Our company hosted an event here and I just need to say that our team had a a great experience. It is such a historic beautiful property. It's just sad the population around isn't the best and can be a bit distracting . The stairs are steep and it's a good workout. Street parking is definitely difficult, so my recommendation would be to park at Fifth/Mason Garage. Aside from that, many thanks to the staff there. While the space is beautiful, it is not a good venue for EDM shows. I saw Shiba San here and found the set-up subpar. Firstly, the acoustics suck in the courtyard and the music is way too loud no matter where you are in relation to the stage. This venue is too small to support such large numbers of patrons and it becomes difficult to navigate through the venue when it's busy. Bathroom situation is AWFUL here, you WILL wait in a long line and the doors to the stall in the men's restroom are so low that you can make eye contact with people standing in line while you use the restroom. Stop having edm events here. read more

The people that manage the venue are terrible at communication. I lost a pair of prescription sunglasses at an event at the Mint. I contacted them through multiple methods (phone, multiple email addresses), and they didn't respond to anything. The venue itself is cool. read more

Seriously, whT Can you say about a building survived the earthquake and fires of the early 1900's? It's cracks are beautiful, it's u even floors tell a story and the vintage bathrooms are complete with swinging shutters for doors. The stairs to reach the entrance are no joke. A little steep and like 50 of them, I'm guessing. I loved the venue but there is a large, somewhat aggressive homeless population RIGHT IN FRONT . It's sad way to see such historical beauty and such abandonment of humanity collide. read more

I recently volunteered to help with set-up for a New Year's Eve party and was very impressed with this space. It's MASSIVE and gorgeous -- makes me wonder what the Mint was like when it was active and occupied by civil servants and actually making coins (or even as a museum). The walls are super thick - so having different musical events in separate rooms has less sound bleed-over than you'd expect. The bathrooms, however, could stand improvement. There are two bathrooms - ladies and gents - so the event company had to set up portolets out back which is not ideal for an evening event when one is dressed up and wearing hosiery and heels (probably no big deal for the guys). Parking can be tough - there's the 4th and Mission garage just kitty-corner but it filled up on NYE before 9pm! read more

I went to the SF Old Mint because A. told me about it. It's on 5th Street @ Mission, SF. Go to the Main Entrance on 5th St - up the stairs & wait at the door. Someone will let you in at 12pm on certain dates. It was mentioned in at least 2 food blogs, I will help get the word out. It's open for a few weekends. May 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30, 31. Other days they are Closed. Maybe in the future it will be open more often, not sure. Cost: $10 non-member; $5 if member. CASH ONLY! The exhibit they have now is: "From Earth to 5-Star: The Bay Area's Innovations in Farming & Food". I thought was just just ok. Lots of posters w/ nice photography and lots to read in small print. That's about it. There's a program or two that you can stay for included w/ admission. When I went on Sat 5/15 it was 2pm: Marin French Cheese Company - this cheese company is in Petaluma and makes Brie, Camambert, & other cheese. They gave us lots of samples. I didn't stay for the 4pm: Farmer Jane: Women Changing The Way We Eat. Tours of building: They have 3 different times for tours: 12:30p, 2p, or 3:45p. I went on the 12:30pm tour. Kristin Morris, Associate Curator, was our tour guide. She was Great. Tour was a little over 1hr. The Old Mint was where they made coins, so a factory now empty. Got to see Main floor & Vault. You can see the Vault on your own too, but better on tour. Vault is just vaults - empty!! They used to have tons of silver dollars down there. Room w/ Joshua Hendy machine is neat to see - it's not suppose to be there, will be removed one day. It's the elephant of the Old Mint. Rooms are pretty empty too. Courtyard was ok to see. Not sure if other floors are open for looking around - didn't ask. Wanted to know if the Roof Garden was available to see - didn't ask. Worth going maybe if you're interested. I was here in November of 2014 for the Hendrick's Emporium of the Unusual event. Hendrick's use of the space was great. Each room had its own theme and drink. Very fun. My favorite area was the enclosed courtyard. They had a photo op out there with an old school bicycle, but I could imagine this being a great area to have drinks. After the event we walked into an exhibit room with artifacts and tidbits about the old mint and SF. It was a nice way to wrap up the evening and remind us of the history of the building. I wouldn't mind coming back to visit as the Old Mint building. I do love history. And who doesn't like a place where they use to make money? read more

How can one not miss this grand stone building with its massive columns on the corner of 5th and Mission? This was the Old Mint that served as the San Francisco branch of the US Mint from 1857 to 1937 and was then designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Nicknamed The Granite Lady, it even survived the 1906 earthquake. I've always been curious of the interior of this building and I was excited to finally get to see the inside for a Macallan scotch tasting event. The event was held in various large rooms and culminated in the large exterior courtyard. The event was held in the main level of the Mint and I was not able to see the upper and lower levels of the building, which probably had more details of the history of the structure as a Mint. It's a grand building that's great for special events. Hopefully, I can be back for an event which enables me to see more of this historical structure. read more

(See pics) Review #1348. Was here for a single malt whisky event and it fitted right in the SF Old Mint with its classic and traditional look. So much history about the vault but from the first floor where the event was hosted, there's not too much to see. However, the exposed brick walls and chilled environment made the event much more serious and almost formal. The event had utilized each room as each vintage year tasting, with the hallway filled with different kinds of small bites. In the middle of hallway is where the history is seated. There were some artifacts and pictures with descriptions to pique your interest. Some chairs were also set up for people to enjoy how the vault was the only financial institution that was intact after the 1904 quake. There's a second floor but had not been and it's likely to have a different style and setting. Definitely a venue for both business and fun events that have a progressive or multiple themes for the first floor. read more

This impressive building opened on November 5, 1874. It survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake when everything around it burned or was leveled by the quake. It is currently being restored; the upper floors are not open to the public. When the restoration is complete it will house the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society. For now, it is primarily as an event center. I toured the building when I went to the S.F. History Expo. The interior is impressive: high ceilings, chandeliers with gold inlay, rich woods and connecting rooms. Then there are the vaults with heavy steel doors that at one time held a third of the country's gold reserve. The expo is an annual event and well worth attending. I am always looking for ways to trace family history in San Francisco and I sure was able to find some useful information from some of the 60 or so groups that were at this event There were also several statewide and East Bay organizations at this expo. read more

The SF Mint is a gorgeous historical venue that will blow your mind away. I attended here with my boyfriend for his company holiday party in the winter. Though as what most people can see, this venue is perfect to use for wedding ceremonies as well. In the lobby, you can check in your coats for free. Depending on the event, you will need to be 21 & up due to open bar. Ultimately, the location is perfect for night-time occasions. read more

The Old Mint is completely renovated and worth heading to if you're invited to an event or have a lot of cash to throw a kick ass party or wedding. Ignore the bad posts about rats as this place is COMPLETELY rat-free now. I was there Thursday for a launch party and it's an absolutely beautiful space. It looks like a European museum. The inside was completely gutted and you can tell; it's now pristine. GO! read more

The original San Francisco mint, nicknamed the 'Granite Lady' has been closed to the public for years but for four days this past week it opened its doors to display over a hundred rarely seen rock posters/photographs from the San Francisco music scene of the 60's and 70's. Wolfgang's Vault in conjunction with SFMHS did an extraordinary job displaying the likes of Jimi, Janis and Jerry throughout the main floor of the mint as well as downstairs in the vault area. I was torn between the two types of history presented to me. The granite walls and huge steel vaults where millions of dollars in gold was once kept and the original photgraphs of some of my favorite rock icons. One of the coolest displays was the original backstage door from Winterland,through which every legendary rocker made their way to the stage. It hangs, suspended in the air, in front of one of the vault rooms. A few doors down, the massive gold refining machine the mint used in its heyday still stands. Quite a contrast thinking of all those ingots of gold and coins sitting in the vaults and the priceless rock art displays covering the granite walls. The mint is set to open sometime in 2012 as a museum but if, by chance, they house another art show there, please do go. It's worth the jaunt downtown! read more

I just love historical buildings in San Francisco. I walk past the Old Mint on a daily basis and today had the opportunity to ascend the steep concrete steps and step back in time. The SF Historical Society is now in charge of this amazing structure. Today they have an exhibit of "the sweeping history of Rock N Roll in San Francisco". The exhibit is a bit to be desired and they could have done so much more with it. I paid $10 to go and check it out but I was really paying the $10 as a donation so I could enter this grand magnificant building. Hung on the walls throughout the many rooms were replicas of old concert posters and some original photographs. Each room was dedicated to an artist. However, the exhibit was overshaddowed by the rooms themselves. You couldn't help but walk into a room and imagine what was happening back when the mint was operational. One of the best rooms was the counting room. This was the most ornate room where I presume they would count all of the gold pieces coming into the mint invetory. Lining the top of the room is a railing with a catwalk all around. This was the place where the guards and guns stood to be sure everything was safe. Another cool space was the big vaults in the basement. It was a catacomes of sort with arched brick hallways and big vaulted doors. Inside the vaults they were completely lined with metal to protect the contents. Throughout the vaults there were some historical pictures explaining what went on in the space. The place is magnificant and I for one am happy they are continuing the renovation of the place. It certainly would be a perfect space for a rave or some elegant party. Had a chance finally to tour the inside today since there was an expo with free admission to the public. Everything is still to the period. We had free rein to the place, so we naturally took advantage of it and roamed throughout each room. Loved the huge wooden doors, the bannisters and light fixtures. We were impressed with the basement. Antique brick walls, and what appeared to be been the vaults. Got to see the device used to crush the rocks that held gold sentiment. When and if they achieve the objective of raising enough funds to restore the Old Mint to its former glory, it'll be even more of a gem for the City. They only need $80 million more dollars to reach their fundraising goal. read more

Comprehensive tour of the US Mint - the one featured on the Discovery Channel's "Underground Cities" or whatever that show was.....pretty cool to see where the country's supplies of gold & silver were stored, the vaults, the coins that had made impressions into the walls due to the volume of shtuff that was crammed in those vaults. Our guide wasn't the best (his assistant was more knowledgeable) but he was very passionate about the Mint & coin collecting so couldn't fault him too much....plus, they're volunteers so we know they're in it for the love. Interesting to learn how the bldg was completely made of metal - doorways, window frames, stairways, columns...everything. Also it sits on a sand bed to it'll move w/ any earthquake & stay intact & b/c it's made of metal, it's fireproof & survived the great fires from the 1906 earthquake....too bad the section of the bldg that is crumbling was due to the CIA in the 1970s who took out the columns in the room & ruined the stability. We were told it'll cost $100 MILLION to refurbish this bldg & get it "back up to code" so for now, they can only have 49 people in there at a time & the rooms are mostly gutted & rundown. Such potential for a well-visited historical landmark! read more

Came here for an industry party at a conference. The set up was awesome with drinks and hot, fresh and yummy hors d'oeuvre. We had a gorgeous evening dinner under the patio lights in the courtyard of the Mint and the sponsor hired opera comedy actors to intertwine with us throughout the evening and then serenade us while making us laugh through a 3 course meal. Whoever catered the Verifi party - their staff was impeccable and impressive. I've never been served so quickly, efficiently and by happy staff. Hats off to them! Afterwards the party moved to the basement for a casino night, more drinks and music by a DJ. The place was well lit and fit the Roaring 20's party theme. Awesome event space!!! read more

Attended an Sf Cocktail Week event here over the weekend. Such a wonderful space. Little hidden nooks and original light fixtures throughout the space add to the charm. Exposed wooden beams and bricks add to the old Sf feel. During this event separate stations were set up in the vaults in the basement. So happy I got to experience this local gem. . . . read more

SF Mint is a hidden gem loaded with local history. If you are a history buff, a cool way to spend a Sunday afternoon is at the Mint. They offer tours Sundays from 1:30-3:30. This is also an amazing venue for events. There is a beer tasting event coming up, and they even had an awesome Haunted House here last Oct. The doorman at the event was not pleasant. He didn't let my wife in because her driver license was international and he required a passport. With all the respect to current laws... my wife is on 8th month of pregnancy so there is no way you don't see it. She'd not be drinking there! Came here for SF History Days and really enjoyed our experience. One thing to be aware of is it is not a museum setting with equipment and displays of coins or information about the minting process or history of the building. You can tour the downstairs where there are vaults and one replica of a stamping machine. The history days group did a fantastic job of offering guided tours (it was too tight to really tour the place, so it was more of a presentation in one location). The rooms were also filled with various historical groups with lots of information about events going on around the city. I appreciated being able to view the interior of this building and learn more about the history of this incredible city. read more

It was History Days at the Mint Building. I quickly perused the schedule and decided that it wasn't my thing but Hubby wanted to go. I wanted some of those free 100,000 tulips at Union Square but it was raining and that line was 4 blocks long. Mint it was. In my many trips to SF and now owning a place here, I had never walked down 5th to Mission. Suddenly there it was, this gorgeous old building, constructed in 1875. Getting inside we wandered around this gorgeous old building. The old floors, doors, light fixtures...that was a treat even without the various exhibits. During History Days, there was lots of stuff going on so you are sure to like something. What I liked was going downstairs to the old vaults. This weekend they had old pictures of the city and lengthy interesting historic videos. We spent nearly four hours there and time flew by. Subsequent research tells me that this is a popular spot for parties and weddings. I can see why. It is not a cookie cutter place and sure to be memorable if you choose to have an event here. Me, I am glad that I did not dismiss History Days. I plan to return, this time with a much more positive attitude. Oh and when I left, it was still raining. I poked my nose into the now lineless tulip event which was closing up and was able to pick up several tulip bulbs, albeit without the flowers. I plan to plant the bulbs in my Columbus home and remember this great weekend. read more

Wow, an amazing venue for a great party. Took a tour with Art and was impressed with the possibilities (and the stories behind the marks on the wall, etc). There are many nooks and crannies to discover. The basement vault feels like a wine cave and the rooms upstairs can be used for a nice cocktail hour and reception. The place is steeped in history and will eventually become a museum. Pricing ranges depending on how big your group is and for the type of event (corporate, wedding, nonprofit, etc). read more

The building itself is impressive and definitely worth seeing. The bottom vaults where they held the gold is a must see if you attend an event there. That being said, the last few exhibits I gone to have left much to be desired. Last weekend, my boyfriend and I went to see the sf art that had been on for weeks. After we bellied up our ten bucks a pop, we wondered through the rooms. After seeing some of the "exhibits" of photographs of homeless people and my favorite a guy with his pet rat, I did not need to wonder why we had the whole place to ourselves. Mind you, I have no problem paying $20 to support the arts, and I realize that art is subjective, but that being said I do have an issue paying to see an "exhibit" which is only in a few rooms, when 70% of the mint was empty. The event we went to a few months prior was basically a large career fair for organizations in the area. It was a strangely organized and odd to attend. Especially at a price. I do want the old mint to succeed, and hope that they pick better events to host and more in depth exhibits. At this point I'm going to compare the old mint to the boy that cried wolf. Shame on them for suckering me in for another lackluster exhibit. read more

This venue is fantastic. The vibe is wonderful and rustic. It has so much space for anyone to schedule a truly amazing experience. It may be my go to spot for New Year's moving forward. I am definitely going to check and see what else goes on here the rest of the year. It's a little too bad there's not really much you can see from the minting days. read more

Came here for a new years celebration called New Bohemia. Its a nice place with some really old school architecture. Most of the inside is definitely the same as it's probably been for years but it has a lot of space for partying. There's a nice open courtyard in the middle to get fresh air, a few bathrooms to ease any congestion and even a large basement that served as an extra room to party. The ceilings are high and rooms are all hardwood so you don't get much of that stuffy feeling you get in old buildings. This is a good venue to add variety to your party. read more

Came here for the Holiday Arcade, pretty cool and different something to do on holiday weekend. Loved the vibe, but since it was the Friday after Thanksgiving, there weren't as many people. They were expecting more people on weekends, hopefully that's what happened. This building adds to the collection of historical landmarks around the city. I wish they could create some kind of business or library with it to make use of the building. For now, it is used to host things here are there. read more

I can't wait to change this four star rating to a five. I had the thrill of touring this building yesterday as part of a friend's Historical Society event and I was just blown away. There are plans to renovate the building to be both carbon neutral and LEED Platinum certified and to eventually open it as a museum of San Francisco - but most important, as an event venue for hire!! What a fantastic event space - just as beautiful and momentous as the buildings of our civic center. That said, the project will be immense. The entry hall and center room (pictured with huge chandeliers) are absolutely beautiful as if the main hallway of vaults downstairs. But many of the areas on the first floor and downstairs with the vaults are literally crumbling. So, the city and/or Historical Society will no doubt need to raise millions upon millions of dollars to make their plans come to life. I hope that happens! read more

Someone could describe this place to you in detail, but you'll never realize its full potential as an event space until you actually stand inside it. To me, it felt a little bit like a throwback to colonial times, with detailed architecture, handsome woodwork, spacious connecting rooms and a long open hallway that stretches the length of the building. It also reminded me a bit of the mansion in "Eyes Wide Shut," with room after hidden room of new surprises, and I say that in the best possible way because I happen to really like that movie. The party I attended took advantage of the whole space, offering different food setups, music, beer and wine bars and games that could be discovered as you casually explored. I'm not sure of the costs connected with doing something here, but if you can swing it then it looks well-worth it! read more

What a gorgeous building. I got to check this place out for the Hendrick's Gin event a few weeks ago. Though it was at nice, the building was gorgeous and the courtyard was a nice place to have some drinks under the moon. I'm sure it's pretty expensive to rent out, but would love to rent the venue out for an event. Maybe some day :) Check this place out if you can. read more
