Went to The Screening Room for the last time, for now. We have been going here for many years to watch old movies on the big sreen in a small comfortable setting. We followed them from their previous location and hope to follow them if they reopen in another location. We wish the owners and staff well into the future. Unfortunately, the mall management did not renew their lease because it is closing to become another empty giant graveyard in the Town of Amherst, NY. The town is notorious for allowing developers destroy small business with no legitimate reason or near future plans other than to create humongous empty buildings. read more

Last week we sadly had our last visit at the Screening Room. They lost their lease with the closing of the Boulevard Mall and will be cloding their door tomorrow. We've been a fan of this venue for years. Remember the Nik Wallenda walk across Niagara Falls in 2012? Well we watched it live on the big screen after the showing of the Marilyn Monroe movie Niagara. The Screening Room hosted the 2025 Yelpies, and it was a lovely venue! To begin with, not only are the usual snacks, but also pretzels and beer and wine. They do monthly poetry readings (slams?); Monty Python quote-a-longs, Rocky Horror showings, film trivia nights, open mic nights, etc. This year they celebrate 30 years in business! Visited the screening room for an event and what a gem this is. People always ask, what can I do in the Buffalo area that is different. Well here it is! This small business with a lot of heart welcomes groups and the public for film viewings (they are currently playing 'Love Actually') Everything from private viewings for your group to regularly ran movies of the owners choice. This place screams nostalgia and quaintness in the warmest of ways. It gives vibes of if I had a the funds to build a home theater and extend it to include a dining room and kitchen. Wow! What a super place to host a private party, with or without a movie. For the first time ever, I went to the Screening Room last week for a private event. Check out the website. The current schedule will show some of the possibilities. Poetry reading. Music. Why not a reading for a play? Or standup comedy? Or A bridal shower or baby shower. Yeah! A baby shower with a showing of Three Men and a Baby. Or Look Who's talking. Well, I don't know what all possibilities exist for using this great venue. And neither will you until you call and ask. Or try it out. Attend any of the scheduled public events. See what you think about possibilities. They have pop, beer, water, and wine, popcorn, soft pretzels, ice cream (dish, float, sundae). I had a sundae when I was there. Large dish of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and whipped cream... $6. Excellent. If you are looking for a neat and different idea for someone's birthday party... this is it. Or maybe for a fundraiser? But do check the schedule. This is a shaby chick little cinima. It's a bit odd how the seats are set up and you can't really sit in the chairs too long, but the image and sound quality of the movie was great! The Café Casablanca is the best coffee I'd ever had and the screening room is the only place you can get it lol

This is a really awesome venue to watch a movie. Tonight was my second time coming here. I came here with my mom to see Rear Window, which is a classic James Stewart film. Grace Kelly also stars in it. The movie is only $7, $6 if you're a senior citizen. You can buy popcorn after you purchase your ticket. (My bucket of popcorn was only $4.50!!!) You can also buy beer or wine by the glass, or wine by the bottle. The prices are reasonable. They have extra butter and other things to put on the popcorn. My mom and I were going to sit towards the back but we ended up moving to the front row. The chairs were really comfortable. They have tables in some of the spots too. There was relaxing jazz music playing before the lights were dimmed and the movie started. It's worth it to come here, just for the ambiance alone. I'm hoping to come back here soon. read more

I've been here a few times now, most recently for their Princess Bride screening and trivia night, previously for a play that my friend was in. I really love the space here, it's got cool vibes. But, it is not cut out to hold the number of people that showed up for the princess bride night. We were packed in like sardines! But I can't knock them for it, because the staff is so great and it's such a cool space. They showed the movie first, followed by trivia. They even did a little skit acting during trivia which was a nice touch. Things I love: -all the mismatched chairs in the screening room. It makes you feel like you're in a giant living room filled with friends. -their snack menu has ice cream floats! Like an old fashioned soda shop. -movies themed decor everywhere! Nice venue. I saw a speaker there and it was a comfortable space to listen to a talk. There are different seats to choose from like theater style, couches and regular kitchen type at tables. The room is spacious so you aren't sitting on top of one another. The entrance is welcoming with movie posters and other movie related paraphernalia on display. The bathrooms are a bit run down but clean. Parking is plentiful and located near the entrance. For the talk we also had a potluck and there was a separate room where the food could be set up on long tables for a buffet. It worked out really well. read more

What a gem! Prior to going here for a yelp event, I've never even heard of the place. Now I've been here twice since that event. It's a cheap, fun, interesting, different date idea. My husband loves classical movies but I have seen almost none of them. When he sees that The Screening Room is playing one of his favorites, we will now take the drive from the southtowns to attend. This place serves beer, hot chocolate, wine, mimosas, LOGANBERRY FLOATS, etc. It's got a big comfy couch in the front row, tables and chairs in the center, and recliners in the back. It's such a different experience than going to Regal or Dipson. I hope they will consider offering some more recent movies soon. We will be back! read more

Do you ever get resentful that we don't have as many cool spots to watch movies as some of our neighboring cities (cough Rochester or Toronto?). Sure, we have locally-owned Dipson Theaters, but they don't even serve wine or beer, let alone have tables and comfy chairs for you to sit at. And while going to the Dipson Theaters surely beats catching a flick at Regal, it's tough to be crazy about it when you've experienced such fantastic movie watching experiences in neighboring cities. Well guess what? I am now brimming with pride for Buffalo's movie theaters once again. Ever since The North Park closed down (and I can't wait to see what they do with it once it reopens), I've just been a bit bummed. Is it so much to ask to enjoy a nice movie in a laid-back comfortable environment? Well this little Cafe, which by the way is probably run by your grandparents (please be sure to thank them and make sure you take over this business when they don't want to do it anymore, because it is SUCH a gem!) delivers! Tucked and hidden away in a plaza in Amherst, you wouldn't know this place exists. What does it promise? Old flicks for true movie lovers, low prices and the feeling that you're going to watch a movie in a friends house. My fiancé and I went there this past Saturday night to catch Breakfast at Tiffany's. It cost $5 to watch the movie. A bucket of popcorn cost $4. Tea with unlimited refills was like $1 each. We didn't get any beer or wine, but plenty of people were enjoying libations at little tables set up around the room. Our total bill for two for one of the nicest dates we've had seeing a movie was like $14. Cost-value aside, there's a community feeling here that is priceless. You need to experience it for yourself. Check their web site for movies that are playing and come snuggle with your SO or bring your friends and enjoy a fine night. If you're coming on a weekend, be sure to get here at least 10-15minutes early if you want to find a seat at a table or come even earlier. I've been working with Bob on having a private party here. I wanted to rent the room for a holiday party since they had a great deal. Unfortunately, we have to reschedule due to Covid restrictions, but I have to say...Bob has been really wonderful to work with. He's really responsive, flexible and understanding. I haven't even met him in person. It's all been through email! This place is such a gem. Located in the boulevard mall is a one screen theater with couches and tables. You can gets floats, popcorn, and alcohol. They show classics and favorites. They also have special showings of smaller films. I have not yet been to an event besides a movie (or trivia or comedy,) but I plan to. It truly is a unique date spot to try. read more

Tucked away in a small plaza is one of Buffalo's best hidden treasures. I'm always on the lookout for interesting movie theaters wherever I go, and this one definitely fits the bill. Who knew the Screening Room was hidden away like that? I didn't, and that's why stumbling upon it was one of the best discoveries I've made in a long time. We decided to check out the Screening Room on a lark one night when we couldn't figure out what to do. The theater shows older movies and independent films, so at the very least, we'd see something interesting. The film that night was How to Steal a Million, an Audrey Hepburn film neither of us had seen before. We decided to check it out after grabbing dinner at Falafel Bar nearby. (pro tip: this combo is great for date night!) When we got to the theater, we were amazed at what was hidden away in that plaza. I highly recommend getting there well before the show starts, for several reasons. First of all, the place can get packed. On our most recent trip, the theater was so full that we ended up on a bench underneath the projector. It wasn't a bad seat, but it was all that was left. Granted, it was a Hitchcock movie that night, and it's going to be a bigger crowd than usual. The second reason to go early is to take time to look at all the posters. The walls are plastered with images from past showings, classic movie posters, black and white head shots, you name it. I could wander around and just stare at the pictures all afternoon before the movie starts. Finally, shows do sell out sometimes, so get in right away to get your ticket, find a comfortable seat, and save some time to get popcorn. I have yet to sample the treats, but all of them have been calling out to me. I'm so glad we found the Screening Room, it's truly a gem. It's important to support local, interesting theaters, and we'll definitely be back! read more

The Screening Room is a wonderful little theater. It's staffed by friendly people and shows quality movies, often locally made. Not only that, it's also comfortable! I have a muscle disorder that makes it hard for me to sit through a movie, but the last time I was here I was able to do so with little pain. I definitely thought I'd have to bring my own chair and called ahead of time to make sure this was okay with management. The gentleman on the phone was polite and told me that was fine. Since this is a place with an intimate atmosphere I thought that was considerate of him to let me bring in a big, hulking chair. However, I didn't need it! The chairs they have in there are comfortable if you're able to get one of the comfy ones. The food is also pretty good and not your average theater fare. I got a glass of wine because it's not often in public that you can watch The Princess Bride with a Riesling in your hand. I love this place and I look forward to whatever they decide to screen for Halloween. It's always a great choice! read more

Went to the Screening Room tonight as I was lucky enough to win a package from Yelp. I chose Casablanca as it's timeless. The package included 2 tickets, 2 drinks, popcorn and 2 chocolate sundaes. As we checked in, I was told that the drinks and ice cream was only for the Friday showing. I must have looked disappointed as he then said, oh, that's ok, you can still have it. That's the type of great customer service this place has! Thanks! These people have been running this place for a long time. Our drink options included anything and they have a great selection of both alcohol and soft drinks. I had a Labatts black cherry seltzer while Jan had a hard cider. Our sundaes were a nice bonus. The place was crowded and naturally the movie did not disappoint. It's a great alternative to a standard movie house. Varied seating with tables and assorted couches and chairs. They offer unique trivia nights, poetry slams, and themed evenings as well as live music. You can even rent the place. Hats off to these folks for offering such a diverse and interesting experience. read more

I've been wanting to check out the Screening Room for a while, and finally did with the showing of Halloween (78). It worked out great, because this was the opening night for the 2018 Halloween film, so we saw both back to back. This is a very relaxing and classy place, very cozy. I loved that even a jazz band can play and entertain us. This is a place where you can drink, even get ice cream while watching the movie. And to be honest, the only reason why this is a five star review is because I wish they had more food options. Imagine if you had steak and watching a hard edge action movie. I guess that's a different type of theater but I'm just saying. I will return again! read more

I am so pleased with The Screening Room. I recently held a private event there for a friend. The owner was so kind and helpful during the planning and the day of. I haven't had the pleasure of checking out one of their screenings there yet-would love to check out a trivia night, but if you are looking for a unique place to hold a private event, you should consider the screening room. This isn't the run of the mill bar room. We have use of the entire facility, there were plenty of comfy places to sit down an watch a movie of your choosing or slideshow. The venue rental was quite reasonable. You can bring in outside food, and they have their own bar with some great drinks (at reasonable prices!) And they have champagne y'all! Any event can be a celebration with a little champagne! Can't wait to get back and I thank the folks at the Screening Room for a great evening! read more

Even the MAGA group that tripped over me while going to get more buckets of Mich Ultra couldn't ruin Screening Room for me: paying $7 (!) to watch 80s cult classic Clue with $4 (!!) buckets of popcorn and $4.50 (!!!) bottles of local and regional craft brew made me wonder how they keep the lights on but grateful that they do. Imagine a dining room filled with nine kinds of furniture (e.g. bar stools, tables and chairs, etc.) set up more like a dinner party or restaurant than a movie theater and you'll get the idea. They are also the nicest people ever and play classic films without the 15 minutes of trailers that you sit through in corporate theaters. Space is limited and the concession lines can get long, so plan to arrive early. With the recently opened (and glorious) Naan-Tastic basically across the strip mall from it, TSR looks to be the start or finish of many date nights in Amherst for us. It's a keeper. If I have one complaint, the lack of the traditional movie theater downslope or elevated seating in the back means that taller patrons towards the front may obstruct one's view of the screen (see: get there early). It's like a four-plus. Pro tip: tables can be reserved for groups. read more

Enjoyed watching the movie "Casablanca" this evening at the Screening Room. It's one of those classic movies I've never seen, but I probably would only watch on the big screen, so this was a great opportunity. I love that it is a family-owned business that has been around for many, many years. They sell very reasonably priced snacks, beer, wine, hot chocolate, coffee, tea... all sorts of things. They have a wide variety of different seating options, old new movie theater seats, chairs and tables, seating close in the front. All seating seems to have a good view of the screen. The only thing I wish is that there was better surround sound. Though I do enjoy that it wasn't too loud. Very nice owners. Definitely great place to check out. read more

The first time I came here was for a Yelp Elite event and really liked it, so when they had an Oscar party the next weekend I decided to come back. Had just as great of an experience the second time as I did the first. The setup for the place is really cool, you can grab a table and enjoy some food and drinks while you watch a movie. I'm giving the Screening Room and Bob (owner) 5-stars, for a really cool experience, great customer service, and just overall being a great place to go to. My best friend's son recently graduated from high school, and as she was looking for a place to host the party, I suggested she check out the SR. Bob was incredibly helpful and allowed her to block off two dates, until she could figure out which one worked out better for everyone. Because you know that once summer begins, everyone's got a graduation party every Saturday and Sunday! The price to rent out the place for 4 hours was a steal! She brought her own catered food, plates, utensils, decorations. The contract included soda and coffee, and she set it up where people could get beer and wine on a tab, which she'd pay for at the end of the event. Bob made sure that he had one staff member on hand so that the place was set up with tables ready for the buffet and for friends and family to sit at. My friend made a slideshow, and her brother made up a playlist, and we were able to watch a the SS of pictures on the big screen, and listen to music. I will definitely be recommending people use the SR for more functions and to attend and support. This is such a great place, and I fear that people don't really know about it, because it's located in the hub bub of the Boulevard Mall. It's not IN the mall, but next to Macy's. For those familiar with the mall from back in the day, the SR is now where they once had the Chinese buffet. I hope you'll check it out! read more

Outside the cafe, An older gentlemen is writing the title of the ONE movie they are showing, while listening to his grandson chat with him. He opens the door to the entryway hall and invites me politely inside. I am there early - and wander looking at the walls of pictures of private events that look (appropriately) a bit outdated, but fun and unique. When I walk in, jazz music is playing in a room cluttered with tables and chairs and some fun looking red pleather(?) couches. There is a concession stand stocked with - besides the usual movie theater fair - wine, beer, hot chocolate, and coffee as well as some specialty drinks, which I can't really comment on since I stuck to a bottle of water this time. I love that it's available though, it just adds to the uniqueness of the Screening Room experience. Basically, at this point - I know whatever happens next I have fully romanticized this place and fallen in love The cluttered room does not serve to be a problem for my friend who happens to use a wheelchair - the staff quickly asks us for our table preference and moves a couple of chairs out of the way. When the movie starts the cafe is silent other then a few snacks being munched and movie reactions. The crowd here is, like the movie selection, made for true film lovers. We are all there to really SEE this movie. The movies they show at this theater are classics (they are doing a Hitchcock series now) and new movies you will most likely not see anywhere else. I was in heaven! The only downside to the Screening room, for me - is the location. Arriving at Northtown plaza on a Tuesday night, looking for a rather non-descript building amongst closed retail super centers was a bit tough. I wish they were in a location easier to reach for an urban-dweller. However, it is definitely worth the trek at least once in awhile for a great movie experience... I just hope the suburbanites around the area appreciate having this theater in their neighborhood as much as I would! read more

THIS PLACE! THIS PLACE!!! This has to be one of the best places in the Buffalo area, hands down. I have seen three movies here over the years and I absolutely loved it. This place is a cafe cinema (meaning you get to sit at tables and order food/drinks while you watch a movie) so it is already unique. The staff is so friendly and the people are really cool. I don't remember the price (you can check their website) but I remember it being pretty cheap for just movie tickets. They show the best old movies like Hitchcock movies or Casablanca (every Valentine's Day). This is definitely a must-go if you like movies at all. A final point: One thing I worried about was that this place would be filled with "movie snobs". You know, those people that go see old movies and then say things like "ohh yes that in fact was a 1936 AeroStar sea plane not a 1938 Windmark sea plane as the movie makes it out to be, yuck yuck yuck..." and then stares at you for not knowing this simple fact. But, in fact, the place is filled with friendly regular people who just want to enjoy a movie. I like that. A lot. read more

I went to the Screening Room for their Sci-Fi movie night, and I was wildly impressed (enough that I went back the following evening for a regular screening). The price is definitely right. For a double feature of Gattaca and The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original) it cost just $10... $8 for me since I found out about it through Meetup. When I came the following evening for Murder on the Orient Express the tickets were just $5 each. A tub of popcorn is $3.75, a far cry from the Regal or AMC where a large popcorn is running somewhere in the neighborhood of $10. Other reviewers were right that it's hard to find. I think it's particularly tricky because when I read "Northtown Plaza" I assumed it was part of the shopping plaza, but there is a separate business plaza off to the side. The Screening Room is probably accessed most easily by turning into the parking lot on Bailey. The decor is cute. There is a row of comfy-looking chairs in the front with tables and standard chairs lined up behind it. The walls are decorated with old movie posters and lights, and there is a concession stand tucked in the back corner. I've been back a few times, and each time I'm a little more impressed. read more

One of my favorite things about Buffalo is all the little hidden gems waiting to be discovered. The Screening Room is a prime example. Tucked away in a nondescript plaza, this cinema is the perfect setting for a cozy, comfy viewing of a classic film. The "cafe" feel is awesome. Order wine (nothing fancy) for $18/bottle and about $4/glass or a beer ($3 for domestic, $4 for premium). The popcorn is really inexpensive as well. The setting is absolutely adorable and comfortable. The walls are covered with movie posters yet feels the opposite of cluttered. There are tables throughout the room with chairs and there are a couple couches for more comfortable seating. Staff is really friendly and obviously excited that you've decided to check them out. Their film selection is great and they keep their online calendar up to date. I caught an Alfred Hitchcock film, "Rope," which I had never seen before. This place is the perfect setting for classic films. I can't wait to go back and tell all my friends about this place. Where have you been hiding all my life? This cinematic experience in the form of a coffee house is truly one of the most enjoyable times I've ever had. I stumbled across this place while reading ArtVoice's movie section. The Screening Room was showing How to Marry a Millionaire with Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall for $5 admission. I adore Marilyn Monroe and have always wanted to experience one of her films on the big screen. At first I thought it would just be a small theater, but after looking through some of their pictures it was set up like a cafe which I was skeptical about which I'll get into later. The Screening Room specializes in classic and foreign films. They show two different films every night and some nights they'll allow you to stay for both at the cost of one. Their admission changes based on the type of films they're showing which is understandable. The only criticism I have about allowing patrons to stay for both films in one night is to at least have some cohesiveness between the films. Somebody who wants to go see a Marilyn Monroe film may not want to stay and watch an Alfred Hitchcock film. The Screening Room also allows you to host private events there which is pretty neat if you want to have a birthday party screening. Screen your favorite film and have a mini party. Now for my personal experience. Like I mentioned above, I was a tad skeptical about the whole cafe feel. Wouldn't it be crowded? How would we be able to see the screen? I was a little nervous. When I arrived my worries instantly vanished. The decor was all classic Hollywood. The walls were littered with classic film posters, movie lights, film reels, it fit the mood perfectly. The tables and chairs were spaced out very well that if all the chairs were filled, people in the front row could sneak by without squeezing through. In terms of the screen, it was a good size. The screen was raised above, like a drive-in, so there were no worries about people's heads getting in the way. As I sat there watching Marilyn Monroe grace the screen, it was like looking up into the stars. Watching these beautiful ladies shine bright again on the big screen, there were no words to describe the amazement! Moving onto their menu! I took one look at the menu and was quite shocked at the assortment they offer. You can order an entire bottle of wine for your table, pour yourself a glass, sit back, relax, and enjoy the film. What other place allows you to do such an awesome thing like that?! Aside from that they offer beer, your choice of soda, water, tea, and a drink I instantly fell in love with over the name itself. Café Casablanca, a warm apple cider served with a cinnamon stick. Any classic film fan will instantly understand the reference and I personally fangirled out! (Fangirl - A fan, sometimes also called aficionado or supporter, is a person with a liking and enthusiasm for something.) Finally, the location. When I said, "Where have you been hiding all my life?" I meant literally. It took me two days to actually find out where this place was located. It's located in the Northtown Plaza on the corner of Sheridan Rd & Bailey Ave. At first you'd think it would easy to find, nope! I drove around the entire plaza a handful of times just to finally find it located in the furthest corner, behind another building, and next to some dumpsters. There was a small sign on the wall next to the door saying "The Screening Room" which initially led to my skepticism. A couple signs and arrows would help wonders in finding this place. I don't know if they're deliberately trying to hide this place, but if that's their intensions they're doing a pretty good job at it! Once you find out where it is, everything else is smooth sailing. Here's the "too long, didn't read" version. If you're a fan of classics/foreign films, this place is for you. The menu provides a variety of items. The cost of admission is quite reasonable, but depends on what you see. If you've never been here before, do your research first and leave a little bit early to find it. The Screening Room represents one of those hidden little gems in Buffalo that you'll completely fall in love with. I can't say enough good things about this place!
