I'm absolutely blown away. I was surprised about how good everything was. Might have been the best food I've had this year. My family ordered 1 appetizer, 4 entrees, and 2 drinks, all shared, and all 4 of us agreed that EVERY single item was phenomenal. That has absolutely NEVER happened before. At most restaurants, there's always at least one thing that someone doesn't like, and often multiple things that multiple people don't like. Not the case here. The appetizer was the spicy basil wings. Very good to start. But little did I know what was coming my way. The drinks were Thai tea and lychee limeade. The Thai tea was normal. As in good, I liked it. The lychee limeade was amazing, had to order another one. I would like to try the mango next time (there will definitely be a next time). Very sour, which I love. I hate lemonade that's not sour enough. Oh and that too, I usually hate limeade, don't really care for lemonade, and don't drink soda. I usually only drink water, juice, or tea (no coffee, alcohol rarely). So that's saying something. The Laos fried spring roll entree was really good. I always liked fried rolls but something about this tasted better. They were Laotian rolls, so maybe that was part of the difference from the ones you get from Pho restaurants. The duck over rice was amazing. I'm not usually one to pick duck, I don't mind it but I usually don't order it, but this was my mom's choice and it was really good. I like the sauce too. The Panang duck curry was so good. My mom doesn't even like curry and she liked it. And the Chiang Mai soup dish, I've never had anything like it. It was still hot after, I don't know, 20 minutes maybe? At the bottom especially. We all ate this together at the end, while the other dishes were in the order I listed them for myself (mostly, kinda switched around a bit eating family style), and generally the same for everyone else. I tasted a tiny bit of the soup in the beginning and thought it was nothing special, like when my spoon was clean it was the first thing I scooped. Only the soup though, none of the stuff inside. Honestly I didn't read what was in it, some crispy noodle or something. I was not sure if I would like it but my sister said she had it in Thailand and liked it so if I didn't like it she could eat it. That ended up not being a problem. Okay so anyway, we started on the soup at the end. To start, it was pretty good. Somehow, every bite we took tasted better and better, for at least like 5-10 bites maybe. At that point, I was thinking it's the best thing I've ever tasted. (But of course that's probably not actually true, and I'm just falling for the recency bias, kind of like how my favorite song changes all the time.) Never had anything like it. I've been missing out. But wow, I have to come back. And I highly recommend this place. Life changing experience honestly. Like if you asked me right now if I wanted to get Japanese or Korean (my other favorites) food or this, I would go here. I honestly wanted more of every single dish, especially the fried spring rolls, duck over rice, duck curry, and soup. Wait a second... that's all the entrees we ordered! Also the limeade. I need to get that again. But I also want to try other stuff next time so I'm torn. I literally need all 4 of these dishes again so I don't know what to do. I hope these dishes aren't seasonal or otherwise temporary. I noticed the menu had a month and year listed (I think it said April 2026 and it's May 3 2026 today) so I believe they update it frequently. If I lived closer I would come 20 times in a row and try every single thing, but unfortunately I live in San Ramon so it's not like I'm trying to go to Oakland every day. Soon though. My sister lives there, if I were her I would go here every day until I was sick of it, if that could ever be possible. I don't know if I could ever enjoy other food this much again. I was also completely sober so it wasn't like I had munchies or anything (felt I should specify being a young adult who grew up in California). Hmm, that gives me an idea for the future though. Even the pricing is fair (no dishes over $30), and the place is nice. Great service too. The only drawbacks are small tables for parties over 4 people, and it's REALLY loud in the restaurant, but well worth it. If you are sensitive to noise I'd recommend earplugs, earmuffs, earbuds, headphones, or something. The place is also relatively small. I'd recommend making a reservation if you plan to go on a Friday or Saturday night. It got busy, very busy. Well our reservation was at 6 and it wasn't crowded yet, a couple tables open, but by the time our food came out the place was absolutely packed and I think people without reservations had to wait to sit. I'm not sure though, I was too focused on the amazing food to care. Anyway, once again, highly recommend and I will be back. read more

Came here on a Sunday night with my family, and we might have a competitor for our favorite Laos place. We got the following : Lao Appetizers Plate - Everything had great texture with the sausage standing out the most to me. Very soft and not too salty. Garlic Pork Spare Ribs - Great flavor, but a little on the dry side. Still tender enough to enjoy. Duck Larb Salad - Bright flavors and everything worked really well together. Recommend adding this to any meal balance out the other fried items. Kao Piak - I find that most places over cook their chickens, but the meats here were cooked perfectly. Broth was a bit salty for me, and I usually like the broth thicker, but still good overall. Mango Sticky Rice - I liked the crispy fried rice bits that added a nice crunch. Mango wasn't quite in season right now, but it was still sweet and soft enough. Overall service was great, and there is a lot of parking in the area. Def recommend checking it out. read more

Not bad, but probably not somewhere I would return to. I think the cocktails and appetizers are where they shine, so I would recommend coming for happy hour rather than a full dinner. Bar staff were very nice. Cocktail menu is SF pricing ($17-18/drink) but they have some fun options. Food is unique and mostly tasty. Enjoyed the spareribs (especially the sauce- I ended up putting it on everything!) and chive cakes were nice. Curry puffs were pretty disappointing. 80% pastry and very little flavor. Papaya salad - big portion, very flavorful and fishy, borderline salty. Don't get this if you don't LOVE fermented shrimp/seafood paste Steamed catfish - loved how unique this dish is, the steamed contents were so flavorful, however this dish took a full 45 minutes to come out. My family came here for my brothers birthday on a Monday evening and were able to be seated early for our reservation! Parking can be slightly difficult since it is just street parking. The service is great and they checked up on us frequently and made great recs! We have never had Laos food so this is a great introduction. We ordered the Laos appetizer platter and loved it! The salmon curry was slightly dry but still really tasty. They did warn us that the papaya salad tastes different than Thai style, and I'm glad to have tried it! I came here at the last hour and they were not letting people dine in - just take out, which is completely understandable. BUUUT if only I was able to come in earlier and dine in because the interior was pleasant and the staff were friendly, and of course the food was fantastic! I ordered the Lao appetizer platter and it was sooooo good. The rice? Flavorful. Texture-heavy. Delicious. The Lao Sausages? EVEN BETTER. I enjoyed my experience here even if I was eating my meal inside my car. We stopped here on a whim as we were looking for something new after a workout class. Walking in there were plenty of tables open. This place has an enormous bar area as well. It must have been a sports bar in its former life. We ordered the Roti to start and my wife ordered the spring rolls with shrimp. I went with the roast duck over rice. The Roti was fine... it seemed like they put their roti in a panini press and just served it like that, so not a lot of flavor. The Thai restaurant down the street (infinity) has a much better roti. The curry dipping sauce was really good though. My wife said the spring rolls were "fine". I really enjoyed my duck over rice dish though. The duck was moist and full of flavor and the hot soy sauce had a nice kick to it. Service seemed a bit off, slow to get water for us and hot sauce, but everyone was nice. I'd come back for the duck rice, but I don't know if this place would get elevated to a "must return". read more

I had never had Laotian food before, and this was a great first experience! The appetizer plate was more than enough for two if you're not ravenous. If you are ravenous, you may find that you won't manage to finish your second dish anyways. We ordered the crispy duck curry as a second dish, and while the curry sauce was really good, we weren't a fan of the duck deep-fried. You couldn't really taste the duck, and it was on the chewier side. I ended up spooning the curry sauce over the rice and I was satisfied. If you are getting a curry to share, I would recommend getting two rices (it comes with only 1) otherwise it won't be enough. If I'm in the mood for more Laotian food, I will be back and try from their plentiful vegetarian options! read more

I had plans here for dinner with some friends and it was our first time all hanging out. I got here before everyone else. I was coming from work so I took Bart to Rockridge and walked to Piedmont Avenue. Yes it was a 30 minute walk and by the time I arrived, I was low key sweaty, but I got my steps in! I realized when I got there that the girls had made reservations for 6 PM so I had an hour to chill which was cool because I like absorbing my surroundings beforehand anyway. I decided since I had an hour, that I could chill with a drink so I chose the Hella Daisy, which was vodka, pineapple and something- hella refreshing and yummy that I ended up having two drinks before the girls arrived. My server, San, was super friendly and warm and listened to my sob story about walking from Rockridge to Piedmont. As a group we ordered the appetizer platter, fried chicken wings, the basil chicken wings, the catfish boiled in leaves, the short ribs ,The salmon in curry. We were all in heaven, passing plates around, sharing food, it was beautiful! My favorite and most memorable dish was appetizer platter because I enjoyed eating the lettuce wraps with sticky rice, fried spring rolls and fried rice salad with a sprig of mint! Also the fried short ribs were the best in my opinion because it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and with the vinegar dip it was delectable! A week ago, I got to check out this really great Laotian restaurant/bar conveniently located on Piedmont Ave in Oakland. I overheard a colleague mention that they were a mixologist here and after a mutually rough day at work- another colleague and I decided to check it out for happy hour. Did I mention Happy Hour is everyday from 5-8 pm (only at the bar) with it's own bar menu alongside the restaurant menu? We were pleasantly surprised as we walked in- first off, we were able to find parking across the street on a busy Friday night so it made me feel safe to be able to see my car. The place seats about 50 people (both bar and restaurant). Lots of open windows- as you walk in you wait to be seated. We were delighted to see how many people were coming in and out- seemed like a lot of regulars including family, couples and friends. We even sat next to two friends who frequent here regularly and offered up some good food suggestions. We sat at the bar and chose the following from the bar menu: CRISPY VEGETARIAN EGG ROLLS- 5/5 The egg rolls were just as described- nice and crispy on the outside filled to the brim with fresh to order veggies and a sweet dipping sauce. This was our favorite dish. GARLIC PORK RIBS My friend ordered these as I'm pescatarian- she loved them and ate them all! CHIVE CAKE- Vegetarian 3/5 Personally not my favorite- I think it was a texture thing... a little gummy for me on the chew and filled only with chive. I would order the shrimp dish next time. THE COCKTAILS See Daniel at the bar- he is passionate and so knowledgeable about spirits and mixing cocktails. I had the Miss Lemongrass as I asked for something light and my friend had the Kissing Lychee which was tasty (I had a sip). We even asked Daniel to make up a drink on the spot and he didn't disappoint. COST- Pricing is very reasonable for the Happy Hour food menu- cocktails run about $14 so it can add up pretty quickly if you're ordering a few. OVERALL AMBIENCE/EXPERIENCE The decor was really funky and aesthetically pleasing- I took lots of photos and videos. I will definitely come back to try the regular menu with my Mom. This place is pretty good overall. We ordered the papaya salad, crispy rice salad and the amok. Out of the 3, the amok fish was the one that shook out; very flavorful. I found myself scarfing up the entire thing by the end of the meal. The spices on the dishes were watered down, where I almost asked for more peppers. Perhaps they make the meals more mild to conform to a more western taste but I couldnt help but feel the lack of spice on the papaya salad and crispy rice was the missing, critical element. Service was good; the bartender was kind enough to check on us a few times. The main server was kind but felt she was rushing her work slightly? In her defense, we did show up around 8pm on a Sunday so I think we showed up a little late and they were prepping to close. Overall, it's a good, but not great, place. I stopped by with my wife for date night on a Friday afternoon with a reservation at 7:00 p.m. and we were promptly seated at a table. The atmosphere is energetic ± with EDM music blasting over the speakers, and the decor is eclectic and fun. My wife got a rum based coconut cocktail while I got a bourbon, aperol, and mango cocktail. We both thoroughly enjoyed our drinks and loved that the fruit flavors weren't too sweet or overpowering. For our food, we got three items: the appetizer platter, the chicken wings with their house sauce and sticky rice, and lastly, their steamed fish in banana leaves and sticky rice. For two people, this ended up being way too much food. When the fish arrived, I could only take one bite because I was so full. The food itself was fantastic, especially the crispy rice salad that came with the appetizer platter. A spoonful of rice into a lettuce wrap with a small touch of their house sauce makes for the perfect, balanced bite. Another item I especially loved from the appetizer plate was the Laotian sausage, which is bursting full of flavor. The only item I would skip on would probably be the chicken wings, as they were not particularly special, as our other dishes came with sticky rice and their house sauce as well. Sometimes you gotta pop out and taste some new food. We ventured into Oakland for Happy Hour, and we found The Saap Avenue on Piedmont. What I really liked and appreciated was that their Happy Hour is Daily 5pm to 8pm (Most places I have seen HH start at 3pm and end at 6pm). The deals are great on the happy hour menu. All apps are $8 and drinks range from $6 to $14 (signature cocktails). The two drinks we got were the Saap Tea, which is like a thai tea with alcohol in it. Highly recommend this one. The Miss Lemongrass is a tasted more like a mojito. I wish I got more of the lemongrass flavor. It was still perfect for a hot summer day. All the apps were great. The Curry puff was our favorite of the bunch. The vegetarian is filled with potatoes and can fill you up easily. The spare ribs were on the pungent and salty side, so a heads up for you on that. Roti with the curry is a classic dish and can never go wrong with that order. The Chive pastry was great as well. The texture of the pastry is flaky ans crunchy. The best dish of the night was the Ka Poon. It is gluten free. There's a lot in this dish to love, but the best part was the broth. I will definitely order this again the next time I come back. I've been meaning to write a review of this place, as today's early dinner was my second time at this restaurant. It's a very cute restaurant on the corner at Piedmont Avenue, and I think staff was attentive and service was great. Unfortunately, I just don't think the food was well prepared. I ordered the Pumpkin Curry with Beef, and the curry tasted fine, but the beef was not edible. I recommend either the tiger prawns or chicken. I could not even chew a piece of the beef. This is my favorite Laotian restaurant in the Bay Area! Not only for its authentic flavors in all the dishes, but they have a really good selection at the bar. Staff is always super friendly and welcoming, you will never walk out of this place hungry, thirsty or angry. The food here is delicious with incredible flavors and beautiful presentation. And the cocktails here are really special. The Manhattan had very unique flavors and was a piece of art. Very high alcohol content, served with extra on the side. We got the Lao Appetizer Platter which was perfect for making lettuce wraps. This was huge and could be a meal for 2 people. The pumpkin curry with tofu had a wonderful flavor, served with rice was a huge portion. The Tom Yum Noodle Soup was spicy and flavorful. The Panang crispy duck curry was something special as well. Service was great. Prices are on par with quality and portions are large. We made reservations for 7pm on a Saturday but it wasn't too crowded. My girl found this spot to try for our GNO and I'm so glad we got to try this place! Everything was flavorful and delish. We ordered the following: Lao Appetizer Platter - a must! I love how you get a little bit of everything (fried spring rolls, Lao sausages, kao nam tod) Spicy Basil Wings - this was delish, the sauce was very tasty and goes well with basil mixed in Som Tum Lao (Lao Style Papaya Salad) - we did a level 3 but beware this may be a bit spicy to others. It had a good kick but the spice lingers in your mouth! Ho Mok Pla (Steamed Catfish) - I was expecting this to be more but it lacked in flavor for me Panang Crispy Duck Curry - this was my favorite out of everything we ordered. The duck was nice and crispy and the curry so flavorful. This helped me when my mouth was on fire from the papaya salad Overall, the food was great. While Thai food is usually on the sweeter side, it appeared this establishment adds even more sugar. That was the only negative for us. My favorite was their chicken egg rolls. This place is so great. I'm mad that I only found out about them recently even though they are walking distance to my house! The Chiang Mai is everything! I got it for take out dinner, had left overs for lunch (it's a huge serving). Then went back the next day to get the Ka Poon lol. Also excellent. We decided to go in anyways. They were busy-ish, but 5 tables were open. After 10 mins of waiting at the door they said it would be almost an hour wait, or we could sit at the bar once seats open up. We waited 5 minutes and they politely asked a couple to slide down one seat so we could sit at the bar. They obliged and we got seated. The bartender was quick to help and pointed out that happy hour was still going on and his favorites. We got beer and a cocktails and a few items off the happy hour menu. Everything was terrific. The cocktails were perfectly crafted and the appetizers came out hot and delicious. Couple more cocktails in we ordered some entrees which were also very tasty. The bartender kept us entertained making cocktails for other guests and telling us how he makes it differently and why. Our experience at this restaurant was really disappointing. Starting off with the drinks, I got the slink cocktail and it tasted like a candle. I was with a group of five and all of us tried it and said the same thing. For food I ordered the chicken wings, the catfish and the appetizer plate. The chicken wings were probably one of the best on the menu, but not much better than air fried wings I make at home myself. The catfish didn't really taste good and I shared it with someone else. They agreed and they didn't even want to finish it/take it to go. When our server came to check on us and ask how everything was I was honest and said the cocktail tasted like a candle, and the catfish we didn't enjoy (to be clear I said this very politely) but she just responded with 'oh' and walked away-- and in fact, she never came back after that. I certainly wasn't expecting a discount or something for free, but I did expect some emotion/sympathy or her even offering if I want to order something else (even if I have to pay for it) since I clearly didn't like what I ordered. We couldn't even ask anyone to refill our water vase so we had to walk over to the bartender to ask him to refill our glasses of water. Given the ambience and the menu prices you'd think the quality of the food and service would be better, but my group was very unimpressed and disappointed. If you're looking for food packed with flavor and good vean options, I highly recommend The Saap Avenue. The tofu fresh rolls with peanut sauce were amazing. I requested the Ka Poon Soup to be made vegan and it was packed with so much flavor and so many veggies. I tried some of the cocktails my friends ordered and they were all delicious - especially the Kissing Lychee and Hella Daisy. The staff were super friendly and the restaurant is cute. I come here just for the mango lime soda. I don't understand how they make such a delicious drink. My girlfriend and I tried to recreate it at home with mango juice and fresh limes and some extremely high quality club soda and we did not even get close to how good the one at Saap Avenue is. HOW DO THEY DO IT?! I could drink them every single day. Sometimes we order their food for delivery and I get the soda and they put the cup in a plastic bag and tie it in case it spills. Of course it always spills and then I open up the bag and pour it into a glass at my house. I don't care- I would drink it out of the bag! I would drink it off the floor! That's how good it is. Even the ice cubes they use are delectable. Toothsome. The food is also excellent. I usually get the vegetarian curry noodle soup. I wish there were more vegetarian options, but the ones they have are great. It's all about that mango lime drink, though. I hope this place never closes because that soda is one of the tent-poles of my mental health. I am not exaggerating at all. read more

Servers were friendly when I picked up a to go order. The appetizer platter was yummy. Every part was pretty good, no complaints about the taste. The sticky rice was very tasty and had a good aftertaste as well. Also had the Pla Sam Ross and the salmon was fried to perfection, the sauce was a bit sweet for my liking but was still good. It came with lots of veggies which was also good. Overall a good experience with food here but it was quite pricey. read more

Ambiance was nice, the food was good and service was great. I'm not sure I would come back but I highly reccomend the passionfruit limeade.

Listen the food is bomb, cocktails are bomb, but they are consistently understaffed. Most recently the bartender and server were amazing. They were hustling, kind, and apologetic for the wait - good at their jobs. They need at least one another floor person to host, bus, run food and drinks, handle to-go orders. Please help your staff and make this a 10/10 dinning experience. Last time I was here the service was the worst I've ever experienced. Every dish came out one at a time, food got cold waiting for everyone at the table to get their order, and they forgot our sides. We weren't ever checked on. Then when the server came with our bill, she tapped the table with the check and did it again when there wasn't a card immediately put down. Like she had the audacity to rush us for a payment when we had spent over 45 minutes waiting on our food. read more

The food itself gets five stars... but there were two issues that brought it down to three. The loud thumping music with deep, deep base really got in the way of conversation. Granted, our table was in the corner underneath their main speaker. I had to ask our servers three times to lower the volume. The second issue was at the end of the meal. We were asked three times by three different people if we wanted dessert. The third person then told us that if we weren't going to have dessert, then we would have to leave because of another reservation coming in.... Now I should make it clear that we had been there for 55 minutes. We were hardly lingering unreasonably. The server being so undiplomatic left a really unpleasant taste in my mouth, if truth be told. They have a limited number of two-top tables, which may be why they're under so much pressure to turn those tables over as quickly as possible. My mouth is watering as I write this review - one of our absolute favorite go to restaurants -- unique flavors and combinations offer an elevated version of Thai/laotian food. My absolute favorite dish is the Kao Nam Tod - which is a crispy rice salad. If you like the crispy rice at the bottom of the pot, this salad is for you...they offer two versions - regular and vegetarian which I appreciate. My husband's favorite is the pumpkin curry - which is savory without being too sweet. Other favorite dishes include the fried salmon, steamed catfish, roti, and any other of their curries. Definitely a go to place for anyone living in Oakland - as well as a place to bring out of town friends (who often want a "return" visit when the come back)! read more
