way out, I noticed the manager (hostess) was sitting at the bar on Snapchat and our server was now bartending. I approached the manager and told her how disappointing our visit was. I told her the service was horrific and her response was "where were you seated?" Besides the fact that there's only 15 tables in the place, it's customary to apologize to a disappointed customer. I told her how we sat around unattended as she pulled our server behind the bar. I then also told her I couldn't believe they wouldn't accept the gift card since they bought the business and didn't change the name, logo or even drink menu. She said "he said we can't accept them from Fernando." I'm assuming "he" is the new owner. "He" needs to take a hospitality class and then provide some training to his staff. It's such a shame that this was our experience because we were so excited to go back there but have no desire to return now. I hope the $25 gift card that "he" refuses to honor was worth losing our business and possibly anyone else's who reads this review. The golden rule is a bad experience is spread 10:1 versus a good experience. Maybe they haven't learned this yet. My last piece of advice would be that the manager should be assisting the bar and checking on the guests not sitting at the bar on her phone. I also attached a picture showing that according to MA Law, gift cards have to have at least a 7 year period before expiration so the certificate being from 2014 was irrelevant. There was also no expiration date listed on the certificate. Good luck if you do decide to give this place a shot, we won't be back anytime soon. read more

We usually go to another Portuguese restaurant in the area, but that one was closed, so we decided to finally give the Roasted Pig a try. We started out with the fried calimari. Abner loved it because it has the pieces that look like little octopuses in it. We also had martinis (apple for me, espresso for Abner). Martinis were only $5.00! Huge too. They bring to the table a small bowl of olives and delicious Portuguese rolls too. For an entree, I had the Pork Alejantana and Abner had the Carne Espito (hope I spelled that right). Everything was very tasty. For dessert, we got the chocolate lava cake. Perfect ending to a great meal. Our server was really nice and very attentive. He told us that they do roast a pig every weekend. Abner was all over that, so I'm sure we'll be back for that some weekend. Portions and prices were good. Clean. There was a full bar too. The Yelp rave reviews brought us here on a very rainy Saturday afternoon. There was a table with around eight customers but other than that, the restaurant was fairly quiet. It was a lot nicer inside than I expected, very bright and airy. The bar had three large TV's with one on ESPN, one on CNN and the other on RTP (Portuguese channel). I started with the pear martini special for $5. It was huge and loaded with alcohol. It has a bit too much of a pineapple flavor for me, but that is a personal preference. There are a handful of draft beers available. My husband thought his draft beer wasn't very fresh. The waitress brought over bread and olives before taking our order. We started with the Spanish-style littlenecks. Boy, they were salty. Portuguese food always tends towards salty, but this was a bit more than normal. We received 11 littlenecks for $11.95. Tasty, but salty. There was definitely a long wait before our entrees arrived. I had the Pork Alentejana for $15.95. The portion was huge and it was loaded with pork. Two people could have easily split this. It had a good flavor, but was also too salty. My husband ordered the Mediterranean Salmon. He received the regular grilled salmon. It took so long for the meal to come out that we didn't bother asking for the correct meal. He thought it was OK. My kids love Portuguese food. I was recommended this restaurant by a Portuguese friend. My kids were not disappointed. We ordered the Chourico a Bombeoro. They actually light this on fire at your table. Delicious! For entrees we ordered Junior Steak, Spicy Cod, and marinated pork. The marinated pork was the best we have had at any Portuguese restaurant. The pork meat fell apart on the fork, really tender. The steak was ok. Not bad at all but nothing to rave about either.
