My home is in Highlands County and the biggest restaurateur in the county owns three wildly diverse restaurants and this is one of them. I've eaten here many times, but this time my meal was exceptional! Arriving- This place is out in the boondocks of Avon Park! Trust your GPS to get you started. Once you are closing in there is excellent signage. Of course, you're parking at the clubhouse and there is a decent lot. Watch out for golf carts! Atmosphere- This is a golf club restaurant that is open to the public. It's a big, bright, airy place with two large rooms and a beautiful bar. As many of the customers are just off the golf course, it's very casual. It has quite a few TVs for catching a game but it's definitely not a sports bar. Customer Service- Our server was a bit of a mix. She was very new, very nice, but lacking in knowledge. With a little time, I think she'll be great. Food- A combo of unique and classic American fare. You've got your burgers, chicken parm and alfredo dishes. There is a selection of flatbreads that are awesome, and a giant pretzel served with warm beer cheese that is incredible to share! I was on a mission. I had seen an 8 oz. skirt steak with chimichurri on the menu. It's not often I see chimichurri and I was drooling. I paired it with some fries and looked forward to an amazing lunch. It was out in good time. For a lunch plate, it was a very nice presentation. The nicely seared steak was coated with chimichurri with some additional served on the sided. The pickled onions were a nice touch. The fries were beautifully cooked. The steak was fantastic and a perfect medium rare. The chimichurri was bursting with flavor and the fries were exceptional! The meal was an easy five stars, but the service was a bit off. Our Bocce team at Tomoka Heights in Lake Placid LOVES to come here once a year to annually celebrate "Everybody's Birthday!" Our hostess, Parker, knew we had a reservation and was happy to see us. She quickly added two extra seats and helped arrange decorations, etc. Our servers, Janelle, Emma, and John were cheerful and very accommodating! The orders were handled beautifully -- the service was top notch, and, the food was delicious! Everyone left satisfied and happy. There were 28 of us with no complaints about anything! I was happily surprised by how good the food and the service were at Sandhill Grill. I was part of a group of 6 people. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. We passed around the appetizers and each one was very good. Truly enjoyed the following : Grouper bites Buffalo shrimp Onion ring tower Fried Green tomatoes Fried pickles and green beans The Cobb salad was huge and really good. The flatbread pizza was very good and I'm told that the burger was good also. The only item that was a little disappointing was the chicken picatta. Not terrible but just ok. I was skeptical of this place driving in because it was in some kind of country club. However it was actually fantastic and open to anyone. Service was great, food was great, prices were reasonable. I had the chicken piccata with pasta which was very good. My girlfriend had the grilled shrimp with the potatoes au gratin which were delicious and we also had cheese curds. Overall great place, especially considering there are not that many places around here. Will definitely return next time we are in the area. read more

So many want to know the good AND THE BAD about a restaurant. So here is the bad; the acoustics are noisy when the place is anywhere near full. BUT THATS IT!! On the positive side, excellent food prep team with many tasty main entrees and side dishes ARE NOT an afterthought here! (Au gratin potatoes are quite tasty & even the green beans are spiced up a bit - try them at least once!) We'd also note portion sizes are where they should be; no corner cutting here! Having been customers since the beginning, we can say the service has been very good although two long time servers, Amanda & Gabrielle, have taken the role of a quality server to an even higher level. Both of these gals put a smile on our faces when they take care of us! Bottom line, when we have out of town guests, and we are going out to eat, the Sandhill Grill is one of our favorite options. Went to this restaurant tonight had chicken picante which was very good tasting. Ordered a peach sangria which didn't have any peach flavor, so I did have to ask for more flavoring. For dessert we had a piece of orange cake. When it was served it was served with two spoons ( we were sharing it) I stated to the waitress that I didn't care to have a spoon to eat the cake that I'd like a fork. She Told me that they didn't have any more forks :( and that they always served the cakes with a spoon. I again said but I'd like a fork. Although the cake was delicious I would have loved a fork. We will be back but next time I will ask if they have a fork before I order a dessert. read more

We took a friend for Mothers Day! We ALL enjoyed the food. Two of us had the one of the specials which was a delightful Chicken Piccata and another had the most tender and perfectly seasoned Pork Ribeye. The setting was very nice surrounded by a golf course and the restaurant tables were spaced out well, it was bright and the waitress was very friendly and attentive. We have always been very happy with our visit to eat there before today. Today did not go well. We ordered a pretzel, onion rings as appetizer. The other items were baked potato, chicken tenders and carrots, ahi tuna, and salad. Before all food ordered was piping hot and fresh when served. Today the food was barely warm. Service was slow and the waitress seemed to be very forgetful. She probably could have used some help. I hope this was just a one time off day. read more

Had a group of 14 gentlemen play on Thursday morning April 20th. After the round. Entered bar as the third group. Had a couple pitchers of beer sitting there for 10 of us when we came in. Doesn't take long for 10 guys. Waitress didn't look our way for more beer. We tried to flag waitress for more beer, did not pay attention to us, one guy yelled we are out of beer ! I went to the bar and paid for more 2 pitchers of beer and told the barmaid I was not happy with our service with our waitress and gave her a nice tip for the beer. Waitress came back to our table and told us she was not happy with us yelling at her we had no beer. Said she would charge us 50% more for our beer basically if we shut up trying to be funny? In the meantime I had a talk with Andy in the Pro Shop with our experience. When I came out with talking with Andy, I had the Bar supervisor staring me down, so I had a little talk with her, told her we were not happy with what happened with our service. She proceeded to tell me we were rude with our waitress and other customers were complaining about us. We are in the BAR, not the sitting area. Not sure about the attitude she had towards me, but it was not friendly. Nice $1000 day for the course from us! Not going to happen again! Friendly staff, my favorite dish is any of the linguine offerings. Wings and burgers are same as any restaurant. Place was clean with tables picked up. Only problem was it was very loud and hard to talk over the noise. But in fairness the bar and restaurant was crowded. read more

Have never been treated so rudely at a restaurant in my life. EVER !! Hadn't even been seated yet and the rudest woman accused my husband of trying to steal the drink menu. He had picked it up at the host stand to look at and she said Hey Buddy do you plan on keeping that. WHAT??? We were blown away. We were very happy with our visit to the Sandhills Grill today. The service was wonderful, the food was tasty and served quickly. Homemade chips with the sandwiches which are the best I've had. We had poutine as an appetizer and it was tasty though made differently then what I am used to in Maine. I would recommend as a new taste if you are used to fries with melted cheese or sauce and gravy. We had four different kinds of sandwiches in our group and everyone was happy with their choice. Our son what're to meet our family here for his 9th birthday, we made a reservation for our group, a few members where running late, after a few minutes the said they would have to take the tables back if they weren't here in a few minutes. The problem with that was the restaurant was about 15% full besides our party. We been here for 45 minutes and nobody even has walked in the door. The lady over seating was extremely rude and unkind. Amazing hidden treasure in Avon Park. The food is a amazing with large portions and spectacular service. The pretzel and beer cheese dip is a must order item. It's presentation and size alone is sure to impress! Everything on the menu is made fresh to order with quality ingredients. The parking lot is deceiving as it always looks packed and fear of no seating. Keep in mind the golfers are parked there too! Ask for Christina if you can; she's an excellent server.
