We've eaten here for years and always enjoyed the experience but our last two visits have been just plain bad. We decided to give them another chance today and it was the worst yet. Needless to say, we won't be back! We arrived at 1pm, we'll before their 2pm closing time but our entire meal was rushed and we were treated as though we had arrived at closing time! My dad ordered a salad he always gets and it was totally different. Didn't have the listed ingredients or same dressing. It was obvious they made the wrong salad or were out of the ingredients. It had no green peppers, onions, olives or pepperoncinis. When we told the waitress she noted that it was incorrect and casually uttered, "sorry!" The crackers we were served were rancid and stale. The smell was awful. The server tasted them and agreed they were awful but had no other crackers available, only dried pita, which isn't the same. We had to ask for drink refills numerous times and it was obvious it was resentfully served. We left the restaurant at 1:40 and there were still 4 other tables seated. We watched them turning people away from 1:20 on. While we were eating they were stacking chairs all around us. It was very obvious that they didn't care about taking care of customers, only getting out of there as soon as possible. Don't have high expectations if you eat here. Been a LONG time since I ate here. Decided since there WAS a parking spot nearby we'd eat brunch here. Had the Popeye with spinach, broccoli, onion and Swiss cheese. Opted for home fries since I figured that if those and hash browns, I would get the best choice. WRONG - Little cubes of potatoes - no onions or flavor. The hash browns were actually GOOD. The 3 stars are for the lack of service. We were there when the restaurant was half empty just after 12 noon. Trying to find our waitress was futile, so we flagged down the nearest staff member. Had to ask for cream for the coffee - grudgingly placed on the table as she scurried to sit with some friends in another booth. Someone else brought the dishes and left before asking if we needed anything else. Took a full THREE minutes to find someone to bring some butter for our now cooling English muffins. read more

First (and likely last) visit. Should have walked out when we watched a staff member wipe up a table for us, yet manage the leave crumbs. Asked him to clean it up, and grudgingly did another wipe. As we waited for our order, another couple sent back runny, cold scrambled eggs, and we overhead a waitress telling another customer their order got messed up. We ordered breakfast food, and my partner was served an English muffin which appeared to have been pried apart by hand, thrown on a grill for 10 seconds or so - which means it was served up untoasted. We asked for it to be replaced, but the wheat toast never made it to our table. Staff didn't appear to give a damn - from the table "cleaning", to the toast, to checking out - when we were asked how our meal was at checkout, explained are issues with the meal, and they rung us up for the whole check, and proved a rather unenthusiastic expression of regret. read more

So this was our first time here, despite being snowbirds in Siesta for a long time. What a great find! My companion was thrilled to see Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast on the special and I ordered a quinoa/black bean skillet. Jordan was our server and he was solicitous, helpful and very speedy. The meals were delicious and we wished we had room for what looked to be great pastries on the special boards as well. The restaurant had a good ambiance - nice tables and booths, and sufficient room for folks to walk through the restaurant without feeling like you were disturbing other guests. We also benefited from the Free Coffee for Checking in, and I did appreciate that Jordan asked us if we had heard about the Serving Spoon on yelp. We arrived on a Sunday morning at 8:30 and it was pretty empty - by 9:00 am the place was jumping. They also have a large well layed out bar, and I liked that it had a step to put your feet on so your feet wouldn't be dangling while eating. A great find for us! read more

The menu has the usual and not so usual options. Gluten free pancakes, quinoa power bowl, omelets as well as burritos. They also have bakery items such as scones, muffins and breads. Service was quick, efficient and everything you want in a breakfast place. They also have a lunch menu. My veggie omelet came out perfect and hash browns crispy good. What a disappointment. I'm visiting the area on business and decided to try The Serving Spoon based upon their positive reviews. Also, because it seems to be one of the only places nearby to offer a Breakfast Burrito. That should read Breakfast "Burrito". What I received contained broccoli and zucchini. Ok, I'm open minded but seriously? Broccoli? Anyway. No beans. Meat was extra. To top it all off, it was folded more like a crepe than anything. See the photo. Burritos are designed to be picked up. They should be wrapped up. They should contain a certain amount of traditional Mexican ingredients. This whole thing was perplexing at best. My "burrito" was served with a side order of home fries, which were flavorless and greasy. They seemed to have been sitting for quite some time and I was there around 9:30am. Now for the positives! The waitress was wonderful. Exceedingly polite, accommodating (including a table change) and attentive. I used a check-in reward via Yelp! for a free coffee, which she had not known existed but happily obliged without "having to check". The restaurant was clean, maintained and moderately busy. I've been hearing a lot of "rave" reviews about the place, and so finally today I decided to stop by for lunch. To be fair, most of these positive reviews seem to be about breakfast, and written by locals who love Craig and Natasha. I totally get liking a hometown ma and pa place, and I also really wanted to love the Serving Spoon. The waitstaff was friendly, efficient, and fast, as was the food. The 2 stars comes from just how bland and unexciting the food was given the price. I ordered the chili, which came out so lukewarm, really cold, that the cheese wasn't melting. It was served with thinly sliced toasted bagel, which gave them the consistency of crackers, and this was fine, but the dish was chili, which was actually chilly. The chili was served simultaneously with a philly steak wrap, which was prepared competently, but without much flavor. The au jus served with the wrap was distinctly American, in that it was thick like a gravy, which I also happen to not be a fan of. The home fries thankfully were not prepared with onions or excessive oil, but again were just so standard I can't really give them a thumbs up either. Perhaps my expectations were just too high given all the 5 star reviews of the place, and I deeply regret having to give 2 stars considering what lovely people they seem to be. Nevertheless, my baseline test is whether or not I would go back, and given the price I paid I am unwilling to give the Serving Spoon a second chance at breakfast. read more

Pretty good, but could have had a little more flavor overall. Also had hash browns, which were ok, could have been on the skillet a little longer. Warning: tap water in Sarasota tastes like chlorine. YUCK! Bottled water only here. And at this place they have plant-based water bottles - love it! Waitress seemed a little scatterbrained, got the BF's order wrong, but she was really nice otherwise. I'll start with: the people were nice and the service was good. Everything else: tired, dated and uninspired. Here's the breakdown: The decor / atmosphere: as warm as a hospital cafeteria. Old tiled floors, dated booths, framed and crooked kids art on the white walls, blond wood chairs and bar seats. 1982 called and wants their furniture back! The food: as good as an airport lounge. Hollandaise sauce looked grayish and a day old, English muffins looked and tasted stale, canned jalapeños, cheese was clustered and smothered on the eggs. Nothing about any of the food showed any hint of pride or inspiration. Overall (other than the people) simply terrible. This place needs a serious overhaul, but is likely in business simply because it's the only place around. read more
