The Ruby is a restaurant connected right to the front lobby of Hotel Zed. The meals they serve are breakfast and lunch. Steve, myself and some in-laws went here in the morning after our overnight stay. There were a lot of good options to pick from sso we decided to share some of our meals with each other to try out a little bit of everything. I ordered just plain waffles, nothing with too many bells and whistles other than butter and syrup. The waffles were wonderful! Nice and airy where they needed to be and a very nice texture. Prepared to perfection actually. We also had the Rotisserie Chicken Hash also which was amazing. We were told to try a chicken dish while visiting Victoria and so we made sure we did. Came here on a Sunday morning as a party of 4 and had about a 20-30 minute wait. The restaurant is accessed through the hotel lobby, so we were able to hang out in the lobby until we got a table. The colorful decor and good music was great, plus there were plenty of board games to play. Parking was also easy, we just used the hotel's small lot. For food/drink, I tried: - Fried Chicken Benny - this was incredible. Chicken was perfectly seasoned and juicy, cornbread and hollandaise were great, potatoes were crispy and flavorful, I could go on. This might be the best brunch food I've had to date. - London Fog - also amazing! A big issue I run into with London fog lattes is that they're too milky, but this was not. I could taste the tea in every sip. I even passed it around the table for everyone to try, and they all agreed that this is the best one they've had in a while. My friends also loved their dishes and drinks, they specifically complimented the potatoes and duck. If I lived nearby I would definitely stop by at least once a week, but alas it'll have to wait until my next trip to Victoria. Highly highly recommend going if you have the chance! read more

A surprisingly wonderful breakfast option. Bright, lively atmosphere. Friendly staff. Good variety. However, my biggest compliment is that they are the only restaurant in Victoria that says they offer "hash browns" and then ACTUALLY serves you hash browns instead of wedge potatoes. =D Seriously, though, their pulled pork hash is divine and looks like the Eiffel Tower when it is served. The restaurant is attached to a funky hotel on the main street and had a vinyl player going with fun art work. Came here on a weekday for brunch. The location was interesting, in the hotel lobby of a 70s themed, family friendly hotel. I knew what I wanted to order prior to coming here - duck confit waffle! Overall the dish was great! The waffles were crispy on the outside, but it still had the soft interior. The duck wasn't dry, but I wouldn't consider it as juicy either (so somewhere in between). The bacon was quite dry, but I solved the problem by dipping it in syrup and making my own "candied bacon". My boyfriend had their special of the day, butter chicken hash. I got to try his dish, but it wasn't too memorable for me. He liked it though! I do think they need to improve on the wait time for the food. We waited for 30+mins. However, I do have to give them credit for keeping us posted on the status and apologizing for the long wait. read more

The service was good, not over the top. The main star chicken was lacking in so much flavor, I was expecting it to have more of a Herb and Smokey flavor not just boiled white chicken flavor. We ordered the 7 layer dip as a starter and it was ok, very dense for a dip. We were expecting it to have more of a creamy, cheesy & corny texture. For the entrees we had chicken n waffles which consisted of pulled chicken breast (which was lacking in flavor), 5 waffles, a poached egg, some green onions on top and a side of maple syrup and gravy (that was also lacking in flavor). I was so excited to try this dish and went there specifically for that and was so bummed about the chicken. The waffles was the only good thing on the plate they were crunchy and delicious. My husband had the chicken sandwich and he said the bread was way too wet and therefore got soggy. We waited about 15-20 for our food to be ordered. The food was tasty -waffles were up in the top 10 I've had in life, the fried egg was good minus the crusty ends, everything was really good....until I found a hair. I love this place. Whenever I visit Victoria, I try to stop here for brunch especially the duck confit & waffle. I have had different dishes like the breakfast poutine or the Canadian Benny. I had the Usual: two eggs and hash browns with one side (sausages for me) and choice of toast. The sausage was good. My wife had the tacos: choice of three types with hash browns. They came to the table cold. She couldn't eat the pork one: the others were edible with salsa and hot sauce. Now the good news. The service staff were friendly and helpful. I was visiting Victoria for a few days, which meant plenty of time to check out brunch places. There are two in town that we love, but warrant pretty long waits. My brother suggested that we check out The Ruby and honestly this place has now jumped to the top of my list. The Ruby on Douglas Street is located inside Hotel Zed's lobby area (would have been confusing to me if I was trying to navigate here myself). Hotel Zed is a pretty hip and unique looking place, which reminds me of something you'd find in Austin. There were a couple open tables when we went on a weekday around 9:30am. Our server was quick and attentive, and so sweet (which seems contrary to some of the reviews about slow service). I was going to try the duck confit waffles, but saw Yelpers' pictures of the fried egg sandwich and was intrigued. Glad I went with the sandwich (around $14), because everything on my plate was amazing! The bread is nicely toasted, eggs are runny, and it comes with a super yummy cheese crisp (this was what sold me. What can I say? I love cheese). The potatoes were also piping hot and delicious. My brother got a hash, but it was nothing to rave about. He ended up picking off my plate for the potatoes too. Coffee was great too. So in summary, 5 stars for the atmosphere, service, and my egg sandwich. I was also tempted to go downstairs to their ping pong lounge, but I'm sure that's for hotel guests. read more

Marked as a "pricey" place to eat but the amount of food made the price extremely reasonable. The restaurant was a fresh, clean, open space and nice music being played on a record player. Went with the build your own omelette and the banana candied pecan waffles. The omelette was nice and fluffy but the potatoes were the main attraction for me. Well seasoned, with a lack of grease making them feel less heavy than other fried potatoes. The waffle was great but keep in mind it is truly a dessert waffle, the candied banana and pecans are accompanied with a scotch syrup and whip cream. We popped in for breakfast as we were staying at the Hotel Zed, and the duck confit waffle blew my mind. It was really incredibly well executed duck confit, and the waffle was light was crispy. The hash browns that come with breakfasts are great too with a nice crunch. Coffee was great too. Not sure what they use, but it tasted like a modern medium dark roast from a third wave roaster. Our dark haired waitress on Sunday did deliver the food, not very efficiently, as it was not hot and not one smile for our table during the entire meal. At the end of the meal, when I was paying, I wanted to pay with credit and about $12.00 in Canadian $2.00 coins. She said do you expect me to count those? I realized that taking coin and credit was beyond her capabilities, so we just paid by credit. Regarding the food, the oatmeal was great, kids yogurt & granola is not kid-friendly. One of best breakfasts I've had...! We decided to try this place out after reading so many positive yelp reviews and it truly did not disappoint. This restaurant is on the same property as Hotel Zed, so it did get quite busy when we arrived probably from the guests that stay there. We had to wait about 30 minutes, but it wasn't so bad because they had lots of entertainment such as old type writers, board games; a record player (with lots of records). Our server was attentive and friendly. Had our water filled promptly although it was busy. I ordered the chorizo benny which came on top of a croissant (!!!) served with a side of hash browns. I asked for hollandaise sauce in the side as I usually don't like it, but their sauce was honestly BOMB. I ended up eating it all - used it as a sauce for the deliciously seasoned hash brown too. Ugh. I am drooling just thinking of this meal. The boyfriend got the breakfast tacos. These are served in a set of 3. He got Manny Tacquiao (lol), Swamp Dogg, and Ratt On. Our favourite was the swamp dogg- eggs, ground chorizo, hash, cheddar, and herb sour cream. He ordered another order of these tacos by the way. It's a cafe style restaurant that has eclectic food. It's in the lobby of a hotel. They serve food that can be quickly prepared. U can get 5 inch high waffles topped with chicken or bacon and an egg. Or U can get tacos. We ordered the taco enchilada meal. The tacos were served cold and were soggy. It came with a bean dip which was quite good and what they called enchiladas was just a flower tort filled with cheese and cut into 4 pieces..weird. It came with tortilla shells but not worth the $18 price tag, as they really skimped on the meat in the tacos. They are licensed though. Staff were friendly. It was busy and a place you should do once. But I dont like soggy cold prepared tacos. read more

Here's another brunch joint to add to your list when you're visiting Victoria. I've come here quite a handful of times by now and every visit has been better than the last! They have two locations, one on Douglas and one on Johnson, but I have only ever been to the one on Douglas. A couple of my faves: + Their breakfast tacos - 3 for the $12.95. You can't go wrong with any of their flavours, but my 2 personal faves are the Bosephus and Taco Man Randy Savage. + Skinny Hash - if you're wanting to eat semi-healthy, I'd recommend this dish. Veggies, hash, and all the delicious flavour. + Scrambled Tofu Hash - another delicious healthy/veggie dish. I've gotten this twice now and both times I licked my plate clean. + Mama's Fried Egg Sandwich - a good ol' delicious breakfast sandwich that you can't go wrong with. And they already add avocado to it at no cost extra, which I'm a huge fan of. + Rotisserie Chicken Hash - If you like rotisserie chicken and potato hash, just get this dish. You'll thank me later. + Rotisserie Chicken Tacos - again, just get these. You won't regret it. Needless to say, their menu is filled with plenty of delicious options.
