After finding several pairs of shoes I was interested in - I saw there were none out on the shelves in my size - so I asked for help. A young man came over to help me - I told him which three pairs I was interested in - 11.5 Wide. So he says to me: 10.5 Wide - right? No. I reiterate I want 11.5 Wide. He goes in the back and comes out with a pair in 10.5 Wide for one style, and 11.5 Wide in another. No - please - listen to me! I'm not sure what this kid's problem was, but he tells me no more shoes in that size. I try on the one that he did bring out in 11.5 Wide - Bingo! They fit and are comfortable! So I find another pair I want them to check on - this time I am not interacting with Einstein, I find a pleasant young lady named Kelly to help me. She checks - and no - nothing is available. So she then rings me up. Not sure if I would go back here unless the selection in sizes gets better.

Extremely disappointing experience with Dick's Sporting Goods…read more I recently had knee surgery and was unable to leave my house or drive for an extended period of time. I am a volleyball coach and regularly tell all of my players to shop at Dick's Sporting Goods. My husband is also a basketball coach and recommends Dick's to his players as well, so our family has spent a significant amount of money with this company over the years. I had purchased knee pads in both a medium and a small. My daughter tried on the medium, which fit, and never even tried on the small. I was still within the 90-day return period and simply wanted to exchange the unused, brand-new small pair for a different size. Because of my surgery, I could not drive until my doctor medically cleared me. The closest Dick's Sporting Goods is an hour away, so once I was finally able to drive, I made the long trip and spent a considerable amount of money on gas just to make this return. Not only did they refuse to exchange an unused item that was still within the 90-day period, but the manager was extremely condescending and rude about it. I was not asking for a refund or trying to return something used. I simply wanted to exchange an unused pair of knee pads for the correct size. After years of recommending Dick's Sporting Goods to my athletes and spending money there myself, this experience has seriously changed my opinion of the company. The policy may be the policy, but the way this situation was handled, especially by the manager, was completely unacceptable. Customer service and common sense should matter, particularly when a customer is making a reasonable request under unusual circumstances.

I remember years ago that they used to sell even camping equipment and items like hunting gear but it looks like they no longer carry such items based on my visit today. Nevertheless.....In all, a legit a legitimate sporting goods retailer with a wide selection of top-brand athletic gear. The store ioffers wide selection of popular brands, including Nike, Adidas, and North Face, as well as their own private-label brand, DSG. I did score on a pair of running shoes that were on sale and a decent price but decided to put my workout gear back as to. I know I can find better prices online. Price point set aside, I appreciate the variety of products and at least knowing there is a solid sporting good s store in the area. You can't go wrong here, searching for miscellaneous, sporting goods items. The staff here are very helpful with answering questions, locating items, and helping you navigate the store.

I was able to easily find what I was looking for which was harder to find at some other locations. The staff was in the job as I was asked twice if I needed help finding anything. I already had what I came for in hand a was just browsing at this point. I must say they have to have the largest selection of women's workout clothes from all brands at this location. Clothing and shoes for the most part are downstairs while accessories, equipment, etc are upstairs. You can easily get lost in everything they have to offer here. Plenty of parking available and you can access the mall from the back side of the store on both levels.

Bought some products via online purchasing and lo and behold they needed to be returned…read more Unfortunately there is no REI Co-Op in Loudoun County so we trekked on to Fairfax County. REI is located in the Fairfax Govt Ctr shopping area. Staff is friendly but very picky about returns. It was obvious my products were new in original boxes with tags still on the products but this staff member inspected it with detail. I discovered today that they even have a monthly free bike clinic, where their bike mechanics will completely inspect your bike for safety and wear and tear issues. If I was really into snowboarding this is the store I would come to ship. It's like a snowboarder's paradise here. The store is also open 7 days a week, and there were a handful of associates ready to assist me when I showed up. I wish they had a store like this in Fact but luckily this store is located pretty conveniently in Falls Church. I am sure I will come back again before the summer is out.

My mom went to the podiatrist because she had fracture in her foot and the podiatrist told her to go to the running store because he wrote what she needed on a prescription paper. So today I took her to The Running Store in Gainesville, VA. The employee there that helped us was Brenden. when I walk into stores I pretty much observe the atmosphere and workers. The workers there were helpful but somehow my focus was on Brenden before I ever knew his name. I noticed how He was very knowledge with the customer he was helping before he helped my mom. My mom showed him the piece of paper that her podiatrist had written on to show what issues she had with her foot. Brenden had her stand on a machine that analyzed both her right foot and her left foot. He explained to my mom that it would help in the type of shoe that would work best for her. My mom had mentioned how she volunteers at the hospital and that part of her uniform was that she had to wear a black shoe and she was saying how hard it was to find one that she really liked because she wanted a good walking shoe because she works at the information desk and is always walking. He brought out 4 pairs of shoes (NB, Saucony, Altra, and Hoka) to start out with. One of the pairs was a black tennis shoe and I saw how she lit up because it was black. He mentioned there were more he could choose from but these were his top picks starting out. My mom tried on all 4 pairs and afterwards he asked her what where her top 2 choices. Of course she picked 2 (one being the black NB shoe and the other being the Altra) and me knowing how my mom is I know she was trying to figure out which to buy so I told her I would buy both of them. I really appreciated the time that Brenden took to explain everything to my mom and how kind he was. It had been years since my mom and I had been to The Running Store but I'm glad we were still able to have a good experience. I also signed up for the membership with the store and I told Brenden I would be back to get some walking shoes because my mom and I walk everyday except Tuesday (when she volunteers at the hospital) and Sunday which is our day off. I asked Brenden when he works and he told me he's there pretty much all the time. I told him when I come back I'm going to make sure he's there for when I look for a walking shoe for myself. So if anyone needs a walking and/or running shoe ask for Brenden because he's nice and knowledgeable. read more

This is my 3rd pair of Hoka's in the last 3 months and could not be happier. I can finally move around comfortably again. The great customer service and knowledge Ian and the staff have is tremendous. I had 5 foot operations on the right MJP. This included 2 FAILED operations; one for a hemi implant and the other for a fusion. It was not until I went to Dr. Mark Myerson, the Director at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, that my life turned around. I was walking with screws coming out of my feet. He is world renowned. The 2nd operation he performed added BMP (bone morphogenic protein) which were put on sponges and integrated back into me. Finally after 7 months of not walking, I am very mobile again. And then couple the factor of adding the Hoka's I am moving sooo much better. I cannot believe it. The Hoka's have stabilized my gait for sure. I will be buying a 4th pair in the near future. My story started in the 70s when everything was about training to failure. No pain no gain was the mantra. I was a TYPE AAApersonality. I became a very good amateur boxer in Paterson, NJ I ran up to 10 miles training for a fight-in Army boots-Needless to say between that, jumping rope and putting pressure on the forefoot caused serious harm. I have had 6 total ops on my feet. I then was a federal law enforcement officer and doing some crazy stuff in Law Enforcement for more than 25 years later certainly did not help matters. I could not walk from Jan 2014 until mid August 2014. I have a pair of Bondi, Stinson and Conquest and use them interchangeably. In response to Chasity below on 11/6/16... I've known "Guy" for quite some time and never once has he come across as smug or arrogant. In fact, he's gone above and beyond in supporting me on countless occasions. I've witnessed his interaction with other customers as well as his staff and never did they come across in a negative way towards anyone. For instance, not too long ago I went in to the store 15 minutes before closing looking to buy a new pair of shoes. I had a ton of questions which kept him 30 minutes past closing. Not once was he interested in closing the shop and getting me out the door. He wanted to make sure I had the right shoe and was happy with my purchase. I totally get you can find cheaper prices online Don't you feel bad for "using" a local business (not a big chain store) as your personal show room for Footwear online? I find paying a bit more helps the "small guy" and keeps local businesses around which is VERY hard in this day and age of extremely high rents/leases charged by commercial real estate landlords. What I get back in one-on-one attention, tips, tricks, insight, advice and free group workouts is invaluable that youd don'g get from online vendors and worth the slightly higher price on some items. Perhaps you mistook "Guy's attempt at humor as arrogant or smug? I urge you to give "Guy" another chance. Maybe the stars were aligned and everyone involved was having a bad day? read more

I just started getting back into running after getting into a rut over the pandemic. My old running shoes are about 4-5 years old and show it. First couple of times out I had severe pain in my feet and ankles with no support in my shoes. I had heard about The Running Store from local friends and was interested in going somewhere to get a better fit to make training just slightly less grueling. I wasn't disappointed, Brenden greeted me the moment I walked through the door and took me through the fitting process. He corrected several misconceptions I had about my fit and helped me realize I was probably wearing the wrong size and style. After the fit he brought out several varieties of shoes for me to try and through a process similar to an optometrist checking for glasses (good, better, worse) we found the shoes for me along with some insoles that were a game changer. The whole process only took about 30 minutes. I was out the door with my right fitting shoes much faster than I expected. Took them for their first run the evening, just a short one to start breaking them in. I wasn't disappointed. The pricing is slightly higher at the store, but you're paying for the service and supporting local. I'll be back again later this summer when I need to get some trail running shoes. When the running shoes I had purchased a couple weeks earlier were not quite right, I went back to the store and met Chris, one of the staff members, and Ian, the owner. Chris made it his mission to find the perfect running shoe for me. I tried on several pairs of shoes and he watched me run outside with them to see what could be causing my ankle pain. He looked like he had been running for years and also gave me tips on running form and treating my sore ankles and calves. He was extremely knowledgeable and I feel like I got the best running shoe for me. Ian, the owner, was great about exchanging my shoes, even though I was a few days past the 15 day return policy. He truly just wanted to make sure I was 100% satisfied with my purchase. I even ended up with a store credit since my new shoes ended up being $50 cheaper than the original ones I had purchased. If you're new to running like me, don't be afraid to go in and get fitted for a new pair of shoes. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and they have fantastic customer service! So while you could shop on Amazon (and I do for many things), it's worth it to make the trip to The Running Store--you're getting a custom shoe fitting, and supporting a local business. Love, love, love, The Running Store. Customer service there is phenomenal. I found their staff to be knowledgeable, very friendly, and very passionate about running. It is the best place to go to especially if you're a new runner. When I started running back in 2009, The Running Store helped me select my first pair of running shoes. They analyzed my gait while running on a treadmill and answered all my newbie questions. I never once felt rushed in this store and never had to wait too long for someone to help me either. More experienced runners will find that The Running Store carry a variety of gels, chews, and other running related gear. If the store doesn't have an item you're looking for, they can usually order that item for you. They also offer discounts throughout the year and host events that give you a sneak peek/up close look at the latest running gear. In addition, I love and appreciate the running community that The Running Store has helped build in this area. They offer Saturday morning groups runs through the battlefields of Manassas, track workouts in the spring/summer/fall and fall/spring training groups. Great way to meet other runners in the area! I highly recommend this store for all runners and walkers too! read more

If you're hesitant about going in because you're not a runner or not in shape, don't worry about it one bit. They are very welcoming to all and non-judgmental. I went in the middle of the day on a Tuesday and they were surprisingly quite busy, but Lisa spotted me waiting and assured me she'd get to me next. I was in the market for new sneakers and had tried on dozens that weren't quite right. After discussing what I was looking for and the issues I was having with my current shoes, Lisa brought out a few pairs for me to try and I quickly found a pair that was better than all the others I had tried, but she was happy to let me try on more to be sure. When I was a little hesitant, she scanned my feet and suggested cushioned insoles and they mad a huge difference. Lisa really took the time to listen and was very patient with me. I also really liked that she never gave me a hard sell or was pushy. After walking around in my new shoes and insoles for a week, I don't want to buy shoes from anywhere else! They also have a very generous return/exchange policy, especially if you sign up for the pro deal, which makes me feel really good about the money I spent here. read more

I wasn't really paying attention to how my old shoes were wearing, but after I started with both hip and foot pain I decided to wake up and take a look at them. Sure enough they were collapsing on the outer edges. I decided not to do the usual and go to a store just to buy a new pair, but instead I wanted to go where I could actually have my foot and stance evaluated and be properly fitted to my personal requirements. Drew was terrific. My feet and stance were evaluated and it was determined that I definitely have moderate supination. It was also determined that one arch is slightly higher than the other... though that does not appear to be affecting my walking/running. He pulled 2 pairs of shoes for me to try, saying that with supination more cushioning support is needed. Those 2 were the only ones I needed to try. I'm in heaven in the pair I brought home with me -- one of the New Balance Fresh Foam series. Walking/running never felt so good -- great cushioning and great support! My guess is that the pain in my hip and foot will recede... it doesn't happen over night, but I do believe I'm well on my way with getting properly fitted footwear. Thanks, Drew! read more

I am an older walker, former runner with bad knees. I wanted to see what Hoka products the store had and also what my shoe size was. I haven't been measured in over 20 years so thought I'd check this out.. I was met by Alisa who was perhaps the most helpful shoe sales person I've ever met.. Used one of those metal things on the floor and said I was between regular and wide and a 10.5----up from my current size 10. No wonder they feel a bit tight.. But then she took me to some space age gadget that gives 3-D stuff on your foot and measures from every angle imaginable.. Really high tech or at least appears so.. It also showed me a 10.5, high arch and almost wide.. Hmmm seems Ms. Alisa knows her stuff.. Anyway, they did not have the Hoka I was interested in (not a big deal as it is currently unavailable from Hoka or anywhere else, probably sitting out in the pacific in one of those ships that can't find a parking place ).. Alisa showed me several Altra possibilities and after trying them I picked a pair and they are as comfortable as any of the Hoka's I own.. Of course they are also the correct size, and we all know size matters.. read more

Good evening. I'm writing about the amazing experience I had at The Running Store at Gainesville VA with Kate. I came in looking for help with finding a good running shoe for me and my partner. Kate came and assisted us by having us step on a machine that analyzed our feety feets and showed us the best shoes that would give us maximum support during a good run. We even ran on the in store treadmill to make sure the shoe performed well. The in soles Kate recommended took the shoe comfort and support to a new level. She also showed us the socks that were on sale for a buy 3 get 1 pair free of charge that the store had. Since we both wanted socks the sale was perfect! I was able to get 2 pairs and my partner got 2 pairs so thank you for that lol We also was informed of a sale percentage on apparel so we both took advantage of that as well. With Kate's assistance in the whole experience we both feel so very confident in running now as well as excited. Thank you for being patient and informative during the entire experience. Today was my first day going to The Running Store. I have never thought of myself as a runner up until the pandemic hit. It was brought to my attention I should invest in a good high quality running shoe. By default I shop at big stores like Dicks Sporting Goods, Amazon, Target, etc. I am glad I listened to my gut and went to The Running Store. Little did I know I have been wearing the wrong size running shoe. Wow! No wonder I am uncomfortable after a run. Jake H. helped me and was patient. During our time together I had mentioned I was a teacher. When it came to check out he remembered (that is bonus points because I now know he was really listening to me and my needs) and told me about the Pro Deal discount. It was a no brainer to sign up for it. I am 100% satisfied and will most definitely return. As I am getting older, I realize the importance and value of shopping local. Don't live close to store, but had a gift card I thought I could redeem there so we headed out. Staff did an AWESOME job fitting my son for his first outing doing cross country. They took his 'foot' needs in to account as well as his concern for 14 year old boy fashion. :) while there, we checked on my daughter's running shoes and fitted her with what I thought my gift card would work for. Ian chatted with me a ton about the nutrition selection and I stocked up on that for my husband. Turns out my gift card was only good online ( from vendor) but Ian gave me a deal on the shoes in store! We have been a customer of PRR for years, but I was really pleased with service and staff and overall vibe of The Running Store. Happy to drive a little out of my way to support a business that is there is serve. And no snooty elite runner vibe there... I've been a regular customer for about five years and have always had good experiences shopping here. Recently I bought a pair of running shoes. I got serious ankle pain when I ran in them that didn't subside after three uses. I needed to replace them. The short story is: I hadn't followed their reasonable rules for returning merchandise. Their rules are: they will take returns no questions asked if you bring the shoes back in the box within two weeks. I had been hasty and thrown the box out as soon as I bought them, and waited more than two weeks to return them. The lesson here kids is The Running Store didn't have to work with me on this, but they did. I would have understood if they charged a return fee or didn't accept the shoes at all, but they exchanged them. I do suggest keeping the box and returning new shoes that don't work out within two weeks. You can buy shoes at the Running Store in Gainesville with confidence, knowing they will work with you after the sale. read more

I wanted to get new walking shoes. I had purchased walking sneaker before many times. They seem good at first but after a few hours my feet would really hurt. I went to the running store. I was immediately greeted by sales associate Sam R. He asked me many questions and listened to my answers. He measured and scanned my feet, It turns out even though my feet had been measured at other stores, I have been buying the wrong size shoes. He came back with three different shoe choices. I tried on and walked in each one. I picked the one that felt the most comfortable walking in. Then from the foot scan he knew where the pressure points were. He picked three inserts. I once again tried each one. I picked the one the worked best for me. It was actually the insert recommended by the scanner. It was the best experience I have had buying shoes. The Running Store is my new go to running store! It's 40 minutes from my house, but I'm happy to drive past Potomac River Running and Pacers to get there. Here's why--I just moved to the area from Salt Lake City where I had a running store that I really trusted. That's an important factor for me because when I'm training for a marathon and I experience something new (like an injury or nutrition issues or you name it)--I need to be able to walk into my running store and get sound advice. Yeah, the other stores I tried in the area were full of advice...but it was obvious they weren't listening to me, they just wanted to make sure I knew how smart they were and it came off condescending. Not at The Running Store. I shared my issue (my running shoes were not giving me the support I needed) and they worked with me to find a solution. I should add that it was on a Saturday afternoon and the store was packed, but I still got their full attention. I'll be back for sure! read more

Good afternoon! I wanted to let you know about my experience at your store today. I arrived and was greeted by a friendly staff, who were all ready to assist. The associate who assisted me was Alisa. I appreciate the knowledge that she shared with me about the shoe wear, of my previous pairs of running shoes. Alisa selected several different brands of shoes according to my needs, as well as what I desired. She brought out a shoe that was on sale and several shoes which were regularly priced. Ultimately, I chose a shoe that regularly priced, for it was the perfect need for my needs, and it was also the correct size and width. I am posting my review on Facebook and Google, I will try Yelp as well. I felt that contacting you was the most important order of proceeding. From my first visit to The Running Store in Gainesville, VA, in 2008, the professionalism and courtesy of the staff has impressed me. The store manager (owner?), Ian Connor has provided exceptional guidance to me, for my children's shoe selections, for my shoe selections, and for my preparations for the Tough Mudder and for the Marine Corps Marathon. Beyond the expertise Ian and his staff demonstrate, in terms of running, training, shoe fitment, and correct shoe selection, the unique and extremely impressive value I find at the Running Store is the investment Ian and his team make in each of us. Every year since 2008, I have purchased at least two pairs of shoes for each of my children, gift cards for teachers, shirts, shorts, Garmin watches, sunglasses, and at least one pair of shoes per year for me, all from this Running Store. I could not have completed the Marine Corps Marathon so confidently without the insight and guidance I received from here. read more

I have been buying my running shoes at The Running Store in Gainesville for years. Honestly, since I started shopping there, I've never bought a pair of running shoes anywhere else! Ian and his staff always take time with every customer to make sure you are fitted into the best shoe for your foot. I have never been disappointed! My 12-year-old is now becoming a pretty avid runner and took her there a couple days ago and they fitted her with a shoe that she is absolutely loving! The store is still open during this time of social distancing offering curbside pickup, delivery and in-store shopping as well (I was worried about buying a kid a new running shoe without her having the opportunity to try it on, but we were still able to go inside the store, maintain appropriate social distancing, and get her fitted into the best shoe!). August, 2021 (Gainesville, VA store) As a runner in desperate need of good shoes, I decided to drive 40 miles to The Running Store to look through their selection. Brenden greeted me when I entered the store, asking if I needed assistance. He inquired about my running habits and the shoes I usually wear. Brenden explained to me the store's new technology for gait analysis and how it would help me find the best shoes. I highly recommend this technology if you haven't already used it! It is amazing! A 3D analyzer of your gait is offered, and with this analysis, it determines the best shoe for you. After the analysis, Brenden brought me a pair of running shoes and answered my questions about his running and shoe preferences. Thanks to Brendan's friendliness, patience, knowledge, and running experience, I had an amazing shopping experience. I have been experiencing severe foot pain for a couple of weeks. I did some quick research on the internet and learned about Superfeet insoles. I then discovered that The Running Store carried them locally. I decided to take a quick trip to the store and am very happy that I did. I was approached by an employee asking if he could help. I explained the symptoms that I was having and he said it sounded like Plantar Fasciitis. I told him that I had read about the Superfeet insoles and he quickly helped me with choosing the pair that was right for me. After that, he offered to help my wife and she went through a shoe fitting (most thorough I have ever experienced) and it was decided that the insoles would work for her too. After seeing how knowledgeable and attentive the staff is, my wife and I will definitely return. I would recommend that anyone needing a running or walking (athletic) shoe go to them. read more

My PT therapist mentioned Montague & Son The Birkenstock Store located in Herndon and yesterday I finally dropped by. Located close to Lotte Plaza and Fair Oaks Hospital, it's a small store but packed with Birkenstock sandals and other ancillaries . I was met entering by a young lady (Ceres?)who took her time to help me decide which sandals would fit and what colors were available (none of mine were so went with second best). She was very thorough, up to the point where another young lady who was obviously a close friend stopped by and then I had her divided attention to check-out. I have my sandals and tried them as directed for an hour first day and the tried the second day. It hurt in the top of my foot and I had to read the reviews to find out why it was hurting. Would have been nice to have been told that by my associate. Not cheap so pay attention in the store. I overheard another associate going deeper into the physical aspects of the sandals so try and see if you can enter, walk around and listen in to conversations to see which associate seem to be most knowledgeable. Hopefully the sandals will break in shortly and I can experience the benefit.

While we were waiting there were two people in front of us using the machine on their own. There was no one from the store helping them. I assumed I could do the same(use the machine). I even asked the people if they were done. When I was asking my husband to take his shoes off a person on my back told me "NO, YOU DO NOT DO THAT" I turned around and told him there was nobody there and the other people were using it. He told me with a hash tone I HAVE TO HELP YOU. I literally thought he was going to tell me to help me understand the results of the machine. The only thing he did was press start and he LEFT. HE LEFT without an explanation or NOTHING. I felt like a person being joked by a selfish guy. NO One in the store said anything. We turned around and left. I took a picture of the people that were at the store and only white people were being helped . I'm sorry but I have to say it, there are stores that are very racist and this is one of them. Customer service is the worst :(

My experience there had been relatively positive over the past 7-8 years, but at this point I wouldn't trust them even with a basic service. I initially had a minor back-and-forth with their staff regarding incorrect charges on my receipt. While they did eventually issue a refund, I had to return shortly after for a follow-up service because the tubeless setup wasn't done correctly the first time. To make matters worse, I am reasonably certain my bike was intentionally damaged while in their care during that second visit, likely by a staff member in retaliation. Unsurprisingly, the owner has denied any wrongdoing and refused to accept any responsibility or accountability for the damage. I have been going to Haymarket Bicycles purely for convenience as they are located right down the street from me, but proximity is no longer a factor. For riders looking for trustworthy alternatives, I highly recommend Danny at Bull Run Bicycles or Chris at Blue Ridge Cyclery, both of whom have provided excellent, reliable service in the past.
