Regardless, I owe this honor to a fellow Elite member who took an interest in my often stream-of-consciousness reviews, much like this one. Of course, I confess that I have never needed anyone's permission to offer my opinion. Opinions are like certain body parts: everybody has one. Although I certainly do not pretend to be a professional food critic, it seems altogether fitting and proper that one of my first reviews after receiving that designation should be about a place that is difficult to categorize and even more difficult to forget. La Cabriole has been quietly operating since 1982, when I was in the seventh grade. Somehow, despite having lived in the Chattanooga area from birth until 1997, I never discovered it. After nearly 25 years away, I returned in 2021 and finally found my way to La Cabriole in 2025. Although the Chattanooga dining scene has evolved considerably over the years, the city has not always been known for its international cuisine. French restaurants, bakeries, and similar ventures have come and gone. The owner at La Cabriole even remembered one and actually knew the manager at Paris Cafe, or some such French name, a place that I thought used to be on Market Street. The latest versions are Calliope Restaurant & Bar and Camila Bistro. Meanwhile, La Cabriole appears to have carried on quietly in the background, sustained by a modest but loyal word-of-mouth following. The restaurant is located on the northwest side of Lookout Mountain, at the end of Browns Ferry Road. When we arrived, we were thankful for the signage, as the place is a modest modular-style building with a deck. If I am being honest (#LaReyna), it is not grand or fashionable in the conventional sense. Inside, however, the restaurant has a warm, relaxed character that feels almost like a time capsule: French military uniforms displayed on mannequins, eclectic artwork on the walls, carefully set tables, and an atmosphere that is equal parts country restaurant, curiosity shop, and private dining room. My wife and I were one of only two couples dining there on the evening of our visit. Nearby, the staff was preparing a long table for a larger gathering the following day. The quiet of the room might initially make someone wonder what, exactly, they have wandered into. I want to believe that this uncertainty is part of the experience. Mrs. Geraldine Chardon, the owner and gracious maîtresse de maison, is the principal point of contact for reservations. She is pleasant, thoughtful, and unassuming. She opened the restaurant with her late husband, who was from France and trained as a chef. She came out to speak with us several times during the evening and remembered our telephone conversation when I made the reservation. The meal consisted of seven thoughtfully prepared courses. Each small plate arrived with care and purpose. Nothing felt hurried. Nothing felt careless. I had the duck confit, and my wife ordered the sea bass, if I remember correctly. As I recall, the soup was butternut squash. The chef also came out to ask how we had enjoyed our dinner. The staff was attentive, friendly, and genuinely invested in the experience they were providing. So, what is the verdict? Was it the single greatest meal I have ever eaten? I truly feel that is not really the point. The food was good, hot, flavorful, and objectively well prepared. Still, La Cabriole is greater than any individual dish. Its appeal lies in the totality of its parts: the unexpected location, the intimate setting, the quirky décor, the warmth of the service, the deliberate pacing of the meal, and the sense that the restaurant endures because, without sounding too sappy, Mrs. Chardon still seems to love what it represents. La Cabriole offers something increasingly rare: an experience with a distinct personality. It is the textbook definition of a curated experience. It feels personal. La Cabriole is openly eccentric, quietly charming, and entirely its own thing. In the end, this may be less of a conventional restaurant review than an overly nostalgic love letter to an unusual moment in time. Paraphrasing William Faulkner's famous line about the South: "Tell me about La Cabriole. What's it like there? What do they do there? Why does it continue to exist at all?" After spending an evening there, I think I finally understand.

The steak was overcooked and tough covered in a salty gravy. The Lobster was literally served almost raw. When I pulled it from the brown shell it was translucent so we stayed away from consuming the lobster. There were 2 other tables stating the same. The bread was not fresh and didn't come with butter. We were not able to finish the main course and elected to pay and leave early. Again, it's not the service that was an issue.

If you don't want to dine in, they offer a drive thru to place an order to go. The service is friendly and patient towards first timers. Inside is clean and tastefully decorated. Service is friendly and fast. No complaints. Great for groups or individuals will visit again.

It was overdone and chewy. Filet mignon should not be chewy at all. I love good food, make lots recommendations, yelp, share on social media, etc BUT and didn't want to write them off just yet. I called them and let them know, they said I had to bring my receipt and the food back to inspect it. They said they could re-do my order. They made it right. They Re-did the order and the meat the 2nd time came out perfectly. It was very tender and just melted in my mouth. I'm glad I called them (which I don't normally do). The staff was great. I drove all the way back for a refund and had to wait 15mins for the manager to come back from a "supply run" to get a refund. The manager came in and was very rude! Never acknowledged me with a "Hey", "How are you doing" or anything. He had an attitude because he had to give me a refund, like the hair in the food was my fault. Also, he never apologized for the problem. The only thing he said during the entire interaction was, "the money will go back on the card"... Not even a "have a good day". The manager was more mad than me when I'm the one who drove all the way home, sat down, opened the container and couldn't even eat because it's hair in my food. Then had to drive all the way back to Hixson, waited 15mins on him to come back from running errands to even get a refund. TIP for Manager: Having your employees wear hairnets, would prevent you from getting mad at the customer about doing a refund because one of YOUR EMPLOYEE'S HAIR fell in THEIR food. (:

The restaurant itself is small, so the seating is limited, but the service is fast enough that customers can come in and out without much of a wait. They also offer ordering for takeout. I'd been here once before, a few years ago, and tried their pho and that was amazing! Unfortunately they no longer serve pho, which has been known as a huge hit amongst residents; they are changing their menu to be fully Korean. However, their other dishes are very good and the prices are reasonable + the portion sizes are pretty big. You won't regret eating here!

To start with the positive, the sushi itself was actually solid for an all-you-can-eat spot. AYCE sushi can sometimes be hit or miss, but the rolls and sashimi here were better quality than I expected. We arrived around 8:30 PM on a Sunday. The restaurant closes at 10 PM and the place was still fairly busy with customers. We were greeted kindly by a host with pink hair and seated near the TV across from the sushi station. Service overall was friendly. Where the experience became frustrating was how early the sushi bar shut down. By around 9 PM, every sushi chef had already broken down their stations. I'm talking fully cleaned cases, wiped counters, and the sushi bar basically closed. There were around five to seven sushi chefs working, so it was surprising to see the entire sushi station shut down while customers were still dining. At the very least it would make sense to keep one or two sushi chefs working closer to closing time, or let customers know something like "last call for sushi is at 8:45." We weren't told anything when we walked in. I've spent about 17 years working in kitchens and culinary, and in most restaurants if something is about to be 86'd or is nearing last call, the staff communicates that clearly to the guests. To be fair, the sushi I did receive was good. What I ordered: Miso soup Two crab salads Avocado salad Snapper sashimi Tuna sashimi Tako sashimi Spicy California roll White Tiger roll Spicy tuna roll Crabmeat roll Cucumber roll And yes, I finished everything. My co-driver was honestly surprised I was going to eat all that, but I don't leave food behind. I even had room for another roll or two. The sashimi and rolls were good quality overall. A few pricing things were a little confusing though. Sashimi costs an extra fifty cents per piece while nigiri does not, even though the only difference is the rice. There is also an eighteen percent charge for wasted food plus fifty cents per uneaten piece. I understand discouraging waste, but the combination of those charges felt a bit excessive. The base AYCE price was around twenty-two to twenty-three dollars, which is fair. However the additional charges can stack up quickly. The miso soup was unfortunately the weakest part of the meal. It tasted extremely watered down, almost like plain broth. My total ended up being around thirty-three dollars after tax, which isn't terrible, but the early sushi bar shutdown and lack of communication made the experience more frustrating than it needed to be. Overall the sushi quality was solid and I'd still come back again. Just give customers a heads up about last call for sushi and this place would easily be a home run.

Nothing pairs with delicate nigiri quite like a television the size of a drive-in movie screen. The all you can eat menu is a little limited when it comes to rolls, which was a bit surprising. But the nigiri selection was actually pretty strong and, more importantly, surprisingly fresh. Plenty of options and the fish held up well over multiple rounds. The cooked items were also plentiful, which helps if someone in your group is not fully committed to the raw fish lifestyle. Overall, I enjoyed the food. The service, however, moved at a pace that felt very... deliberate. Very, very slow. Slow enough that you start wondering if the rice is being strategically deployed to fill you up before your next order arrives. Still, the food was good and the experience enjoyable enough to land at a slightly above average four stars. Tip: come with extra time and patience. Settle in, watch a good sporting event on that enormous TV, and pack away some pretty solid sushi. Four stars. A little off the beaten path, a little slow on the service, but good sushi and possibly the biggest TV you will ever see in a sushi restaurant.
