Since my last review, I've enjoyed dining at the Sea Biscuit Cafe and getting takeout from Pepe's Pizza many times. It's wonderful to have a nice restaurant near Holden Beach that's open year round. The service remains quite good, with friendly and helpful staff doing their best to ensure you have a fabulous meal. I recently joined five other women for a Sunday brunch where four of our table ordered the special French toast, which was a huge hit. I opted for the shrimp and grits, which is a hearty, filling bowl of deliciousness, topped with perfectly cooked local, sweet shrimp. And it's gluten free. Chef's kiss! If you're in the area, please check out the Sea Biscuit Cafe and spread the word about this Brunswick County gem.

UPDATE: We made another visit to The Sea Biscuit Cafe again this year on our recent trip to Holden Beach. I still enjoyed my visit but it was not a perfect five star visit this time as it was the first time. They appeared to be very crowded (almost full parking lot) and we could tell the stress level when we came in. Still, our server was nice and helpful but we could see that they had a busy time of it then. We did have a considerable wait after ordering but when the food came, I still enjoyed mine just like last visit. This time I went with something simple/basic in The Boomer menu selection that included 2 eggs, bacon, grits, and toast. The scrambled eggs were again just as I like them and I really enjoyed the rye toast as well. Others got The Hen With A Grin (chicken and waffle) and Breakfast Poutine bowl with a pancake on the side. Of note, the chicken was commented on as pretty good but the waffle did not match expectations by the person that ordered this one at our table. I do like these guys for a good sit down diner breakfast but they appeared to be a bit overwhelmed on the day we saw them this year.

Love the Sea Biscuit Cafe. Service is great by servers. Sometimes they are a little overwhelmed BUT that's why you get connect 4 to play while the cooks make your meal fresh! I love when they have their chorizo bowl special! Their cheddar burger with homemade fries or chips is amazing! My husband enjoys the fried bologna add an egg! Just a quiet nice place to go if you enjoy a good cooked meal. I love their breakfast and their home fries. The only thing I wish is that they had homemade chips for dinner service.

The food was very good! The service was running behind which they did warn us it would be a 15 minute delay before our order could be processed. The restaurant was clean but the price for breakfast was a little more expensive than we would like to pay. It was near $70 for a family of 3.

nice little mom& pop place. we went for bread and were very pleased! 1 waitress & she was hopping & friendly! breakfast & lunch only - they close at 2:30!! closed tuesday & wednesday! it's pepe's pizza 4-9 evenings! i ordered the seersucker - $10 with the pimento cheese on the side. hubby ordered the basic instinct - $9. portions are great & prices are fair.

Called this avocado toast. It is not. I literally had to spit some of it out. I never rate restaurants as poor but holy cow this was awful.

Inedible. Like really really disappointed. The avocado toast was not avocado toast. The avocados were brown, the biscuit was hard. The pico had tomato stems. Just gross.

The food was really good. Everything seemed fresh to order and tasty. The portion was perfect. We both left there full but not over stuffed. Service was on top. She was very attentive and came over often or looked over and gave thumbs up to make sure we didn't need anything. The ambiance was average, but clean and organized. Nothing fancy, but nicely decorated. We had a great first impression and would recommend it for others to try if they are in the area.

Terrible service and mediocre food. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Hardee's is better.

I don't know many restaurants that would happily take a call saying, "Our night just went sideways and we have 19 people to feed." Honestly, I probably would have been a little annoyed myself. But from the moment we arrived at Mermaids Island Grill, we were met with nothing but kindness and hospitality. The young ladies taking our order were friendly and welcoming, the bartenders kept the drinks flowing, and the servers delivered piping hot food with smiles on their faces. Every single person in our group loved their meal. With 19 people ordering from all over the menu--calamari, fried pickles, crab legs, grouper, fried shrimp, hushpuppies, and more--that's no small feat. What stood out most wasn't just the food (which was excellent), but the service. We were never rushed, despite arriving so close to closing, and the staff continued chatting and smiling with us as we left. Mermaids Island Grill completely turned our evening around. 10/10 for both the food and the hospitality. We'll definitely be back.

The atmosphere is still great, which is apparently where all the effort now goes, because the food has clearly been left unsupervised. We placed a to-go order because we had our dog with us and were sitting downstairs. Simple enough, right? Not exactly. We spent the next hour and a half playing a fun little game called "Where Is Our Food?" Downstairs told us to check upstairs. Upstairs told us to check downstairs. Very efficient system if the goal is confusion and hunger. When the food finally arrived, we had seafood chowder, onion rings, a hot dog, and hamburgers. The seafood chowder was still good, so congratulations to the chowder for surviving whatever has happened here. The onion rings were cold, the hot dog bun had a green mold spot on it -- always a nice surprise -- and the hamburger was honestly impressive in the worst possible way. I've had better burgers from fast-food chains that at least admit they're serving frozen patties. This used to be a staple. Now it feels like one of those places that got popular enough to stop trying. I won't be back for the food. Maybe drinks, because thankfully no one had to cook those.
