    Beautiful landscaping and colorful lighting

The Ruins is a REALLY cool place! I'd never heard of it until a friend's band was playing there, so I made the 70-minute drive to see them. The entire vibe of the place is completely unique. It is an open-air venue with no roof, and very weathered and dilapidated in the best way possible walls. It has lots of overhead string lights to keep things visible after the sun sets. The stage is big and is well-lit with different colored lights illuminating the walls behind the performers. The same holds true for the beautiful landscaping. The venue's PA is a modern digital QSC complete with stage monitors and subwoofers. It sounds absolutely fantastic! Seriously, one of the best I've ever heard. There were barrels that can be used for standing tables in front of the stage, as well as two big sets of folding chairs set up facing stage left and stage right. It was great to be able to sit for the show. If you're a wine drinker, they offer a large selection. I was happy to see a brand of kombucha I'd never seen before, and although very pricey, was very tasty. If you're looking for a wedding or event venue, or a great place to see a show, you really can't go wrong with The Ruins.

The restaurant had a varied, mouthwatering menu and the service was excellent. The rooms had an old world feel to them, but were mostly refurbished and updated. What we loved most was the varied gallery of paintings on walls on each floor and the old-fashioned lever driven elevator that was run by the staff. The views and the grounds were exquisite with a waterfall cascading by a lookout. An unusual and historic landmark hotel that's definitely worth a visit.

On the one hand, the grounds are lovely, with some nice views of a waterfall cascading down to the Columbia River. The hotel has nice "bones" and the interior incorporates a lot of Art Deco touches, although we didn't agree with every design choice. There's a cool, old-fashioned hand-operated elevator that needs a staff member to operate. My biggest issue had to do with the cost of the room in late October given that the view of the river was very limited by small-ish windows and trees. Overall, just not worth the $325/night rate. The hotel appears to be a prime destination for weddings, which could be fantastic if the weather cooperates. It is located just west of small Hood River, which appears to lack much in the way of fine dining, but does have a number of boutiques, a great brewpub (Pfriem), and a great coffee/breakfast place (Kickstand). For us, given all of the other waterfalls along the Gorge, I think we would have been just fine with a less expensive, less notable hotel for the night.
